searching for a man

who shot a transgender woman.

That shooting coming
inside a Mobil gas station

at 7 Mile & Greenfield
last night about 8 o'clock.

- [Newscaster 2] Security video
capturing quite a struggle

between the two before the
woman was shot.

- [Newscaster 3] The murder

of an African-American
transgender woman from Pahokee

has created a lot of concerns

in South Florida's
transgender community.

- [Reporter 1] The
mother of Bee Love Slater

didn't wanna go on camera
and friends fear retribution,

but advocates are not
afraid to speak out

telling me they're fueled
by the under-reported level

of violence in the
transgender community.

- [Interviewee 1] It's
mind-boggling, brutal.

- [Reporter 1] That's
the response

from trans community
activists describing the death

of 23-year-old Bee Love
Slater of Pahokee.

On September 4th, Hendry
County Sheriff's deputies

found Slater's body in a
burned vehicle.

- [Reporter 2] She became
a victim of mob violence

and video proof of people
urging that violence on.

- [Interviewee 2] This
time it was me,

the next time it could be
someone else close to you.

- [Reporter 2] Muhlaysia Booker

received nationwide
attention in April

after her recorded
attack by a group of men.

Booker, a transgender
woman, faced that attack

after a car accident
and argument

escalated outside a
Dallas apartment complex.

Tonight, Dallas police
say officers responded

to this isolated East Dallas
street on Saturday morning

on reports of gunshots.

- [Officer] It was after
the medical examiner

was able to positively
identify our victim

and we were informed
that the victim

was in fact Muhlaysia Booker.

- [Newscaster 4] A
community grieving tonight

as a transgender woman is
shot and killed

and her killer is still
on the loose.

- [Reporter 3] It was a
really emotional night here

for the victim's family,
the transgender community.

They believe that not enough
is being done by police

to try to track down
this killer.

They say they are
calling for the DOJ

to step in and to look
at this case.

They also point out that
this is really important

that this particular group,

African-American
transgender women,

are facing a lot of violence
and it needs to come to an end.

(music playing)

A candle lit for a life
taken in an act of violence.

- [Interviewee 3] You killed
a beautiful, loving person.

- [Reporter 3] A mother
mourning the loss of her child.

Police say Kandis Capri,
a transgender woman,

was shot in the parking
lot of an apartment complex

last week, and still, no one
has been held accountable.

- [Interviewee 3]
Justice for my child.

I want justice for the
transgender community.

- [Reporter 3] The family
is calling on the county

and the feds to open up
an investigation,

believing this to be
a hate crime.

- [Interviewee 4] We wanna
get the community to know

that our lives matter, that
we are not just disposable.

- [Reporter 3] The
transgender community

holding up their own candles
as they fear who could be next.

- 19 transgender women
have been murdered

so far in 2019 alone.

That number could have been 20,

had the victim,
26-year-old Salisha Jewell

had not lived to tell her story

what started right here
at this 24-hour laundromat

located on Dane Street in
Pearson County.

The victim claims she
was approached by a man

who later that night
attempted to kill her.

- I was putting a load
of clothes in the dryer

and out of nowhere, this
guy just came up to me.

- The victim admits that
she found the attacker

to be very charming and sweet,

which is why she
offered to help him

when she noticed his car
wouldn't

start in the parking lot.

- He end up telling me he
ran out of gas

and I knew there was
a gas station

not too far up the street.

- It was at this gas
station right here

where the victim planned
to take her attacker.

However, they never made it.

Upon entering the
victim's vehicle,

the attacker put a
handgun to her head

and demanded that she drive
to an undisclosed location.

- All I could think about

is don't do or say
anything to get me shot.

Just do what he says.

- Approximately three miles
up the road near Madison Park

is where the attacker forced
the victim to pull over.

It was at that moment that the
victim made the bold decision

to escape and run for her life.

- I keep pepper spray
in my car door.

I managed to grab it as
I was driving.

- The victim stated that
the pepper spray,

similar to this one, was
given to her by a friend.

She stated she was
reluctant to take it

thinking she would never be
placed in a position to use it.

However, the victim
tearfully stated,

she's grateful she had it
because it saved her life.

The victim's vehicle was
located in a nearby wooded area.

The attacker's vehicle that
was allegedly out of gas

has not yet been located.

of October 22nd,

authorities identified the
victim of a deadly shooting

as 26-year-old Egypt LaRose,

was found fatally shot
behind the Richards building

on Easting street near
Garrison Road.

Authorities describe LaRose
as a transgender woman,

but at this point in the
investigation,

they do not believe that
this is the motivation

behind this shooting, and
subsequently her death

had anything to do with
her gender identity.

and the police still don't
know who killed Egypt.

Which, in fact, she did.

She said that he was very

which means he used all
of that to put her at ease

so that she'd feel

she said he pulled out a
handgun, put it to her head,

and told her, just drive.

that he killed this woman
for taking him to go get gas

for his car, do you?

she escaped.

She pepper sprayed him.

She pulled the car to the
side and made a run for it.
