Ping Pong

This show is chosen by NRTA

in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the PRC,

and was funded under the 2019 Art Creation of Hubei.

Episode 37

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.

What did they say?

After the team's discussion,

they still think that Yu Ke Nan is a better choice.

After all, your experience and mentality for major competitions

are not up to par yet.

They said the same thing when I left.

Now, they are shoving this excuse at my face again?

What should I do then?

Xu Tan.

Show them what you are capable of

to prove that you deserve the position as the top player.

Where can I show my capability?

Yu Ke Nan is in such a bad shape now.

But the team still gave the chance to him, right?

What about me?

I can't even participate in a competition.

There are many competitions.

Besides WTTC,

there's China Open too.

And then, there's Japan and Korea.

How can you compare that to WTTC?

I don't want to talk to you now.

I know that you are mad now.

Nothing I say will register with you.

Xu Tan.

I hope that you can think about this calmly.

And then, we'll talk about the next step.

Okay. Congratulations to Ke Nan and Chao Yang

for making it to the top four of the WTTC.

China men's team has managed to enter the finals of the WTTC.

It can be said that this gold medal

will belong to China one way or another.

Yu Ke Nan is leading with ten to six.

He's leading by four points.

Will he be able to defend his title?

Let's look forward to it.

Yu Ke Nan!

Let's congratulate him

for being the world champion again!

He has succeeded to create

an era of ping pong that belongs to him.

Xu Tan.

This is so uncomfortable.

Who invented tie?

Come. Let's go and eat.

Hurry up.

Xu Tan, come.

Here you go.

Xu Tan.

It feels so nice

to see a familiar face here.

How is it? You must be doing very well

in the national team right now.

I guess I'm doing fine.

You are so humble.

Your friend?

Jia Yu.

You are from the national team?

You really have that spirit.

Come. Let's cheers.

Fine feathers make fine birds.

Both of you

are so handsome today.

What is he saying?

He said he has eaten a lot of food.

You are our pride.

-Congratulations. -Thank you.

Xu Tan is not here?

Xu Tan.

Ke Nan?

You are a superstar now.

Come. Congratulations

for becoming the world champion again.

Thank you.

To be honest,

I really miss the time when we played ping pong together.

At that time, I already knew that

sooner or later,

your name will go down in the history of ping pong.

I was right.

Please excuse me.

Come on. The food there is even better.

Let's go.

You can stop following me around.

Be careful.

Walk slowly.

I'll slow down.

You won't feel dizzy if we walk slowly.

Let's walk slowly.

Be careful.

Why did you ask me to drink so much?

You are really amazing.

You can really hold your liquid.

Sit down.

Do you know I'm amazing?

Of course.

You are amazing.

You are awesome.

Do you want to drink some water?

Let me get you some water.

Brother.

Drink some water.

No. I can't drink anymore.

I'll throw up if I drink it.

Even this is too much for me.

You don't want to drink anymore?

Brother.

Brother.

There's a sponsor

who can't wait for you to sign this contract today.

How about you sign this contract first

before you go to sleep?

What sponsor?

I've found a great employer for you.

It's a very powerful

sports company.

They said that

they'll make you into a superstar in sports.

Brother, sign the contract first.

What contract?

Why do I have to sign it today?

I don't want to sign it.

Sign it first, okay?

Brother.

Don't let it affect my training.

It won't.

It won't.

Brother, just sign here.

Sign here.

Brother, sign your name here.

Now, I can be rest assured.

Let me sleep.

Okay. Sleep.

I don't want to play anymore.

WTTC is an annual game.

Moreover, there's still the World Cup and the Olympics.

Without experience in major competition,

I'll not be able to participate in the international competition.

This is an infinite loop, right?

You have to fight for your chance.

As long as your work hard

and pull yourself together,

I'll help you fight for the chance.

♫ How far is the road? ♫

♫ How high is the sky? ♫

This week is the critical moment in our training.

At first, I wanted to fight my way into the first team.

But I lost three marks again today.

Actually, the hardship of training

is nothing.

The real agony is,

I have to face my failure again and again

every day.

Pressure has become a habit.

Maybe

it's really like what New Zealand said.

Some people are born to do something.

Don't slack off.

Just like Yu Ke Nan.

We are indeed not as talented as him.

But the training this time

is my only chance.

I have nowhere to retreat now.

So, I have to work hard

and follow closely to Yu Ke Nan.

