So far, they've explored a secret network

of medieval tunnels

beneath the English city of Nottingham,

where the spirits of former bandits are said to linger.

Wow!

The search for a ghostly highwayman's sword

led Phil deep into an ancient well, where he recovered

a centuries-old coin from the time of Robin Hood himself.

Oh, look! This coin is Robin Hood old.

Meanwhile, Heather encountered

strange, seemingly hostile paranormal activity...

Did you just throw that rock?

...that sent the team to Newstead Abbey.

I've had terrifying experiences here.

An ancient monastery in the heart of Sherwood Forest.

This is where the Black Friar has been sighted.

And the 800-year-old complex...

Right there, right there.

...more than lived up to its haunted reputation.

After Phil witnessed unexplained phenomena

deep within the so-called Devil's Wood...

Light! Light!

I just heard her say, "Phil."

...Heather received a cryptic message...

...before the EMF drone detected something shocking.

We are right in the middle of all of these.

The team are surrounded by strange anomalies.

Something's been rooting through here,

But unless that animal had a microwave attached to it,

there is no explanation for what we got on the EMF drone.

We had a very long and very strange night out here.

Yeah, I saw what looked like a mysterious light

over the forest, then heard a sound

that was like my name being called.

Yeah, and I got the words "go out" on my spirit box.

It seemed like something wanted to draw me into

the forest, too.

And then we were encircled by energy.

Hold up, what does that even mean?

Encircled by energy?

Well, we had these EMF spikes that surrounded us.

I think we really need to dig into this forest.

I think something special is going on here.

- Mm-hmm. - Amazing.

Before you guys go full tree hugger over there,

there is someone you urgently need to talk to back in town.

with the actual, honest to God,

Sheriff of Nottingham. - No way.

That's an actual person?

And wait, does that mean we're in trouble?

Yes, you're in trouble.

And actually, he's in trouble, too, because it turns out

his ancient office, which sits in the oldest prison in

Nottingham, is super haunted.

There are reports of shadow figures

and violent poltergeists. And guess what?

He wants you two to investigate.

- Amazing. - Truly.

And as Robin Hood himself would no doubt tell you,

the Sheriff of Nottingham is not someone to be kept waiting.

So I would get out of that forest and go meet him.

We'll fly as fast as an arrow.

From Sherwood Forest,

we head back to the city of Nottingham

to meet Robin Hood's legendary nemesis.

Well, his modern-day successor anyway, Zafran Khan.

When did the Sheriff of Nottingham start?

How many sheriffs have there been?

The Sheriff of Nottingham started in 1449.

I am roughly the 1300th sheriff of our city.

Wow.

The main primary role of the sheriff was to keep

the king's peace, to make sure nobody in Nottingham was trying

to overthrow the monarchy.

I thought his main role was catching Robin Hood.

That was also part of it, yes.

The responsibilities have changed, thankfully, now.

My role now is an ambassador to the city,

so I do everything ceremonial.

So you're a bit more popular than the sheriff in the time

of Robin Hood? - Yes, 100%.

And my understanding is there is a particular building

you want us to go take a look at.

Yes, the National Justice Museum,

the oldest prison in Nottingham,

and also my old office.

There's a lot of dark secrets there.

And some strange things have been reported over the years.

OK.

There's a couple of people waiting there to share

their stories with you.

And I'd love to hear what you find.

Legend has it that Robin Hood

was held captive inside this centuries-old prison.

Today, it no longer holds prisoners, instead standing as

a symbol of Nottingham's violent past.

We're meeting with its curator, Stephen Dennis,

and longtime guide, Claire Finn, who both claim

to have had disturbing encounters

inside these foreboding walls.

So I'm guessing there have been a lot of criminals

in and out of this place. - Mm-hmm.

Take us back to the beginning.

Well, you got to go back to the Middle Ages

for the very beginning in this building.

The deeper you go into the building,

the older it gets.

Once you get to the bottom,

you're at the oldest medieval sections

which are cut into the rock face.

The next layers up, you'll get to

the 17th and 18th centuries.

Above that, you got the courts--

the most modern part of the building really.

There's five levels altogether

all for different time periods.

And the lower you go, the deeper into the history

of Nottingham. - Yeah, that's right.

So, in medieval times,

what were the conditions of this prison like?

The jail was notorious for having

absolutely awful conditions.

You're just put in a communal cell, which is basically a pit,

full of other people, all hungry, all fighting over

a scrap of blanket, absolute squalor.

Disease was rife-- jail fever, they called it,

and if you tried to escape, you get in a fight,

they would remove you from the group and put you in

the oubliettes, which is a French word,

means "place to forget."

There was this bottle-shaped cave beneath the building,

designed for one person, who you could just drop down

the hole and forget.

And no one's gonna hear your screams down there.

That's absolutely horrific.

And overseeing all of those horrific conditions was

the Sheriff of Nottingham.

