Masayuki has been getting weaker since he moved to Mt. Kudo.

He collapsed in the garden one day.

He was in critical condition once.

PENAL COLONY, MT. KUDO, KII

He recovered further until he was able to see the map of Osaka Castle in bed. A little closer.

Yes.

CASTLE KEEP -Good.

I'm glad that the lord got better.

But...

Father will go away without having a chance to make his name again.

Sir Kato Kiyomasa and Sir Asano Sakyo-dayu have been trying to make Lord Hideyori go to Kyoto.

Yes.

Then...

East and west make peace.

More flowers over there! Come!

Ieyasu has developed unwavering power.

The Toyotomi clan will eventually be taken into the Tokugawa clan.

They will be a mere daimyo.

I, too...

...will be buried here like this.

That night...

HIGO MANSION, FUSHIMI Asano Yoshinaga visited Kato Kiyomasa

At his clan's mansion in Fushimi.

"I had served the late Taiko since my childhood."

"Even after the Taiko's death, I still consider myself as a faithful servant for the Toyotomi clan."

"But I am not even allowed to see you, Lord Hideyori."

"Osaka Castle seems to have gotten so far away."

"That makes me sad."

"I am getting older."

"I am hoping that I can see you while I am alive."

"Please allow me to see you. I beg you."

"I beg you."

This man whose other name is Nagai Yojun... NAGAI HYAKUSUKE

He is a ninja sent by the Asano clan to Osaka Castle.

"To: Lord Toyotomi Hideyori"

This is a letter from Lord Kato Kazue.

You're not allowed to make a mistake.

I know.

INNER PALACE KITCHEN, OSAKA CASTLE

TOYOTOMI HIDEYORI

Please don't scream.

I am a messenger from Lord Kato Kazue and Sir Asano Sakyo-dayu.

Please read this letter now.

This is neat!

Thank you.

How do you call it?

"Bando," my lord.

His Excellency is here!

Shuri.

Is he here?

What is the matter?

-Shuri. -Yes.

Call Lord Kazue and Sakyo-dayu to this castle.

What are you saying out of the blue?

If you want Lord Kazue to do something, why donft you just order him by letter?

You needn't call him over.

Well.

I haven't seen them for a while. I just want to see their faces.

I haven't seen the late Taiko's vassals for a long time.

To honor my father's memory, I want them to tell me more about my father.

No, you can't.

Those who owe the late Taiko... They don't even come to Osaka now.

You don't have to see such fellows.

Mother!

In addition...

Lord Kazue and Sakyo-dayu seem to be watching out for the Kanto now.

Who is the head of the Toyotomi clan now?

I am the head only by name.

I cannot do anything?

Shuri.

I already ordered you.

Yes, sire.

Several days later...

Kato Kiyomasa and Asano Yoshinaga were called over by Hideyori to Osaka Castle.

Lord Kazue, how is your castle, compared with this castle?

Excuse me.

It is no match for your Osaka Castle, but...

Even if we are sieged by a grand army, we have enough provisions for three years.

Also, we have 120 wells in the castle to maintain the water supply.

What's this?

The castle keep has two towers linked together?

If enemy rolls into the castle and captures the keep,

You lose your castle.

Even if one of the keeps is taken, my castle can still stand.

The keep itself is a small castle.

I want to see your castle!

Please come and see it.

When you come,

PRINCESS SEN please take your wife with you.

I know nothing about the world.

Oh, no.

I want to see and hear about different things, and learn more things.

Yes!

Lord Kazue.

-Sakyo-dayu. -Yes.

Come and see me anytime.

Understood?

Yes, sire!

You two...

Enjoy it.

Lord of Kazue.

Sir Sakyo-dayu.

Tell me more fun stories again.

Yes, my lady.

Lord Hideyori.

I would like to pour sake for you.

-No, that's... -Shuri.

I'll have it.

Well, then...

Excuse us.

Please concede to the Kanto, no matter what happens.

Preventing another battle is most important.

I gratefully accept your kindness.

Thank you...!

YAMANAKA MANSION, KOGA

Let me repeat my last words.

Yes.

Don't take the Sanada ninja lightly.

