Long before I graced the pages of
Playboy magazine,

I had a modeling career of a different
type.

It was something I did when I wanted to.

Dancing was more important, and in the
last three years, I would say it became

a whole career of its own.

The field I like best is fashion.

I get the chance to portray myself in a
way that I don't in anything else.

I'm not sexy.

I'm sort of bold.

Turn away from me.

Turn away. That's... Yeah.

Boy.

Come on, move around now.

After hard days of work, I like to go
home and relax.

Just take my clothes off and start to
unwind.

There's a part of me that loves the
freedom of nudity.

I see nothing wrong with it. I mean, I
think my pictures in Playboy are

beautiful. There's nothing to be ashamed
of.

The human body can be gorgeous.

Artists have known and displayed that
for centuries.

I've been dancing since I was three
years old.

I owe that to my mother, whom I think is
still to this day a frustrated

performer.

My childhood was far from normal.

Instead of playing with my friends after
school, I went to dance class.

But I loved it.

My choreography, what I like to do, is
very attitude.

using the natural movements of the body
portrayed through dance.

And it's such a beautiful art.

A while ago, I met my producers, and we
started recording together.

It's really getting lost in the track
just a little bit. It's pretty good, but

it could be a little bit better.

We're going to take it up to the top,
and we'll punch you into that section.

Otherwise, you're doing great.

My producers, the Albert brothers, are
great to work with.

take the last of your palms and flap
your thighs and watch the sun

materialize

I'll never be totally fulfilled, but as
long as I can live my life and satisfy

every aspect of it, my career, my
personal, and my sexual life,

everything, then at least I'll be
content.

And if I'm able, when I'm much older, to
look back and say that I've lived my

life to the fullest, that everything I
reached for and attained was done well,

and the best that I could possibly do,
then I would be happy.

And that's nice.

That's what I want.

Vancouver to me is really like the
California of Canada because you have

the ocean, except we even have a little
bit more because we have the mountains.

I just think it's a beautiful city. It's
very, very pretty.

I do dream of living like a little
princess and having everything I want,

but to me that's a fantasy.

My biggest fantasy is to be a sex
symbol, a famous, famous sex symbol, not

just a little sex symbol.

That's just a fantasy.

I'm enjoying life right now because I'm
experiencing something that not very

many people are able to experience.

I love being around people, and I feel
being around people that I get in touch

with myself a lot more.

I love shopping. I love walking around
and watching people, and I enjoy it.

It's fun.

I don't have as much confidence as
feeling that I'm that beautiful.

I don't see myself.

But I guess we all see ourselves in a
different light.

I mean, you know, I get compliments,
lots of compliments from people. Oh,

you're so pretty and this and that.

You know, it's nice to be pretty, but
don't you like me too?

I've always worked in retail. I've
worked in retail since I was 17.

I was working in a leather store, Netto
Leathers, and I was a sales girl.

Would you like to try that on there?
Yes, I would.

Okay, that's a 910. That's your size. Do
you want to just step over to me? Okay.

I enjoyed that job very much. I thought
it was good for me because it makes

you... be able to communicate with
people much better and not be shy.

It's like a little training course.

And I was a good sales girl too, but an
honest one. And that's why I was good.

Really nice.

Just great.

I always wanted to own all the things in
the store.

I believe one day I will meet the right
man to make me happy

and for me to make him happy.

If a man treats me real nice, I'll get a
crush on him.

It's like being in high school, you
know, when you see someone and you've

got a crush on them. Well, I get them
every day.

There's somebody there for everybody.

Just to care about me.

Just love me.

I live in Salt Lake City.

My family moved there about four years
ago, and no, I am not a Mormon.

That's the first thing everybody asks
me. I've enjoyed living here. It's

become my favorite place.

Good.

Very nice.

Now, as long as I don't look down, I
won't be afraid, right?

Right.

You might want to go over to your right
a little bit. Doing fine.

I became interested in mountain climbing
when I moved to Utah simply because a

lot of my friends did it. And when I was
doing my shooting for the Playboy

pictorial, that gave me an opportunity
to pursue it even further because we

wanted to get some shots that showed
Utah as it is. And what better way than

to do a mountain climbing scene?

I'm going to keep your heels down.

Now this is beautiful.

After the pictorial, I've even pursued
it further, and the better I get, the

more exhilarating it becomes.

is a very fulfilling sport because when
you're down there and you set a goal for

yourself and you reach it, it's a
wonderful feeling.

That's better. Good.

You might survive.

Great. All right. I did it. That was
great. You can see miles and miles and

miles. They're not as scary as they
look.

After a long day of vigorous activity in
the mountains, there's nothing better

than coming home and taking a long hot
tub.

My family at first was a little shocked
about my decision to pose for Playboy,

but they have always trusted me to make
my own decisions, and I haven't

disappointed them yet. And I didn't this
time. They're quite proud of me now.

The first time I posed nude, of course,
I was a little nervous, as anyone would

be, I think.

After doing it a few times and seeing
that most of the people who work for

Playboy, it doesn't faze them. They've
seen it so many times that it's their

job, and they make you feel very
comfortable.

