Lanruo Temple

What happened?

Nothing, Mentor.

Stop.

What's that sound?

Mentor, I think it's coming from over there.

- Let's go take a look. - Yes, Mentor.

Why is there a boat?

Get on board and have a look.

- Come here. - Come here.

Don't run away, pretty girl.

Come here.

Come here.

I've been waiting for you for a long time.

Tianlang, Qisha, Xuanjing, take your positions.

Big Dipper and all stars return to position.

Initiate.

Mentor, that was amazing.

I didn't expect it to be so easy.

What's happening?

- What's happening? - What's going on?

Second Brother.

- Mentor. - Get into formation.

With the Big Dipper and five elements in place

and Vajra's protection, may evil be subdued.

The spirit of a demon hunter

is delicious indeed.

Old witch, must you hit below the belt?

Come after me if you dare.

The two of you should practise more.

Yes, Granny.

Demons, I'm going to subdue all of you.

Guobei County

Senior Master, you died so tragically.

Get out of the way.

Get lost.

Will a kind soul please spare me some money?

- Step aside. - What are you looking at?

Please have pity on me.

Will you be kind enough to spare me some money?

Please spare me some money.

- You're such a kind man... - Here you go.

Lad, lend me your bowl.

What are you doing? Stop right there.

Return the money to me.

- Stay still. - He's the guy.

- It's him, Brother. - It's you.

Sir, I'm really not the one you're looking for.

- That one looks more like him. - Brother.

- You, stop right there. - Stop.

The last strike of the Big Dipper.

Protect Heaven and subdue all evil.

You wretched man.

- Are you blind? Get lost. - I'm sorry...

How am I supposed to survive?

Sir, come and buy a coffin from my shop.

- No, thanks. - It's good to be prepared.

No, thanks.

Do you think you're immortal?

Sir.

Come on, drink up.

- Cheers. - Cheers.

Come on.

- Hello, sir. - Boss.

What would you like to drink?

Can I have a bowl of... plain water?

Just plain water?

What a poor wretch.

- Brother. - Come on, drink up.

Let's drink to our hearts' content today.

- Let's get wasted. - Let's drink up.

Here you go, poor wretch.

- Here, cheers. - Cheers.

- Who did this? - This is a hidden weapon.

Who used the steamed bun as a hidden weapon?

Shirky Eight, was this done by you?

Was this done by your gang?

Richy Seven, don't malign me.

Kill them, guys.

Stop fighting...

Stop fighting...

Stop fighting. Excuse me. Stop fighting.

Stop fighting...

Ancestors above, I'm Ning Caichen.

I hope you do not mind these offerings

as your unfilial descendant here

is unable to go home to offer prayers to you.

What a beautiful painting.

It's such a pity to leave it here.

I'm sensing an evil presence.

Yan Chixia, stop right there.

Zhiqiu Yiye, aren't you sick of

chasing after me for three days?

Wizardry is like martial arts.

There can be many academic experts

but only one top fighter.

Let's find out if the top wizard is you or me.

Come here.

Is it fun?

The spell of immobilisation.

Lad, I need your help.

Are you doing this for real?

Do I look like I'm clowning around?

You haven't improved at all, Zhiqiu Yiye.

I'm done playing with you.

Yan Chixia, stay right there.

Wind, thunder, rain and lightning, combine.

Rise.

Rise...

Stay right there.

Can somebody help me?

Stay right there.

Where's the painting?

What a fool.

Count yourself lucky.

You forced me to do this.

That child isn't mine.

It's definitely not mine.

Who is it?

I saw you.

Is anyone here?

May I know if there's anyone here?

Is anyone here?

May I know...

It's you.

Miss, have we met somewhere before?

Please pardon my lack of manners...

I'm Ning Caichen and I'm on my way

to the capital for the imperial exam.

I'm wondering if I can spend the night here.

I'm sorry for bothering you.

Mr Ning.

If you don't mind

you can stay here for the night.

Thank you very much.

Sorry for the trouble...

Miss, you walked so fast.

Please come in.

