A River Runs Through It

Episode 19 How should I tell you I love you?

Xia Xiaoju.

Who's the one

you used to like?

Why...

Why're you asking me abruptly?

You still like him?

The past

is past.

We

have to move forward.

Right?

Don't mention it again.

OK. You got it.

Here. Catch it.

It's alright. Go on.

Watch me.

All right. Go ahead.

Like this.

See? I'm better than you.

Look, how's it?

Not bad, right?

Speakers, drums.

Who prepared them?

The university did me a favor

and bought those stuff for us.

I'm impressed.

This

is the place where

our dream started.

Let's do it.

It's your salary this month.

Sir, are you sure?

You've advanced me before.

Oh, my bad memory!

I mistook it.

It's for Lu Shiyi.

I was wrong.

For Lu Shiyi?

I'm so talkative.

Lu Shiyi

told me many times

not to tell you.

I still told you.

What's it?

Why're you so mysterious?

You want to know?

Yes.

One day,

Lu Shiyi came to me

and gave me 300 yuan.

Sir, I've got 300 yuan.

Could you

give Xia Xiaoju

as her salary this month?

She really

needs it.

Plus it's not easy for a girl

like her to work here.

What do you mean?

Tell me the truth.

You like her, right?

Just take it.

OK. I'll help you.

Look, remember to

give it back to me

on the payday this month.

Or she'll know this.

That's not a bad thing.

You seem like a good guy.

Why not

I tell her this thing

on purpose?

If Xia Xiaoju knows

you've done

so many things for her secretly,

maybe she'll be so moved

that she'll be with you.

She won't.

Don't you ever tell her.

I don't want to

give her any pressure.

No problem.

You scared me.

Why did you come here?

I was going to see you.

What?

My last month's board expenses

had 300 over.

Dowdy.

Thank you.

Since when

did you become grateful?

It's not like you.

When...

When was I

ungrateful?

That's it.

This fierce look

suits you better.

The atmosphere

is ruined by you.

I was wondering

how to thank you.

Shall I keep the lucky money

of this New Year

to buy you a whole set of

Louis Cha novels?

If you really want to thank me,

be on call all the time.

How about that?

You want me to be your servant

instead of buying you novels?

Aren't you

too calculating?

What's up?

Do we have to

get the math so straight?

In that case,

aunt always let you

bring me good dishes.

How to calculate that?

Fine. Come to my home

with me this weekend.

I'll tell my mom to make you good dishes.

OK?

Great.

OK. Help me with it.

I want to rearrange...

- ... the stuff up there. - All right.

- This one? - Yes.

Shiyi.

Jeez.

You're bleeding severely.

I'm fine.

How did you get hurt?

What shall I do, Shiyi?

Are you alright?

Shiyi?

Does it hurt, Shiyi?

Wait for me.

I'll go get some band aids.

Wait here.

Shiyi. Shiyi!

Outpatient

Keep the wound from water.

Change the dress every other day.

Sir,

he blacked out

for no reason.

Does he need

other exams?

Blacked out?

Does he have low blood sugar?

I've no idea.

There're many reasons

for sudden faint.

I suggest you

to have a complete examination

to find the reason.

All right.

What examination does he need?

I'm not made of porcelain.

You're so careful,

the others will think

I have some terminal disease.

Knock on wood, come on.

All right. Knock on wood.

What are you talking about?

How could you curse yourself?

I just think

you're over-reacting.

I don't need to

have the blood test.

Let's go back. Come on.

Come back.

Listen up,

take the test, so we'll be relieved.

I'm not saying I won't take it.

Can I take it alone?

- No. - You'll go back first.

- No. - I won't run away.

- Lu Shiyi? - Let's go.

Xia Xiaoju?

Shen, why're you here?

I'm an intern of psychology department.

What happened to your arm?

It's nothing.

It was scratched by a hook.

He blacked out just now.

The doctor

told him to take an examination.

It's not a big deal.

She makes a fuss about it.

It might be serious or not.

You have to know its reason.

See?

Shen said that, too.

Yes, you're right.

Satisfied?