♫ As long I have you to grow up together with me ♫

♫ As long as we chase after the desire of our hearts ♫

♫ We'll always have to search for it against the wind ♫

♫ From now on, we'll not be afraid of being hurt by failure ♫

♫ From now on, there'll be no place where we can't reach ♫

♫ We just need to set our eyes towards the sunrise ♫

♫ It's just ahead of us ♫

Xu Tan!

By the way,

I've found an internship in Beijing.

And I'm going to move here soon.

Then, we'll be able to meet each other often.

Sure. I can help you find a place to stay.

No need to worry about it.

Our company will provide accommodation for me.

Just focus on your training.

Sign for me.

Sign?

Yes. My internship will start soon.

I'm going to retire as the team manager.

Before I leave,

I want to give them some farewell gifts.

I'm not someone famous.

My signature worth nothing.

Who said you are not famous?

You are the future world champion.

I'm abusing my power for personal gain.

When you become famous,

these signatures will become Lvteng's treasure.

I think there's no hope for me now.

After such a long time,

I'm still marching on the same spot.

In the past, they said that I lacked physical strength.

So, I improved my physical strength.

Then, they said that my attack was not good.

Fine.

So, I changed my way of playing.

They said that backhand was not good.

So, I achieved victory with the backhand.

But now,

they say that I don't have a chance to play.

How can I continue to work hard then?

I'm sure that you'll succeed.

No matter what competition it is,

I'm going to participate in it.

You can laugh. But can you don't laugh

so dirtily?

Who's being dirty?

You don't know anything.

This is the smile of happiness.

Fine.

Happiness.

You.

How's your relationship with Yuan Ran?

I'm going to meet her mother soon.

You are obviously jealous of me.

You are going to meet her parent so soon?

Are you ready?

I don't need to prepare anything.

Yuan Ran said that

we are just going to have a meal with her mother.

You are such a nitwit.

Let me tell you.

Just a look from her mother

and you'll be a goner.

You are going to a battlefield!

Listen to me.

Ask Yuan Ran

about her mother's liking and taste.

I'm sure she knows.

Listen to her.

Then, both of you should discuss

and dress accordingly.

You need to look presentable.

That makes sense.

Go now. Why are you still sitting here?

Hurry up.

This is a serious matter.

You are going to a battlefield and you don't even have a gun.

Finish the food. Don't waste it.

Go now.

Here's your chance to compete.

This is a Shijiazhuang international invitation game.

I've talked to the team. They agreed to let you play.

A commercial game.

But a lot of top players will participate in it.

Players from my time, Chao Yang and Leng Yi,

will participate in it too.

They are doing it for the money.

Xu Tan.

Some of us play ping pong

to fulfil our dreams.

Some of us are doing it for the country.

You are very lucky

to have the chance to stay in the national team

to fight for the country.

What about the others?

They fight for themselves

or their families.

These kind of people are even more powerful.

Besides,

do you remember

Mr Fu's words?

He said that experience is gained through fights after fights.

I'll play it.

June 2013, Shijiazhuang

The competition is turning white-hot.

Chao Yang, the player from team Hebei is doing well.

But Xu Tan is looking nervous.

He had missed a lot of good opportunities.

For the last few rounds,

it'll be a battle of good mentality.

It's an edge ball.

It's not. Please continue with the game.

Master

Xu Tan.

This Sunday is the Dragon Boat Festival.

Come to my house for a meal.

That's it. Go do your things. Bye.

Why are you standing there? Come in.

There. No.

This is my boyfriend, Ou Yang.

Hi.

My childhood friend, Xu Tan.

Xu Tan.

Take a seat. What are you doing?

Drink some water first.

I have things to do.

I heard that you are a ping pong player

just like Uncle Lei.

Yes.

The ping pong players of China are the best.

Here's some noodles.

Here.

It's still hot.

Thank you.

Let's eat now.

I tasted the noodles just now.

It tasted wrong.

I don't know what's the issue.

Maybe it's the garlic's problem.

You are the one who peeled them, right?

Did I?

Let's eat, Father.

Let's eat.

Let's eat.

Can we eat properly today?

Since young, both of you always watch ping pong game when we eat.

I don't even dare to eat fish balls

because they look like ping pong.

We have a guest

and you are talking as if

I had tortured you since young.

I can't believe you.

Okay. Let's eat.

Eat some cucumbers.

Let me tell you. Those two missed shots

are quite unfortunate.

Eat this.

I was really nervous during the last few rounds.

That's not being nervous.

That's experience in major competition.

You lack experience, right?

Before this, they told me that

I lacked experience in major competitions.

I didn't believe them.

Now, seems like they are right.

Just eat your food.

