Ping Pong

This show is the selected drama by NRTA

in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the PRC,

and was funded under the 2019 Art Creation of Hubei.

Episode 38

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.

Why are you walking around?

Sit down.

It's nothing. Don't worry.

I have good taste, right?

The shirt I picked for you is nice, right?

These dishes are all your mother's favourite?

Fine. I remember.

This button...

Ran Ran.

Mom.

Liu Shi, this is my mother.

Mom, this is Liu Shi.

Hello, Mrs Yuan.

Hello, Liu Shi.

Sit down.

Mrs Yuan.

Have some water.

Don't be nervous.

Liu Shi.

Ran Ran told me

you're an athlete

so you must be a straightforward person.

I'll be frank with you then.

Since Ran Ran is willing to bring you to meet me,

that means

she cares about you

and really likes you.

It is our family's tradition

for our kids to decide on their own life

after they become adults.

Her father and I will support her decision.

Since Ran Ran likes you,

her father and I will like you too.

Mom.

We haven't even eaten anything yet.

Why did you go straight to the point?

Do you know how old are you?

Why won't you care about your own problems?

Liu Shi.

You look like an honest kid.

Our Ran Ran has been spoiled since young.

She looks obedient

but she has many flaws.

If she does anything wrong in the future,

do forgive her.

Tell me if she gives you trouble that you can't solve.

I'll solve it for you.

How old are you?

I'm 25 years old.

You're the same age as Ran Ran.

Both of you are not young anymore.

There's no rush for the wedding.

Both of you can get engaged this year.

Marriage is an important event.

You have to pick a good date.

Liu Shi.

I heard from Ran Ran...

It's fine. We'll handle everything.

That's right.

Ran Ran's father isn't here.

He asked me to give you a gift.

This is a gift for Ran Ran's father

from her grandfather during our wedding.

This

represents her father's blessing.

Mom, I'll accept this for him.

Can we eat first?

They are getting cold.

This child...

Let's eat.

Look.

All these dishes can't even make your mouth shut.

Eat more, Liu Shi.

Eat some vegetables.

What's wrong with you?

Did my mother scare you?

Don't be afraid.

My parents are good.

They just want me to get married soon.

They kept nagging me recently.

I was studying abroad and was far away from them previously

so they couldn't control me anyway.

My mother got excited

because I'm back now

and brought you to meet her.

It's my fault too.

It was too early to bring you to meet her.

No, Ran Ran. I don't blame you.

Your mother is very nice.

After meeting her today,

I realise something.

What is it?

Ran Ran.

I've decided to retire.

What's wrong?

Why?

I think it's time.

I can imagine

how much your parents love you

when I saw how you get along with your mother today.

I've never experienced that.

I didn't

grow up with my parents.

Granny was the one accompanying me.

When Granny passed away,

for a long time,

I kept feeling that...

I wonder if my life

is cursed?

One by one,

everyone

who loves me has left.

I don't want to say this.

I don't like to say this.

It feels weird

if I say this but

I'm grateful to God.

He let me

play Ping Pong

and meet you.

Ran Ran, did you know?

A long time ago,

I wished upon the star

saying that you are my angel.

No, you are better than the angel.

Liu Shi.

Ran Ran, listen to me.

Actually, I've already

considered this for a long time.

I'm 25 now.

I don't have a future

in the national team.

But today...

Ran Ran, after

I met your mom today,

I realised something.

I'm no longer alone now.

I have to think about both of our futures.

If I retire now,

I can still learn a new skill.

I can do something else

so you can live a better life.

I will let you live a happier life

after you be with me.

Are you done?

Liu Shi.

I hope

every decision you make in the future,

be it playing table tennis

or finding your mother,

you must

follow your own intentions.

Never compromise for anyone

including me.

Try this.

Play well this time.

Su Chang, don't worry.

It's better if Xu Tan doesn't participate.

Why does it matter?

I'm not afraid of him.

By the way, are there any good participants

this time?

Good participants...

There's one called Song Min. He's not bad.

Song Min?

Why didn't you mention him before?

He rose to fame after the Universiade.

Universiade?

He should be good then.

His skills are not bad

but he is a bit foolish.

He is always following Xu Tan around.

What do you think he is doing?

I always see him

at Garden Restaurant.

He is also telling me nonsense.

I don't know if...

Who is so senseless?

Mr Jia, you're here?

Come, take a seat.

Su Chang, you went to Lewen Sports?

It's all thanks to Mr Jia's support.

All right. We are a family.

Don't be so formal.

Brother, I have to congratulate you.