Look,

since we've met Shen,

let her accompany me

to have the test.

You

need to go back to the store.

Or your boss

will fire you,

then you'll have no job to do.

Shen has work to do.

Xiaoju, just go back.

I'm free today.

I'll go with him.

Relax.

How can I run away

since Shen's here?

I promise I'll take the test.

Just go.

Really?

Really. Go.

Well,

I'm leaving.

Thank you.

No problem.

Hold on.

Put this one.

It's cold outside.

Forget it.

- I'm leaving. - OK.

Bye.

Be careful on your way back.

I see. Bye.

You seem to

care about Xia Xiaoju so much.

You're afraid she'll lose the job,

you're not afraid of bothering me?

Didn't you just say

you were free?

Never mind.

I can go to

take the test myself.

Just do your business

if you're busy.

I was kidding.

I'm always free

as long as it's your matter.

Come on, let's go.

I promised Xia Xiaoju

to take care of you.

If you don't want me

to do it,

I can have Xia Xiaoju back.

I don't think she has

gone too far.

Slow down.

Shiyi.

Shiyi.

Shiyi, are you OK?

Shiyi. Shiyi?

Shiyi, what's wrong?

Shiyi.

What's wrong with him?

Why did you buy a guitar again?

Didn't you have one?

The band doesn't have

too much money.

We chipped in for this one.

Huang, be careful with the money.

Or you'll have nothing left.

I know that.

The guitar's awesome.

The strings are soft.

It's good for a girl.

Why did you buy it

for a layman like me?

I didn't buy it for you.

It's for Xu Menglu.

So,

does it look good?

Yes.

Doesn't she have one?

That's a wooden one.

We're a rock band.

Besides,

she's our face.

Her appearance matters.

Xu Menglu, here's the guitar.

Huang Jun.

You like it?

You did buy

a pink guitar.

Of course.

I, Huang Jun,

am a man of my word.

Come on, try it.

I've just tuned it.

I love you so much.

So, do you like it?

Don't mistake me.

I didn't mean that kind of love.

Come on.

Play our song... that...

It's distorting. Sweep it.

Huang Jun, I've got classes.

I shall go now.

Even if I don't lie to myself,

I don't care how complicated the world is

and how regretful it'll be,

I'll embrace the glowing dream,

try hard and ignore the bystanders.

I'm still so cool when I fall.

All right, guys.

So much for today's class.

What's up?

You don't feel well?

No.

Huang Jun made you mad?

He bought Xu Menglu

a guitar,

a pink one.

They were

discussing music there,

making me feel

like an outsider.

Especially that Xu Menglu,

she said she loved him

so much right in front of me.

You mean

that lead singer

has a crush on him?

Are you thinking too much?

Impossible.

Female's instinct never mistake.

I'm sure she's suspicious.

What about Huang Jun?

How does he

think about her?

I've no idea.

I'm so confused now.

Look,

go to talk

with Huang Jun.

Make him understand

he's a person with a girlfriend.

He should keep

a proper distance from other girls.

Take it easy.

I'll talk with him.

You?

How's it going with Cheng Lang?

What else can it be?

To: Cheng Lang From: Mango Pudding

We To: Cheng Lang From: Mango Pudding

To: Cheng Lang From: Mango Pudding

just keep being pen friends. To: Cheng Lang From: Mango Pudding

To: Cheng Lang From: Mango Pudding

No matter how he's moved,

he doesn't know it's you

if you keep hiding.

I just hope he can be happy.

You won.

You should

fight for love.

Don't you know that?

By the way,

I need to check on Dowdy.

Could you take my bag

back to the dorm?

Later.

Hey, wait.

Where're you going?

What's wrong with Shiyi?

Nothing.

I'll tell you when I'm back.

I shall go now. Bye.

What was the result of

the exam this morning?

Are you alright?

You're really fine?

I mean it. Look at me.

I'm as strong as a bull.

It's not a big deal.

It doesn't hurt now.

The time you blasted

my butt with firecrackers hurt more.

Did the doctor tell you

why you...

Ouch! Easy.

