(suspenseful music) (singer vocalizing)

- [Col] We live on the most beautiful street

in the best part of town,

the kinda neighborhood

that gives people a serious case of real estate lust.

(anticipatory music) (vocalizing continues)

Claire says that some people pray someone

on the street will die,

just so a house will come up for sale.

Our house isn't the biggest.

That's Virginia's.

When we moved here, she was the first one to come over

to welcome us with a banana nut loaf.

It's her secret recipe.

Oh, here's the secret, housekeeper makes it.

Walker says we're one of Virginia's charity cases

because we have the smallest house on the street.

(music continues) (Foster meows)

Well, we're only here because the down payment

was a wedding present from my parents.

That's Eloise.

Sometimes I catch her looking at me

as if she's got some sort of x-ray vision,

and she's checking my eggs to see if I have any.

And are they fresh,

and how come I'm not pregnant yet at the advanced age of 34?

Claire understands.

There's something about me and Walker, she says.

We love each other in a way

that just doesn't really leave room for anyone else.

My life with Walker was perfect.

Then they built the house next door.

(suspenseful music)

I don't expect you to believe me.

You see, the house next door is haunted

in a unique and terrible way.

In another time, they would've burned the house,

plowed the charred ground and sowed it with salt.

(anticipatory music)

It won't be much longer now.

Our plan is in place.

We know what we have to do, what we must do.

We're not afraid of being caught.

We don't think we'll be alive long enough

for that to matter.

(eerie exhaling)

(door shuts)

- You're absolutely gonna hate this.

- Should I be waving my hands too?

- Oh, manicure.

I just heard it from Roger,

they're gonna build a house next door.

- Next door to whom? - To you.

- In the woods?

My woods?

- They're your woods no longer, my sweet.

It's just gonna be a big monster of a house.

We're all gonna be looking out our windows

and want to throw up.

- I'm gonna throw up right now, and kill Walker.

- And you're gonna have to stop walking

around stark naked at night.

Or, you know, put some curtains up.

Roger's gonna be so disappointed.

- You know, call me crazy, it feels like a violation.

It's always been this secret, peaceful place.

(Foster meows)

(bulldozer rumbling)

No.

You promised me.

You promised me no one

would ever wanna buy the lot next door.

"Land's too rocky, creek floods every spring."

- I know, I'll make it up to you,

I'll make it up to you.

I will give you a free foot massage

every morning for a year.

- [Col] That's not my foot!

(workers chattering)

Come on.

No one, no one is gonna prevent me

from enjoying my garden.

I'm gonna deadhead my roses and sit in my lawn chair.

- What?

What'd you say?

- How am I supposed to put my office in here with all this?

- I know.

Uh oh, here comes the enemy now.

- Hi. - Hey.

Nice to meet you.

- Hi, Buddy Harrelson.

This is my wife Pie, and our contractor, Tyler Hudd.

- Hi, how you doin'? - Pretty good.

Nice to meet ya.

I'm Walker Kennedy.

This is my wife, Col.

- [Pie and Buddy] Hi.

- Hi. - Sorry about the noise, guys.

We're gonna make your life hell for a few months.

- Yeah.

You know, I always said that somebody

should build on that lot.

- Oh, well, did you wanna see the plans?

At least you'll know - Yeah.

- what you'll be suffering for, right?

- Yeah, sure.

- Hey, Kim? - It's our architect.

Fantastic talent.

We're lucky, right sweetheart?

- Kim,

this is Walker and Col. - Hello.

- Hey.

- [Pie] Did you wanna do the honors?

- Sure.

(mysterious music)

- Oh, wow, that's spectacular.

- It's a work of genius.

- What do you think?

- It's magical.

(music continues)

(engine rumbling)

- Hey, you two!

How was the beach?

- Beachy (chuckles).

- Oh, they just finished it last week.

What do you think?

- Well, now we really do have

the smallest house on the street.

What do you think?

- I don't know.

I don't know what they were thinking.

- Hey.

Hey, Eloise, now it's a block party.

- Hey, Walker.

- [Walker] Wow, and here's even more neighbors.

- There's the happy couple - Come on, let's go.

- [Claire] and I happen to know all about them.

- Oh, you're gonna have a little friend.

Finally someone else on the street is pregnant.

- Oh, I'm willing.

She's the one who won't settle down.

- Well, according to Roger,

Pie's the one with all the money.

Daddy's money, and Daddy hates Buddy.

- Nothing wrong with Buddy that I can see.

- Well, Daddy thinks that Buddy isn't up to Pie's standards,

even though he's a lawyer

and his boss thinks he's brilliant,

he's going to be made partner,

that doesn't matter to daddy and Pie married Buddy

partly to get away from him.

- I'm going home.

It's tacky to stand around gossiping.

- Now that you've heard everything I have to say?

- It's not gossip if it's not about sex.

(mysterious music) (kids chattering)

(saw whirring) (Col gasps)

(tree thuds)

- Had to get rid of it.

The branch is casting a distracting pattern

of shadows on the living room wall.

- [Col] I think you might be a little bit obsessed.

- That makes two of us.

I've been watching you out here.

- Oh, you caught me.

Yeah, I promised myself when we moved here,

I wasn't gonna be one of these neighborhood garden ladies

that's just boring everyone with lectures on composting,

but here I am.

- I'm surprised to see you.

You're always at work.

- Oh, well, I moved my office into the house.

I've been meaning to tell you,

your house, it's beyond what I expected.

- I'm designing a new house.

I mean, if I get the gig, I'm meeting them,

the clients in an hour.

They're gonna think I'm a landscaper

if I show up lookin' like this.

I feel odd asking but the water is turned off here.

Do you mind if I...

- Oh, no, by all means.

Feel free to use our shower.

(door closes)

(pensive music)

Mine.