Miss, it's freezing here.

I think you've probably caught a cold.

Have a cup of hot tea first.

All right...

What's that sound?

Mr Ning...

Maybe something got knocked over.

- It doesn't matter. - You can't say that...

What if something valuable got knocked over?

Let me take a look for you.

Mr Ning, you were so naughty.

You've torn my dress.

I- I-I didn't mean to.

I didn't mean to.

Mr Ning, I feel so cold.

But I feel so hot.

I'm sorry...

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry.

No...

See no evil, hear no evil.

See no evil, hear no evil.

See no evil.

A gentleman must be magnanimous...

I mustn't do something like this.

Ning Caichen, you're just like a stone.

You're like a stone.

- I'm sorry. - Who did this?

- I'm sorry... - Was it you?

- I'm sorry... - Do you have a death wish?

- I can kill you right now. - I'm sorry...

It's you.

No, you've got the wrong person.

I've finally found you

after a long and fruitless search.

Don't you think you should apologise

for making me so miserable?

Stop the hocus-pocus.

Are you going to tell me there's a demon?

There is.

I knew you'd say that.

In the name of Heaven and Earth

track it down.

Is there really a demon?

This is a powerful demon.

Could it just be the wind?

Is your instrument broken?

Why is Granny here?

This vital essence smells so nice.

Evil witch

I'm going to expose your true form today.

The spirit of the five elements

condenses the aura and manifests it.

With thunder troops at His command

the Great One metes out punishment.

Wind, thunder and earthquake, show your powers.

I'm not your target; she is.

Forget it. I'll do it myself.

Little wizard, you're still too green.

- Let go of him. - Help!

Help!

You're full of pure vital essence.

Old witch, let go of him.

The Swift Sword.

Miss, it's you.

I could've handled this on my own, busybody.

This isn't the time for bravado.

Miss, be careful. It's dangerous here.

Hide behind me.

Miss, it's...

Miss?

He's such a fool.

Miss.

- Pipe down. - Miss.

You... Where did you go just now?

Watch out.

The Sword flies in all directions.

The Big Dipper unleashes five flames.

You saved my life again.

But I still didn't get your name.

My name is Nie Xiaoqian.

Nie Xiaoqian?

It's a beautiful name.

Wretched demon hunter

each of us has our own territory.

Why are you picking on me?

You can kill the wicked ones for all I care.

But look at this scholar.

Although he won't become a great man

he's a fine-looking gentleman

with extraordinary charisma like mine.

He doesn't deserve to be killed by you.

You're such a busybody.

This scholar is mine.

You aren't showing us respect then.

I'll take both your vital essences as well.

It's the Whistle of the Black Soul.

The Black Mountain Demon is summoning me.

Count yourselves lucky.

She ran away so fast.

I haven't taught her a lesson yet.

Hey, lad, how are you feeling?

You're a lucky fellow.

Hades won't be taking you in for now.

- How is he? - Don't worry.

I've already exorcised the evil spirit in him.

Why did you provoke that old witch again?

It was all because of him.

What brought you here

in the middle of the night then?

That old witch's aura brought me here.

Since both of you are all right, I'm leaving.

- You can't leave. - Why?

Our competition isn't over yet.

Here comes the old witch again.

Where?

You tricked me. Stay right there, wait for me.

I've been summoned by the Black Soul.

How may I be of service to His Excellency?

So, it's about the marriage.

His Excellency can send someone

to pick up his bride in three days' time.

Those wretched demon hunters

did a number on my vitality.

Bring me that useless wretch.

Don't assume I don't know what you did.

Tell me.

Why did you spare that scholar time and again?

Granny, calm down.

This would've been in the bag for Xiaoqian

if the two demon hunters didn't sabotage us.

I don't think so.

Wretched demon hunters

I'll torture you until you're dead.

Granny, simmer down.

The demon hunters

can't protect that scholar forever.

Why don't you let Xiaoqian try again?

It's not too late to punish her

if she fails again.

Granny, Xiaoqian has already failed once.

Why don't you give me a chance?