I'll be gentle.

Did the doctor tell you

why you fainted when your arm was scratched?

He...

He said I had low blood sugar.

You didn't have breakfast again?

I didn't bother to buy it.

Didn't bother?

Don't you know

how important

the breakfast is to a human?

To think you're

going to be a doctor.

You always let me worry about you.

These are breads and biscuits

I bought for you.

You just

put them

in the dorm.

Eat them when you

don't want to buy breakfast.

Tell me when you eat them up.

The boss will give me

a discount since I work there.

What's up?

Feeling dizzy again?

Don't move. I'm just feeling tired.

Let me hug you for a while.

Just a while.

Have you been too tired?

Take my advice.

Don't go to

the store to help me recently.

You have many classes

as well as the training of basketball,

that's too much for you.

Did you hear me?

Yeah.

All right. Our Dowdy

has been too tired.

Let big sister hug you.

There, there.

Still sleeping?

Handle the relationship correctly.

Don't be too stubborn as a kid

to deceive.

We need to solve...

Huang, time for breakfast.

Just put it there.

Where're we?

I know you want to say something.

Your arm's scarlet.

Hiding behind the wall.

You're sharper than

the people in paintings.

Don't count on the time.

I'm short of something

in your eyes.

I want to be the cloud

which awaits vanishing.

You're lying here

and waiting to crush everything.

That's it! Just adjust it like that!

Fantastic.

I'm pretty sure

our band will be popular with you.

You're the soul of the band.

You know how to highlight

my advantage.

No. You're so modest.

Huang Jun.

Breakfast.

All right.

So be it.

Adjust it like we did just now.

Awesome.

Thanks, Tao.

It's good.

Enjoy the breakfast.

I shall go now.

Join us.

Maybe I shouldn't.

It's fine. Come on.

Sit.

Hurry.

Then I'll have some.

Just help yourself.

Here.

- It's used already. - It's fine.

Huang.

Did you forget you promised me

to have breakfast together?

I haven't eaten yet.

But I just bought two for us,

not for another one.

Eat mine.

Let's share one.

Come on.

Take it.

Go buy it yourself.

Letao.

Watch your words later.

Don't make her mad again.

Cheng Lang. Huang Jun.

Over here.

Here.

Make it clear after a fight.

The silent treatment won't help.

I won't talk to him.

Tao.

Why didn't you tell me

before you came here?

Who are you, sir?

I get it.

I was wrong to make you mad

at breakfast.

But you can't pretend not to

know me.

Your words

hurt me so much.

You're the soul of the band.

Save your sweet words

for your lead singer.

I need to go back to sleep.

Tao.

Tao.

Go.

I'll make the situation

even worse if I follow her now.

You should sit.

Don't blame me

for having not warned you.

This time

Tao's really mad.

It's not easy for you

to make her happy.

Why did you fool around

with another girl

when you had a girlfriend?

Have you no idea of loyalty?

How could you say that?

Keep your voice down.

What do you mean "fool around"?

You mean I'm a playboy?

There's nothing between me and Xu Menglu.

Tao's too jealous.

Stop writing. Say something reasonable.

Anyway, I know

Letao isn't a girl

unreasonable.

Did you hear that?

You need to know how lucky you are.

You'll get no place to cry

if Tao's so mad

that she breaks up with you.

Listen up,

don't push me.

Tao loves me so much

that she won't do that.

What's this?

- Shiyi, here. - Shiyi.

Lu Shiyi, sit here.

- Shen Duo? - Senior Shen?

Take them

back to study.

I'm sure they'll

be helpful to you.

Thank you, Shen.

Down to business.

Shall you tell

your family and friends about your situation?

I never had blood phobia before.

Why do I have it now?

Blood phobia

is actually

a mental disease.

It's a kind of phobia.

But

if you keep hiding this

and then something happens,

I mean if,

I don't know

how to explain it to them.

I'll find a chance

to tell them later

when we're not busy.

Look, the hospital I'm practicing in

has an expert on this disease.

But he's doing

an academic exchange abroad.

I'll introduce you to him

when he comes back.