Even if there is only one of them, he will surely try to kill the Senior Shogun.

Yes.

Yosuke.

Thanks for a long time.

Yes...

That night, the chief of Tokugawa ninja, Lord Yamanaka Yamato Toshifusa, died.

Lord of Yamato...

KAKEGAWA, TOTOUMI

Up on a mountain in Kakegawa, Totoumi Province...

Because leyasu will pass this place to go to Kyoto,

Both Koga and Sanada ninja have been working secretly here.

What is the matter?

Yes...

Oko.

We don't fail again.

Sir Yagobei.

Please don't attack leyasu.

What?

I can't do it.

What's wrong with you, Oko?

We cannot attack leyasu now.

What?

Tell me why!

Oko!

Sir Saemon-no-suke told me not to.

He said, "Kill leyasu only on the battlefield."

Oko...!

Why did you tell him!?

"My earnest desire is to make my mark on the battlefield as a Sanada warrior."

"Ieyasu's head is not what I want," he said.

Why did you tell Sir Saemon-no-suke!

We agreed not to tell anyone, including the people on Mt. Kudo!

I am very sorry.

I knew Sir Saemon-no-suke would say so.

That's why we agreed not to tell him.

Now I know what he thinks, but...

If I didn't hear his words, I could pretend ignorance.

If I didn't know, I could focus on my job.

After I found out what Sir Saemon-no-suke thinks...

His words weaken my resolve as shackles.

I shouldn't have heard that.

Sir Yagobei.

-But I'm going to do it! -No!

It's all for the lord!

Well...

The lord wants to fight the Tokugawa once again.

"But the battle shouldn't be caused by assassinating someone," Sir Saemon-no-suke said.

Sir Yagobei.

Do you want Sanada's name to disappear from this world?

Sir Saemon-no-suke said.

"If something happens, Lord Izu in Ueda will be accused."

"Then, the Sanada name will disappear."

This teahouse near Kakegawa, Totoumi, is...

KAKEGAWA, TOTOUMI

One of the seventeen Koga ninja houses along the Tokaido Highway

...to protect leyasu during his trip to Kyoto. -Go inside.

Kakubei left Mt. Kudo to ask help of Jugoro, who is stationed in this teahouse.

What are you doing in a place like this?

You came to ask my help, so you should stay here.

Sir Jugoro.

Sir Nekota Yosuke is here.

Reverend Jikai from the Ikoji Temple.

I am Sugisaka Jugoro.

This priest is called Jikai

JIKAI used to serve leyasu as a vassal.

He became a priest 20 years ago.

Now, he lives at the Iko-ji Temple, a Koga ninja hideout,

As the chief of Koga ninja who works along the Tokaido.

What?

-Who is he? -Yes.

Ah, Sir Higuchi of the Sanada clan?

-I see. -Stop whispering to each other.

Sir Higuchi!

Reverend Jikai.

Nekota Yosuke.

You've grown much older.

Why are you here!?

Hey!

Stop it.

Jugoro.

Lord of Yamato passed away two days ago.

What?

Lord of Yamato is no longer with us. Who's going to lead us now?

Tomo Naganobu.

Is he reliab...?

Lord of Yamato said.

"Be fully prepared along the Tokaido Highway."

"Stay on alert for Sanada ninja."

He also said, "Sanada ninja will try to kill the Senior Shogun."

But...

Sir Tomo Naganobu hasn't taken it seriously.

Sanada ninja might try to do it.

-Shut up, bonze. -Sir Higuchi!

Tomo Naganobu is right.

Lord Sanada Awa is ill in bed. Saemon-no-suke is plowing the field.

Besides, they have no vassal, no weapon.

The Sanada can do nothing now.

This won't do us any good.

Sir Yagobei.

I'll kill leyasu even if I cut ties with Sanada ninja!

Sir Yagobei!

Sir Yagobei!

Have a safe trip.

Need a hat?

We have more inside. I'll bring them over.

Wanna have some?

Thank you very much.

Oko is here! Come out!

-Ninja Oko is here! -What!?

She's going up on the back mountain!

Oko.

-It's me. -Sir Yagobei.

Oko.