I heard from Su Chang

that you are going to participate in the Asian Championships?

I heard you saying

Song Min's skills

isn't bad.

He is also close to Xu Tan.

Yes.

Look. Someone that your brother appreciates

definitely has potential!

Yes.

Mr Jia.

Yu Ke Nan's form is dropping recently.

He isn't even participating in the Asian Championships.

The same person

can't always become the champion.

You are right.

It's normal for an athlete's form to fluctuate.

Besides, I think

Yu Ke Nan is still at his peak right now.

No one can beat him in the team.

What do you know, kid?

Just shut up.

He's still young.

By the way,

Yu Ke Nan's condition is quite bad.

His results have declined

because of scandals

and commercial activities.

Even his rank has dropped.

Su Chang, don't worry.

If I become the champion,

I'll definitely not do all that.

I'll train seriously every day.

Stop thinking too much.

You should speak when you become the champion.

That's enough.

He is still young.

Yes.

He might not think that

when he gets older.

You.

Trust me when you become the champion.

I will definitely

make you a star.

Come, a toast for becoming the upcoming champion.

Let's show Xu Tan and Song Min

how great you are.

Yes.

No, Mr Jia.

Our next competition is a team competition.

We are not rivals.

We are teammates.

Yes. Teammates.

I was mistaken.

I'll drink as a punishment.

My brother is good but he likes to argue.

That's good. Young people should be honest.

Here. Drink.

Hurry up.

Do your best.

Eat.

Let me fill your cup.

Su Chang,

why did you go to Lewen Sports?

What kind of question is that? Why can't I go?

No, I always think that

Mr Jia isn't a good person.

Can't you get a new job?

Get a new job?

Do you think it's easy to find a job?

You want to know why I work for him?

Let me tell you.

He is the only person

who is still willing to employ me.

No, Su Chang...

Let me finish.

Do you think I had it easy after the regional training?

Dad and Mom didn't agree for you to keep playing

but I supported you.

You've been training every day for five years.

Do you know what it's like outside?

Do you know how hard it is for a person like me

who only knows how to play ping pong

with no other skills to find a job?

Wait, Su Chang,

didn't you tell me that you were doing a project out of town

with an old teammate?

Everything is working out for you.

Use your brain.

If it's working out,

why didn't I dare to return home for the past five years?

You were busy every time I called you...

That's because I don't want all of you to worry about me!

So, what have you been doing

for the past five years?

I did everything

in order to survive.

Courier, waiter,

construction worker, security guard...

I did everything as long as they were hiring.

I really envy all of you.

You can stay in your team

while living a simple life.

Besides playing ping pong,

you don't have to think of anything else.

You are better than me.

You made it to the first team.

Do you know how happy I was

when you called me?

I was thinking.

My brother can realise

the dream that I'm unable to realise.

That is why I'll help you

realise your dream of becoming a champion no matter what.

What kind of person Jia Yu is doesn't matter.

What matters is that he has the funds and resources

to make you into a sports star.

He might help you to progress further

in the national team.

Su Shun, I beg you.

Don't resist all of these.

That's how the adult world is.

Su Chang, you've changed.

You were a ping pong player.

In the world of ping pong,

you can only succeed when you become better.

Even though I looked down on Xu Tan,

I saw him climbing up through the ranks

all these years.

I finally realise something.

Do you know, Su Chang?

He is not holding everyone back.

He is also not someone who relies on relationships.

He loves ping pong.

Su Chang, I understand.

You did it for my own good.

But I want to depend on my ability

if I'm going to become a champion.

Su Chang, listen to me.

Don't work with Jia Yu anymore.

Busan Asian Table Tennis Championships 2014

The hosts are playing dirty tricks again.

Xu Tan's training paddle

was deemed illegal previously.

Now, his match paddle is broken.

Xu Tan, let's calm down.

In a situation like this,

we can use a teammate's paddle.

Su Shun, take your paddle out. Hurry.

Hurry up.

My paddle is different from yours.

Can you use it?

The most important thing in a game isn't the paddle.

It's the player.

Thanks.

Do your best.

Do your best.

♫ Toss the ball, blood burning ♫

♫ Every point is shining ♫

♫ I can hear the heartbeat of Ping Pong ♫

♫ Forget the pain ♫

♫ Stand up and conquer it ♫

♫ Are you ready, champion ♫

♫ Keep sprinting ♫

Great.

With the main paddle's rubber spoiled

and the training paddle deemed illegal,

this is an unfortunate

and unprecedented situation

in the history of ping pong.

But Xu Tan withstands the pressure

and wins the fourth match to rescue Team China

from elimination

with his courageous counter loop in the last rally.