Little secret, I paint.

- Huh.

That was yours too, huh?

Wow.

- Interior design.

Pays the bills.

That's my gig.

- I knew you had an eye.

I mean, even before seeing this.

Yeah, when we met, I just had a sense

that you could see things the way I do.

Wow, look at these.

(chuckles) These are great.

- How did you become such a big deal architect?

- I don't know about big deal.

This is only my first project.

- You're kidding?

- Well, first realized project.

I was commissioned a few times before,

but they never got built.

- They fell through?

- Well, the first one, the client had a stroke

the day we started construction.

He died.

- Not such a good luck, huh?

- (chuckles) Didn't stop me.

I'm glad you like my house.

(engine rumbling)

(door slams)

- Col?

(anticipatory music) (shower water splashing)

Col?

(pensive music)

(anticipatory music) (singer vocalizing)

(eerie music)

- And you can't avoid it, you can't.

You move here and before you know it,

you're a member of the club.

You're trading stock tips.

Kim, I'm a collection of golf pants.

- Oo. - Yeah.

I'm in the advertising business.

I'm supposed to be cutting edge, playing the street.

I think the street has sucked the cool right outta me.

Should have warned Pie and Buddy.

- What are you doing home so early?

- Yes, which was why he caught me in the shower.

- Oh, you're not the first, my friend.

(Kim chuckles)

- Oh, come on.

I remember our marriage vows.

- Do ya? - Forsaking all others.

(Col chuckles) (Walker chuckles)

- Oh, okay, I think I'm gonna get outta here

before this gets too violent.

Thanks for the shower and the beer.

- Good luck with your clients.

- Thank you.

- So, you got yourself a new boyfriend?

- He needed a shower.

- Oh, oh, anytime.

Sure.

(phone ringing)

- [Col] Banana nut?

- My secret recipe.

What did you bring?

- [Col] Kim's phone.

The architect.

- Oh, no one's home.

Though the car is here.

Oh, well.

So much for welcoming gestures.

Generous of me considering how I feel about this place.

Like aliens drop it here to frighten the neighbors.

(handle rattles)

(eerie music) (dog shrieking)

- Hello?

Hello?

(air whooshing) (Col gasps)

Oh, I thought I heard something.

- Didn't mean to scare you.

- Oh, it's okay.

It's my fault.

I shouldn't be barging into people's houses.

- I won't mind.

Besides, it's my house.

(unsettling music) (singer vocalizing)

- It's like a little piece of heaven.

Kinda wanna lower your voice when you come in here.

- I spent hours figuring out

how the sun's ray would move across this room.

You see the angles of the walls

and the lines created from the glass and the ceiling?

You see that?

They all work together to trap the light.

- I wish I had that kind of passion.

- You do, maybe you just don't see it.

- Your phone.

You left it at my house.

- Hey, neighbor.

- Hi.

- Hi. - You almost unpacked?

- Yeah, just about.

Kim, you're still here.

You know, I think he's suffering from withdrawal

and he just can't stand to leave the house.

(phone ringing)

- Hey, we having a party? - Hey.

- Hey, Col.

How you doin'?

- I'm doing good.

How are you guys doin'?

- I think we have, what is it?

Six weeks to go.

Hey, Buddy, we better have our house warming party

soon before I burst.

- He's kicking.

- He? - Mm hm.

- Come on.

- God, he is gonna be such a good daddy.

Who knew?

When I met Buddy, the first thing he told me

was that he was gonna make partner before he was 30

and nothing was gonna get in the way of that.

Not marriage, not babies.

(dog whimpering)

Hey, Casey.

Come here, sweetie.

(Pie gasps)

- Oh, I thought I heard something before.

- Come say hi to Col.

I know, a puppy.

Buddy got him for me.

Do you wanna hold him?

- [Col] I'd love to.

- I know, a puppy.

I've got a baby on the way.

This house.

Tell me, how does a girl get this lucky?

- I don't know, but you certainly are.

(unsettling music)

(overlapping voices whispering)

(Foster meows) (pensive music)

(wind whistling)

(eerie exhaling)

(suspenseful music)

(pensive music)

(clock ticks)

(owl hooting) (music continues)

- What?

- Someone's gonna die.

- That's good.

- When you hear an owl at midnight

it means someone's gonna die.

(owl hooting)

(fabric tightening)

(birds chirping)

- [Pie] Casey!

Casey!

- Pie?

- [Pie] Yeah?

- [Col] What's goin' on?

Can't find him?

- No.

I was on the phone with a caterer for our party

and he was right up there.

- Well, check under the bed.

- [Pie] Okay.

- Okay. (Pie chuckles)

(Pie sobs) (pensive music)

- Oh, no!

- It's okay, it's okay.

- Do you believe in curses?

- The ones my grandmother told me about.

- Do you...

Do you think I'm being punished,

you know, for wanting this house?

This really, really big spit in your eye show place

just so I could shove it down Daddy's throat

for never liking Buddy?

I'm sorry.

I never get like that.

- He was a sweet puppy.

- I fought so hard with my father after my mom died.

- He said I was too young to get married,

and this house was like the beginning of everything.

You know, my life with Buddy and starting a family.

And now I don't know.

There's a feeling.

- Things are gonna work out for you.

I know it.

- Thank you for being next door.

- [Buddy] When she called me, she could barely talk.

- I don't know what could have done it, though.

- Like a fox, coyote maybe?

- If anything ever happened to her, she's my whole life.

- Of course, of course.

Thank you.

I'm so glad you guys like the house.

I know we're gonna be happy here.

I think the ceilings are 27 feet or something,

so my husband's wondering

who's gonna change the light bulbs.

- Well, I'm not usually fond of modern, but this is-

- Beautiful, just beautiful.

- [Roger] Thank you for boosting the property values.

- (gasps) Can you say that to my dad, please?

