In the fall of 1610,

Nobuyuki rushed to the Honda mansion in Edo,

As soon as he heard about his father-in-law being seriously ill.

This is Lord Izu.

Everyone, leave.

-Lord Izu. -Yes.

Why did you leave Ueda without permission?

Never make such a selfish action again.

Yes.

I'm not good.

What are you saying?

Ina is worried.

I wanted to see Ueda once.

You have to get well and visit us in Ueda.

-Listen to my living will. -Father!

Please listen.

You have to give up on a pardon for

Your father and brother on Mt. Kudo.

After I die, never ask the Shogunate for a pardon for them.

Next spring, the Senior Shogun is going to Kyoto again.

Then, the Toyotomi and Tokugawa clans will break off.

But you should not make any move.

To make the Sanada clan survive,

You should just follow the Shogunate's orders and make no other move.

You needn't come here when I die.

Even when your own father dies, you shouldn't travel.

Yes.

SUMPU CASTLE

Your Excellency.

Is your departure for Kyoto all right on March 6, as scheduled?

That's fine.

-Sado. -Yes?

-As to Osaka... -Yes.

The Right Minister's (Hideyori's) family will agree to see me in Kyoto this time?

If they agree to see you in Kyoto,

That means they decided to pay vassal homage to the Tokugawa clan.

Masazumi, do you think they will agree?

No. You should think they don't want to see you in Kyoto.

As long as the Toyotomi clan is in Osaka...

Ronin keep having a dream...

The shape and appearance of Osaka Castle attract people's minds and powers.

Regardless of their reply, the Toyotomi clan has to leave Osaka.

And then, what are pro-Toyotomi daimyo lords going to do?

Fukushima Masanori has gone senile.

The only concerns will be Kiyomasa and the Asano's brat.

Don't you think so?

Excuse me.

What is it?

An urgent messenger came from Edo.

He said Sir Honda Tadakatsu passed away.

Heihachiro...

EDO CASLTE I see.

Father is lamenting over him...

Yes.

He seems to have lost heart...

Having lost the backing from Honda Tadakatsu,

Lord Izu will be having a harder time from now.

Nobuyuki, too, was informed of Tadakatsu's death.

I'm going to sentence Father and Son Sanada to death.

Now, I'm going to stay with Lord Izu at Numata Castle...

And fight you, my lord!

On October 18, 1610,

Honda Heihachiro Tadakatsu,

A brave general known as one of the Four Heavenly Guardians of the Tokugawa clan, died.

This is over...

PENAL COLONY, MT. KUDO In November,

Masayuki was ill in bed.

Masayuki, too, was informed of Tadakatsu's death.

Now, we have no one who supports us...

Father.

Excuse me.

What is it?

You received another package from Saheiji in Ueda.

-Saemon-no-suke. -Yes.

Send a nice thank you note to Zushu's wife... I mean, to Saheiji.

I will.

Dear.

Please have some rest.

What is it?

As to the lord's illness,

He might not fully recover, because of his age...

-Mother. -Listen.

Can't we tell the Tokugawa clan about his illness and ask Nobuyuki to take care of him in Numata?

If we ask through Sir Asano, they might let...

Mother.

That would be hard.

I see...

Kakubei.

What are you doing here?

Nothing.

Kakubei...?

KODAI-IN'S MANSION, KYOTO. At the end of 1610,

An incident occurred at Kodai-in's mansion.

Hey! Water!

Bring me water!

-Somebody! -Water!

-Be careful. -Yes.

What's that about?

We found an old man lying in front of our gate. We brought him in.

The old man was the Sanada's Ninja Kosuke.

How is he?

He finally became conscious.

Do you have family?

This must be a fate.

-Let him live in one of the huts here. -Yes.

Around the time,

The keep of Nagoya Castle, the castle for leyasu's ninth son Yoshinao, was completed.

Kato Kiyomasa had been involved in the castle construction.

His daughter, Princess Ama, and leyasu's tenth son, Yorinobu, had been engaged.

In January 1611,

Kiyomasa, who had left Nagoya, arrived to Kyoto and visited Kodai-in.

We should stop strife between the Kanto and Osaka by all means.

I don't want them to break off.

How true.

When Sir leyasu comes to Kyoto this spring,

I want Lord Hideyori to see him in Kyoto, at any price.

