Ping Pong

This show is the selected drama by NRTA

in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the PRC,

and was funded under the 2019 Art Creation of Hubei.

Episode 39

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.

Song Min.

Have you lost it? What's wrong?

Here.

I was tortured by Brother Ke Nan.

Ye Zhen Xin is joining the second team as a coach.

Who told you that? Is it a reliable source?

I saw the contract at the office.

It's in black and white.

Well,

the captain is being treated differently.

Dare you bet with me?

The next captain

is Yu Ke Nan.

Let's bet hot pot.

Not necessarily.

I think Brother Tan is likely to be one, too.

That's impossible.

To be a captain, one has to win the three big games.

It's not likely to be him.

Brother Tan

has been doing very well this year.

He's the Asian Games champion.

And he's ranked no. 1 in the world.

He'll win the three big games sooner or later.

But

I hope Brother Ke Nan will become the captain.

I

really don't want to be his training partner anymore.

I'm going to eat now.

Go ahead.

You're here.

Brother Tan.

Do you have a minute?

Let's do some training.

You and Yu Ke Nan are alike indeed.

Both of you are good at using backhand techniques.

But when it comes to forehand ones,

you're not as skilled as him.

If you want to surpass him,

you have to master forehand techniques.

Brother Tan.

Do you need a training partner?

Work Hard, Build The Dream

Bro.

Regarding the selection of first team's captain,

what is your opinion?

Let me say a few words.

Yu Ke Nan is the recipient of Grand Slam.

His skills are the best in the world.

At the same time, he's experienced when it comes to competition.

In men's team events,

he's always been the most feared player in Japan and Korea.

All the kids in the second team see him as an idol.

In terms of capability,

Yu Ke Nan is the bellwether in the team.

And he's highly confident.

He does have the temperament of a leader.

It's just that the scandal

has yet to be resolved.

And it has great impact on him.

Yu Ke Nan has become famous.

And he's become influential

due to his great number of fans.

It's a double-edged sword.

He's reflected on the incident.

I watched him become who he is today.

He's indeed become more mature than ever.

Well,

I'd like to nominate a candidate.

Xu Tan.

We're all aware that,

during the Incheon Asian Games,

Xu Tan overcame the pressure at the critical moment.

He eventually turned the tables

and defeated the Korean team.

I realised that Xu Tan has

a strong sense of responsibility.

And I think such a sense of responsibility

makes him a more potential leader.

It's not enough to have a sense of responsibility.

When Liu Shi and others were doing training,

Xu Tan always came to help.

He understands tactics as well as me.

But until now, Xu Tan

has yet to win any world championship.

Mr Fu.

What do you think?

Just a few days ago, a relative said to me that

we need to stop winning ping-pong games.

If we keep doing so, no one would be interested in playing it.

Others might take that

as some light-hearted joke.

But it makes me

so heavy-hearted

that I have no idea how to interpret it.

People think that it takes us little effort to win a gold medal.

But in fact, we work our fingers to the bone for it.

So here's what I think.

The team captain we're looking for.

The internal and external pressure that he's going to deal with

will be more than the attention given to him.

What is a leader?

He's the spirit of a team.

It's very important to be highly capable.

But

I care more about his mental quality.

Therefore,

I find

Xu Tan more suitable.

After the research by the coaching team

and the synthesisation of your recent performance,

we decided to appoint Xu Tan

as the new team captain.

Xu Tan deserves to be the new captain.

He's full of persistence.

And you all should learn from him.

Xu Tan.

Work hard.

Be a role model.

All right, dismiss.

Brother Tan, congratulations.

Captain, we should celebrate it one of these days.

You won the bet.

Xu Tan, let's get on with the training.

Let's train.

Hot Pot

Here.

Congratulations on becoming our new captain.

Liu Shi.

Both of us

should join the WTTC.

We haven't had any match in a big game, right?

I need to play with the first chopper

of national ping-pong team.

What's the matter?

You're aware that I was back from the disaster area.

And I saw many things there.

Many people lost everything in the blink of an eye.

I then realised

that to live well

is already a blessing.

If I hadn't met Yuan Ran back then,

I would've put my health at risk

and joined the Suzhou WTTC

But now whenever I want to risk my life,

I'll think of Yuan Ran.