What matters to you

is to be relaxed.

Remember it.

Nervousness

won't be helpful.

So, down to business.

Let me tell you something serious.

I'll sit there to tell you.

OK.

What's going on between them?

When did Shiyi

become so close

to Shen Duo?

Shen Duo has had a crush on him

too long.

We all know that.

But does Lu Shiyi

like her, too?

What?

You mean Dowdy

likes Shen Duo?

I didn't say that.

My point is,

will they date there

if they don't like each other?

No way.

That's it.

I'll believe it if you tell me Dowdy

likes Cheng Lang.

He likes Shen Duo?

Why did you get me involved?

Don't say it definitively.

Didn't you say

you never saw Lu Shiyi

was with

another girl alone, right?

What's more,

Shen Duo

is their department belle.

Shiyi knows beauty

even if he's a fool.

I heard when he went to

the hospital last time,

Shen Duo

took care of him gently

all the way.

Really?

I think they're

almost settled.

Almost settled?

I see.

Boys' Dorm

Why are you

so stealthy?

Do me a favor if you're my bro.

What is it?

I quarreled with Letao

and I couldn't amuse her.

Just do me a favor.

You've made your girl mad,

is that my concern?

You...

This is the way you treat your bro?

To think I thought for you

even when I

had a fight with my girl.

What do you mean?

I tested Xia Xiaoju for you

when I was in the library,

I said

you might

like Shen more.

What did you say?

I imitated your handwriting

to write to Cheng Lang

and asked him out at 6 pm on Friday.

So you changed my letter

when you helped me to send it?

No.

I... I didn't read it.

How could you do that?

Her face changed at once.

I'm sure she was jealous.

She can't realize your merit

when you're around her.

She'll only be nervous

when you

show her how many girls

are around you.

That's playing hard-to-get.

I don't know playing hard-to-get?

Listen, Huang Jun,

I'll tear your silly mouth up sooner or later,

see if you still can talk funny.

You can't get her

in more years

in this way.

Shut up.

Don't push me to beat you.

Come on.

What the hell is this?

So bloody.

I told you

I wouldn't tell Cheng Lang

I was Mango Pudding.

You'll

make us feel awkward

when we meet.

But you have to

move forward

to let him know

you like him.

I just wanted to help you.

You shouldn't have done it in that way.

I need to take the letter back.

I'm sure he has received it.

Xiaoju, don't be so mad.

I just wanted to help you.

You'd just get me killed.

No, Xiaoju.

Xiaoju,

I'm here to see you.

- No. - Come.

- I have an urgency. - I've got business

with you.

Xiaoju, wait.

Why did you

disturb them?

Go away. I don't want to see you.

I'll leave if you don't tell me.

I'm in a hurry.

It's not something special.

Then why did you

drag me here?

I'm really in a hurry.

Well,

back in the library,

Shen Duo wanted to tell me something,

so I didn't

sit with you guys.

Are you mad?

You really mistook us.

I just formed a band

with Xu Menglu.

It's just a normal social contact.

- Normal social contact? - Yeah.

You sent her a guitar.

You practiced with her alone

and made sheep eyes at her.

You call those normal things?

What else do you want to do?

To hug her and kiss her?

All right. I see.

I'm not mad.

I'm not.

I'm really in a hurry.

I need to go.

Hey, what's your business?

Let me help you.

You're so unreasonable.

I'm unreasonable?

Fine.

Don't bother to

be with an unreasonable person.

- Leave. - You.

I can't explain

this matter to you.

Anyway, it's an urgency.

Just mind your business.

Huang, what happened?

Huang, what's wrong?

What happened?

What happened?

Could you forgive me, Tao?

What's wrong with him, Tao?

Huang, are you alright?

Tao.

What's going on?

Why's he spitting blood?

Huang.

Are you alright, Huang?

Shiyi. Shiyi?

What's wrong, Shiyi?

How could he be alright?

Doctor, he just passed out.

And it wasn't the first time

he passed out

for no reason.

Could you exam him

carefully, all right?

The exam result shows

he's totally all right.