Did I allow you to speak?

Xiaoqian

you've always been the apple of my eye.

That scholar's pure vital essence

is very important to me.

You've to get it for me.

Otherwise...

- Don't let me down. - Yes, Granny.

Where am I?

Oh dear, I've to be on my way.

Don't worry.

I'll help you plead with Granny again.

This place is like an abyss.

Nothing can escape from here.

We're like goose feathers in the abyss.

We'll only sink

to our eternal doom.

You aren't a goose feather.

You'll leave this place someday.

With the Soul-Constraining Bell entrapping us

there's nowhere we can go.

In Granny's eyes

I'm just one of her puppets.

What a heavy rain.

There's an abandoned temple. Great.

Lanruo Temple?

Demons!

There are demons!

Do I really look like a demon?

You...

You're that bearded man.

What bearded man?

My name is Yan Chixia.

Yan Chixia?

Pipe down.

There are many people sleeping here.

Don't wake them up

or you might die sooner than you think.

What are you doing here

in the middle of the night?

I'm here to stay for the night.

Stay for the night?

Do you know who are the people staying here?

A- Are they...

dead people?

Yes.

Here, come with me.

Forget it. I-I'll pass...

It's raining cats and dogs

and the Yin energy is strong.

This is exactly the time

when demons wander around.

Come on.

I've arranged a decent room for you.

Don't worry. It's very safe here.

I find it strange that

such a huge temple is so dilapidated.

This place used to be

the residence of an aristocratic family.

Later, for some reason

the whole family died tragically one night.

In a bid to curb the evil forces

local folks raised funds to build this temple.

However, when construction was completed

the abbot fell ill and died.

And the rest of the monks left.

In the end

only these unclaimed corpses remain.

Why do you want to stay here then?

Are you homeless too?

Don't ask tactless questions

or I'll rip your tongue off.

This is your room.

I'll be sleeping alone?

Are you expecting me to tuck you in?

No...

I'll lend you this book.

It's called Spell of Exorcism

and it's meant to ward off evil spirits.

W- W-What's the meaning of this?

If you encounter demons, just read the spell.

No matter what you hear, don't open the door.

You can't take material possessions with you

to your afterlife.

So, why don't you do a good deed

and let me have it?

There's an evil presence.

There's no escape for you.

You can't get away from me so easily.

- Help! - I'm not afraid of you.

Help!

Help!

Help!

Help...

Saving lives is the top priority.

Help!

Nie Xiaoqian?

The reeds are green and lush

while the sparkling dew turns into frost.

The lady whom I love

is right by the stream.

What are you talking about?

I- I mean

I didn't expect to meet you here.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian, what's wrong?

My entire family has been killed by demons.

If I hadn't fled here as fast as I could

I might also have been...

Xiaoqian.

Don't be afraid.

It's all right now.

Xiaoqian, w-what are you doing?

I'm doing what all men like to do.

Xiaoqian, you're so unpredictable.

We can't do this, Xiaoqian. We can't.

You're messing up my clothes.

You can mess up my mind, but not the clothes.

No...

Clothes can be messed up, but not the mind.

I must stay level-headed...

Are you afraid of me?

No, I'm not.

- Why are you avoiding me then? - I...

There are demons. I'm scared.

Demons? Where are they?

Where are the demons? Don't be afraid...

D- D-Demons.

Xiaoqian, what's wrong?

What's this?

This is a spell to subdue demons.

- Yes, hold this, Xiaoqian. - No.

Yan Chixia said that

only demons are afraid of this.

Are you a demon?

But that's not possible.

How can a pretty lady like you be a demon?

Only a demon would be so beautiful.

Xiaoqian...

Leave.

You're willing to let me leave?

If you don't leave now

you'll be a goner when Yan Chixia gets here.

Even if you let me go this time

I won't be grateful to you.

You'd better not regret your decision.

Xiaoqian.

Unfortunately, she's a demon.

If only she's a human being.

That bearded man is worth his salt.

I was almost killed by him today.

The lady whom I love

is right by the stream.