One of the things I like to do in the
wintertime on weekends is take a bunch

of friends up with some beer and go up
and go tubing in the mountains.

You don't have to have any experience.
You just go up and just kind of cut

loose.

It's a bomb.

We have a blast when we go up.

One of the nicest things about living in
the mountains is at the end of a long

day, a long cold day, is coming in and
snuggling up by the fire, especially

when you know how cold it is outside.

The warmth of the fire and the right
kind of music really makes me feel

romantic. It makes me want to cuddle
with someone.

I work out an awful lot. I play tennis
an awful lot. And I run along the lake.

It's absolutely beautiful. Everyone runs
along the lake.

And it's nice to see the water on one
side and to run through the city on the

other. It puts you right in the mood
just to run and run. Basically, that's

how I keep in shape.

I was modeling for Playboy Models, and I
had met my roommate.

Jill thought that I would be a very good
playmate. I thought I was just too

conservative. I couldn't perceive myself
in front of a camera and doing nids.

Jill showed me some of her pictures, and
I thought they were absolutely

beautiful. I thought, that's wonderful.

You can really show yourself and be that
beautiful.

So David Macy and I, he did my test
shooting.

I was impressed with the pictures
myself. I thought, boy, you really are

sexier than you thought.

It's different.

That's really different.

That's a little baggy for my desk. The
next day they called me and said,

listen, you're going to be a playmate.

I was extremely intimidated, but I was
excited also.

It opened myself an awful lot. Before, I
was embarrassed to see any pictures of

my body like that.

Why be modest if you have a beautiful
body?

There's nothing wrong with that. There's
nothing wrong with looking at someone's

beautiful body.

I think a sensuality is someone, how
they see themselves.

And I think if someone doesn't like
themselves, they can't be sensual. It's

a very personal feeling.

And when you don't have it, it's not
personal.

It's something that you see in someone
else.

It's just a whole aura that you have
about you and not what you feel about

yourself.

I'm flying. I love it.

It's pretty clear.

Oh, that's good.

The water's settled up.

For the strut to compress,

you want to come across this side.

Check the rudder.

Give it a good move there. It shouldn't
move too much.

That about completes the checkup.

Okay, let's fly. I started taking
lessons with Larry, who was with the

George Priest Aviation Service.

It is an escape for me. I just go up
there. You can let your spirit go when

you're flying in a small plane.

Concentrate on one thing, flying, and
that's it. All right.

I think someone listens to good music
and puts their headphones on. The only

one thing you have to concentrate on is
that music.

Same thing with flying.

Right now my goals are traveling,
starting back to school, finish my

psychology degree, and enjoying my young
life.

My final goals are to be happy. I don't
necessarily want children, but I'd like

to be married somewhere down the road. I
really probably will.

I think there's different types of love,
but I think love is hard to realize.

I don't know if I've experienced it
fully.

If I like the person, I try to relate to
him.

I try to stay away from him a little
bit. I find myself sometimes not doing

that, and I drive myself crazy when I do
that.

I want everything near me, everything I
want.

I'm Melinda Mays, and I live in Atlanta,
Georgia.

There are a few things about the Old
South that I really do like.

In Atlanta, the history plays a major
part of the city. Everything kind of

revolves around the Old South.

It's a wonderful city, and it wouldn't
be what it is without the past.

Nobody really lives in the past, but we
all remember the past.

I really do still consider my family a
big thing.

I think that's about the only thing I
would consider that's still traditional

in the modern South.

As far as that, I think that we're
moving right along with everyone else,

and the old things just seem to die
away.

I've always had a fantasy to drive a
race car.

This was my first time.

I wish I could have been better at it.

If you don't start things off perfect
the first time, but it was a lot of fun,

and I really did enjoy it.

What did I do wrong in turn seven?

You have a tendency to go to the gas and
turn at the same time, and unless the

front end is really planted, the front
end won't respond. The front end moves

over. You look pretty good everywhere
else. Let's go work on turn seven.

I don't know what it is about the speed
of it.

I don't know if it makes your adrenaline
start rushing or whatever, but it's kind

of like a natural high just being in a
car, driving it like that. I loved it,

every minute of it.

My body is very important to me.

I try to eat the right foods, love to
exercise.

If I can do anything to help myself look
better, I'm willing to try it.

As far as nudity is concerned, I see
nothing wrong with it if it's done

tastefully, and I feel that it can be
done very tastefully.

There are private moments that I
wouldn't want to share, but I'm young

and I have nothing to be ashamed of.

I feel like I'm a very physical person
with someone I really have a lot of

feelings for. I love to be touched, and
I love to touch also.

Sometimes I just like to sit back, kind
of dream, imagine what it would be like

if I were alive.

in the Old South, wearing the hoop
skirt, the dresses.

It seems very feminine.

Matter of fact, I feel very feminine in
my mini skirts too.

To me, Atlanta is a wonderful city. I
love the climate.

The people are very nice.

Southern hospitality, I guess you could
say. I don't think I'd want to live

anywhere else.

