to stop their approach into
Mississippi, but failed.

commanding officers?

Albert Sidney Johnston and P.T.
Beauregard for the Confederacy,

and Ulysses S. Grant
and Buell for the Union.

What armies were involved?

The Army of Mississippi's 1st
2nd, and 3rd Corps and Reserve,

the Army of Tennessee's 1st
through 6th divisions,

and four divisions of
the Army of Ohio.

That's 63,000 troops
for the Union

and 40,000 for the Confederates,

and the Confederates
still almost won.

Why didn't the Confederates win?

when they had the
Union forces in retreat.

They waited till morning
to do so, but, by then,

Buell had already called