- Absolutely.

Sir, thank you for boosting the property values.

- (giggles) Thank you.

(glasses clinking)

- Have you met my boss?

- No, I haven't. - Col, Walker,

I'm so glad you could make it.

- Yeah, we wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

- You get prettier every day.

Thank you for having us.

- [Pie] I don't look fat, please?

- No, no.

- [Pie] Thank you.

Can you come meet my dad?

- Sure.

Yeah, yeah, I'll be back in a second.

- Okay.

- I need help, thank you so much.

(light music) (guests chattering)

(door opens)

(door closes)

- Kim.

What are you doin' out here?

(Kim sighs)

- There's somethin' wrong with the house.

- The house is amazing.

- I don't mean how it looks.

I don't know, it's...

Since it's been finished,

I feel like it's taken something from me.

- You're just tired.

You've been working too hard.

- Col, I can't draw anymore.

I feel like I've lost whatever it was that inspired me.

It's the house.

- No, that doesn't make sense.

- I know, there's somethin' else.

There's something in the house that I didn't put in there.

I can feel it.

It's like it's tellin' me something,

but I can't understand what it's saying.

- Kim,

the house is magical.

It's gonna bring out the best in people.

It's brought out the best in you.

- Look at them.

- Can you believe it? - I know.

- [Walker] Hello, ladies.

Did I mention how absolutely lovely y'all look this evening?

- Thanks, Walker.

- Oh, boy.

(light music)

- Let's go inside.

Everyone wants to tell you how brilliant you are.

- Some other time.

- Have you seen Buddy? - No.

- Have you seen my husband?

- No, no I haven't.

(pensive music)

- Buddy?

Buddy?

(Pie screams)

(upbeat music) (guests chattering)

- Looking for Walker?

- Yeah, you seen him?

- Nope.

(eerie music)

- Pie?

Help!

Someone help me!

Call 911! Help me!

Get an ambulance, someone!

- Pie?

- Oh, my baby!

- Pie, what happened?

- He pushed me, Buddy pushed me.

- [Pie's Father] It's gonna be all right.

Someone get an ambulance!

(eerie music)

(dispatcher chattering)

(Pie sobbing) (guests murmuring)

- Pie, Pie! - All right.

- How could you?

My little girl, Pie.

- Sweetie, look at me.

I don't know what happened.

I don't understand.

Look, I'm sorry.

- Get him outta here!

- Pie, I'm sorry!

(doors slamming) (dispatcher chattering)

(siren wailing)

- When she accused him of pushing her down the stairs,

he just stared at her.

- [Walker] Sweetie.

- He just stared at her.

He never denied it.

- It doesn't make any sense.

Why would he do that? (phone ringing)

Hey, Claire.

I'm sorry.

Hey. (door closes)

- Hey.

What were you thinking?

Last night, you and Kim, I saw you.

- He saw you.

- Sorry.

- I heard she lost the baby.

She's gonna be in the hospital for a couple days

and Buddy's gonna be charged with,

I don't know, trying to kill her.

I mean, it's so strange.

(door slams)

- [Kim] Hey.

- Hey.

- I came over to say goodbye.

I'm gonna leave for awhile.

- Where?

- Europe.

Can you believe it, an architect who's never been to Italy?

I hate having to leave it, you know, my house.

- You did hear what happened to Pie and Buddy, right?

- Yeah.

I left before, but anyway, I just came over to say

that it's been great getting to know you both

and I'll keep in touch.

- Yeah, take care. - You too, man.

Stay obsessed.

- I know why Kim's leaving.

He says ever since he finished the house,

it's done something to him.

He finished it and now he can't design anymore.

Last night, I was (sighs)...

- That's what I was talking to him about.

I don't know, I thought maybe

it was opening night jitters or...

It turns out he was really upset,

and so I was just kinda trying to console him.

- By getting really close?

- Claire said you saw us.

- Yeah, I did.

And as I was looking,

I saw you give him what appeared to be,

I don't know, lustful embrace.

Either that or the Heimlich maneuver.

I'm kidding.

I know my girl, and nothing will ever shake my faith in you.

So, I'm gonna get back to this.

- No.

- No? - No.

- Oh, but the Soviets, Berlin.

- [Col and Walker] No.

(pensive music)

(spade thudding)

(Pie sniffling) (singer vocalizing)

- I'm so sorry about your baby.

I'm so sorry.

- (sniffles) I really wish

that we could have become friends, you know?

we would've been if things had been different (sniffles).

You see, he changed after we moved in.

I used to know everything about him,

but after awhile I just couldn't read him anymore.

It just wasn't the same.

And he used to love me, and then he didn't.

And he really wanted this baby (sobs).

And then when he pushed me his,

his face, it just didn't look like him anymore.

I just saw...

- You saw what?

- There's something evil.

(Pie sobbing) (vocalizing continues)

(eerie exhaling)

(anticipatory music)

(moving truck beeping)

- [Col] Hi.

- Hello.

Oh, what gorgeous flowers.

- [Col] Oh, they're from my garden.

I live next door.

I'm Col Kennedy.

- Hi, I'm Anita Sheean.

- Virginia Guthrie.

It's banana nut.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

- I'll say, is this the friendliest street

in America or what?

Well, come on in.

Our place is a mess, but-

- Oh, no, no, no.

You, you've got enough to do.

We just wanted to say hello.

- Hey, hey, hey.

What's going on?

Don't we invite people inside anymore?

(Anita chuckles)

Hi, I'm Buck.

I'm the boyfriend.

- My husband of 24 years.

(Buck chuckles)

- Just trying to keep it fresh, you know?

Keep the love alive.

If you two ladies don't come inside,

you won't be invited to my famous 4th of July barbecue.

Come on in.

- (chuckles) He's serious.

Mm.