Come inside.

Sir Jugoro!

Go ahead and follow her.

-I'll report to the Ikoji Temple. -Yes!

Why aren't you following her?

You want to let her go?

I'll kill her when nobody is around.

Jugoro!

Sanada ninja has already infiltrated into the Kakegawa Area...

Jugoro...

IKOJI TEMPLE

-Somebody? -Yes.

-Call other men over immediately. -Yes.

We're breaking off, as I feared...

You know.

I'm glad that I was born in the Sanada Estate.

Because I could work for the lord and got to know Sir Matagoro.

I could meet you, Oko.

The lord is confined on Mt. Kudo now.

Sir Matagoro died in action. Both of them must have been mortified.

That's why I cannot stay still.

I cannot stop feeling I must do something.

Oko.

-I should have been dead by now. -Sir Yagobei.

I tried to kill leyasu once, but I failed.

If that wasn't his double, he would have been dead.

When I think of that...

I'm so vexed...!

-Oko. -Yes?

From now on, I'm not a Sanada clan member or Sanada ninja.

You have to do something

For yourself, not for anyone else.

Sir Yagobei.

Sir Yagobei!

Shoot.

They found us.

Let them come as closer as possible.

Now!

Oko.

Here.

This kimono vendor is called Yamanobe Kiroku.

He is the ninja who has infiltrated into the castle town of Ueda, by Tomo Naganobu's order.

Nobuyuki came to spy on his kimono store, which had been used as a ninja hideout.

So that's the ninja hideout?

-Sir Sanjuro. -Yes.

-They might have another hideout in Numata. -Right. We are Tokugawa vassals.

They sent their ninja to spy on our fiefs?

I don't understand what the Shogun's family is thinking.

-Better say "unforgivable." -That's right!

-What shall we do? -Just crush them down.

Lord, no time to hesitate.

Crushing them down is easy.

But, doesn't that make the Shogun's family upset?

I wonder if we can make them leave quietly,

Without letting them know that we already know their presence...

-Hikoshiro. -Yes?

-Think up some good plan. -Yes.

Until then...

We just have to leave the kimono store alone.

Excuse me.

You just got a letter from the Shogun's family.

Lord?

An order from the Shogun's family.

"During the Senior Shogun's trip to Kyoto, Edo has less security."

"The Sanada clan must send 200 soldiers to Edo."

But...!

We already have 50 vassals at our clan's mansion in Edo.

200 more soldiers!?

"Lord Izu, send your oldest son to Edo."

-You mean, Prince Nobuyoshi? -As a hostage!?

What do they think the Sanada clan is!?

We have to obey them.

Just obey them. Endure it.

Saemon-no-suke.

Yes.

Even if the east and west break off, I cannot move any more.

What are you saying?

I want you to enter Osaka Castle for me.

The Sanada clan is small, but we have beaten the Uesugi.

We have beaten the Tokugawa's grand army twice.

Yes.

But... Lord Sanada Awa is...

-Look at me like this... -Father.

I have...

I have wanted to emerge onto the center stage of this country someday...

I have wanted to push out over the Shinano mountains that surround Ueda,

Gone far away to make the Sanada's name throughout this country...

That dream is disappearing.

I cannot make it come true.

Saemon-no-suke, I'll leave everything to you.

You know.

My dream didn't come true at Ueda Castle.

If you enter Osaka Castle, you can make my dream come true.

I wish Osaka Castle were mine...

I could have built a stable nation...

Saemon-no-suke.

I'm counting on you.

Beat leyasu and make the Sanada's name throughout this country again...

Once again...

Throughout this country...

On March 1,

Nobuyuki's first son, Nobuyoshi, is leaving for Edo as hostage.

In the Edo Front Town,

SANADA NOBUYOSHI you have to live up to the Sanada's name.

Yes.

You may go.

Stay well.

-Ina. -Yes.

This is just the beginning.

The Shogun's family will make more demands on our clan.

Shogun Hidetada hates the Sanada that much...?

The Senior Shogun is leaving for Kyoto in several days.

The Sanada's future will be determined then.

Father's and Saemon-no-suke's futures will be determined, too.
