Original subtitles

[Jesse] Disobedience, you see, comes at a cost,

even for a great one like Moses.

What did he do?

[chuckles] That is a good question, Avva.

He did what every man must do when God calls him

to an impossible thing.

He had to decide who to fear

and who to serve.

Moses gathered his family and his brother Aaron, the Levite,

who God provided as a voice for him,

a help to his weakness of speech.

He asked himself the question again.

What is in my hand?

You could stay here and send Aaron in your stead,

anyone but yourself.

It is my name he called.

My past that waits for me there.

Take the family.

- Stay with your father. - No.

I will wait for you here.

I...

I do not know when or if I will return.

Then I will wait a long time.

[peaceful music]

Moses.

Yes.

[baby crying]

[baby crying]

[baby fussing]

I will name you Moses.

For I drew you from the water.

And you will be a son to me

and a prince.

[Jesse] And so Moses was raised in Pharaoh's house.

A son of Egypt.

He learned their ways and...

was honored as a prince,

given a place among them.

But God had not forgotten his people

and was preparing Moses for a greater purpose.

One that would take nearly 80 years to fulfill.

[tense music]

[whip cracks]

[somber music]

[tense music]

Why would he believe you are who you say?

Why would they not kill us right now?

I know this sword.

I know this man.

Moses.

Why have you returned to the people you betrayed?

Where is your father?

My father is dead.

Why did you come?

To speak the words of the Lord, the God of Israel.

Let my people go,

that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.

These are the words I am tasked to bring before you.

I do not know your God.

Why would I obey him?

You waste your time, Moses. You waste your life.

Remember our former days.

Heed my words.

Heed your words.

Heed your words?

The former days?

Let me tell you a story my father told me.

A Hebrew woman's son was raised

in generosity in this house.

My grandmother, placing him beside my father,

as a prince of Egypt.

This very sword given to him

by my family.

And he used it to betray us all

when he murdered a son of Egypt and fled into the sand,

never to be seen again... until now.

So...

Tell me Moses,

why would I listen to you?

Why should I not just strike you down with this very sword?

I was- I was- I was foolish then.

I used my own strength to do what I thought was just.

But now I come on behalf of a God who needs no sword,

whose wrath you have kindled

because you have made the lives of his people

bitter with slavery, and their cries have reached

the ears of the living God.

If you resist him,

you will suffer a fate worse than theirs.

Ooh!

[laughs]

What can your God do?

[Jesse] So Moses remembered the question

and the staff in his hand.

Moses...

I have gods of my own.

[whistles]

[hissing]

[hysterical laughter]

[dramatic music]

This is a sign to you.

The God of gods has done this.

Do not resist him.

Heed my words.

I am not your nephew.

I am Pharaoh.

I will never let your people go.

You tell that to your God.

All I see is a guilty old man playing with snakes and shadows.

- Then listen- - Moses!

- to the cry of your river.

This comes from the Nile, yes?

Yes, yes, yes, the very place my grandmother

drew you from slavery.

You call this river a god.

You worship it as the source of your life.

Watch...

what the Lord will make

of your gods.

[men coughing]

Get him out. Get him out!

[Jesse] The Lord did just as he had warned.

Turning the Nile River into blood before their eyes.

The water was spoiled throughout all the land,

and the people suffered.

Yet Pharaoh's heart was hardened,

and he turned his anger upon Israel.

Their burdens grew heavier, and the name of Moses

became a curse upon their lips.

Since you came, our burden has only grown.

Whips fall heavier.

My son was beaten to death

because you dared to speak to Pharaoh.

So the Lord sent them more signs,

each one a judgment against the gods of Egypt.

[Jesse] Frogs rose from the waters,

filling their streets and homes.

Gnats and flies covered their land.

Their livestock was struck with disease.

And even their bodies turned against them,

afflicted with painful boils.

Moses,

you have made my people suffer,

now yours will as well.

[coughing]

[Jesse] So God sent fire and ice from the heavens.

Locusts devoured what remained.

And a deep and oppressive darkness fell over the land.

With each sign, Pharaoh begged Moses for mercy,

and hardened his heart that would not relent.

Get out!

So, the Lord gave him over to his pride

and brought the final judgment upon Egypt.

You, Moses, you promised us deliverance.

Yet all we have is judgment!

Judgment is coming.

That much is true.

Tonight...

Each household is to take a lamb without blemish,

slaughter it at twilight, put some of the blood on doorposts

and lintel of your houses.

An angel of death will pass through the land

to strike down all the firstborn of Egypt.

When he sees the blood, he will pass over you.

You expect us to trust the blood of the lamb?

[yelling] I expect you to trust the God...

who sent me to you.

The blood is for you to remember

that life is bought with a price.

Redemption comes through sacrifice.

[dramatic music]

[screaming] Run!

My son!

[sobbing]

Sh-shh.

You did this.

No, your pride did this.

Your God does miracles.

You raise my boy, now.

You raise my boy!

Moses.

Moses wait!

Moses wait, wait.

If any part of you is still Egyptian...

and still my uncle...

just raise my boy, please.

We saved you from the river!

Raise my boy!

[Pharaoh] You raise him now!

Moses turn around and save my boy!

I am a messenger only and I have no such power.

[sobbing hysterically] Get out!

Take your people.

Never let me see your face again.

Get out!