We couldn't believe there was such a fantastic house

for sale that we could move right into.

They even left us some of their furniture.

That's my son Toby.

- He looks just like you.

- (chuckles) He went to Iraq.

So young.

I was completely against it but Buck, I...

- Hey, get away from me Satan.

That's 300 calories a slice.

- You look like you can handle it.

- Well, nothin' personal, but I'm gonna pass.

- Buck's training for a marathon.

- Boston next spring. - Really?

Well, I chair a committee that's raising funds

for youth sports complex in an inner city neighborhood.

- Oh. - And sooner or later,

everyone in the neighborhood ends up

on one of Virginia's committees.

- Well, I would love to get involved.

Anything to do with kids right, honey?

- So, he's a health nut and she's what?

- Outgoing, warm and chipper, friendly.

- Oh, any kids?

- Yeah, one, serving in Iraq.

- Oh, huh.

- Okay, listen, I won't be late.

(Foster meows)

You noticed does Foster ever go next door anymore?

He used to love going to the woods.

- I haven't noticed.

- I won't be late. - All right.

(water splashing)

- We absolutely love the house.

I can't imagine ever leaving it.

What happened to the couple who built it?

They were only here a few weeks, right?

- They split up.

- (throat clears) Sort of.

- Hey, I heard there was a party in here.

- [Anita] Buck, have you met Eloise?

She lives across the street.

- House full of kids?

- I can't keep my hands off my husband.

- You're a shiny example of womanhood.

(Eloise laughs)

- Glass of wine, Buck?

- No, I pass.

I gave it up a year ago.

- Oh, what can I tempt you with?

- Well- (doorbell rings)

- Oh, pizza's here.

Tempt you with that (chuckles).

(Anita gasps)

You're home.

Buck, come and see!

Toby's home (laughing softly)!

- Toby's dead.

He's dead.

(pensive music) (air whooshing)

(phone ringing)

(phone beeps)

- Hello?

Yeah, sure, I'll be right over.

(phone beeps)

That was Anita Sheean.

- And she never told you that her son was dead?

- Babe, I just assumed he was alive.

I won't ever forget the way she screamed.

- Yeah.

I mean, I can't imagine losing a kid like that.

Just...

So, what did she want?

- She said she needed my help.

(door closes)

- Help!

Our furniture just, it just doesn't fit this house.

I need a professional.

You, if you have the time.

About the other night...

(chuckles) It is the strangest thing.

He looked just like Toby,

the way he always did.

Toby would stand in the doorway looking at me

with a smile on its face.

And I'd say, "Buck, he's home.

Toby's home."

I don't know if it's a trick of the light

or wishful thinking,

but maybe it's the antibiotics I'm taking.

I'm pretty embarrassed in front of everyone like that.

- No, I've got a really good feeling everyone understands.

(phone ringing)

- I'll just be right back.

(phone beeps)

Hello?

(dial tone humming) (Anita sighs)

(phone beeps)

So, what do you think?

My stuff (chuckles)?

- Well, it's eclectic.

- (chuckles) A polite way of saying it doesn't work.

- No, we're gonna make it work.

- Fantastic.

Okay, so this is not just neighborly.

I'm officially a client.

- I know the architect.

We're gonna make it work.

- Thank you.

(phone ringing)

(Anita sighs)

(phone beeps)

Hello?

(static crackling) (dial tone humming)

(phone beeps)

Static and then the line goes dead.

You know, it's been going on like this for days (sighs).

- Yeah, just pull it over.

And the next one. - Uh huh.

- Virginia, are you sure you're not a sailor?

- Well, it's kind like folding bedsheets.

- AT which she's an expert.

Hospital corners, the works.

- Step aside of you two.

Virginia is my new mate.

- Ah, careful Virginia or he'll have you swabbing the deck.

(group chuckling)

- She saw her son because she

was hallucinating on antibiotics?

- I wish I could hallucinate about both my kids,

except in my case I wouldn't see them.

- I hope you won't be saying that to Anita.

- I'm not that insensitive.

I'm not.

- Hey, Col, that's him right there.

I hear he's the best fertility doctor in the country.

- I rest my case.

- What?

- Never get lost.

You got one of these?

- Yeah, I've got one in my car.

- Yeah, they're everywhere.

Mystique is completely gone.

And it used to be, it was all about the moon and the stars.

- You can navigate that way?

- Sure.

I'll take you out sometime for a night sail.

- So Virginia, big wedding anniversary coming up.

20 years with Douglas.

Jeez.

So what are we gonna get her?

- Congressional medal?

(Claire scoffs)

- You know what she told me once?

She has never had sex with another man.

Only Douglas.

Hello, Ripley's Believe It or Not!

- Hey, Col?

Listen, I just wanted to say thanks

for helping Anita out with the decorating.

It's really nice that she's makin' some friends.

She had it pretty rough when Toby died, but she's strong.

I mean, I was the one who couldn't get up in the morning,

but I mean, we got through that.

We're stronger than ever now.

Which is why that thing, her losing it seems so strange.

Listen, say hello to Walker

and we should really do something sometime, the four of us,

if you don't mind hangin' out with the elderly.

- Okay.

- Okay.

(gentle music)

(phone ringing) (pensive music)

- Hello?

(static crackling)

- [Speaker] Help me!

(dial tone humming) (pensive music)

(phone beeps)

(music intensifies)

(phone ringing)

(phone beeps)

- Hello?

(static crackling)

Is there someone there?

(inhales sharply) Can you hear me?

(static crackling)

Why are you calling me (whimpers)?

Who is it?

- [Toby] Mom?

- Toby?

Is that you (sobs)?

(unsettling music)

(voices overlapping indistinctly)

- Don't hate me about the television.

I personally hate them in living rooms,

but no TV, no Buck (chuckles).

- Is he here?

