Why I bought this and what it paid for
it, I'm taking the fee.

Now after years of dreaming, he's
turning his hobby into a business.

By opening his very own vintage and
collectible shop.

Oh, now it feels real.

So with the help of lifelong friend and
assistant Bev.

He's finally parting with some of his
collection.

I'm really attached to it. And hitting
the road.

God, we look like swingers.

In search of hidden treasures to stock
the shop.

A shopkeeper's work is never done, and I
never thought I'd say that out loud.

Since opening Vintage Vegas, Johnny has
been getting to grips with the highs and

lows of life as a dealer.

We've run out of time to price things
and we've been selling stuff.

I've not kept up with the paperwork.

He's gaining a reputation for his quirky
standout pieces.

Keen to keep their customers happy,
Johnny and Bev are on the hunt to find

more unusual items.

Today they're heading for a well-known
auction house in Stockport.

Have you had a look at your lot?

One thing I saw, and it was this post
office bike.

Usually for me, I actually went online
and did my research.

Instead of just going with my gut
instinct.

And there's better ones, cheaper.

I'm trying to stay... Yeah, focused.

Focused on not just buying it because
it's cheap or not just buying it because

it's hurt. You know what I mean? I'm
just going to wander around, have a

look. There could be something
incredible.

Yeah.

Dad lived over 20 years ago.

Maxwell's holds monthly auctions,
showcasing hundreds of lots with a huge

variety of items.

It's known for its eclectic mix of
vintage pieces and household treasures.

I'm Tom Blackmore from Maxwell's
Auctioneers, and today we have an

Antiques and Collectibles auction.

My family's been in the auction business
for about 40 years now, and the advice I

would give to Johnny is pick a price and
stick to it. Don't go over.

Johnny must keep in mind that he's
buying for his business today.

But unusually for these two, it's Bev
who's already getting carried away.

What's that?

It's a gyro thing, isn't it, that you
fly?

Bev's already bought nine items in her
head, including a gyro thingy that

flies.

It doesn't even have blades on it.

I love it. Come on, get in.

Determined to stay on track, Johnny has
set himself a £400 budget for the day.

and waste no time in searching the lot
for those hidden treasures.

If Johnny follows his heart, it might be
better for us, but if he uses his head,

it might be better for his wallet.

I love this spaceship.

It's a bit of my youth.

It's always quite competitive, but not
on every lot, so if he finds something

that no one else likes, then he might be
in with a chance.

I'm going to have to pay for that.

It's probably toxic and all.

I'm definitely buying three, two, four.

something to smile about.

And could another toy also be coming
home with Johnny? This should be in an

adult shop, just from the description of

Bev to see if the damaged toy has

stretched Johnny's budget too far.

The next lot is the old post-office bike
that Johnny saw online and decided he

definitely would not be bidding on.

That's at 40 pounds in the room. And

At 45 then, we're on in July. We're

Royal Mail bikes were a staple on UK
streets for 120 years.

Since the 1970s, they were designed by
British manufacturer Pashley, until

being replaced by the van and parcel
trolley in 2014.

This one has certainly seen better days.

It's all competing, but I'm all good.

What was the one thing you said in the
van? Not buying the bike. Not buying

that bike. Not buying that bike.

So now you get an interesting lot of
bits and pieces.

Next up is an assortment of items
bundled together as a mixed lot, making

it difficult to know exactly what you're
buying.

out of the window.

A bell jar, a load of stained glass
windows, a sea queen bag with German Mao

on it for 55 quid. You should come
crazy.

He was going to leave the room every
time I go out. He'd just put his hands

up for stuff that he didn't even think
he wanted.

Several hours into the auction, and
finally it's the toy that Johnny's been

waiting for, Chief Smokey.

But

he's not the

only one who's after him.

At Maxwell's auction, Johnny Vegas has
found himself in a bidding war for a

vintage toy, Chief Smokey. And things
are heating up.

there's something in it.

After winning the bidding war, Johnny is
keen to find out if Chief Smokey is the

real deal.

At the end of an eventful day, it's time
to load up the lot.

But it looked like Johnny had bought
more than he bargained for.

something within a box and they're in

Dagfields with the latest haul from
Maxwell's Auction.

This silk and sequin tote bag is a great
find for Johnny.

Designed by Shanghai Tang, a high-end
fashion house based in Hong Kong, it's a

popular brand that holds its value.

Now it's time to reveal Johnny's best
find of the auction.

It's fully working.

It's got polystyrene, so it's not that
old.

No, but before you get into the edge,

This is a repop of the original 1960s.
I'm not liking you today.

Yeah. So how much would you put on it?

Me? I'd probably say about 35 to 40 on
him.

What's the news?

Oh, God.

That's 160.

OK. I'm going to put that one down as a
loss there.

Definitely.

Battery-operated cheese smoky is a 1990s
reproduction of the original 1960s

Japanese tin robot, produced by Yoshia.

The reproductions are made with plastic
elements, but have the same features as

the original, such as a smoking hat.

This will put a disappointing dent in
Johnny's potential profits.

I tell you what, I have got a storage
unit that is full, right, of mistakes.

And anybody in this trade that says they
haven't made a mistake or brought badly

at some point, they're not telling the
truth. With auctions, there can be good

places, but there can also be dangerous
places as well.

Knowledge is the key to everything and
that only comes with time. That's a

mistake that Johnny won't forget and
he'll learn from it.

Mr Chief, roll me up, support me like
you can.

With the shop open...