Since she's entrusted herself to me,

I'll work really hard not to let her lose.

I can't let her down.

What's with you?

I don't think I've ever thought about that.

I may be a good player.

But I'm definitely not a good boyfriend.

It's okay. I got you.

A sincere heart is everything.

Happy birthday!

Take a look at the cake I got for you.

Here.

Have a seat.

Go ahead and make a wish.

Xu Tan.

Let's break up.

What do you mean?

What happened to your leg?

It was raining on that day.

I fell down alone in the rain.

I wanted to tell you.

But I was afraid it'd affect your performance.

That's why I lied to you by saying that

I was on a business trip.

I'm sorry.

I'm not blaming you.

On the contrary,

I want to thank you.

You asked me

what I wanted to do

after graduation.

But I just muddled through.

Because I had no idea.

what I wanted.

I'm not like you.

You've been playing ping-pong since you're young.

And I'm just a normal girl.

I just did what I had to do. I went to school,

sat for exams,

attended university, and worked.

It seemed to be a smooth life.

But

no one has ever asked me

what I like.

After that,

I fell in love with you.

For a period of time,

my life was

all about you.

When you were upset,

I'd try to cheer you up.

When you were happy, I was happy.

You wanted to fly all over the world for competitions.

So I became your assistant.

In fact,

I wasn't kidding.

After that, you were getting busy.

And I didn't know

my place in your heart.

Xu Tan.

You've found your goal.

And you've been working hard.

I'm very happy for you.

But

I want to find my dream, too.

I can keep you company.

I can only

play the game by myself.

Everyone must choose their own path.

The

first choice I want to make

is

to leave you.

Xu Tan.

May you

have everything you wish for.

Please give me your blessing, too.

Nice shot!

2015, Qualification Tournament of Suzhou WTTC

Xu Tan vs Su Shun, 09-11

Yu Ke Nan vs Leng Yi, 09-07

Awesome!

Yu Ke Nan vs Leng Yi, 09-11

Su Shun vs Xu Tan, 11-05

Qualification Tournament of Suzhou 2015

Now, let me announce

the ranking of the first day of the qualification tournament.

Number one, Leng Yi.

Number two, Yu Ke Nan.

Number three, Su Shun.

Number four, Xu Tan.

Number five, Liu Shi.

Number six, Ma Chuan.

Number seven, Song Min.

Number eight, Wu Kai.

All right.

Prepare yourself for tomorrow's game.

Dismiss!

Here, apply it here.

I just gave it a careful thought.

Although you lost this game,

it's not entirely your fault.

It has to do with

this new plastic ball.

This ball comes with poor spin rate.

That's why you had to play more rounds.

Also, you started the game very powerful

so it's natural that you couldn't catch up after that.

It's great that we lost it.

Let's work on

allocating energy after this.

How do you feel? Is your shoulder okay?

Be gentle with it.

I wasn't even pressing on it.

How fragile you are.

Does it hurt a lot?

I'm lack of strength.

For now, let's deal with it like this.

If anything happens, come and see me at the clinic.

Slowly.

What's wrong?

My legs feel weak.

He's had a lumbar injury relapse during the game.

You'll apply for leave from Mr Qin.

Tell him that you can't play tomorrow's game.

I'm okay.

There's one more day left.

I'll hang in there.

You need to stop playing,

otherwise the consequences could be unimaginable.

How's the injury?

Today, I've submitted

the application form for retirement.

You've made up your mind?

I know my condition the best.

I've been in denial.

But

not just the China team,

there are fewer and fewer foreign choppers.

I'm not even qualified to be a training partner for top players.

It's time to leave.

And I even

fought with Yuan Ran over it.

And she cried.

I'm not playing for tomorrow's game.

Xu Tan.

Play well tomorrow.

Go for it. Make it to WTTC.

I'll go to Suzhou and cheer for you.

You're just going to give up?

Can you really bring yourself to do that?

Unity & Discipline

Stone, don't forget the tuina treatment tomorrow.

No, it's today.

It's already midnight.

Goodnight.

Ran Ran, do you think

I still have the chance to play the game?

It's getting late. And Liu Shi isn't here yet.

Yuan Ran.

