the Dust Bowl or the Great Depression,

but what followed made
hell on earth look forgiving

and would leave families broken,

as thousands of children
were orphaned

across a nation
clamoring for a sense of hope.

What they didn't know
was that hope was coming.

But it wasn't coming
in the form of rain.