♫ In spite of all, just to let the whole world see ♫

♫ Passion is my religion ♫

♫ As long as the ball doesn't touch the floor, never giving up ♫

Besides witnessing

the improvement

of Xu Tan's skills in this match,

we can also see his quality as a leader of the national team.

In a key moment in the match,

he stabilised the morale

and his teammates

to obtain the last two crucial points of the final.

He is undoubtedly the best player in the competition.

Congratulations to Xu Tan. Congratulations to Team China.

♫ Let the youth stand on the stage ♫

♫ Are you ready, champion? ♫

That's enough.

All of you have different play styles.

Some people are good at forehand shots.

Some people are good at backhand shots.

Some people

are just delusional.

Sorry.

You are not delusional.

You are just weak.

You can never beat me even if you train hard for a year.

Su Chang.

Xu Tan's notes

seem to be useful.

I think he is improving.

You have to be careful.

Your condition was bad and he took advantage of that.

Even if he is witty, he still can't beat me

if his skills are bad.

I misunderstood you previously

but if you want to be a part of the national team,

you still need to improve your skills.

Xu Tan, I'll see you in the stadium.

♫ After experiencing it, you'll obtain ♫

Nice!

♫ Just like that, ten years have passed ♫

♫ It's just like yesterday ♫

♫ Even if there's no light shining on me ♫

♫ I'll still rush towards the peak ♫

Congratulations

♫ That inexperienced face ♫

♫ Look at this world ♫

♫ Still waiting for someone to turn the page ♫

♫ It's still that youth in the end ♫

♫ Let our story be proud ♫

♫ Working hard at dawn ♫

♫ Growing up, feeling confused ♫

♫ Play against each other for a few games ♫

♫ The happiness regardless of gains and losses ♫

♫ The times without any care ♫

Everyone's overall performance is not bad

in the Busan Asian Championships.

Xu Tan especially.

We are always talking about the spirit of ping pong.

What is the spirit of ping pong?

It is the spirit of aiming for the world, holding your country close to your heart,

make your country proud and never give up.

No matter how many times we fall,

we will still stand up again.

This is the spirit of ping pong.

Xu Tan.

Say something.

Well,

I'm not good at speaking.

First, I want to thank the team

for giving the three of us a chance to compete this time.

Since we are the champion

for the team competition.

I want to thank both my teammates,

especially Su Shun.

But I have to say

that the rubber on his paddle

is just so-so.

I think staying focused

is the most important thing

because none of the factors

can become an excuse for our failure.

That is why we have to work harder

and fight for a better result.

There's another good news.

Since Xu Tan's international ranking

has gone up rapidly with a huge improvement

during this period,

ITTF has awarded him

with the Breakthrough Star award

to congratulate him.

Mr Fu.

I have a small suggestion.

Can we end training early for today

so we can celebrate?

Yes. We've won the championship, right?

Okay. Suggestion approved.

Yu Ke Nan.

We have a few jobs recently.

I filtered them.

I think these two are suitable.

Both the amount given is not bad.

Have a look.

Just leave it there.

Okay. I'll put it here.

Oh.

Chen Fei'er's agent

contacted me just now.

Chen Fei'er

wants to ask you out

for dinner.

Chen Fei'er.

Why is she asking me out?

Yu Ke Nan.

This is good news.

Chen Fei'er still has a reputation

in the entertainment industry right now.

We should make more friends now.

More friends equal more opportunities.

No.

I didn't expect you

to be an expert in games.

What games do you usually play?

AskTao has a mobile version?

This is a guild war, right?

What a lively battle.

Can you stop annoying me?

The 21st

Asian Table Tennis Championships comes to a close.

Our national team players returned today

and was welcomed by many passionate fans.

Xu Tan! Xu Tan!

Due to Xu Tan's impressive performances in

international competitions,

he received the Breakthrough Star award by ITTF.

Liu Shi

Hello, Stone.

Ke Nan, dinner tonight at Changsheng Restaurant

to celebrate our victory in the Asian Championships!

I'm having dinner with Chen Fei'er.

Go without me.

Chen Fei'er?

That singer?

I like her songs!

Get an autograph for me.

I'm hanging up. Have fun later.

Hello.

Are you out of your mind?

What's wrong?

You don't focus on your career

and started to date a female star?

Yu Ke Nan, do you know what you are doing?

What are you talking about?

Are you still lying to me?

Take your phone out and have a look yourself.

Yesterday,

ping pong athlete, Yu Ke Nan, was spotted dating singer, Chen Fei'er,

at a Japanese restaurant at midnight.