You're behaving a little strangely today.

I'm not.

He'll be killed by Granny sooner or later.

Don't destroy yourself because of him.

I know.

Xiaoqian, all men are vile.

They pretend to be nice to you

only because you're useful to them.

Once you outlive your usefulness

they'll ditch you right away.

Don't worry.

I'll do it

when it gets dark.

Why is such a nice lady a demon?

You didn't sleep well last night?

I slept like a baby.

This is such a chaotic world.

You should learn martial arts as self-defence

instead of reading so many useless books.

You don't understand.

We should learn from the ancient sages

precisely because we live in troubled times.

Yan Chixia

since you're such a powerful wizard

why don't you go out there and make your mark?

Just study your classics

and stay out of my business.

You don't look like a bad person to me.

If you're willing to study hard

you'll definitely become a good official.

A good official?

I'm too old for that.

My book is on fire.

Granny.

Xiaoqian isn't back yet.

Aren't you going to rein her in?

All of you are simply useless.

In order to make a breakthrough this time

I must have that scholar's pure vital essence.

Twin Maras, it's been 300 years.

You must be very lonely, right?

It's time to go out for a walk.

It's mealtime...

Some of you were killed by your enemies

while some of you died in a foreign land.

But that's good in a sense.

While I'm stuck in these troubled times

you can enjoy peace in the afterlife.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

There's an evil presence again?

This place is really popular among the demons.

We're closed. Please go back.

There are deities in Heaven and on Earth.

The celestial beings have arrived.

A mortal like you should take your leave.

What an audacious claim, given your evil aura.

This is audacious behaviour from a mere mortal.

Kill without mercy...

Stay there. Seal.

Have a good sleep.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian, why are you here?

Oh no. Xiaoqian, leave now

or you'll be doomed when Yan Chixia gets here.

Move it.

Xiaoqian, what's wrong?

Didn't you know...

I was here to kill you previously?

Xiaoqian, if my life is so important to you

you can...

you can just take it.

You're such a fool.

Leave now.

When Granny arrives

you won't be able to leave.

What about you then?

I'll think of a way. Don't worry about me.

No, we should leave together.

Yan Chixia.

Wait for me here, Xiaoqian. Don't go out.

Yan Chixia...

Yan Chixia.

Stay right there. It's dangerous over here.

Yan Chixia, are you all right?

Do you need any help?

Go and get me the sword.

The sword? All right. The sword...

Xiaoqian.

Why is there another demon?

She's my friend.

I've two friends here too.

Shall I introduce them to you?

No, thanks...

Throw the sword to me.

Catch it.

I only missed by a little bit.

It's dangerous here. Let's go.

The big fellow has lost.

It's your turn, tiny one.

Hurry. Granny must be nearby

since the Twin Maras were summoned.

My Spell of Exorcism...

We're running out of time.

My Spell of Exorcism.

Granny.

Granny, I told you so.

She really fell in love with that man.

If we hadn't followed her all the way here

we would still have been hoodwinked by her.

Why would you rather trust a man

than listen to my advice?

Shuangshuang, please hear me out.

Demons!

Look. This is the way men are.

Xiaoqian, I've always doted on you most.

If you want to get married

I can betroth you to Black Mountain Demon.

No.

Granny, I beg of you.

Please don't betroth me to him.

I beg of you.

Granny.

Why did you do that?

That's because I like you.

I couldn't leave you behind.

I had to save...

Traitor, how dare you betray me.

From now on, I'll no longer be your puppet.

Xiaoqian.

As the sword and heart unite as one

powers from all directions combine.

Nerd, I told you not to run around.

Let's flee before it's too late.

We need to bring Yan Chixia along.

Wretched demon hunter

you ruined my plan again.

Cut the crap.

Old witch, I'll eliminate you today.

Burial in a sea of blood.

The power of the infinite universe.

The riotous revelry of the demons.

The sword returns to infinity.

Old witch, your 1,000-year-old spell is broken.

You won't be able to hurt anyone again.

Wretched demon hunter

I won't let you get away with this.

