in a haystack. Can I even make it to
base camp?

muscle and just works all the way down

to my foot. It's draining just the same
way it fell.

it hurts the most.

I would suggest a helicopter evacuation.

He's definitely badly damaged his lower
back. He's in a lot of pain now.

I've had a lot of pain in my life.

I don't recognize this pain.

It keeps getting worse, keeps getting

It is just excruciating.

The one thing I feared the most came

major injury upon one of us.

You know, this is going to suck to have
to tell him that the one thing that

could take us out just happened.

I still can't make a fire. It's

when a realization that set in that he's

This experience is an amazing
opportunity.

It's probably the most radical thing
I've ever done.

Right after high school, growing up in
Michigan, all I wanted to do was go to

the mountains, go see wilderness.

And so I went out west.

I worked in Yellowstone National Park.

And then was a wildland firefighter in
Montana.

It's the perfect size.

Finding and living your real passion.
And that's kind of been my philosophy.

It's got some warmth to it.

I've been in predator country most of my

I think if you don't anticipate an
encounter, then you're going to be

surprised by it, and you won't know how
to handle yourself.

I've got to admit I'm not the bravest
person as soon as it gets dark.

I just really want Dave to get here.

My shelter, I don't know if you can see
anything in here.

It's not too bad.

It keeps the rain off pretty well.

I'll wait until my son, Sam, gets to me
before we build a permanent shelter.

Coming out here, I had a two-fold goal.

The most important was to spend time
with my son.

The number two goal was to put my skills
and knowledge to the ultimate test.

I don't think there's a lot of people my
age that would want to do this. For me,

it's just the pinnacle of my outdoor
experience and knowledge.

But I'm really worried about Sam on the
hike.

Moving around out here and covering any
distance, you are much more likely to

encounter a large predator.

I'll be so happy when Sam gets here and
we can go on about our business of

getting into the groove.

Sam and I both have a lot of experience
in the outdoors.

I've been a hunter and fisherman all my
life.

Learned most of my basic skills from my
father, but I picked up a few on my own.

Since I was little, my dad's brought me
outside, and it's what I'm used to. It's

what I enjoy.

I like to understand the forest. I like
to understand the plants and the

relationships between the plants and all
the animals.

It's what I went to school for. I got my
degree in fisheries management.

Sam and I both have adventure in our
blood.

But I've never had any one thing test my
skills the way this challenge will.

I know we'll be arguing about stinky
socks.

It'll be a test, but we'll get through
it.

It's low tide now.

Time to make it out there to the island
and see if I can catch a fish.

I was really depending on fish.

Our decision on who would be the camper
and who would be the hiker was just, I

mean, it was a very easy decision.

At my age, I had no misconceptions about
my abilities to do that.

I have the knowledge, but I don't have
the physical strength and endurance that

I used to have.

I think this is an incredible
opportunity for the two of us.

It could bring us really close together.

I've been following my bearing.

All I can do is trust it's going to get
me there.

The only reason I'm into going in the
outdoors is because my dad stuck me out

here since I was a little kid.

My dad's the strongest guy that anybody
will ever be fortunate enough to meet.

But obviously I'm concerned about him.

I've seen people really hurt themselves
out here in the wilderness.

That would be pressure relief.

I've got another big clearing up ahead.

We'll go ahead and check it out.

Oh, my God.

Just fell in some thick mud.

The ground is so soft, it's almost like
walking in snow.

I've been very fortunate to not really
hurt myself.

I remember Larry said something in
season two that he's just not performing

the way he wanted to, that he'd expected
when he came out here.

And I understand what he means.

You know, I totally get it now. This
forest just tears you up.

It is unforgiving.

I see a big clearing.

I can hear moving water, too. I thought
it was going to be a stream that I could

maybe follow down to the coast.

That stream didn't go to the coast.

Come into this.

Big old pond.

Goes on as far as I can see.

I really don't know what to do now.

God, I just don't know.

And my compass bearing is, you know,
about this direction, but I can't even

see the other side of the pond.

I mean, I guess that's always an option
to take my boots off and just wade

across it, but that's just a whole other
story.

I think at this point I'm just going to
head off over in this direction where I

think I can hear the running water.

I mean, this is the complete opposite
direction I need to be traveling in. But

the problem is, I think that's my best
bet for crossing this pond.

