Ping Pong

This show is the selected drama by NRTA

in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the PRC,

and was funded under the 2019 Art Creation of Hubei.

Episode 35

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.

Why didn't you turn on the light?

You gave me a scare.

If you feel upset,

just talk to me.

You will feel better.

Your lumbar injury.

Your situation is no better than mine.

Xu Tan is going back to Beijing tomorrow.

And Chang Sheng's restaurant

will be open sometime later.

I'm thinking

of inviting everyone for a gathering.

Don't even think of not going.

You've done with the competition.

Don't pull a trick.

Just go.

And have some drink.

You're new to AskTao Mobile.

But you're already good at it.

With some luck from my fellow Xu Tan,

may Taishang Laojun give me his blessing

and get me Tai Chi Bear.

I made it!

Friends.

This is the best mount.

I got it!

You're marvelous.

With some more luck from your fellow Xu Tan,

you could go and buy a lottery ticket later.

That's enough.

Quick.

Here, let's toast to Xu Tan.

Cheers.

You're our pride.

Thanks.

A thank you won't do. You have to buy us a meal.

My friend

happens to run a hot pot restaurant in Beijing.

It's not far from her. What do you think?

I'm not joining.

I have to play an eSports tournament.

Si Heng, you're meeting Xu Tan's friends soon.

Are you nervous?

They should be the ones to feel nervous.

Move.

The atmosphere is really nice.

Why did you go with this style? Jeez.

Here.

Boss.

Here.

You shouldn't have done so.

It's a token of regard.

All right. Great.

Have a seat in there.

Head inside.

Thanks.

Look who's here!

Welcome everyone.

Please excuse my poor service.

Here.

Thank you.

Here.

Thank you.

Congratulations.

Thank you.

Thank you.

The meat looks just nice.

Okay, enjoy your food.

Enjoy your food.

Join us here later.

You eat up.

Thank you, Chang Sheng.

Serve them well.

Well, it's rare for us to have a gathering.

I'm so happy that we made it happen today.

It's been such a long time since we ate together.

Our

Xu Tan is back, too.

He's back with his girlfriend.

And Brother Jing Chun is leaving.

It's... No.

It's...

How could you say that?

I think...

Enough.

Since Stone is chasing me away,

I'll do the first toast.

Okay?

Well,

I’m officially leaving the national team tomorrow.

All these years,

I've trained and lived

with you guys.

I really feel very honored.

And thank you all for taking care of me.

Also, I'd like to congratulate Ke Nan and Xu Tan.

Both of you are really getting more powerful.

After I leave,

the national team will pin its hopes on you.

I'm not good at words, too.

I'll just drink to it.

Here.

Here, let's have a toast!

The first toast

is for the days we worked hard for ping-pong.

Here.

Here.

Let's do it together.

Let's drink up.

Drink.

Finish it in one gulp.

The drink is a bit strong.

My name is Ma Chuan.

Ma what?

Ma Chuan.

A plain where horses gallop.

Here.

Xu Tan.

Let me toast to you

for getting the first place in Universiade.

We brothers are so happy for you.

We need you in the dorm.

Come back quickly.

When you're back,

three of us can analyse games

and eat two-flavour hot pot together.

That'd be so great.

That's right.

Ke Nan, three of us will have a toast.

Senior Jia Chen.

Nice to meet you.

I didn't meet you before.

Senior.

You know each other?

Of course.

Are you kidding me?

Let's drink to it.

I've drank it.

Don't drink too much.

Starting from tomorrow,

Fu Jing Chun officially loses to Yu Ke Nan.

Don't say like that.

Fill it up.

Fill it up.

Punish yourself with a drink.

Don't drink too much.

Drink a bottle.

I'll have a bottle, too.

Here.

I'll drink one on our behalf.

Just do your best.

I'm going to drink it now.

Drink a bottle.

Or you don't belong in the first team.