I have the preliminary design for you.

- No, no.

He's giving Virginia a tennis lesson.

God, Col, you know you got the most beautiful roses.

- Ma'am, I'm all done here.

So here's your manual and the remote.

It's all pretty simple.

- [Anita] Okay, thank you.

(static crackling)

- It's chilly in here, huh?

(unsettling music)

(soldier speaking indistinctly)

(machine gun firing) (helicopter whirring)

- [Toby] Mom?

- It's Toby (gasping).

- [Toby] It's me, it's Toby.

It's Toby.

- All those phone calls, it was him.

He was trying to reach me (laughing).

Look, look, there he is.

- [Toby] (indistinct) I am taking fire,

repeat, I am taking fire.

(shots firing)

I've been hit!

I repeat, I have been hit.

I'm losing altitude, I'm going down!

- Don't!

Toby, don't!

- Mo, help me! - Please!

(Anita sobbing)

- Mom, help me!

(explosion booming)

- Toby!

(static crackling)

Toby, don't go (sobbing)!

No (sobbing)!

(eerie exhaling) (unsettling music)

- He was there.

It was Toby Sheean.

- [Walker] It was probably someone who looked like him.

- He was there in a helicopter in Iraq.

- It was a war movie.

- A war movie, war movie?

What war movie?

There's no war movies listed.

- There are 5,000 channels. - No war movies listed!

- The schedules change.

- He was trying to connect with his mother.

- Toby Sheean - I saw them!

- is declared dead by the military.

He is dead and buried.

- I don't care if he's dead, I saw him!

- Do you realize how crazy that sounds?

Hm?

- I saw him.

- Maybe you should spend a little time away from there.

You know, just give 'em some space.

- Yeah, 'cause if I go over there,

I'll end up as crazy as she is, huh?

(unsettling music)

- Virginia?

I don't know...

I don't know what to do.

(static crackling) (music continues)

(alcohol sloshing)

She's trying to find Toby on the TV.

She thinks she can save him.

- I thought you didn't drink?

(music continues) (crackling continues)

- Really happy you love the concept.

I'm gonna make sure I order these fabrics today.

- Thanks, Col.

- Excuse me.

Can I leave this with you?

It's for next door.

- Isn't anyone home? - No.

No one's answering.

- Sure, not a problem.

- Thank you. - Bye.

(keyboard keys clacking)

(crickets chirping) (dog barking)

(door opens)

(static crackling)

(door closes)

(unsettling music)

Anita?

- He's upstairs.

(button clicking) (music continues)

(eerie music) (eerie exhaling)

(Virginia panting)

- Oh my God (sobbing).

- Virginia?

- I'm going, I'm going.

(Virginia sobbing)

- [Col] What is wrong with you?

- [Virginia] I don't know, I don't know (sobbing).

- [Col] What have you done?

Virginia?

- Oh my God (sobs).

I swear if you say anything

about this to anybody, I'll kill you (sobs).

- [Buck] Anita!

No!

(dramatic music) (Col gasping)

- And the house next door, it's evil.

People move in that house,

and things happen to them.

It changes them.

- Anita was a disturbed woman.

I mean, Buck gave into what men gave into.

- I'm telling you that was not Virginia.

Buck might flirt, but that is as far as it goes.

He told me they had a terrible loss,

but they were on the right track.

Him and Anita, they were doing better.

- But that's it then.

I mean, they lost their son.

That's what changed them.

- How do you explain Buddy?

How do you explain what Buddy did to Pie?

Kim said there was something wrong with the house.

What else has to happen for you to believe me?

(soft anticipatory music)

- [Walker] Okay, so there's something wrong with the house.

Explain it to me.

What does it do?

How does it do it?

- It finds some weakness in us.

- Col, maybe those things were just waiting to happen.

Woulda happened anywhere.

And what about Virginia, hm?

She doesn't even live in that house.

- But she was there often enough to-

- To what? - To do something

she would never have done.

- Okay, so the house preys on people's weaknesses.

Why?

To corrupt, to destroy?

- That's what evil does.

- No.

You know, you get this from your Irish grandmother.

- You weren't there, you didn't see what I saw.

You think I wanna believe any of this?

- You know what I think would do us some good?

No neighbors.

(Col smirks)

(Col exclaiming) (water splashing)

(both panting) (seagull squawking)

(both laughing)

(Foster meows)

(seagulls squawking) (water splashing)

Somethin' I can see?

- When it's done.

- Wish we didn't have to go back.

It's good, huh?

You havin' a good time?

- I'm having a really good time.

- It's good to see you painting again.

(pensive music)

(music continues) (sign creaking)

(eerie exhaling)

- Col, why didn't you tell me we were going away?

I left messages at the house, on your cell.

I mean, what's goin' on?

- We went to the beach house.

- In Mongolia?

I mean, haven't you heard about Virginia?

She's gone.

Disappeared.

I called Douglas's office and they say

he's gone on some sort of leave of absence,

but they can't tell me where he's gone.

I mean, isn't that bizarre?

- I don't know, I guess.

- [Walker] Sweetie, I'll see you in a second.

- Okay, you know something.

What is it?

- Nothing, there's nothing to say.

- Nothing you're willing to say.

I mean, what is the big mystery?

- Claire, there's no big mystery.

- Who am I, a stranger?

I mean, we've been friends since

you moved into the neighborhood.

Friends do not have secrets.

- Leave it alone, Claire. - No.

Something happened to Virginia Guthrie,

and you know about it.

I'm worried sick and you won't tell me?

I don't know, Col.

I feel really let down by you.

(pensive music)

- [Kim] Ciao, bella.

- How long have you been back?

- Few days.

You look great.

How's the man?

- He's doin' good.

He's at the office.

We took some time off and so now he's payin' for it.

How was it?

- The best.