Doctor, could you

exam him carefully again?

He's awake.

Shiyi's awake.

What was wrong with you?

- Why did you spit blood suddenly? - Shiyi.

Shiyi, are you alright?

- How're you now? - Why did he spit blood?

He pretended it.

He wanted to get Tao's sympathy.

Childish.

I'm alright.

Are you alright?

Kid, your friend said

it wasn't your first time to pass out.

We don't have sufficient equipment.

I suggest you

to take an exam

in a large hospital.

I'm fine. Thank you.

I've got business to do.

Take care of him.

Thank you, doctor.

Good bye, doctor.

Let's go.

Back to the dorm.

What?

No. Why do you go back?

He told you to go to a large hospital.

Come on.

Why should I go there since I'm fine?

Are you taking

your health seriously or not?

Why won't you go there?

Are you keeping something from me?

No.

I major in the medicine.

How could I not know

my own health, right?

I'll be mad

if you don't tell me.

Fine.

I'll call your dad

and let him ask you.

No. I'll tell you.

Come on.

What is it?

I...

I have blood phobia.

Blood phobia?

I didn't have it before.

I don't know why

I have it suddenly.

We major in the medicine.

How could you

be a doctor if you have it?

Watch your mouth.

Isn't it just blood phobia?

Shiyi, don't worry.

Let's treat it. OK?

That's right. We will

be with you.

Yeah, we'll be with you.

I'm with you.

Jiangzhou University

Psychotechnics

Xiaoju?

Cheng Lang?

Why're you here?

You know it, too?

I didn't know

how to help Shiyi

and I couldn't sit still.

So I came here to

seek information.

I didn't expect

we thought in the same way.

Then let's discuss it together.

We can solve it faster

if we work together.

OK.

Let's go there.

Let me copy it.

You need a break.

OK.

What's up?

I'm thinking

what if Dowdy

can't be cured

and fails to be

a surgeon?

Being a surgeon

is his dream.

I'm sure he won't give up.

What we need to do

is doing our best to help him.

Cheng Lang.

It's good to have a friend like you.

Why did you say that suddenly?

Because no matter who of us

got in trouble,

you'd always be the one

who chilled and found a way.

So we feel so relieved

to have you with us.

We're best friends.

That is what I should do.

Cheng Lang.

No matter

what happens,

you're always

my best friend.

I'm sure of that.

Boys' Dorm

Hello.

Lu Shiyi.

What do you want?

To cure you.

Tao likes this, too.

We want Braised Eggplant.

And this one.

And this.

- I know. - This.

- Fried Bacon with Bamboo Shoots. - Yes.

- And this one? - Yes.

I love it, too.

Let's order some vegetable.

- OK. - Scrambled Eggs with Tomatoes.

OK. Shiyi likes this.

And this.

- That's all. - Thank you.

Thank you.

What?

Stay away from me.

Your clothes are so ugly.

I... Look,

I wear them because Shiyi's sick.

Have some soda.

- Thanks. - Here.

I won't.

They're all here.

Don't embarrass me.

Will you come to see

my rehearsal tomorrow?

No.

Fine.

Wen and Wei

asked for leave.

I have to

rehearse with

Xu Menglu

without being disturbed.

Xiaoju, will it work

in dressing like this?

Can you cure him?

Yes. The book told me

contacting frequently was

the most direct way to cure phobia.

Right?

But he needs to see real blood.

You...

Even Tao thinks they're ugly,

they must be hideous.

Real blood?

Turn around, hurry.

Still want to be a doctor?

Watch it.

Guess who I am.

Hi there.

What's up?

We haven't played the piano

together so long.

Could you play it with me?

Don't scold me

if I play it wrong.

What is it?

My tutor

recommended me to study in Eurpoe.

You

agreed?

When will you leave?

When my visa's issued.

You applied for it?

Why didn't you tell me?

I've been supporting you

to pursue your dream.

I knew you'd

go abroad to study one day.

But how could you...

how could you

not tell me beforehand?

I'm your girlfriend.

Shouldn't you discuss it with me?