And this is really kind of the last
thing I was hoping to run into.

But my dad's out there. I need to get
across this pond.

This is treacherous.

It makes me really nervous.

Holy, it's cold.

What's the chances of that?

That salmon was basically just swimming
right on the edge of the water.

He just kind of knocked it up on the
shoreline.

And now I got to cook it over the fire.

Tonight, I won't go to sleep hungry.

I've had this cedar bark in my pants
pockets for a couple of days now.

I think it's dry.

I ain't even worried about fire tonight.

This is unbelievable.

Everything's soaking wet.

Not being able to make that fire, that's
just a complete failure.

There's no way that I can let this fish
go to waste. Actually, it's too many

calories. It's just too important.

Now I have to go to option B.

This is what I'm stuck with, is raw
fish.

Friends back home that'd be proud of me
right now.

They know I'm not a big fan on raw fish.

rainy day on Vancouver Island, I think I
might go and try to get a little bit of

firewood.

Fresh bear tracks through the grass this
morning.

All that grass has been laid down.

Hmm. There's some poop from a crab and
clam-eating bear.

Get all that shell in there. It just
chews the whole thing up and swallows

it.

That's a tough bear there.

Got to keep my eyes open.

There are bears all over the place here.

I never know where one might show up.

Lots of deep imprints in there.

Wow. I think there's been a pretty big
bear in here.

That's a little one.

Might be a baby.

Ooh.

Look at that. It's full of berries.

Looks like a bear has been walking
across that log pretty frequently.

You can see how torn up it is right
there.

Looks like a lot of weight was put down
on there.

Maybe 200, 300 pounds, something like
that.

I saw something moving down there.

Caught it out of the corner of my eye.

Today is my oldest daughter's birthday,
Presley, and she's 14 today.

I have never missed a birthday.

I knew coming into this how tight-knit,
My family is, but I also had this desire

to test myself.

Today's task will include setting up a
drying rack for my firewood.

Everything is so damp here. I really
need a next fire mentality where I'm

doing something to prepare my materials
for the next fire.

All right, where's those straight sticks
I need for my drying rack?

My wife and I are really close.

We work together.

We eat lunch together every day.

I'm a really active parent. If I'm not
at the deer camp or in the woods, you

know, we're pretty much together.

The idea of me being away however long
this is going to be is something my wife

and two daughters did not make peace
with.

They just did not want me to come out
here.

I really needed them to say, this is
awesome you're doing this.

once-in-a-lifetime chance. We're so
proud of you. Yay!

But all I got was tears.

I couldn't stand the idea of being away
from me.

Oh, that makes it so much harder.

I've got my poles cut for the drying
rack, and I just need to pick the spot

here.

I've dumped a lot on my wife to do this.

It's a selfish thing to do.

The only way I could justify the amount
of extra work my wife has to go through

in my absence managing our family and
our businesses would be to bring home

the prize money.

It would be great to pay the house off
and pay the kids' tuitions and, you

know, things like that.

So there we go.

I've spent the first few days really
just struggling against the mental

banter.

It'll be easier once Brody gets here.

what my kids are doing at home.

They're totally supportive of Brooke and
I.

My sister's living at my house right now
for the time being, watching the kids

while we're out here.

If that wasn't the situation, I would
never, ever be here.

This is my campsite for tonight.

This is the most open place I've seen in
four days.

Another long day of uncertainty.

So hard to travel when you don't know
where you're going.

The first day wasn't so bad.

The second day it was a little harder.

By the third day, like this, it kind of
sucks.

Not that it sucks being out here. It's
beautiful out here.

It sucks not knowing where you're going
to.

I'm ready for a decent fire.

I want to be alone together.

It makes me happy thinking about it.

I've been around bears a bit, and it is
a scary situation.

Somebody tells you that they're not
scared. They're just, they're either

lying or they don't know what they're
talking about.

But you have to be top of the food chain
predator also and think like that so

you're not scared all the time and that
you do feel like you're protecting your

little corner of the world.

This whole area smells like smoke now.

As far as animals, you know, that's
always a good thing.

It's just breaking daylight.

And I've got a river to cross.

Got low tide right now.

Any minute, tide could be coming back
in.

I'll be stuck here if I don't get caught
right now.
