NUMATA CASTLE

At Numata Castle, Nobuyuki had been impatiently waiting for an order from leyasu.

He finally received an order from leyasu.

What does it say?

He wants us to join Sir Hidetada's army,

And go to Mino Province via the Nakasendo Highway.

Yes?

If we take the Nakasendo Highway, we have to pass near Ueda.

The head family is in Ueda.

I wonder if Father would let Sir Hidetada's Army pass quietly...

It might turn into a battle...

I might have to attack his castle.

Battle against the head family...?

Well...

Sir Hidetada cannot be engaged only in Shinano Province.

It's nothing to worry about...

You have your mother, auntie and younger sister at Ueda Castle.

I heard this from my ninja.

Izu is joining Hidetada's Army and comes down the Nakasendo Highway.

Go ahead and come.

If it turns into a battle,

He will be in the van of the army, because he is familiar with the geography here.

Exciting...!

You cannot fight your son very often.

I wonder how he would launch an attack...?

How should I lick his adversary?

My Lord.

Sir Higuchi Kakubei is at the gate.

What?

So?

In front of the gate, he is shouting, "Let me in the castle!"

-Don't let him in. -Father.

He is the enemy.

Saemon-no-suke.

MAIN GATE, UEDA CASTLE

What happened to your face?

That's a sword cut, right?

Kakubei, I heard you left my brother's castle. What did you do?

Why did you leave?

Brother Genji.

-Why aren't you letting me in? -Kakubei.

Why? I want to join the Lord's army.

You had been sent to Numata, hadn't you?

That means you are my brother's vassal.

You should go back to Numata.

-I'm not going back. -Don't be willful!

Soon, this castle will be surrounded by the great Tokugawa army.

I don't want to side with the Tokugawa.

I want to work for the head family.

And, I have my own mother in this castle.

My Lord.

Ah, Hisano.

My Lord.

I heard Kakubei has come back.

Yeah. He is saying he wants to join my army.

But I'm not going to let him in this castle.

Why?

Until now, he betrayed me every time I forgave him.

-Please forgive him once again. -No, I won't.

Please.

-No! -Please!

I already gave him to Lord Izu. He is my enemy now.

That's why I cannot let him in.

I beg you!

No!

What?

-He is... -He is...?

He is your son, isn't he?

My Lord...

My Lord...

Well... that's different...

You know, Hisano. That's different.

Hisano!

Hisano...!

Sister, I was just...

What is it?

What are you doing?

Yes... I was talking about... Kakubei...

Dear.

I heard Genzaburo, I mean Lord Izu, is attacking Ueda.

What are you going to do then?

What are you...?

Are you going to fight?

If it turns into a battle, I have no choice.

But you can't kill Genzaburo.

Dear.

I'm counting on you. -Dear! -My Lord!

-Dear! -My Lord!

Ah, Okoku. What is the matter?

What is wrong? You were raising your voice.

I just heard from Sir Sanjuro. Is Sir Kakubei back?

-Is that true? -Yes.

Where is he now?

Well, that's...

-The Lord is not going to forgive... -All right!

I'll forgive him.

Thank you!

Dear, please consider Genzaburo...

Okiku, let's go.

-Let's go and see Kaku. -I'm going, too!

NUMATA CASTLE Hurry up!

Do we have to attack Ueda?

Well, it's all up to Sir Hidetada.

As long as we take the Nakasendo, we can simply go west from Oiwake and Komoro.

We don't have to pass Ueda.

But... what if soldiers sally out from Ueda?

Father won't provoke a fight.

It's all up to Sir Hidetada, but...

What is the matter?

Sir Hidetada seems to be planning to attack Ueda.

Is that true?

He seems to be feeling rushed to distinguish himself.

He might want to see Sir leyasu, after he distinguishes himself.

Reporting.

A travelling samurai is here. He wants to see you, Lord of Izu.

See me?

Pleased to meet you.

I am Takigawa Sankuro Kazuatsu.

I am Lord Izu Nobuyuki. Did you know about Sir Ukon and me?

He told me you helped him a lot. Let me thank you.

-Oh, you are very welcome. -Thanks.

Oh, no...

I could mention Sir Ukon's name to see you, but...

I didn't want you to be pressured, so...

