This show is the selected drama by NRTA

in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the PRC,

and was funded under the 2019 Art Creation of Hubei.

Episode 33

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.

You're back?

What's wrong?

Mr Zheng

has been waiting for you.

Have some fruit.

Thank you.

It's fine.

I'll leave you two alone.

It's so late. Where did you go?

Have a seat. I'm going to bed.

Here, sit down.

Let's have a chat.

Rest early as much as possible.

Keep your competition form consistent.

An organised routine is important.

The Paris World Cup is coming too.

Don't let it affect your result.

You come here so late to find me

just to say this?

The result is mine.

I'll take full responsibility.

Don't worry.

The result is yours

but it is not yours alone.

You are a national team player.

Your words and actions

represent an organisation,

the nation

and the sport.

Or you, Mr Zheng?

What do you mean?

Everyone knows

you have no weak students.

You only speak with your results.

Competitions are about speaking with your results.

What's wrong with that?

Those who are wrong have already gone to university.

There's nothing wrong with me.

I didn't hear you clearly. Say it again.

♫ Hoping to hear your voice ♫

♫ It's so near yet so faraway ♫

♫ How lucky am I to have you by my side ♫

♫ During the time when I'm chasing my dreams ♫

♫ I still lack the courage to tell you loudly ♫

♫ You have always been my resolution to keep moving forward ♫

♫ At a faraway dream, I'm holding your hands ♫

♫ That is the whole purpose ♫

♫ Of my life ♫

Don't be nervous later.

Talk to him nicely.

Get as much as possible.

Mr Wang.

You can't just take my money

without giving me an invoice.

All right, within this week.

Sure.

Send it to me

within this week.

Sure.

There are phone calls every day.

Let me introduce you.

This is Mr Zhang from my club.

Mr Zhang.

This is Xu Tan.

Xu Tan, right?

Mr Zhang. Xu Tan has been my teammate for a long time.

His techniques and personality

is amazing.

You can rest assured.

That's a given.

I believe in someone

recommended by Jing Chun.

Have a look.

Not bad.

Xu Tan.

There's no problem with your ability.

It's okay.

I also have high hopes for your future.

We are willing to sign you.

But the details

has to be confirmed before signing the contract.

I have to discuss it with you.

Sure.

This is a sample of our club's contract.

Take a look.

Sure.

Mr Zhang.

I'll leave the contract details to both of you.

I'll wait for you guys outside.

Okay.

Xu Tan.

I'm a straightforward person.

Let's be honest with each other.

Do you have any expectations for your annual salary?

I'm hoping to get a top player's standard salary.

Mr Zhang, this request shouldn't be too much to ask for

in the CTTSL, right?

Your request is fair

but you have no experience in the CTTSL.

Besides,

you didn't even play in an international tournament,

right?

Yes.

Like this, Xu Tan.

I'll pay you half of it.

I believe you have the potential.

Play well and get some results.

Money is not a problem.

Mr Zhang.

I need this money urgently, so...

It's not a lot.

We can pay you this amount as well.

But you are a rookie.

This is unprecedented in our club.

Mr Zhang, will this work?

I'll play a few games for you.

If I win all of them,

we'll discuss the contract according to the salary I requested.

Help me out.

If I lose,

you can decide my annual salary.

How's that?

Si Heng.

I've signed it.

I don't think I have any problem

playing in the CTTSL.

Xu Tan.

I'll be hanging up.

Xu Tan.

Mr Zhang told me about the contract.

Why did you sign it like that?

What's wrong?

Do you know who is our next opponent?

Who is it?

Xu Tan?

It's true!

It hurts!

Sorry.

I'm telling you.

Fu Jing Chun gave me a call in the afternoon.

He told me that Xu Tan signed the contract in the afternoon.

I think Team Tianjin's next match at home

is facing your Team Shanghai.

That's fate.

Please be professional.

It's been half a year

since both of you last met, right?

Ke Nan, what are you thinking now?

What can I think of?

It's not bad.

I think it's impossible to avoid him now.

Why don't you use this league match

as an opportunity to talk to Xu Tan?