Go and tell Hades that.

I'll be reborn after 100 years

and I'll hunt you down until eternity.

Xiaoqian...

Xiaoqian...

Xiaoqian, are you all right?

Are you hurt? Where's the old witch?

Did she hurt you?

We're safe here.

I'm glad that you're all right.

That's all that matters.

Where are we?

My father

was a top official with a lot of authority.

As a result, he offended many people.

One day

his enemy came to our house.

There were over 120 people in our family

and all of us were killed.

Subsequently, Granny took my corpse away

and turned me into a demon.

I didn't expect you

to have had such a rough life.

It's all right, Xiaoqian.

I'll never let you suffer again

or force you to do things against your will.

I'll take you away when it's dawn.

It's a huge world out there.

I'm sure there'll be a place for us.

Say no more.

You'll leave when it's dawn

and we'll never meet again.

Why, Xiaoqian?

Are you still afraid of that old witch? I...

He's coming.

- Who's coming? - He's coming to get me.

- Who's coming? - Leave now.

Xiaoqian...

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian...

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

Ning Caichen.

Xiaoqian.

Stay where you are.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

- Ning Caichen. - Xiaoqian.

Ning Caichen, please leave.

Don't come and look for me again.

Leave. Just leave.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian, where are you?

Xiaoqian...

Xiaoqian...

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian...

Nerd, are you dying to meet your maker?

Please save Xiaoqian. I beg of you.

Can you stop it? I'm a demon hunter.

And you're expecting me to save a demon?

Xiaoqian might be a demon

but she's kinder than many people.

It's not fair if she can't be spared.

Say no more. So what if it's not fair?

With 10,000 years of cultivated strength

Black Mountain Demon is way more powerful

than that transsexual old witch.

I beg of you.

You're the only one who can save her now.

Ordinary people won't have access to

the Black Mountain where that demon resides.

You've to be dead before you can go there.

Fine, I'll kill myself then.

Aren't you afraid of dying?

I'd gladly lay down my life to save Xiaoqian.

Nerd, the world can be merciless.

There are many things beyond your control.

I'm seeking refuge in Lanruo Temple

because I've realised this truth in life.

I'm escaping from reality for as long as I can.

Are you going to escape from reality forever?

An escapist is no different from a dead man.

What are you doing?

I can't deal with Black Mountain Demon alone.

So, you're willing to help?

You're really going to help Xiaoqian?

I'm really unlucky to have met you.

This is great.

This is going to be an extremely risky trip.

Let me ask you one last time.

Are you sure you want to proceed?

Yes. I must save Xiaoqian.

This sword

was handed down to me by my mentor.

I'll lend it to you.

It'll help you at the critical moment.

I've some friends over there.

They'll take you to the Black Mountain.

Keep in mind that no matter what happens

you must come back before dawn.

Otherwise, you'll be trapped there forever.

There's no turning back on this journey.

Soar to the clouds, cross the treacherous river

take half a step more and fend for yourself.

Harness the power of the infinite universe.

The atmosphere creates manifestations.

Open the door of karma.

Spirits will lead the way.

There are no doors in Hell.

Shapeless and faceless

we are all constrained by our karma.

Hello.

May I know how I should get to Black Mountain?

Come on board.

May I know...

Why are you going to Black Mountain, young man?

I'm going to save Xiaoqian.

She's been captured by Black Mountain Demon.

Do you know what kind of place that is?

No matter what kind of place it is

I've to find her.

This is interesting...

Take this.

You want to find Xiaoqian? Let's go.

Over here...

Come over. I'm here.

I'm here.

From now on, you're on your own.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian. Is it you, Xiaoqian?

Ning Caichen, I'm here.

Xiaoqian? Xiaoqian.

- Ning Caichen... - Xiaoqian.

- I'm here. - I'm here.

Xiaoqian.

Ning Caichen.

Xiaoqian, I'm coming.

- Ning Caichen. - Ning Caichen.

Ning Caichen.

- I'm here. - I'm here.

- Why are you here? - I'm here to save you.

