antiques shop in a new space,

by neighbours Dave and Bird.

I want it to be an ongoing concern.

his eight-week lease on the shop
is set to expire

and Johnny will have to decide:

it means we stand a chance
of staying open full time.

But before he makes a decision,
there's a new test on the horizon.

and then I'll see what's in the van.

the shop is being taken apart.

And the drawers.

It's a big thing.

This is like parting with
all your favourites all at once. I know.

After learning the trade
from behind his own counter,

Johnny's ready to take
a giant leap into the unknown,

selling at a trade fair
for the very first time.

It's a small step for an obese man,
but a massive step for dealers kind.

His destination, the Cheshire
Decorative Home & Salvage Show,

a three-day fair set in
250 acres of English countryside.

I've got to select from the shop what
best represents everything that I want to do.

It's a big task.
I'm nervous about it. I won't lie.

For the first time,
Johnny's not buying,

he's actually selling there.
So that's gonna be an experience.

It's a lot of work for one day, man.
So we have got to sell.

With thousands of potential
customers expected through the gates,

the fair is Johnny's chance

to test himself
against the best in the business...

What 'm going up against
is dealer after dealer after dealer after dealer.

...and prove he's got
what it takes to compete.

It's a far bigger mix of dealers
and folk who are just out to buy.

Will they think I'm an interloper,
or am I a dealer?

Because my every intention
is to be a dealer, a serious dealer.

So, with the shop quiet
on a searing-hot day in Cheshire,

Johnny's taken a moment to call on the man who's
seen it all before, fellow Dagfields dealer, Jon.

So, there on Saturday.

First fair. Yeah.
I'm really nervous.

I was gonna say...
Just as I'm getting comfy in the shop,

I decide to go and do a fair.

You've got all those other traders
right next to you, in front of you, behind you.

They're the competition now.
They're all coming up going,

"yeah."
(LAUGHS) Yeah.

The Vintage Vegas stand will have to stand
out from up to 200 other dealers at the fair.

So, have you been thinking
about what you're gonna take?

I want to take items that I'm
a little bit proud of buying.

Exactly. Because then you're
stamping that Vegas brand.

You're literally
setting your stall out this time. Yeah. Yeah.

Boom, this is who I am.

People are really gonna
judge what you've got.

Well, if I weren't nervous before,
I am now.

(LAUGHS)

Like this 1970s railing
from a fairground ride,

its design inspired
by the hit musical Godspell.

Stuff like that is great fun.

Priced at �300, it's yet to find
a buyer in the shop.

BEV: Take your ducks.
JON: Oh, absolutely. Take the decoy ducks.

Duck decoys were historically used
to help hunters

lure real ducks into range,

but have now become
collectible art pieces.

I'd like to sell one. Yeah.

But maybe not all of Johnny's items
have the same chance of resurrection at the fair.

I wouldn't go huge on the taxidermy.

I wonder if Chantelle will sell.

(GRUMBLES)

(IMITATES GRUMBLING)

Stuff started moving

a bit of sound advice.

they often created the effect

While the origins of this example

it's proved too much

might be about to hit the road,

but Johnny's out to prove
that he's here to stay.

It's another scorching summer's day
in the northwest of England...

We're in an air-conditioned van
and it's too hot.

I can't stand it no more already.

are back on the road.

of their best stock on board,

they are headed 30 miles north

to the Cheshire Decorative
& Salvage Show,

a much loved event, returning
after a five-year hiatus...

We're off to the fair.

...where, for the first time ever,

Vintage Vegas will be setting up
a stall of their own.

Do you think we've
brought enough stuff?

I think we've brought far more
than I thought we would bring

for a day sale.
We've basically dismantled the shop.

The show takes place
at the Cheshire Showground,

set amongst 250 acres
of rolling countryside

belonging to the Crown Estate.

Yeah, and they all know
what they're doing. We are still newcomers.

Now two years into
his antiques journey,

going head to head
with 200 other traders

is the ultimate test for Johnny's
ambition to become a full-time dealer.

We've just got to be able
to prove ourselves.

First time in my life
I can prove I know what I'm doing.

Although the fair doesn't open
to the public until tomorrow,

Johnny and Bev are playing catch-up.

Other traders have arrived early

and are already busy making
deals amongst themselves.

Well, obviously we're way behind.

The next step is deciding on

After a morning of hard graft,

just as Johnny and Bev
are running out of ideas,

the cavalry arrives in the shape
of Johnny's partner, Vikki.

I'm having to make a lot of quick decision
making, which is not usually my thing.

I'm struggling to figure out
what to do and how best to present it all.

Tomorrow, with a fair
full of customers,

standing out from the crowd
will be crucial.

So while Johnny ploughs on,

Bev And Vikki slip away
to size up the competition

and take inspiration for how best
to present their stock.

What do you like about this stuff?

I do like seeing things stacked up
rather than just having them flat on the table.

We've got some crates and we've got
the linen to maybe stack it up.

A lot of these stalls
are packed, aren't they?

And if some items start to go
quickly, it's gonna look quite sparse. Yeah.

I did say to Johnny,
if he wants more items, we've got more to bring.

The stuff that we've got
is completely different.

I don't think anybody's got

Tomorrow, when it opens
to the public,

it's got to stand its ground
amongst everybody else.

We've got to look
like we belong there.