Johnny is back in selling mode and a
local taxidermist has come to make a

purchase. It's going to you and you know
what you're doing with it. Yeah,

absolutely, I'll treat it well.

Being an expert on bones, there's a
chance Johnny could make another sale.

I thought you'd be right over there for
the furry remains.

Not in that metabolite little thing
they've made out of squirrel bones. Oh

my God, yeah.

The markets I do, the alternative
markets, a lot of people do stuff like

that. Do they?

Yeah. And it's weird because they'll go
for that and then they'll look at my

stuff that's real bone and just go,
whoa, no, thank you, you know, walk

straight past.

So, do you mind me asking, is that
chicken bone or is it just me? Is it

totally fabricated?

Um, that's totally fabricated. Is it?

It's probably a plastic or paper mache.

I'm ashamed to tell you what I paid, but
two of us got into a bidding war and I

found out then that it's not of the 56.

I can promise you, you're more than
travelling my money.

With a loss of £120, this has been an
expensive lesson for Johnny.

That was never going to see its money.

But it's found a new home.

When it comes to trying this out as a
business, I'm not doing great.

Not on that buy.

So there's got to be a sort of, I've got
to be a bit more efficient.

After a disappointing outcome from the
auction, Johnny and Bev are determined

to turn things around and hit the road
on another buying trip.

This is the one where the wheels could
come off.

They are returning to Collingworth Mills
in West Yorkshire, where Johnny is

hoping to make a more considered
approach to his buying.

God, it's a big place, wasn't it?

It's the ceramics I like, but I want
them cheap, and I want them in a bundle,

do you know what I mean? I want a lot of
them.

Vintage at the Mill is a carefully
curated furniture store, showcasing a

blend of rare vintage pieces and retro
decor.

Meeting Johnny today is owner Sean
Poole, who's been working in the trade

for the past 30 years.

I specialise in mid-century, 1960s,
1970s furniture.

Small bits, lamps, lighting, etc.

Right, come on.

Back at the cul-verse of beautiful
commerce.

There's always a deal to be had.

There's always a collective and
everything.

Advice I'd give to Johnny is a new
dealer.

When you're opening your new shop, do it
with your heart. The shop is the main

thing. The stock will come and go.
That's what we did here, do it with love

and something to have a vision.

I'm seeing European, West German
ceramics.

I'm seeing lava stuff, I'm seeing
freestanding lamps.

Confronted with a room full of his
favourite styles, this could test

Johnny's self-restraint.

It's another one there. This could be
dangerous.

And it's not long before he spots the
third item of interest.

I've got to ask him about that because
I've got some suspicion.

And even in disrepair, that's not a
major fit.

I've got to know if the dangerous tiny
bit of knowledge I've got is from where

As a former ceramics student, this is
Johnny's area of expertise.

But will his knowledge lead him to a
bargain?

German ceramics?

Aesthetically, it's like nothing I would
ever make myself.

I treasure it.

I think it's going to be the biggest
trend waiting to happen. If I had a

warehouse, I would fill it with this
stuff.

It's not even a price you quibble over.

Somebody might look at it and go, it's a
car boot sale. They've not even finished

it properly. And you go, get out.

That is probably the nicest ceramic item
I've held in years.

I'd put my ashes in this.

Ceramics, I'm just... I trained as a
potter and I'm overjoyed.

Some people put a shell to their ear and
they can hear the sea.

I just put it in my neck of a cradle
like that.

I can very faintly hear my dad say,
you're not a massive disappointment to

me.

He did a trip over to Ireland, and he
found that in the back corner of this

old antique shop in Ireland, covered in
dust.

This handcrafted leather kangaroo is
designed by British company Elmerca and

has been sold at luxury department
stores such as Liberties of London since

1927. They are still available today.

Like that?

You're going to make money on it. If you
do it up, you're going to make even more

money on it. Yeah.

Once he's had it repaired, Johnny could
have a potential money spinner on his

hands.

Next, Johnny turns his attention to what
he knows best.

Your thirst in ceramics is so up my
street, I feel like I've been married to

you for 30 years.

Made by a local artist, based five mile
away in Bingley.

Made with her love, and she's had them
displayed in her house for years.

This 1950s collection of mid-century
modern pieces was created by local

artist Joan Mitchell.

The rolled textured designs are inspired
by West German ceramics made in the same

period.

This is a different base built together,

I just saw, I had a mild panic attack
because I saw the price when you put it

down and I went... I could do that for
£120, that would be the best price on

that.

I really like it.

I just, and I'm not offending you, is
going...

I don't know what I can make back, even
on one.

Because once I've had a shade made...

As a dealer, I wouldn't pay £120 for it.

Finding these really decent people, I'm
still amazed that they're so forthcoming

with the knowledge, and I keep repeating
it, but I do think, I think if they see

that twinkle in your eye, that you get
what they get, stuff

passes on, and it's a pleasure.

arrived back at Dagfield with a haul

from Vintage at the Mill.

Well, I want to show them the comfort

bubble wrapped up when I put them in the

van.

They're nice.

They were dirty each.

That's got some nice edge to it. Brown
tall neck, 1959.

That's been hand-decorated,
hand-finished, thrown.

It's rustic. It's nice. It's lovely.

I think that could do really well, so I
think you should spot salt at 50.

The ceramics I bought there, I love.

I've always loved.

I studied ceramics. I have faith in it.
Mid-century.

I think it's got a real chance.

Johnny bought a job lot for £250.

But if he sells all the pieces, he could
make a profit of £50.

They're good buys.

I guarantee you. If they don't win the
shop, they'll go online.