Do you know what place this is?

Are you dying to meet your maker?

I won't leave you behind.

I won't be able to leave. You should leave now.

Otherwise, it'll be too late when he gets here.

Nerd, leave now

or you'll be stuck in that realm forever.

I'll never leave you behind.

Nie Xiaoqian.

- He's here. - Let's go.

Nie Xiaoqian...

- Shuangshuang. - You...

Leave now.

Shuangshuang.

Leave now.

- Let's go. - Shuangshuang.

Rascal, catch this.

- Shuangshuang. - Leave now.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

- What took you so long? - I...

I sense the presence of a powerful demon.

Its aura extends over 400 kilometres.

Nie Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

Nie Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

Nie Xiaoqian.

Why are you still standing here? Run.

Run.

Yan Chixia.

Yan Chixia.

Black Mountain Demon

come after me if you dare.

Millions of swords.

What took you so long?

I'm sorry. I was delayed on my way here.

How did you antagonise

such a huge demon?

It's a long story. Let's get to work first.

All right.

Watch out.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

Watch out.

Xiaoqian. Xiaoqian, are you all right?

Xiaoqian.

It's impossible for us to escape from

this Demon Imprisoning Formation.

Let's go.

Listen, I'll launch the main attack

and you'll assist me.

I'll assist you?

He's coming.

What are you doing? Attack him.

All right...

The five elements manifest the aura.

The Great One metes out punishment.

Wind, thunder and earthquake, show your powers.

Hey, your tactic isn't working.

What do you know? I'm just assisting you.

What should we do now?

This isn't going to work.

With the Black Mountain as his foundation

and the aggrieved energies of 100,000 souls

this demon is fundamentally invincible.

What should we do then?

We've to enter his body

to destroy his primordial spirit.

Shield me while I enter his body.

Why are the two of you still here?

There's no exit over there.

Are you done?

My sword can't break his primordial spirit.

Figure something out.

Nerd, use the Spell of Exorcism.

Spell of Exorcism?

How do I use the spell?

- Throw the book at the demon. - All right.

Ning Caichen.

I'm reaching my breaking point.

Xiaoqian.

No. Your soul will be destroyed.

Hurry.

No. Xiaoqian, no.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

The power of the infinite universe.

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

What's that?

Black Mountain Demon had killed many people.

Now, the Demon Wheel has been activated.

Demons who enter this wheel

will likely be reincarnated as human beings.

- Xiaoqian. - Ning Caichen.

Xiaoqian!

Ning Caichen!

No.

Don't go, Xiaoqian.

Don't go, Xiaoqian. Don't leave me.

Let go of her.

Her soul is about to vanish.

You've to let her enter the Demon Wheel

so that she'll have a chance to live again.

- Otherwise, she'll never be reborn. - No.

- Let go of her. - No.

No.

I still didn't get your name.

My name is Nie Xiaoqian.

Nie Xiaoqian?

You're messing up my clothes.

You're willing to let me leave?

You'll be a goner when Yan Chixia gets here.

I like you. I couldn't leave you behind.

I had to save...

Xiaoqian.

Xiaoqian.

- Xiaoqian. - Ning Caichen.

Xiaoqian...

Xiaoqian!

Xiaoqian!

Yan Chixia.

Will I never be able to see Xiaoqian again?

If she's still a demon

what can you do even if you see her again?

Do you think I'll be able to meet her

among a sea of people many years later?

I wonder if I'll still be able to

have a transient relationship with her by then.

I hope that the world

won't be so cold and cruel by that time.

Yan Chixia, thanks for toughing it out with me.

Why don't you stay for a few more days?

We've developed a good rapport, which is rare.

Why must you leave so soon?

I can't stay.

I've to take the imperial exam in the capital.

In a world like this

what's the point of academic qualifications?

I'd rather be a dog in peaceful times

than a human being in troubled times.

Why don't you stay and help me catch demons?

It's a more carefree life.

It's impossible to catch all demons.

I'd rather focus on passing the imperial exam

so that I can become a good official