Yeah, I did the the whole tourist thing,

didn't leave one ancient stone unturned.

Hasn't sold yet?

- It's only been on the market a few weeks.

You're thinkin' Pie and Buddy.

It's another couple, the Sheean's.

(mysterious music)

What happened to the new house you were designing?

- Gave it up.

Execution sucked.

- It took it away from you.

- What? - Your inspiration.

You told me there was something wrong with the house.

You said there was something in there you hadn't put in.

What did you mean?

- Let's find out.

(anticipatory music)

What's the matter?

You scared?

- No.

(music continues)

(keypad beeping)

- You know the code.

- It's my own code I put into the system.

This will always be my house, no matter who owns it.

- Col?

(anticipatory music)

Col?

(music continues)

- So, what is it about the house?

Well, we built it over an old Indian burial ground

and the spirits of the dead are angry?

- A woman died in this house a few weeks ago.

Walker said she was disturbed, but she wasn't.

Not until she moved in here.

Two couples have lived in this house.

This house has destroyed everything they loved.

What happened to your other commission?

- A gallery for a photographer.

She had a freak accident.

A light exploded.

Tore her eyes up.

(chuckles) A blind photographer.

(pensive music)

If the house destroys what you love,

what would it destroy in you?

(overlapping voices whispering)

(music continues)

(owl hooting)

I keep trying, trying to get it back.

What I had, who I was.

I thought if I came back here...

- You're back.

You came back,

to me.

(eerie music)

(overlapping voices whispering)

(pensive music)

(Kim gasps)

(Col moans)

(door clicks)

(overlapping voices whispering)

(knife clinks)

(Col panting) (dramatic music)

No, no.

(punches thudding)

- [Walker] Hey, hey!

(Col grunting)

(knife clatters)

(kicks thudding) (both grunting)

(dramatic music)

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

No, it's me!

It's me!

It's me!

Walker, it's me!

(sullen music)

(knife clinks)

(gentle music)

- I'm so, so sorry.

When I saw you with him,

I heard a roaring in my ears and I wanted to kill you.

- I didn't want him, I never wanted him.

- No, don't, don't.

Yeah.

I...

You're hurt.

(Walker sniffles)

I did that to you.

- If I hurt you, it would've destroyed me.

I (sighs)...

(sniffles) I love you.

I...

You're my life.

(Col sobbing)

(pensive music)

(voices speaking indistinctly)

- [Col] We have to tell someone.

We can't sit around and watch another family move in there.

- I'll tell you what we do.

We get the hell away from that house.

- Sell our house, cut and run?

- It's a plan.

- I have to tell Claire and Eloise.

- That'll go over well.

You gonna tell 'em about Kim?

- I never wanna talk about him or see him ever again.

- I'm only here out of respect

for the friendship we once had.

- You want me to tell you what I know?

- Are we getting to Virginia?

I mean, give me some credit for sensitivity and discretion.

Do you think I'll go blabbing it all over town?

- I'm telling you, stay away from that house.

- Did something happened to you there?

- Don't you get it?

Good people move in there,

and then they change.

People die.

- I have no idea who you are anymore.

- I remember when you first moved here,

and we met and I knew we'd be friends,

and we have been, but I'm afraid for you, Col.

(engine rumbling)

(unsettling music)

(Belinda laughing) (singer vocalizing)

(music continues) (vocalizing continues)

- [Walker] What are you doing?

- We have new neighbors.

- [Walker] I know you're not going over there.

- I'm bringing over the banana nut cake.

Virginia's MIA, and my usual flowers.

- And say what?

"Oh, nice curtains and by the way,

your house will destroy you?"

You do that, they're gonna show you the door

and call the cops.

- They have a child.

I'm not gonna sit back and watch what could happen.

- Don't go over there.

- Walker, this is a child.

- There's nothing you can do.

- You know what I think about

every time I look out our windows?

I'm not worth a whole lot.

I don't do anything for anyone.

You and I don't fight for anything.

- This isn't our fight.

- I'm gonna make it our fight.

(door opens)

(door closes)

- Oh, they're gorgeous.

What a welcome.

- Susannah wasn't sure about this street.

Didn't I tell you this house was the best?

- Well, you were thinking property values.

- Oh, come on Susie, I did my research.

This street has the best neighbors.

- Mm, who's the cake for?

- Well, I was gonna put your name on it,

but I wasn't sure what it was.

- My name is Belinda Greene, Greene spelt with an E.

- I'm Col, without an E.

- You want a piece of cake, sweetheart?

- What's in it?

- Lindy, that's not exactly polite.

- Thanks, Daddy.

- It's just bananas and nuts.

Tastes a lot better than it looks.

- Well, what happened to the previous owners?

They bought and sold within a couple of months.

- He was transferred.

- I'll get it.

(doorbell rings)

- You wanna see my room?

- So this is your new room?

- Yep. - What do you think?

- I think it needs a makeover.

- I think you're a girl after my own heart.

- It's been the worst move.

House is the biggest mess you ever saw.

- Sorry, I take the prize.

16 years and my house is still

the biggest mess you've ever seen.

(Susannah chuckles)

- She's not kidding.

- Well, there she is.

I was just telling Susannah and Norman, you know,

where to shop, where to eat, who to avoid.

- Uh huh.

(soft music)

- These are lovely people.

Roger checked.

He's vice president at City College

and she was head

of a very prestigious girls school near Boston.

They are an asset to the street.

And if you say anything to them about this house being evil,

(scoffs) I swear, I will tell everyone

you are a sick, pathetic woman.

- I put secret messages in their banana nut loaf.

Shh.

(Claire sighs)

- [Susannah] We just love the house.

- [Norman] Stunning architecture.

- When I first saw it,

I told the architect I thought it would

bring out the best in people.

- Well, we just can't wait to entertain.