What do you like about Liu Shi?

Then what do you like about Mr Qin?

He's a bit silly.

And stubborn.

But he's very adorable.

Likewise.

In fact, I'm aware that

he doesn't want to give up.

Yesterday, when he said he's not playing the game,

his eyes went red.

And he thought I didn't realise that.

When he's sad,

I feel upset.

I'm actually aware that

Stone cares about this tournament.

If it weren't for me,

he would've joined the game

with the lumbar injury.

But I'm really worried.

I'm worried he'll always regret

not joining this tournament.

Sis Da Liu.

Actually,

no matter what decision Liu Shi makes,

I'll support him.

Even if

he collapses at the arena,

I will

stay with him forever.

I know.

Unity & Discipline

The Olympic champion.

The recipient of Grand Slam.

Liu Shi.

In this competition,

Liu Shi is ranked number seven.

You can stay.

Finally, I've found my master.

Yes!

I've been playing ping-pong since I was young.

I was very lucky

to make the national team

with my chop techniques.

I met my master

and two buddies there.

And I've had international competitions.

And due to the lumbar injury,

I have no choice but to give up

on my beloved ping-pong.

Doing a chop shot is like doing magic.

If you want to attack, go ahead.

Retreat to defend as you want.

You can do a drop short with long pips.

You can do a forehand attack from a full-court.

What is a chop shot?

It's the king of singles.

Am I really going to give up

on my beloved chop shot?

Qualification Tournament of Suzhou 2015

Great!

Qin, let's get changed.

Get changed for the game?

It's already too late.

Your game is over.

Who are you playing with?

Qualification Tournament of Suzhou 2015

Great!

No matter who it is,

I insist on playing it.

You've submitted your retirement application form.

The team won't agree to it.

I've slept on it.

I really want to play this last game.

I've been playing ping-pong for so many years.

This is the last battlefield.

I'll enter it even if it kills.

What do you take the national team for?

You think you can play it just because you want to?

Qin Zhen, what's got into you?

This is the national team. He can't come and go as he pleases.

Besides,

Liu Shi's situation is very bad.

Even if he makes it to the WTTC,

he won't be able to play for it.

There's no need to bother about it.

Master.

In my whole life, I've never beg anyone for anything.

Even when

you gave up on me,

I didn't complain about it at all.

But I will always regret

not being able to join that game.

So I don't want my disciple to end up like me

and regret for his whole life.

♫ I've ever been lonely ♫

♫ Because no one cared about me ♫

Da Liu.

It's me.

Tell Yuan Ran

that Liu Shi is joining the game.

♫ I looked up at the stars and screamed out loud ♫

The opponent happens to be

good at dealing with your chop techniques.

Therefore, Zheng Hao will

replace you for today's finals.

Why?

It's a team decision.

Team?

I've won so many medals for the national team.

How could you replace me at such a critical moment?

Qin Zhen!

Collective honour is more important than personal honour.

You're still young.

Let's win the WTTC first. We'll talk about it after that.

How many chances do a player have to play in the WTTC?

Enough!

Cut it out!

The decision is final.

♫ No regret ♫

♫ The stubbornness of youth ♫

♫ Let's just say goodbye ♫

♫ Dear friend ♫

Brother Liu Shi.

The Suzhou WTTC

is a very important opportunity for me.

♫ Say goodbye to the past ♫

♫ The future is in the sky ♫

I don't want to be his training partner anymore.

So this time

I want to win.

♫ In the darkness, I will never feel confused again ♫

♫ And I see the old me ♫

To be a training partner.

That used to be

my way to survive.

I supported myself and Granny

by being a training partner.

That's how I made it through the hard times.

Qualification Tournament of Suzhou 2015 Liu Shi vs Song Min, 02-00

Liu Shi.

When he first joined the national team,

he defeated most of us

with his chop techniques.

No matter how we attacked him,

he managed to defend with his chop shots.

Even Fu Jing Chun lost to him.

How about you?

Pay attention to the game.

I joined the national team after that.

It's such a nice place with a lot of video tapes.

I secretly watched the tapes

and picked up many chop techniques.

Even though I didn't do them the same way,

it's enough to get me transferred from the training partner team

to the second national team.