Have you heard about

the resignation of Mr Zheng Hao?

I have.

I've got something to say about it.

This Mr Zheng

was just too strict.

Luckily I was

reassigned in advance.

Who were the victims?

Xu Tan.

Ke Nan.

Let me tell you.

The one who has had the worst of it

is this brother of mine.

Brother Fu, just bare your heart today.

Do you feel

very satisfied now?

Say it.

Me and Zheng Hao...

Me and Mr Zheng.

What happened between us

can't be explained in one or two words.

He's someone who cares only the results,

not the process.

He thought highly of me,

so he came up with all kinds of ways to force me to improve myself.

Even though the training was very tough,

the effect was undeniable.

It's just that...

It's just that I thought

we're not only coach and pupil.

To put it simply,

the biggest problem between me and him

was that I once thought that,

no matter what happened to me,

he would take my side.

This feeling.

I know it, too.

Anyway, things are different now.

It's all in the past, isn't it?

Brother Jing Chun.

Eventually, I understood it.

That he got his reasons and methods.

And I couldn't make it.

Even if it's without Mr Zheng,

I would have to face things by myself.

Here.

Ke Nan.

There's something I need to say.

In the future...

No.

Now,

you've had very impressive results.

But

you can't just replace

Mr Zheng just like that.

Once a master, always a master.

Don't pinch me. It's what it is.

Once a master, always a master.

Right?

Ma Chuan.

If you had lost the Kuwait Open,

you'd have been chided.

If I had lost the Moscow World Table Tennis Championships,

I'd have been dismissed.

Yes.

I'm to blame.

I'm to blame for replacing your Mr Zheng.

But do you know what would a capable person think

when he's not given any opportunity?

All of you are champions.

What was I thinking

when I worked as a training partner

alone in the first team?

Have you ever stood in my shoes?

Tell me, then.

When the only opportunity appears in front of me,

what should I do?

If my situation had been like this,

I'd have been the first one

to replace Zheng Hao!

Ke Nan, I didn't...

Ke Nan, I...

What happened?

Brother Fu.

I'm such a blabbermouth.

I...

What happened?

Here, have a drink.

Xu Tan.

I've watched your performance in the Universiade.

Come to the first team and report yourself next Monday.

What's the matter?

My opportunity has come.

Unity & Discipline

2012, Beijing

Welcome back, Xu Tan.

I've watched the Universiade game.

During the last game,

when the opponent scored several points in a row,

my heart was in my throat.

Your last few serves were so amazing.

Thank you.

I've never seen you before.

♫ Just like that, you have accompanied me for ten years ♫

I joined the first team in 2007.

My name is Xu Tan.

Hello, my name is Wu Kai.

Well...

♫ Still waiting for someone to turn the page ♫

♫ It's still that youth in the end ♫

Xu Tan?

It's really you, Brother Tan.

Brother Tan. You know,

it's so awesome of you

that you beat Kandao

with a powerful forehand serve

during the Universiade.

It's really wonderful, Brother Tan.

Brother Tan, are you busy?

Well, could you help me take a photo?

Sure.

It's truly an amazing game, Brother Tan.

This one.

Wait a second. I need to show the flag.

Brother Tan, take a horizontal shot.

Get everything taken.

Sure.

Done.

Brother Tan, you're quite good at taking pictures.

I'll send two of them to my mom.

By the way, Brother Tan,

don't laugh me

for sending my mom the pictures.

That's all right.

I did the same thing when I first came here.

You should've looked that way.

You're not being cooperative at all.

Finally, you're back.

Gather round.

Gather round.

I'll make it brief.

First of all, please welcome our new coach

Mr Fang.

Also, let's welcome our new teammates.

There's of course a veteran teammate among them.

Xu Tan, play well.

Since we need to prepare for the Olympics,

and there are new coach

and teammates,

the coaching team has decided

to make some adjustments to the team.

Song Min will train under Mr Teng.