Well, we, the Sanada, owe you, Sir Takigawa.

20 years ago, we received so much kindness from your grandfather, Sir Shogen.

Oh, no... Please don't mention my grandfather...

Now, what did you bring here?

I heard you might have to attack your father and brother shortly.

How exciting!

-Exciting, you said? -Yes.

You might be feeling uneasy, but it is exciting to us, bystanders.

What are you doing now, Sir Sankuro?

With no master or vassals, I'm just travelling around.

What are you doing by travelling around?

I'm travelling around for no purpose. TOKUGAWA HIDETADA with 38,000 soldiers, for Shinano Province.

On August 24, in Mino Province,

The Eastern Army, which conquered Gifu Castle, passed north of Ogaki, heading Akasaka.

OGAKI CASTLE

UKITA HIDEIE

SHIMAZU YOSHIHIRO How fast the Eastern Army is moving!

KONISHI YUKINAGA They must be stationed in Akasaka tonight.

Sir Jibu.

Why don't we make a night attack on their camp tonight?

-Night attack? -Yes.

Tonight.

But the Interior Minister, who is their Commander-in-Chief, is still in Edo...

So what?

We shouldn't lose any more soldiers before our decisive battle with him.

Are you going to fight without getting hurt?

Even if we lose some soldiers, it will be fine if we kill a lot more enemies.

That's how battles are.

-But. -We are in the middle of battle now, Sir Jibu.

Decisive battle is not the only battle.

We've been tired since the last battle, but the enemy is tired, too.

They must be catching their breath in Akasaka.

We should make a night attack now to lift our spirit.

Otherwise, it will harm our spirit in the decisive battle later, right?

However...

We shouldn't make a night attack...

Jibu doesn't know how to fight.

He is totally unreliable!

TOKUGAWA IEYASU'S ARMY

On September 1,

Tokugawa leyasu left Edo to go west.

NINJA HIDEOUT, KASAGAMI

This might be our last chance to see each other like this.

Listen well to my words. This might be my last order.

Our only target is leyasu's head.

Don't pay attention to anything else.

Our attack plan is twofold.

Split into two groups and do your jobs in your own group.

Split into two groups and do your jobs in your own group. Yagobei, you are in charge of Group One.

Yagobei, you are in charge of Group One.

Yes.

Group One has Jinpachi, Tahei, Sukezo, Minematsu, Kumeji, Rokuro.

My Group Two has...

Saizo, Senzo, Yaheiji, Murasuke, Juzo...

Gonza.

-Take care of the cabin in Shimo-Koga. -Yes.

-Kosuke, take care of the cabin in Naga-Sone. -Yes.

-Toji. -Yes.

Go back to the Sanada Estate.

Yes.

I'll put you in charge of the Ninja House in the Sanada Estate.

Yes.

The rest stay here. Make sure you keep communication with other cabins and Ueda.

Umc What shall l...?

I already told you.

-Please let me go after leyasu's head. -No.

-Excuse us then. -Yeah.

After you get leyasu's head, you all go back to Ueda.

Yes.

Sir Matagoro.

Have a moment?

Please allow me to aim at leyasu's head by myself.

As a girl ninja, there might be something I can do.

Please.

Even if I say no, you won't listen to me.

Gonza.

Kosuke.

Toji.

-I'm counting on you. -Yes.

Sir Matagoro.

Take care of the rest.

"Farewell."

"Thanks for a long time."

Let's go now.

Sasuke!

YAMANAKA MANSION, KOGA

The Western Army will be moving faster and faster.

Yes.

You intercept messengers from Mitsunari and other Western Army generals.

I have a favor to ask you.

From now on, Sanada ninja will be moving on their own discretion, not by Lord Awa's orders.

They must have attacked our hideouts in Mt. Bishop and other places.

Given how those things developed, they must be making desperate moves. Please let me work near Lord leyasu, in his army.

Lord of Yamato.

Sanada ninja are now working without Lord Awa's orders.

If they are working for the Western Army, they have only one target.

Lord leyasu's life.

Oko will surely...

Um... Sanada ninja will show up.

Please let me kill them...!

I understand.

You may.

Thank you!

I'll ask Yamanaka Takumi to let you join Lord leyasu's army.

Thank you!

You may leave now.

-Jugoro, are you there? -Yes.