Ieyasu has developed strong and stable power.

Now, it is unavoidable for the Toyotomi clan to pay vassal homage to the Tokugawa clan.

However...

Lady Yodo in Osaka is...

Yes.

If the Toyotomi clan pays homage to the Tokugawa clan but the two sides still break off,

I will barricade myself in Higo Province. I am determined to fight leyasu there.

I understand your thoughts, Lord Kazue.

Thank you.

It'll go bad if Osaka bows its head to the Kanto.

Report this to Miss Oko in Shimo-Koga.

So, what is Kiyomasa doing?

Kiyomasa and Kodai-in seem to want to prevent both sides from breaking off.

We'd better make both sides join hands.

Kiyomasa said, "If they break off, I will barricade myself in Higo and fight leyasu there."

How is Kumamoto?

As far as I see, Kumamoto Castle is strong enough to withstand siege.

Kiyomasa seems to have prepared for everything.

Sir Yagobei.

If Osaka bows its head to the Kanto,

The rulership finally falls into the Tokugawa's hands.

Then, the Sanada head family will have no chance to make its name.

Maybe they should break off, for the sake of the head family...

I'll try to kill leyasu again.

I'll make it this time.

I'll help you.

Sir Yagobei.

When are you going to do?

On his way to Kyoto.

But this is just between us.

Don't tell anyone on Mt. Kudo.

It's Nekota Yosuke, sir.

Wait outside.

-That's all right. Come in. -Yes.

Wait for a little while.

Now, as to security during the Senior Shogun's trip to Kyoto...

Put your men everywhere along the Tokaido Highway.

Yes.

I already sent out my instructions and tell them to stay on alert.

I'm concerned with other ninja.

Are you talking about Sanada ninja?

I don't think the people on Mt. Kudo are moving.

According to Jugoro,

Lord Awa hasn't given up on his ambition yet.

But he cannot do anything now.

-Do you think so? -Yes.

10 years on Mt. Kudo.

Father and Son Sanada have no power now.

One more thing.

One of my men, who infiltrated into Ueda, has settled down as a kimono store owner.

Excuse me then.

Sir Naganobu is a real softie.

Even if the people on Mt. Kudo don't move,

Their ninja will...!

The Senior Shogun is totally open to attack.

You and I can easily kill him.

Why don't you tell Sir Naganobu about that?

Sanada ninja will surely try to kill him when he goes to Kyoto.

Listen, Yosuke.

Lord Sanada Awa and I are close in age.

I really want to see him for some reason.

As the lord of a small province, he played the easy mark to the big power.

I've been attracted to him, for some reason.

Is he losing his energy and spirit, like me, as he gets older?

I want him to remain ambitious.

Let's forget.

Forget it.

Masayuki had gone through the worst of his illness.

You know.

I had been squirming my way out among big powers.

The Oda, and...

The Hojo.

The Uji-bug of the Hojo.

And... I drove the Uesugi out of Shinano Province.

Once during the Tensho Period (1573-1592).

And... once during the Battle of Sekigahara.

I was surrounded by tens of thousands of Tokugawa soldiers.

My army was 2,000 to 3,000-strong.

Hey.

Ten times... No, twenty times.

I beat such a grand army twice.

But...

Why is the loser Tokugawa acting big and...

You as the winner are staying here?

That's because...

What!?

That's why...

That's why I'm trying to start over...!

Start over...

Ah, Sasuke.

Toji is here.

Come in.

Tomorrow, Miss Oko is secretly coming to the cabin on the Kimi Pass.

She wants you to go and see her there.

I see.

Sasuke.

Take care of everything after I go out tomorrow.

Yes.

Oh, my. You have a good appetite this morning.

Yeah.

-Here, pickled plum. -Plum!?

Kume.

-Oooooh! Delicious! -I'll do it.

Yes...

What? You're doing?

-Something wrong? -Oh, no!

You never fed me at Ueda.

Here.

-You do it. -Yes!

-Father. -What?

I'm going to the Renge-Join (Lotus Temple) now.

All right. See you.

The head priest invited me. So I'll have fun there tonight.

Say hello to the priest.

Yes.

Brother Genji.

Please take me with you.

But...

I'm dying to go out.

But only I have been invited to the temple.