Xu Tan and Su Shun

will train under the new coach Mr Fang.

You will use these six months well

to prepare for the Olympics.

Do your very best.

Dismiss.

How was it?

How's your life as a university student?

Not bad.

Your hairstyle has changed, too.

This outfit suits you quite well.

Does it?

I haven't gotten used to it.

Xu Tan.

How long has it been since you went to university?

I think it's about two years.

Time is very precious

for an athlete.

Do you still want to be a champion?

Xu Tan, do you want to be a champion?

Yes.

Do you want to get the Grand Slam?

Of course.

All right.

But you must remember this.

Remember this winning feeling,

no matter what happens in the future.

Because this feeling

is the most precious motivation for an athlete.

Yes. If not, why would I have come back?

Good job. Let's go.

Xu Tan.

Your fitness test report is out.

Brother Tan, you're a very all-round player.

You see, except for experience,

you've scored full marks for the rest.

Especially the rotation aspect.

I guess

I must learn from you in the future.

Those were just numbers.

Is it fun to be a champion

just because Yu Ke Nan let you be one?

Hey.

You don't have to let me score.

Xu Tan, you've become a big eater.

You're catching up to me.

No, you're surpassing Fatty.

Hurry up and eat.

Are you eating?

You're literally stuffing it in your mouth.

Did Yu Ke Nan torture you again?

My goodness.

He trains like a crazy man.

And he doesn't let me rest if he doesn't makes high-quality serves.

I'd become handicapped in no time.

Consider yourself lucky.

There're many who want to be

Yu Ke Nan's training partner.

Training with a powerful player is the best way to improve oneself.

Cut it out already.

I'm not sure if I can improve myself.

But look at this.

My appetite increases day by day.

You don't believe it?

Ask Xu Tan

if Yu Ke Nan

became this powerful because he was

the training partners of Three Gods?

Yes.

I'll get going.

You're done eating?

Yes.

I'll bring him some rice.

He's still training?

That man is like a crazy. I'm taking off.

This won't do.

It's not good for stomach.

Xu Tan, I actually quite envy you.

At least, you're still

a confused young person.

Did you know?

One

must undergo a process where he's sceptical of himself.

I've had the same situation.

But you can't just sit here and fantasise about it.

There's no use doing so.

It doesn't change a thing.

You need to focus on

what you want to do.

You must focus on it.

Look at them.

They know what they want to do.

What about you? What goal do you have?

Career Guidance for Fresh Graduates?

Here's the only good thing about being a ping-pong player.

We need not worry about job hunting.

What do you want to do after the graduation?

Someone as talented as me

never worry about job seeking.

But I want to find an easy job

that pays a lot.

An easy job that pays a lot?

Whether it pays a lot or not,

I don't think that's important.

The key is you're happy with it.

Stop thinking about money.

Well...

And you've got your parents, too.

Stop it.

It's getting so late.

If you don't head back,

you won't make it to the morning training.

Fine, I'll stay for a bit, then.

Let's wait until the rain stops.

Okay.

I'll keep you company for a while, then.

You're unstoppable.

Ke Nan, Xu Tan's back tonight.

Aren't you going to take us out to hot pot?

Nice shot!

Brother Ke Nan is more powerful than ever

in doing the backhand banana flip.

I think he'll remain the lead player

Next year, I'll aim to be

That way, I can be one of the top eight players in 2015.

In 2016, I'll be qualified

It seems that Yu Ke Nan is very prepared this time.

You should've gotten used to it by now.

Brother Tan said many things to me today.

He said

my playing style and Brother Nan's are quite alike.

He even praised me

for being potential.

But he said that,

if I keep being Brother Nan's training partner,

I might never be able to become successful.

Xu Tan said so?

Yes, he did.

Do you feel that

Xu Tan has changed into a different person?

You're talking about Brother Tan?

Nothing.

As for this matter,

you must give it a good thought