-Did you hear it? -Yes.

You intercept the Western Army's secret messengers.

Yes, sire.

One more thing.

Go to the Osaka Front Town.

Spread a rumor that Mashita Nagamori is going to betray the Western Army.

Yes.

If Mori Terumoto hears it, he cannot leave Osaka Castle.

TOKUGAWA HIDETADA'S HEADQUARTERS On the same day,

Hidetada's army set up headquarters in Matsuida, Kozuke.

Lord of Izu, you must be having a real hard time.

This is nothing, sir.

We are going up the Nakasendo Highway.

But before that, we have to subdue our route at any cost.

Yes.

For example...

Ueda Castle.

If we leave Ueda Castle alone, Sanada Awa might join hands with Uesugi Kagekatsu.

They might make a surprise attack on Edo.

Now, I'm thinking of encouraging Lord Sanada Awa to vacate Ueda Castle.

I want two of you to go and see him as my messengers.

HONDA TADAMASA The main messenger is you, Lord of Mino.

Lord of Izu, I want you to accompany Lord of Mino.

Yes.

Anyway,

HONDA MASANOBU Lord Izu's wife is Lord Mino's older sister.

You two are brothers-in-law.

You are the right persons to this duty.

Now, how shall we do it?

I'll leave it to both of you.

Well, we're going to Ueda now,

Send a messenger, and meet Lord Sanada Awa at the Kokubunji (Regional Temple).

Tell him, "If you refuse to meet us, we will attack Ueda."

Yes, sire!

UEDA CASTLE

Father.

I heard the Tokugawa's messenger has come. Is that true?

Things are turning out just as I expected.

As you expected?

Hidetada might be coming to Ueda.

What did the messenger say?

Down there.

They want to meet me down there, at the Kokubunji Temple.

What is the meeting for?

They just want us to vacate the castle. If not, the Tokugawa will attack us.

If so, we can just fight them.

We might lose.

Vacating the castle is a loss, too.

You should take a chance to fight them.

Father.

Are you going to Kokubunji?

That's what I mean.

Don't go!

They are trying to lure you out and kill you.

Father.

According to a report from ninja, the messengers waiting for me at Kokubunji are...

Lord Honda Mino and...

Izu!

Brother?

I wonder how Izu looks like now, looking at this castle.

At the Kokubunji Temple, Takigawa Sankuro accompanied Nobuyuki as his attendant.

Do you think he will surely come?

Well... I'm just worried...

Reporting.

Several cavaliers are coming from Ueda.

I am Lord Sanada Awa Masayuki.

I am Lord Honda Mino Tadamasa.

I am Lord Sanada Izu Nobuyuki.

-Now, Lord of Awa. -Yes.

We understand your obligation to Ishida Jibu, but...

I think you shouldn't be engaged in a fruitless battle now.

Ha.

Why don't you vacate your castle gracefully?

If I vacate my castle, what are you going to do then?

-Well, that's... -That's...?

If you vacate your castle, we will sweep the slate clean after this battle.

Well, I understand.

I cannot be unkind to Lord Izu, who has taken the trouble to see me as a messenger.

So?

I will vacate my castle.

Thank you very much.

Well...

I didn't expect to see my own son here.

On my way here, I was going to refuse.

Yes?

We were determined to fight.

-Now... -Yes?

Since we were determined to fight, we haven't cleaned our castle. It's all dirty.

Before we vacate our castle, we would like to clean it in every corner.

Then, I will hand the castle over to Lord of Musashi (Sir Hideyori).

If you see the dirty castle now, we will be laughed at for having a dirty main castle.

We built Ueda Castle after we experience countless hardships.

I feel for you.

Therefore, I want you to give us three days.

Actually, we need ten days, but I don't want to be unreasonable in such a situation.

Three days, right?

Then, we can clean the castle completely.

Are you going to vacate your castle three days later?

Yes, I am.

Really? He said he is going to clean the castle?

He asked us to give him three days, so we agreed.

-Three days, huh? -Yes.

Well, it's all right.

It's good because we captured a castle without losing a single soldier.

-My father will be happy, too. -Yes.

I guess Lord Awa cannot defy his son.

Anyway, thanks for your hard work.

Father.

How did it go?

Lord Izu looked surprised when I said, "I will vacate the castle."