Both of you are brothers.

You won't know a lot of people like him in your life.

Keep doing that. I'll be going back.

I have something to tell you.

What is it?

Stop writing.

Do you think writing this will solve your problems?

How can I solve it then?

Change your coach.

You went there?

Didn't I tell you not to go? Why did you...

Why did you stop me?

I...

For this?

No.

The match is starting.

Why are we all gathered here?

Don't be nervous. Relax.

Their second player will definitely be Dong Yu.

You'll be fine.

Let me announce the order for the next match.

Third singles player, Ma Yu Yang.

Second singles player, Fu Jing Chun.

First singles player, Xu Tan.

Xu Tan is the first singles player?

Do you know this is his first CTTSL match?

Do you know the first player of our opponent is Yu Ke Nan?

Xu Tan has left the national team for quite a while.

He hasn't regained his form yet.

I'll just let him play against Yu Ke Nan.

If he wins, it's a miracle. If he loses, that's normal too.

If we are going with this order,

you must defeat Dong Yu,

their second singles player.

Tell me the truth.

Did Mr Zhang ask you to arrange this?

This is our unanimous decision

after careful consideration.

This is the safest order to win this match.

Do you have a better arrangement?

I'm all ears.

What do you mean?

If you do that,

how can he play...

Yu Ke Nan, right?

I'll play.

Yu Ke Nan

Yu Ke Nan

Thanks to the members of our cheerleader squad.

Welcome to today's

Chinese Table Tennis Super League match.

Yes, today,

we are at Tianjin Lvteng Normal University.

The home team, Team Tianjin Guoben

will be facing Team Shanghai Thunder.

My friends, where is your applause?

All right.

Next, let's welcome the home team's team members.

Please welcome, our coach, Li Xiang,

and our players, Fu Jing Chun,

Ma Yu Yang and Xu Tan!

Next, let's welcome the away team,

Team Shanghai.

Please welcome, the coach, Liu Shi Ming

along with Qiu Tian Chi, Dong Yu

and Yu Ke Nan.

He is the most popular kid.

The match is starting soon.

Please look forward to it.

The first match is

Yu Ke Nan versus Xu Tan.

Tianjin Guoben vs Shanghai Thunder Xu Tan vs Yu Ke Nan

Why is it both of them?

Yu Ke Nan is on form right now.

Xu Tan will never win.

Do we have to play like this?

I don't know what is Mr Zhang thinking.

Mr Zheng.

Hello.

Don't misunderstand.

You are still the coach.

My disciples are having a match today.

I'm just here to have a look.

I understand.

Yu Ke Nan.

Come here.

Remember.

No matter how bad is Xu Tan,

he is still an opponent who knows how you play.

You can never underestimate him.

Although both of you trained together before,

he will definitely

think of every way possible

to drag the rally past your first three strokes.

You cannot be anxious during your first three strokes.

Be steady.

Don't embarrass me.

Go.

Victory for Ke Nan!

Victory for Ke Nan!

Victory for Ke Nan!

Xu Tan, do your best!

Whose home ground is this anyway?

Xu Tan, do your best!

Good job, Xu Tan!

That's another point

Yes, his stroke is accurate

and he is patient until Yu Ke Nan makes a mistake.

Yu Ke Nan is indeed the world champion.

In this game,

he showed his incredible offence.

It's fine.

Even though Xu Tan is trailing,

let's cheer

for the home team!

Team Tianjin!

Do your best!

Team Tianjin!

Do your best!

Team Tianjin!

Do your best!

What did I tell you just now?

You have to be steady in your first three strokes.

What's going on?

Why are you so rash?

How did you lose that six points?

Do you think you are very good now?

I'm talking to you.

I'm not trying to argue with you.

You'll be playing at the World Cup soon.

If you can't even defeat Xu Tan comfortably,

how can you get a place at the World Cup?

He is on form right now.

Keep your stamina.

Don't let him corner you.

Mr Feng.

Xu Tan. I heard from Lei

that Yu Ke Nan used to train with you

at the national team.

Both of you know how each other plays.

I guess.

But he is better now.

