Lots of fellows sitting
at the club one day...

...and a fellow
told me a story I never forgot.

Medical man, he was. By the name of Tate.
One of his cases.

Woman tried to hang herself...

...and this Dr. Tate got to her
just in the nick of time to revive her...

...after the husband found her
and cut her down.

Anyway, she pulled through.

Young husband was devoted to her.

Cried like a baby when she came round.

The next thing this doctor hears,
she's tried it again.

And this time she succeeds.

Now, now, wait.
I know what you're going to say.

Suicide victims are apt
to repeat the attempt.

Well, that's not the unusual aspect
of this case.

Dr. Tate happened to be
consulting with a colleague...

...who told a very similar tale.

Woman stuck her head in the oven...

...her husband revived her...

...only to lose her
in another suicide attempt some time later.

But now here's the interesting part.

When this colleague went round
to see his patient...

...he spotted a rare hibiscus plant
near the front door.

Got out his camera to take a snap.

Just as he did,
the woman's husband came out.

The snapshot was a bit out of focus...

...but immediately Dr. Tate looked at it...

...he recognized the man in the picture...

...as being the young husband
of the hanging affair.

Oh, dear. The same man with two
different wives committing suicide?

Seems a proper matter for police inquiry.

But it was never followed up,
as far as the doctor could tell.

I expect the fellow covered up
his tracks too well.

Queer story, though, wasn't it?

Wouldn't think
things like that could happen.

A murderer isn't always clever.

I've heard that if a man
finds a formula that works...

Might be worth a mention in the book
if I can find a way to work it in.