Contract-signing ceremony

Xu Tan! Xu Tan!

I like you.

I hope all of you don't do this in the future.

Training Center of General Administration of Sport of China

All of you might've heard about this.

Ye Zhen Xin is retiring.

We heard about it.

As the captain, Zhen Xin has been discreet

and working hard.

In all aspects,

he is a wonderful example

for all of our team members.

Mr Fu.

I'll really miss him

after he retires.

That is why we've had a discussion

and decided to have a small retirement party

at Garden Restaurant.

Go back and inform your team members.

Everyone must be present.

Garden Restaurant?

Mr Gong is going to be broke.

It's all right.

Our team members have worked hard.

It's time to give them a breather.

Let's give Mr Gong a round of applause.

They deserve a breather

but the team still needs a leader.

Next,

the team will pick a new captain

according to the team members' match performance

and behaviour.

Coaches,

you should think about your captain candidate as well.

After that, we will make a unanimous decision within the team.

All of you can go back

and get your team members' opinions too.

We will use that as a reference as well.

All right?

That's all for today's meeting.

Dismissed.

Yu Ke Nan.

Xu Tan.

Come here for a while.

From today onwards,

both of you can start to train here.

Both of you should know

the position and importance of this place to the national team.

Cherish it.

I believe

everyone has seen the fitness test charts

that I've handed out.

I'll only talk about three people.

Liu Shi, Yu Ke Nan and Xu Tan.

The result of Liu Shi's fitness test

is a record low

since he joined the team.

His power, technique

and defense

are shockingly low.

About Xu Tan,

the data I've gathered

comes mainly from Korea Asian Championships and Japan Open.

For Yu Ke Nan,

I've gathered data from the London Olympics.

Compared to the data

from the London Olympics,

Yu Ke Nan's results did decline.

But he is still maintaining

a high standard within our team.

Regarding Xu Tan,

looking at the three aspects,

power, technique and defense,

he is already coming very close

to Yu Ke Nan at his peak.

Mr Fang,

these are the data I've gathered.

They are just data.

Mr Fang. Mr Qin.

The result from the data is out.

There will be good and bad results.

I won't be talking about that.

Coaches, you may talk about it to your team members.

I have to give praise to Yu Ke Nan.

He has been

putting his focus back to training recently.

His form is recovering.

It's similar to the time when he won the Grand Slam.

Next, I'll talk about

the direct tournament for the Suzhou World Table Tennis Championships.

Due to the venue issue,

the tournament will be carried out over two days.

The tournament format

will remain the same.

Two out of three wins.

The top four players

will directly participate in the Suzhou World Table Tennis Championships.

♫ Look at the clusters of stars on the sky ♫

♫ Listen to the sigh of the night-time breeze ♫

♫ I remember you who have kept me company all this while ♫

♫ How I wish that you'll be here at this very moment ♫

♫ Hoping to hear your voice ♫

♫ It's so near yet so faraway ♫

♫ How lucky am I ♫

♫ To have you by my side ♫

♫ During the time when I'm chasing my dreams ♫

♫ I still lack the courage ♫

♫ To tell you loudly ♫

Why are we walking for so long this time?

My parents miss me.

They want me to accompany them more.

Did you hurt your leg just now?

I'm fine.

How are you recently? Are you tired?

It's not bad.

The World Table Tennis Championships is coming soon.

This might be my last time

participating in a world tournament.

I have to work hard.

Besides, Yu Ke Nan is in good form recently.

I have to beat him no matter what.

Don't work too hard.

Your health is the priority.

You have to rest if you're injured

and treat it immediately.

Rest?

My career as an athlete is so short.

A professional athlete has no time to rest.

You wouldn't understand even if I tell you about it.

I don't understand.

That's not what I meant.

I was just...

Since you aren't an athlete, I...

Shall we take a seat?

Didn't you say you were looking for a job?

How was it?

I'm already in a new internship.

When was that?

Three months ago.

Xu Tan.

What do you think about our relationship?

It's not bad.

Everyone is hoping

for me to win the championship.

You are the only one who really cares about me.

But I'm still...

Training Center of General Administration of Sport of China

Ke Nan.

Can we stop training like this?

Get me someone else if you can't do it.

Continue.

Both of them have a similar play style.

But Song Min's skill

is obviously lower than Yu Ke Nan.

If he can improve his skill,

his potential

might be higher than Yu Ke Nan.

Xu Tan.

If you want to break through your limit,

you need to find an opponent like Yu Ke Nan

or a training partner like Song Min.

Start your warm-up.