I feel I have very much in common with
Atlanta.

There's a part of me that's very much in
the old tradition, and then there's a

part that's very modern, just like
Atlanta is.

There's a club in Atlanta called the
Limelight.

To me, it's the best club in town.

They have a great dance floor and the
lighting.

The whole thing is just great.

It's really an unusual place that I
don't think most cities have.

It's fun.

sister. I also like rock and roll. I
like all kinds of music.

The limelight gives me an opportunity to
spend time with my friends.

Whether you go with your friends or not,
you can meet people and have a good

time.

There's something about dancing that
just lets you be yourself and get your

feelings out and act the way you want,
and it's a lot of fun to me.

In the old South, I would never have
been able to pose nude.

Of course, I wasn't Playboy then.

But things are different now.

I feel really lucky that I'm in the new
South and have the opportunity to work

for someone like Playboy. It's been a
very great opportunity for me.

My ambitions for the future are, first
of all, to enjoy my life no matter what

I'm doing. I don't think I would ever
let myself be in a situation where I

didn't enjoy anything.

In the next few years of my life, I
would really like to do a little

traveling and really try to find myself.

Of course I want friends and
relationships, but one day I really do

want to have a family. I'd love to get
married.

I don't think it'll be too soon before I
do that. It'll be a while before I

settle down.

My dad was in the military so I guess
you could call me a military brat.

I have three sisters and I'm used to
traveling all over the United States

with them.

My family never really settled down
until we got to Hawaii when I was 13

years old.

We spent about six years there and
that's where I really felt like I was at

home. It'll always be home to me even
though we moved to California when I was

a senior in high school.

When I moved to Los Angeles, the most
important thing to me was living

somewhere close to the ocean.

I love to sail, especially on HobieCats,
because it makes me feel so free, and it

really gets my blood pumping.

I'm a very competitive person, and I
love to race, but I do have to make sure

that someone else is on that Hobie with
me, because it gets pretty scary out

there in the ocean.

But I like to sail with this guy
anyways.

Sewing is one of the best things that I
could ever imagine doing.

But being out in the air and riding the
swell, the lip of the swell, and flying

off the lip, man, it's incredible.

During my senior year in high school, I
took one art class, and I really got

involved in it.

I did so well that I won an art
scholarship to Saddleback College.

which is in Irvine, about 50 miles from
L.A.

That art scholarship really brightened
up my life and helped to decide my

future plans, such as my studies at
Laguna Art School.

I love it there, and the teachers are
fantastic.

I want to show you a few little things
here on the board so that as we work,

you'll be able to see what it is that
I'm after for you.

Okay? So what we're going to do then,
we're going to think in terms of the

organic shapes that we see there, and
we're going to play it light against

dark. We're going to establish the more
geometric shapes, such as this.

And we can change them. We're not stuck
with the actuality of what we see. I

didn't care that much for school until I
discovered art.

It was the first time I felt that I had
any special talent.

By now I feel that I have enough talent
to have a real chance at a career in

commercial art.

And I'm very ambitious to succeed at it.

In the meantime, I've been modeling,
trying to get into acting and

commercials.

I think I'm doing pretty well right now
because I have the urge to get up and

go.

agency. I went there for one reason, to
get into the modeling agency.

I never, ever imagined doing the
centerfold of Playboy.

But when I went up there, they asked me,
would you like to test for Playmate?

And I said, can I think about this? I
don't know. I think my parents will kill

me.

That's it. Hold it.

Great. And here I am. the September
Playboy magazine, and I'm so excited,

proud of it.

Once you have signed your centerfold,
your confidence is so high, you become a

lot more mature.

You have so many responsibilities that
you have to mature, and you're

representing one of the best companies
in the world, and you have to be proud

of it, and you have to love it.

And I do.

I enjoyed posing as a playmate.

I was nervous at first, but everyone was
so nice and so relaxed about it that

after a while I became relaxed too.

Since I do study at Laguna, I end up
spending a lot of time down there.

Laguna is sort of an artist's heaven.
The beach is right there, so there's a

lot of outdoor activities going on.

And the town is filled with art
galleries.

Isn't that what you're making?

My little sister Paula, well, she's my
favorite friend and the best person in

the world. She and I hang out in Laguna
all the time. My sister loves her

photography as much as I love my art.

So we end up spending a lot of money on
art supplies than we do on clothes.

I like the big mug. These are $6.

Those are good.

This is nice.

We party together, we go to movies, but
mostly we attend all the art exhibits.

My favorite is the Sawdust Festival,
which is one of the best arts and crafts

fairs in the country.

It's a great place to make contact with
other artists and see what kind of work

they're doing.

Everybody's really friendly.

One of my biggest dreams is to be able
to use my artwork and combine it with

lasers.

And I've been working on creating a kind
of flash dance using lasers.

I'm very, very excited about it.

Just give me the chance to use the
lights, the strobes, the frog effects,

and the right piece of music, and I bet
you I can come up with something

outrageous.

I'm holding you so tight.

We've walked along St. Thomas Beach a
million times, hand

in hand.