They are always like this.

They always talk about ping pong.

Uncle.

Lei Lei once told me about

her 16th birthday.

Even her birthday cake had ping pong paddles on it.

Yes. I designed it myself.

Really?

Great.

It must be a cute design.

Is it that funny?

Well.

Did she tell you that

I even put auspicious words on that cake.

Good things come in pairs. May victory be with you.

Do you understand?

I'm sure you don't know.

When you are in China,

you are considered as

a banana.

Look.

The cultural difference between China and America

is quite...

Is quite big, right?

Continue to eat.

Let me tell you.

I already told Mr Fang about it.

You can participate in China's invitation game.

But you can compete abroad too.

Go abroad.

Go to Europe and

fight more with

the European players.

Then, you'll be exposed to more styles of playing.

We have a system to

train our country's athletes.

We have the country's support, right?

But it's different for them.

They have to hire their own coaches.

You should see how they train, right?

By going abroad,

including the seasonal change,

the language and environmental change,

the time different and other changes,

if you can adapt to those changes,

what will you be?

You'll grow stronger and become more skilful.

And they can all be translated into experience in major competitions.

You are right.

Can you get used to this?

If you can't, I'll peel some garlic for you.

I...

How about this. Finish this

and I'll cook this again for all of you.

Eat.

Eat.

It's delicious.

Unite & Discipline

Good day, my fellow audience.

Welcome back to the six thirty

'World of the Ping Pong'.

We've found a ping pong table here.

Look back over here.

This ping pong table

is a professional ping pong table

that we had prepared for today's show.

We have this great ping pong table

because we want to match it to

our awesome mysterious guest.

Okay. Let us reveal our

mysterious guest right now.

He is our world champion, Yu Ke Nan.

And this is our queen of music, Chen Fei'er.

And we have two more over here.

They are not important. So, I'll skip them.

Okay. Now, we can see that

Yu Ke Nan is not holding a ping pong paddle.

Instead, it's a rice paddle.

I wonder how powerful

can this rice paddle be.

Okay. Without further ado,

let the game begin.

How many gold medals have you gotten?

Six. Around six to seven.

I can't remember.

You are amazing.

Like I said,

you are the world champion.

Teng Biao.

Is this how you guide Yu Ke Nan?

What's wrong?

You are his master.

You don't know what happened to him?

How can the national team let him slack off so much?

Yu, calm down. Let's talk properly.

Forget it. I can't count on you.

I'll solve this myself.

Did the team blame you for that news?

No.

The media was just making it up.

What about you?

How's your competition lately?

It's going well.

But I can't get used to the jet lag.

It's like this in the beginning.

You just need to get used to it.

Ladies and gentlemen.

You are watching

the live broadcast of the 2014 ITTF Japan Open.

We are at the ten to eight crucial point right now.

Xu Tan is leading by two points.

Xu Tan from team China has defeated

the famous player from Japan, Ken Yasujima, with eleven to eight.

Let's congratulate Xu Tan.

Here. Take your cold medicine.

After his victory in the Japan Open,

Xu Tan is ranked third in the world now.

But have you realised this?

Now, he feels a little bit...

A little bit...

Cold.

Yes. Cold.

Yes.

Have you eaten?

How are you lately?

Not bad.

I won, right?

Not bad?

Are you sure?

Did you play to win?

What's the point of playing then?

Xu Tan.

Think about it yourself.

Why are you playing ping pong?

For my girlfriend.

Where are you going?

I'm going to find my girlfriend now.

We've already

chosen the players who will be competing in

the Asian Cup Table Tennis Tournament.

They are

Song Min,

Su Shun,

He Qing,

Ma Yu Yang

and Xu Tan.

For the past few months,

with Mr Fang's efforts, Xu Tan had

participated in a lot of competitions.

And he got the gold medal in

the Japan Open this time.

His ranking has risen quickly and he's ranked third now.

He's doing well.

The experience that Xu Tan gained

from these competitions

is invaluable.

The team has seen his improvement.

I hope that every coach here

can learn from each other.

You should devise a training plan

that suits them for each of your own player.

Okay. Go ahead and devise your training plan now.

You are dismissed.

Mr Fu.

Yu Ke Nan

is back on training.

Mr Fu.

Although Yu Ke Nan

doesn't look like he cares,

he's actually very eager to participate in this competition.

I know.

Let me finish.

His shoulder is injured.

But based on my observation,

his injury won't affect him from competing.

So, Mr Fu, do you think...

Do you think that Yu Ke Nan's shoulder injury

is the only issue here?