- Daddy, can I go? - Lindy, Daddy's speaking.

In fact, you are both invited to our open house in two weeks

and we have to make a good impression on the neighbors.

- Mommy?

- So, that's quite a view of our house.

I mean (chuckles), I can see right inside.

Susie, maybe you should have thought of blinds.

- I'll take you, darling.

- The washroom's right off the kitchen.

- She can wait.

Not too cooked for me, Walker.

I like my steak blue.

- Daddy, it hurts.

- What did I tell you about drinking so much soda?

Great.

Can we get something here, please?

- It's okay, it's all right.

You're okay, honey.

No big deal.

It's all right.

Come on. - You okay?

- Come on.

(unsettling music)

(keypad beeping)

(Susannah gasps)

- What did you do?

- It's complicated.

- Read the manual.

(music continues)

They're not embossed, the invitation.

- I know.

- I wanted them embossed.

- Well, I'm sorry, Norman.

- You're sorry?

Well, how does that help?

A printed invitation, Susannah, is vulgar.

Embossed is code for you know how to behave appropriately.

You have refined manners.

You belong.

This, this is hopeless.

It's pathetic.

Well, it's too late.

Mail them.

(unsettling music)

(eerie exhaling)

(doorbell rings)

(door opens)

- Hey, what a nice surprise.

- Hi, I really want a princess room.

- Well, I heard you were a designer

and Belinda wants to know how much your fee is.

- My Grandma gave me a check for Christmas.

- Well, I got a feeling we might be able

to work something out so you can hold

onto your grandma's Christmas present, okay?

(unsettling music) (eerie vocalizing)

- [Norman] Susie?

Susie?

- [Col] You wanna get your mom?

- She's with my father.

- Well, okay.

I have designed a room that is beyond

what a princess would ever have.

I think you're gonna like it.

- [Norman] Don't you get it?

You don't understand.

What's wrong with this picture?

- They're all spices, Norman.

- What is wrong with this picture?

What is wrong?

Tell me, sister.

- Norman, if you please just tell me what I did wrong.

(Norman panting) (pensive music)

- Suppose I'm making a Tuscan bread salad.

I reach for the?

- Basil?

- Basil!

Find the basil, Susie.

- You would find the basal if it were next to the coriander,

you would find the coriander if it were next to the dill.

- Spices aren't in alphabetical order?

- Well, check that.

- I'm sorry, Norman.

I'm sorry.

(music continues)

- Lindy, are you okay?

- My name's Belinda.

- So, what did I miss?

- Mommy.

- [Col] Hi.

- Hi.

I was just wondering if it's not too much trouble...

- What is it?

- Well, I took Belinda to the doctor and it's nothing,

it's just a touch of the flu or something,

but could you take her for a couple of hours?

It's just, I have the invitations

and the boxes to do for the party, and...

- I'd love to have her over.

- Great.

You know, Norman is...

It's just lately...

(laughs nervously) Well, moving's very stressful, isn't it?

- Yeah.

- Oh, thank you.

I'll send her right over.

- Okay.

Would you like to do something else?

- [Belinda] What's that?

- A very powerful weapon.

It's just a stupid old knot.

- I don't know about that.

This came all the way from Ireland.

My grandma gave it to me.

Wards off evil spirits.

- Does it work?

- It's worked so far.

- [Walker] Your name is?

- Belinda. - Donna, Donna.

And I see you through the-

- Window. - Mm hm, mm hm.

Because you are my?

- Neighbor? - Yeah, that's right.

No, and I'll see you- - Later?

- Yeah, that's right.

Uh huh.

And you're dressed in? - Pink.

- That's right, so sweet. - Hello?

- And I think you- - Hi, Norman.

- Stink? - No, no, we were just-

- No, no.

I don't think (chuckles)...

- We'll bring her right over.

(phone beeps) (soft music)

(Col laughs)

Hey, here.

- But it's supposed to be for you.

- Well, I want you to have it.

- It's supposed to protect you.

You think something bad's gonna happen to me?

- Nope, I won't let it.

- I hope she wasn't too much trouble.

- No, not at all.

(eerie exhaling) (pensive music)

See you later, alligator.

(door closes)

(anticipatory music) (singer vocalizing)

Someone's gonna die.

- [Waiter] There you are, Sir.

- Is it all right?

- You've outdone yourself.

(doorbell rings)

Ladies, you look stunning.

Seems appropriate, doesn't it, Susie?

That our first guests are our neighbors.

- [Claire] Are we too early?

- Invitation said seven.

- Well, the house looks beautiful.

- Thank you.

- Hi.

- Welcome.

- Hi.

- This is awkward.

- [Waiter] Care for a drink?

- Thank you.

So, the kids?

- They want a dog.

- [Walker] Kids should have a dog.

(pensive music)

- Long Branch Road.

Can you believe it?

My Susie wanted to live on that street (chuckles).

I tell you, nothing's too good for this boy,

and this boy saw this house and he said, "That's for me.

That's for Norman Greene, Greene with an E."

- Norman.

- You really screwed up, didn't you?

And this is my big night.

My coming out.

And who shows up?

The freeloaders from next door?

What did you do, Susie?

Or more importantly, what didn't you do?

- That's enough, Norman.

- No, you don't know what I have to put up with

from a supposedly capable and intelligent woman.

Well, where did she go, Susie?

What have you done with her?

You forgot to mail the invitations, didn't you?

You stupid, stupid woman.

(Belinda whimpers) (urine splashing)

(eerie music)

- Can't leave 'em like that.

- What are you gonna do?

I mean, you can't call the police

and tell him that he's a bully and a control freak.

- The reeducation of Susie.

We're going to start here

and we're going to make our way through the entire house.

This house will be as perfect on the inside

as it is on the outside, hm?

- You know, and then you'll see.