It was his responsibility, yeah.

The Sheriff of Nottingham was a complete nasty piece of work.

So if the Sheriff of Nottingham was involved

from the beginning, I'm guessing maybe

the Robin Hood story connects to this.

Yes, there's a very famous tale about him

being arrested by the sheriff and brought here as a prisoner.

The stories say that he was put in an oubliette

at the very bottom of the building.

But obviously no jail kept him locked up for long, did it?

- He did escape. - How did he get out?

Nottingham has cave systems.

- Oh, we've seen that. - Mmm.

And if you know the way into those caves,

you may have an access route out of the building.

So people would be imprisoned here-- would they be

penalized here? - They would be executed here.

In fact, ten men were executed directly behind you,

outside this building. - Right here?

Right on those steps.

Hanged.

What did they do with the bodies

after they hanged these prisoners?

They were buried in the jail, in the exercise yard.

So, with criminals, executions, torture,

this place has got to have some paranormal activity.

Yeah, so this has been going on for many, many years.

It's staff, it's public, who've all had

various horrible experiences.

We've had people who've been physically sick

in certain areas of the building.

People have witnessed dark shadow figures

coming towards them.

They've heard talkings and footsteps

when there's nobody there.

And I saw a figure in the exercise yard once.

So you're telling me both of you

think this place is haunted?

- Absolutely, yeah. - Oh yeah.

Are there notorious prisoners of the past that are believed

to still be here today?

So some believe that there is still a spirit of a man

called Thomas Gray.

He was a local killer to Nottingham.

He was actually the last man to be hanged here.

And he's also buried now in the exercise yard.

He's a very aggressive, very volatile spirit.

How does that manifest?

We've had members of the public who've gone down

into the dark cell.

Thomas Gray was locked up down there.

And there's no light in there at all.

It's complete isolation.

People will come out, and they've had scratches.

In fact, we've actually got a photograph that they believe

is Thomas Gray. - Ooh.

- Oh, right there. - Creepy.

Yeah, it's like he wants to be quite intimidating.

And why do they think it's Thomas Gray?

Because once he would have been found guilty, that area

there would have been used as a condemned cell,

where he would have waited for his execution.

What?

So his final moments alive would have been right there?

- Yeah. - Oh!

OK, that's a strange picture.

Do we have permission to investigate the building?

Absolutely.

Yeah, but please be really, really careful.

I truly believe there are some dangerous forces out here.

With centuries of horrific history stacked beneath us,

Phil and I decide to split up.

He'll begin in the exercise yard, the final resting place

of some of Nottingham's most notorious prisoners,

including murderer Thomas Gray, where shadow figures

are often sighted.

Meanwhile, I'll start in the 18th century courtroom,

where visitors report seeing

apparitions and feeling phantom touches.

So we're in the courtroom.

This is where these criminals would be judged,

where they would learn their fate.

You want to talk about a space that has

layers of people's pain,

this whole space feels so oppressive.

People report hearing things,

seeing things, shadow figures specifically,

and being physically touched.

I think I'm gonna do a call-and-response session in here.

sentenced sometimes to death.

And because people have seen shadow figures,

I mean, that's one of the things that people report hearing.

But my guess is...

The acoustics of this exercise yard are bizarre.

Sounds bouncing off the walls.

I'm putting it down to just the physical structure

and not a spiritual ghost.

What's interesting is, despite all those reports of

shadow figures, I'm not getting anything on the XLS.

But this REM Pod going off,

how many people were sentenced

to death right there?

I feel as though I need to go down to the cells where

they went directly after learning their life was over.

it feels like a completely different era of history.

they are incredibly heavy.

They were about to be executed.

These caves were hand-carved.

Just touching these chisel marks is like feeling history.

And just like what I saw under Ye Olde Salutation Inn.

I mean, this could be 800 years old.

Wow. You can see the chisel marks.

Yeah, or the scratch marks.

I mean, honestly, sounds a lot like it.

We've gone back to the oldest section of this prison

from the medieval period.

Potentially the time of Robin Hood.

Yeah, but that was also the time of the most cruelty.

Right, people getting tortured, executed.

Even someone in the oubliette.

Well, what do you want to do?

It definitely looks like it, that bottleneck shape.

Yeah, it looks like it was covered up, sealed sometime

probably in 1800.

Be dropped from up there, down here to be forgotten.

And remember, in the Ballad of Robin Hood, he was thrown

into the oubliette, and-- - He escaped.

Maybe through here.

This could be where that sound was coming from.

- Yeah. - Let's go.

Wow, it just keeps going and going.

Yeah, it's a dead end. It's a dead end.

Yeah, not getting to there.

But we've learned that most of these tunnels connect,

so who knows where it leads.

Definitely at one point, it led to freedom.

Did at least for Robin Hood.

Yeah, I've not seen any signs

of what could have made that noise.