Indeed.

Yu Ke Nan's first three strokes

is perfect in terms of technique.

How do you plan to play this game?

Defend.

You have to do like I say.

Don't throw a tantrum here.

Hurry and return to the table.

Do your best.

All right.

The second game will start soon.

Xu Tan is losing to Yu Ke Nan at the moment

after losing the first game with a score of six to eleven.

Let us look forward

to their improved performance in the second game.

Everyone,

let's cheer for them!

Team Tianjin!

Do your best!

Team Tianjin!

Do your best!

Team Tianjin!

Do your best!

Nice.

Yu Ke Nan has penetrated his opponent's defence yet again.

Nice shot. Another point.

Xu Tan is playing well.

He can still be on par

with Yu Ke Nan after not playing for so long.

Nice.

Do you think that is the level of Yu Ke Nan,

the World Champion?

Xu Tan, do your best!

Xu Tan, do your best!

Do your best!

In a match,

no matter how many skills you know,

if you don't dare to use it,

it's the same as not knowing it

and having nothing.

There's another key to the reverse loop.

That is explosive force.

The foundation of explosive force

comes from absolute power.

Resistance training

will improve your explosive force,

core power and running speed as fast as possible.

Great shot!

Amazing!

Nice shot!

Great shot!

Brilliant!

Xu Tan's reverse loop of the century

has broken

Tiger Yu Ke Nan's history.

Time out.

He has shown everyone

the daring spirit of Chinese Ping Pong.

What's wrong?

You tell me what's wrong?

How did your rhythm

get messed up so bad by Xu Tan?

I know.

Why are you still losing when you know that?

Why did you rush your loops?

He played so many lobs to you

yet you hit the ball out.

How dare you call yourself a World Champion?

You can't even defeat a university student who was advised to leave the team.

Aren't you embarrassed?

For what?

Xu Tan played better than me in this game.

Do you think he plays well?

Fine, both of you should change your position.

What's so bad about that?

What's so bad about going to university?

If Xu Tan is still here,

I wonder how much he would've suffered under you.

Fu Jing Chun's leg and my shoulder.

Which of those

weren't caused by your training methods?

I did it for your own good!

For our own good?

Ask them and see if it's really for our own good.

We are just

your sacrifices to become a champion.

Becoming a champion for me?

Did you not improve your results under my guidance?

Yes, you became the World Champion!

Fu Jing Chun went to the Olympics!

Both of you are the most valuable player

in the domestic league.

Which goal did you not achieve under me?

Continue your match.

We'll talk after the match is finish.

Go!

Even if I retire from this match,

got suspended or got expelled,

I will not listen to your nonsense again!

I'm telling you.

I'll do whatever it takes to get rid of you as my coach!

What are you talking about?

Say it again!

Mr Zheng.

The kid is so rude.

Calm down.

He is young and immature.

Ke Nan!

We can see

our national team's coach, Zheng Hao,

having a quarrel with Yu Ke Nan.

Yu Ke Nan has fallen on the ground.

Everyone,

let's take a break

and go to the commercials.

Xu Tan.

Have a look

and see if there's any problem.

I didn't expect

to sign you so easily.

By the way,

that was such a dramatic win.

Don't tell me that Yu Ke Nan

did it purposely

to help you as a friend.

He is not my friend.

Even if we played until the end,

I'll still be the one who will win.

This incident has a very bad effect.

Both you and Mr Zheng's name are still

on the headlines of the sports news.

What does the team plan to do?

There will be a serious punishment.

A month of training suspension.

Reflect on your mistakes.

For a month?

There are less than 20 days until the World Cup.

I don't need you to remind me of that.

What about Zheng Hao?

He was the one who hit me first.

How do you plan on punishing him?

The team has its own decision regarding Mr Zheng.

Do you have the right to think about that?

Mr Fu, what about the World Cup?

You have to give me another chance.

Just think of it as making amends for my mistake, all right?

Yu Ke Nan!

There's nothing to bargain about.

Don't think you are special because you are the top player.

The national team is fair to everyone.

Like this.

Go back first.

Wait for an announcement for your return to training.