So you are...?

We don't have to fight him then?

Where are we going?

You can stay here.

I'm not giving my castle to them.

Saemon-no-suke.

To make Hidetada's army miss the decisive battle,

How many days should we make them stay here?

Seven days.

Dear... so you...?

You lied to Genzaburo?

Didn't you put him in trouble?

He realized my true intention ages ago.

Father!

Welcome home!

Did you see my brother from Numata?

Yeah, I did. I saw him.

He is well.

Did you give him my regards?

-Yeah, I did. I gave him. -Thank you.

He asked me to give you his regards.

Thank you.

He also said, "After this battle, I want to invite Okiku to Numata Castle."

Thank you.

OGAKI CASTLE

Meanwhile, Ishida Mitsunari was writing a secret letter to Mori Terumoto in Osaka Castle...

...to ask Terumoto to go to battle.

...to ask Terumoto to go to battle. In the same Mino Province,

In the same Mino Province,

There was a village named Nagamori-mura, one mile east of Gifu Castle.

Oko was staying at a local peasant's house there.

Ah, you got well.

-Sorry for all the troubles. -Not at all.

When I found you lying at our door, I thought you were dead.

Thanks a lot.

You got well. I'm really glad.

Thanks to your help...

Are you travelling?

Um, yes...

-Where are you going? -Um...

My husband is a travelling merchant, but...

I haven't heard from him for three months.

That's why I'm looking for him.

But...

I started thinking he's not alive anymore... Senshu (Izumi Province).

But I have no place to go back there...

If you don't mind an untidy place like this,

You can stay here as long as you want.

Only my wife and I live here. Just make yourself at home.

Here, eat some more.

-Good. -Right.

Three days later, it was the deadline for Masayuki to vacate his castle.

But Masayuki didn't appear even if the scheduled meeting time passed.

Reporting.

Lord Sanada Awa's messenger just came here.

Why did he send a messenger?

-Bring him in. -Yes.

Why Lord Awa is not coming?

I am Yazawa Yoriyasu, Sanada Awa's vassal.

I came here as Lord Awa's representative.

What is Lord Awa going to do?

I will tell you my master's message.

"I decided to hold up in Ueda Castle. Please go ahead and attack us, if you want."

That's what he said.

What?

Damn Lord Awa...

Damn Lord Awa...!

We'll advance the army to Ueda.

I'll crush the pygmy like the Sanada!

-Young Lord. -Any objection?

No.

What? Tell me.

As things have turned out like this, Lord Awa would take quick moves.

He might make a night attack. Please prepare for that.

Hidetada is setting up a headquarters in the Someya Plateau?

He must be angry.

Uncle.

Let's make a night attack tonight.

How interesting.

Father.

They have my brother.

-We don't have to hold back. -That's not what I mean.

Brother must already know about our night attack plan.

It's no use.

Zushu is able to see through our game.

I wonder what he is doing.

Because of us, he might be feeling awkward in the Tokugawa army.

It's going to be a decisive battle tomorrow.

Father.

I'm going to enter Toishi Castle with Kakubei.

Good luck.

You, too.

Thank you.

Is it going to be a battle, as I feared...?

I've experienced many battles, so I know what's coming.

But Genzaburo is our enemy now...

Sister.

I don't want any more battles. You might lose your husband, children, brothers and relatives.

Who likes such a battle?

Mother. Auntie.

Let's ask Father to avoid battle.

Let's tell him to vacate this castle.

If we lose this castle, where can we live?

People can live without a castle.

You may be right, but...

We can live by a river at the Sanada Estate or Bessho.

As long as we have a small house that keeps the night dew from us, that's fine.

You have to eat to live.

We can plow the soil to grow food.

I guess a samurai cannot lead a life like that...

Bad news from the Lord?

The battle between the Tokugawa and the head family is unavoidable.

I know this is how samurai are, but...

The son has to be engaged in battle against his own father.

If I were the Lord, could I point my sword at my father and my younger brother Tadamasa?

I wonder how the Lord is feeling now...

Mt. Taro, Ueda Castle, Toishi Castle, the Kan River...

The Sanada Estate, the Shioda Field, and Bessho...

Nobuyuki's map has many familiar names to him.

Those places are in the enemy territory now.