You'll see. (Susannah whimpers)

(anticipatory music) (Belinda panting)

That with order comes control,

and step by step you master the chaos.

You subvert the forces that are keeping you down.

See, they tried to keep me down,

but I mastered the art of being Norman Greene.

And that's Green with an E!

(Susannah sobbing softly) (anticipatory music)

(Susannah whimpering)

Come.

What is wrong with this picture?

What is wrong?

Tell me, sister.

(owl hooting) (Belinda panting)

(doorbell ringing rapidly)

- It's Daddy!

He's hurting Mommy.

I wanna stay with you!

Please, can I stay with you?

- Keep her here.

- It's okay, baby girl.

(dramatic music)

- Are you trying to poison me, Susie?

- I don't see what...

No.

You put raw chicken breasts in the vegetable crisper.

(dramatic music)

- What is wrong with this picture?

What is wrong?

Tell me, Mister.

(dramatic music)

(shots firing)

(doorbell rings)

- How is she?

Does she know?

- We told her.

- Poor thing.

What's gonna happen to her?

- I don't know.

- We're gonna sell, Col.

First offer that we get.

I don't want to see that house ever again.

Things like this don't happen.

I mean, not to people like us.

Not in a place like this.

I'm sorry I said those things to you.

I don't have the equipment to deal with this.

(solemn music)

Get out, Col, please.

Get out before something terrible happens to you.

I can't lose you twice.

(pensive music)

- Col, we have visitors.

- There she is.

Col.

Oh, it's so good to see you.

This is Chrissie.

- Hi, I've heard so much about you.

- So, you guys been good?

- Peachy, yeah.

You know, except for the body count next door, right?

- Yeah, I heard.

That's pretty incredible (chuckles).

So listen, I have news.

I bought the house. - Yeah.

- If you want good real estate,

you gotta read the obits, right?

- Why?

- Because everything I am is in that house, Col.

I saw my opportunity, I had to take it.

Well, we're gonna head back.

Chrissie wants to do some measuring before we move in.

Great seeing you guys.

- It was a pleasure.

- You move in that house, it'll kill you.

- (chuckles) I'll see you inside, honey.

- Yeah.

- (smirks) Col, houses don't kill people.

People kill people.

- [Walker] You're the one who said

there was something wrong with it.

- I was blocked.

I needed somethin' to blame.

- Now?

You designing anymore?

- Oh, faster and better than ever.

I have clients lining up.

Look guys, I know terrible things

have happened in that house, but it's pure coincidence.

Really, I put this idea in your head

and you've made more of it than there really is.

- Kim, don't live in it.

Tear it down.

It's your first house.

There'll be others.

(pensive music)

- I didn't want to have to say this,

but what happened between us,

maybe if you guys worked harder on your marriage instead

of obsessing about my house.

- Whoa.

- No, frustrated woman next door, jealous husband.

They come up with this crazy stuff.

It all makes sense now.

(pensive music)

- So what do you think?

He doesn't believe it because it's his house?

- It's not the house, it's him.

His other projects, he has a client die from a stroke.

Another one goes blind.

It's everything he does.

- So he's evil?

- Maybe, or maybe he's being used

to create something evil.

I don't know.

- Then we can walk out that door and never come back.

- No, that's what cowards do.

- Col.

- Why do you think he came back?

Why do you think he came back?

- We threaten his house.

He wants to stop us.

We have to stop him first.

(pensive music)

Our plan is in place.

We know what we have to do, what we must do.

We're not afraid of being caught.

We don't think we'll be alive long

enough for that to matter.

(anticipatory music) (crickets chirping)

He programmed his code into the system

so we can get inside the house anytime he wanted.

(keypad beeping)

(lock clicks) (music continues)

We're here.

- Okay.

I should set the top for the lights

and we have 10 minutes to get out or we don't get out.

Get the main.

(eerie music) (burners hissing)

(pensive music) (eerie exhaling)

- [Kim] Col? (Col gasps)

(air whooshing) (music continues)

- What are you doin' here?

- I live here.

What about you?

- Can't seem to stay away from the place.

- Remember what you said?

This house will bring out the best in anyone.

- Yeah.

The things we think are secrets are, made us weak.

Don't know but maybe it's just something about this house.

It changes people.

Maybe it gives us courage.

Maybe it...

Maybe it...

(music continues)

(burners hissing)

- Gas.

(gun cocks)

- [Walker] Let her go!

(Col grunting)

- You think I'm gonna let you destroy my house?

(Col groans)

(dramatic music)

(explosion booming) (glass shattering)

(seagulls squawking) (water splashing)

- The way they reported it,

a gas leak was ignited

by a spark from the security system

when the house lights came on.

There was one fatality.

Ironically so they said,

it was the architect of a stunning home

that had recently attracted so much attention.

Not only for its daring design,

but for the series of bizarre

and tragic events that had plagued

the house since it was built.

Just as well, they added,

that the house burnt to the ground and can't be rebuilt.

We killed him.

- We didn't plan it that way.

- I thought we could beat it.

What if the house saw something in us

and knew it could push us that far?

- We did what we had to do.

- Walker says we had no choice.

The evil had to be driven out,

the ground charred, and sowed with salt.

We hadn't expected Kim to be there.

That's something we have to live with.

But at least now we know it ends here.

Don't go out too far.

(gentle music) (singer vocalizing)

(Col sighs)

- The thing with the site, I mean, it's ocean front.

Just look at the cliff.

- The house needs to be jaw dropping.

These are just so ordinary.

- Hold on a second.

(pensive music)

I got these plans from an architect I worked with once.

If you like it, I can build it.

- Wow.

- It's magical, like it's alive.

(eerie music) (voices overlapping)

(dramatic music)

(unsettling music) (singer vocalizing)

(music continues)

(mysterious music)

(light music)