It's settled?

Yes.

The surgery will be arranged soon.

Great, it's finally settled.

Why don't you look happy?

I think it's regretful.

Both of us had a match when we were on the second team.

The match didn't end.

It happened again this time.

Do you think I really need to thank him?

I don't know about what has happened in the past

but this time, it's because of him.

It's not your fault.

Why is it so hard to have a match with him?

As long as you keep playing,

you will definitely

have a chance to have a match with him.

A chance.

Where can I find the chance?

Should I participate in the Universiade?

You should've participated in it earlier.

That's where you belong.

Let me tell you a secret.

The chairman of Xu Tan's International Fan Club

is me.

Are you happy?

Are you surprised?

Let me say this.

The 2011 Summer Universiade

is coming.

Lvteng Normal University

has the honour of becoming

the university that represents

the China university students' Ping-pong team.

After a discussion with the school's management team,

we've decided on the school's only participation quota

to go to

Han Dong Ming.

Coach, are you sure?

Dismiss and start to warm-up.

The training begins in 15 minutes.

Dismiss!

About that,

let me go to

the Universiade.

Didn't I ask you before?

You said you aren't interested.

Men are unpredictable.

Just wait. You'll get your chance.

Hello.

Mr Feng.

What's going on?

Lei.

I think it's almost time.

It'll backfire if we keep forcing him.

I think

for this kid,

we have to

grind him until the end.

I'm sure you've watched the CTTSL.

Xu Tan defeated Yu Ke Nan.

His mental attitude and spirit have grown stronger.

Isn't that what you said?

It's time to push forward after buffering for some time.

This is good news.

But we have to see

how he plans on moving forward.

What kind of weird idea are you thinking of again?

Your disciple thinks

I'm playing a trick on him purposely.

Stop that.

Shirking from your responsibility?

Listen here, he is now your disciple.

Fine, he is my disciple.

I dare not neglect him.

At this moment,

I think the kid only lacks one last thing.

What?

A last push?

What is it?

Mr Feng?

Don't you know that?

Aren't professionals in universities like you

showing a bad example?

All right, I'll end our chat here.

When we meet, I'll tell you

what is the last thing that he lacks.

♫ Let our story be proud ♫

♫ Working hard at dawn ♫

♫ Growing up, feeling confused ♫

♫ Play against each other for a few games ♫

♫ The happiness regardless of gains and losses ♫

♫ The times without any care ♫

♫ After experiencing it, you'll obtain ♫

♫ An extraordinary quality ♫

Your father's surgery is done.

How is he recovering?

He's recovering well.

He will be discharged in a month.

That's not bad.

Everyone can rest assured now.

It's tiring for your mother

to take care of him.

I've watched the league match.

You played well.

The game wasn't finished.

It's an unfinished game indeed.

You only played a counter loop.

Xu Tan.

If that match has ended,

who do you think will win that match?

I think both of you has a chance of winning.

But in all fairness,

your chance of winning is lower.

Let's be frank.

Besides the counter loop,

where do you think

our advantages are showing?

Being an all-rounder.

My forehand is not bad.

This is your self-appraisal.

An all-round technique

and a decent forehand, right?

What about your backhand?

Xu Tan.

With your skills right now,

playing a normal player is not a problem for you.

But if you are

playing against a top player like Yu Ke Nan,

your weakness in your backhand

will be targeted immediately.

Once he has targeted that weakness,

he will start to rip you apart from there

and destroy you.

Do you believe that?

So, looking at the facts,

our skills

are not as invincible

as we think they are.

If you want to keep winning,

you have to work hard

in making your skills invincible

so you can control the game anytime, anywhere.

At that time, you can use your invincibility

to defeat any player.

Got it?

Yes.

Before the Universiade,

you have to

learn Yu Ke Nan's speciality,

the backhand banana flip.

Its quality must also be better than his.

He has been practising this move for so many years. I...

I'll practise it.

Can't I just practise it?

This is...

It's a new era now.

Physical punishment is not allowed now.

This is...

Frying eggs?

My foot.

This is the special weapon

I made especially for you.