Can't you work around that?

Kakubei, don't be unreasonable.

-Brother Genji. -Kakubei.

I want you to hold the fort while I'm gone.

Take care of my father.

Strange? What do you mean?

-That one, Kume. -What's so strange about her?

You haven't noticed?

-It's been 10 years since she came here. -Yes.

I wonder if the lord was having affairs with her before...

-Are you sure? -I'm not.

Then, I don't know what to say...

I finally found out ten years later. For heaven's sake!

How silly of you...

I hope I'm not silly enough to have missed other women...

Are you still suspicious of me?

That's not what I mean.

You are so mean...

You're crying again?

Uh...

Something wrong?

No, we're fine.

Well, Oko.

I wanted you to see my father on Mt. Kudo.

Yes...

Oko.

How is everything on Mt. Kudo?

Everything is being peaceful.

Lady Yamanote is doing well, too?

Your wife, too?

I bet your children are growing healthy.

-What is the matter, Oko? -Yes?

You're acting strange.

Strange?

You don't seem like yourself.

Would you like to eat?

Oko.

I don't want you to be buried up on this mountain...

The Sanada fought the Tokugawa twice. We beat them both times.

Such a great clans's second son shouldn't be buried like this...

Oko.

I want you to make your name once again and swagger along streets.

To make it happen, I will...

Oko.

What are you thinking?

To make it happen, I'm determined to sacrifice my life.

What are you going to do?

This might be my last time to see you.

You're going to sacrifice your life for what?

Tell me.

I can't.

If you don't, I'm not going to see you as a Sanada clan member any more.

I'm going to kill leyasu on his way to Kyoto.

You can't.

You can kill leyasu only on the battlefield.

Ieyasu's head is not what I want.

My earnest desire is to make my mark on the battlefield as a Sanada warrior.

Don't take me wrong.

But... if there isn't another battle...?

You have to stay on Mt. Kudo for the rest of your life.

Listen, Oko.

If you guys try to kill leyasu now,

My brother and his family in Ueda will be accused.

I don't want to cause any trouble for him.

I want you to understand it. What is it?

Just...

Came up with some wild idea...

Please tell me.

Actually...

My father Nagamasa sent his ninja to Osaka Castle a long time ago.

He still works there as a chef. That's great.

I want to walk around in the garden.

No, you shouldn't.

The lord has...!

Let's lift him.

Kakubei.

How did it happen? You were with him.

-He wanted to walk around... -Why didn't you stop him?

What are you going to do if the worst happens?

It was all my fault!

You should send out a notice now.

Doctor...!?

To send the news to Ueda, Sasuke ran toward the Sanada mansion in Fushimi.

In Ueda,

Something was going on upstairs at a tub store.

Why do you think that kimono store is suspicious?

-Tell him. -Yes.

First, they have visitors during dead hours at night.

The visitors are all out-of-towners.

I wonder if that's a ninja hideout.

Ninja hideout?

Um...

She is Kae, sister of Ninja Toji.

She is able to sniff out ninja.

To tell the truth...

A ninja has infiltrated into this castle town.

What?

Tsunoya, a kimono store that started business in Haramachi a month ago, might be the ninja hideout.

Are you sure?

According to Ninja Toji's sister, who runs a tub store across the street,

He might be Koga ninja.

-Koga? -Yes.

Are Tokugawa ninja watching the Sanada clan? No.

Then...?

Probably, by an order from Edo, Shogun Hidetada...

The Shogun's family seems to hate the Sanada clan so much.

Excuse me.

What is it?

We just received an urgent letter from Sir Ukon in Fushimi.

Father is in critical condition...?

My lord...!

Dear?

Can't you get permission from the Shogunate to travel to Mt. Kudo?

I don't think so.

But...

Your father is dying...

I cannot ask for anything from the Shogunate.

That's what your father told me before he died.

"Even if..."

"Even if your father dies, you shouldn't make any move," he said.

Then, go incognito.

Ina.

Tokugawa ninja have infiltrated into Ueda Castle Town.

I cannot make careless moves.

Nobuyuki was feeling grief as a small provincial lord.

He thought of his father Masayuki, who has been feeling the same way for more than 20 years.

He was thinking of his father who survived the times.

In 1611,

Spring was just around the corner in Shinano Province.