Wait a second.

What was the last thing I wrote down?

So when I was at Newstead Abbey,

I got "go out" there.

And it seemed to lead me to the forest.

So think it's sending the same message?

Well, if you're escaping from prison, where do you hide out?

Well, it'd be Sherwood Forest.

Exactly.

It feels like we're being led there again and again.

Well, then, let's crawl our way out of here,

make our way there tomorrow. - All right.

I want to figure out who or what keeps telling us

to go out.

If Robin Hood or any of the outlaws from his day were

to get that message, it would definitely have meant returning

to the safety of Sherwood Forest.

So that's exactly where we're heading,

to meet with Pagan historian Ashley Mortimer.

I'm hoping he can help us understand why the forest keeps

drawing us back by explaining its spiritual story.

What do you know about the mystical practices

of Sherwood Forest?

For all of human history, there's been a spark of

Paganism in Sherwood Forest.

The forest harbored outlaws like Robin Hood,

but also it harbored people who were outcasts

and on the outskirts of society.

So that would be the archetypal character

of the witch. - Mm-hmm.

You know, the unpopular woman who everybody quietly went to

to get their medicine.

Here in Sherwood Forest, Pagans practiced rituals for

well over a thousand years.

That is going to leave a huge energetic imprint

on this space.

Yeah, that will indeed leave an imprint.

In two different locations in our investigations,

I got the words, "Go out."

And I wonder if that means go out to nature,

get back to the forest.

The forest is the energy magnet of this area.

It is the place where nature and humanity meet spirituality.

How does that manifest?

What does that look like or feel like?

As you make your way through the forest, then be aware of

your own senses.

Listen for what changes, what moves-- the birds,

the animals, and how they react and respond to you.

And how the trees react and respond to you.

Well, if we were to seek these energies out,

where exactly should we go?

You could try the Witches Bowl.

That's a spot where those rituals have been practiced

for thousands of years.

The Witches Bowl is surrounded by yew trees.

Some of these trees are 800 years old or more.

They hold the energetic imprint

of what's taken place around here.

And that record is there to be released and unlocked

by those who know how to ask. - Hmm.

It's got an air of...

darkness and could be magically dangerous.

If it wants you to leave, you're gonna have to listen

to your own senses and do so.

I think we need to head into the ancient part

of the power of this forest.

This is a location where, for who knows how long,

there have been Pagan rituals. - Powerful rituals.

OK, that was right as you were saying this forest is a place

of safety. - Yes.

As we know, when the stories go,

Sherwood Forest was the sanctuary.

It was where Robin Hood could find safety

from the Sheriff of Nottingham.

So often when we're doing these investigations,

it feels like...

there's something evil, something trying to do us harm.

I feel the exact opposite here.

Each location led us to here.

All of that evidence, all of that activity, all pointed us

to Sherwood Forest.

It feels like something was trying to bring us to safety.

Mm.

This is a place of peace.

A place of peace.

It's a heartening idea, particularly after all

the trauma and terror that my team uncovered

during their investigation into the haunted history

of Robin Hood.

While we may never know for certain whether Robin Hood

himself truly existed, we did find evidence of exactly

what he might have robbed from the rich.

Wow!

Testing confirmed that Phil's hunch was right.

The coin he recovered from the well under

the Ye Olde Salutation Inn is indeed a genuine silver

shortcross penny--

minted during the reign of Richard the Lionheart between

1189 and 1199,

this really could have been a coin that

Robin was, well, robbin'.

But my team didn't just find ancient history.

Were you sentenced right here?

They also captured potential evidence...

...of the paranormal.

While investigating Nottingham's oldest prison,

Heather left her XLS camera running in the courtroom.

And at exactly 11:43 PM, it recorded this.

Stranger still, the figure appeared at

the very same moment Heather's Tempest

produced the word "scratch."

Scratch? You're [bleep] kidding.

Look at that.

Which was also when Phil heard scratching sounds...

- ...in the dark cell. - That was wild.

Could all of this have been a message, or maybe a threat,

from the infamous ghost of murderer Thomas Gray?

But not everything in the investigation

remained unexplained. After detailed audio analysis...

Did you hear that?

...the mysterious voice Phil heard in the Devil's Wood

outside Newstead Abbey appeared to simply be the wind.

But Heather's recording from the dark heart of

Sherwood Forest, the so-called Witches Bowl,

was a very different story.

Immediately after Heather asked this question...

Did you want us to know that Sherwood Forest is

a safe place?

...her pendulum responded, "Yes," and her recorder also

captured this possible EVP.

She believes the word sanctuary can be heard.

Heather wonders if guardian spirits in Sherwood Forest were

somehow trying to protect them, in the same way they may have

done for Robin Hood and his merry men some 800 years ago.

And speaking of Robin, before my two outlaws left

Sherwood for good, they got up to one last bit of banditry.