I think yesterday when we were packing
up, it was just so hard for Johnny.

He'd just got the shop set out
how he wanted it,

and to have to pack it all up,
bring it here and set it up,

he found it all a bit overwhelming.
But now he's put it out,

if we can sell a load tomorrow,
that is brilliant. It'll make him really happy.

We've been out to the competitors,
doing our competitors report.

We've been round seeing
what other people are doing.

And he was just using the stools
and maybe the crates and covering them,

giving some height
to your ceramics and things.

Highlight some of the pieces.
Yeah, that's what we thought.

Been a hectic bit of setting up.

Yeah, you know, it's looking... it's looking
okay, innit? It doesn't look too shoddy.

It'll be interesting,
the reaction from dealers.

And it's not long before the traders he's
up against start sizing up the newcomers.

Simon, the guitar-playing
animatronic clown,

could be about to deliver Johnny
his first big sale of the fair.

Seizing the opportunity
to get stock moving before the customers arrive,

and with the sun shining, Johnny,
Bev and Vikki are hitting the road.

They're heading back
to the Cheshire showground,

where today they're selling to the public
at an antiques fair for the first time.

Yesterday was dealing with dealers. Yeah.

Yeah. Today we've got
the general public in.

We want you on top form.

What? No, I'm not saying
you don't know what you're doing.

On occasion,
people have walked up, they've not even said,

"Can you do anything on this?
And you just go...

No, it's just you two
back each other up

and I'm just defenceless
in the corner.

(LAUGHS)

In two years, Johnny
has taken Vintage Vegas

from a pipe dream to a pop-up
and now to a thriving business.

We've got the kist box.
That'd be great to stick some of the ceramics on.

But competing for customers at a fair with
200 other dealers is an entirely new challenge.

It just feels really different because at
the shop, they're coming specifically to the shop.

And now you're up against so many
traders. It's bit nerve-racking.

It is nerve-racking. They're all queuing
up, apparently. So, yeah, almost ready.

I've come from a stand-up
background.

You're only as good as
your last gig,

so prepare yourself for the worst
and then if the best happens...

So, with the stage set,
it's showtime.

And with the crowd streaming
into the sold-out show,

the first thing to turn heads is
one of Johnny's highest-value items.

This leather kangaroo,
priced up at �900.

It's part of a series of
highly-collectible leather animals,

originally sold by
high-end department stores

for displaying magazines at home.

He's 900.
Seven-fifty.

Eight-fifty.
It's the best I can do.

Seven-fifty.

No, 850.

Okay, I've had a try.

If he's still hopping around
at the end of the fair, come and find me.

The huge �750 offer is a sign

that this fair has buyers
willing to part with serious cash.

big-ticket items are attracting interest.

decorative pieces for the home.

There's a lot more kind of traffic.

I mean, I know we get
plenty of people in the shop,

but people are spoilt for choice
here.

So it does feel...
it feels more competitive.

There's so many stalls
with really beautiful, great stuff.

And it's like,
can you compete with that?

It's a lovely little chest, that.
I love that.

But I love the fact
not all the drawers are the same.

They've got... they've got different compartments.
It's very much my thing, isn't it?

The next item Johnny is hoping to engineer
a deal for are these antique wooden drawers.

Cabinets like this once stored tools
and machine parts on factory floors.

Johnny paid
a precision-engineered �93,

and now has it priced at �150.

Are bundle deals available?

Depends how much you bundle it.

We better keep looking, then.

But two years in the trade has given Johnny
the confidence to play the waiting game.

Sometimes you get a lot of browsers,
and we've had a few people in looking

at some large-ticket items,
which is what you're hoping on.

Sometimes you've just got
to stand firm on your prices.

I've noticed his confidence
has gone pfft! And he keeps saying, "Trust me."

So we need to trust each other.
We've got to stop pulling them...

so fingers crossed he sells.

And Johnny's patience
could be about to pay off.

The customer who took a close look
at the engineer's drawers is back.

He wanted his quirky little curio things, but

decorative items like these

at the fair are looking for.

I think he feels
really, really pleased when he's bought something

and somebody sees what he sees
and they walk away with it.

it really means something to him.

Johnny came to the fair
to prove he could go toe to toe

with the best dealers in the game

and the big-ticket item bonanza
shows he can.

But he's leaving with more than
just a good day's takings.

A big lesson learned is

develop a thick skin.

Don't take it personally,
bide your time,

be fair on your prices,
but don't be a soft touch.

I feel like I'm being legitimised
within the dealing world.

I think people know that I'm not
doing this as a presenter's gig,

I'm doing it as a dealer's gig.

It's gonna go on my shed door.

You get back and you've got to reorganise
everything that you put all that work in for.

My beautiful creation.

...successfully selling
at an antiques fair for the very first time.

Bigger ticket item.

Yet for Johnny, the beating heart of
the business remains right here in Dagfields.

Great being back in the shop
because it's our little safe haven.

I'm putting this
on the quality table.

But today isn't just
another day's trading.

It's the final one before the
current lease on the building runs out.

But for a man with a day job,

opening the shop full time
would be a big commitment.

The future for Vintage Vegas
is gonna be very interesting.

I'm trying to weave it
into my other jobs and my career.

Johnny's got to decide if it's finally
time to make the pop-up permanent.

I really missed it,

biscuit makers Facchino's,
