I was excited.

I was thrilled.

I mean, I planned to just pour myself
into my work.

It isn't just standing around, you know.

I mean, you have to know how to stand
and what to do.

I was so excited.

They didn't even know what to do with
me.

But I worked hard.

I wanted to please them.

I wanted to be good.

I'd work for hours at a time. You know,
listening to what they told me and

And after being here only a week, I've

had definitely placed orders for me.

kind of unusual, offbeat subjects.

Well, this is... It's for an interview

we're going to a

nudist camp.

A nudist camp?

Yes, it's a documentary about nudism.

Well, I don't think I'll go.

But you've got to understand, this is
all very straight and moral, nothing

fishy about this.

Oh, listen.

Or maybe you'd better take me home.

You've got the wrong attitude. I felt
exactly the way you did at first. But

then I did some research on it, and
you'd be amazed how natural it is. Why,

these people, some good, everyday,
ordinary people, just like it, and

that's all there is to it.

Look, and haven't you been listening to
anything I've been telling you?

That's just what I'm trying to get away
from, bodies.

Well, that's all I am is just a body.

Now, you have the wrong attitude.

Oh, maybe I have.

May I tell you something? Look, I am not
a nudist. It's my job. Why, do you know

something? I have never even been...
What I mean is, this would be very good

I'm through with that kind of thing.

Just a minute. You've got the whole
wrong attitude about this, and I want to

show you something.

Now, it's not what you think.

Now, this is some footage of that nudist
camp taken by my studio.

It's going to be used as background for
the show.

I just want you to look at it. I've been
studying it all week. I bet you have.

Now, just look at it.

I don't want to see it. Now, just sit
down and relax. It won't hurt you. Oh,

all right.

Now, this is Sunny Rest Lodge. It's
about a hundred miles from here.

It's unusual, I know, but the studio
thinks it'll make an interesting

presentation for my show, and, well,
frankly, I do too.

Now, you see, it looks like any other
vacation spot, except the people don't

wear any clothes. Well,

they swim and they sunbathe and just
relax entirely in the nude.

It's going to be my job to find out why.

What I noticed right away is that, well,
everything seems so calm and peaceful.

Nobody's rushing around in a big hurry
to go somewhere or do something.

Nobody's knocking themselves out to have
fun either.

It seemed just like a group of happy,
healthy people doing what they want to

do and enjoying a summer day.

Now, of course, they are naked.

It's a pretty strange and unusual manner
of dress, or I should say undress, I

guess.

It doesn't seem to make any difference
at all. No one's shy.

No one seems aware of any immodesty. And
no matter what you may have thought

about nudism, you can see that there's
certainly nothing lewd or obscene about

these people.

You know, there are many aboriginal
tribes even today who don't wear

clothes, but I guess it's a different
story because... It concerns a whole

society. Now, here these nudists are
members of, well, they're members of our

clothes-conscious civilization, and
they're breaking with a very strong and

very important custom.

There must be an important reason or
idea or something behind this.

Well, of course, they practice their
nudity in the privacy of their own

resorts. There's no rebellion or
antagonism against society, no offense

to recognized customs, and, of course,
these same people do wear clothes in

their daily lives.

lot of questions about nudists and
nudism, and I will find out the answers,

but now the important thing is just to
get an idea, you know, an overall

picture of what life is like here at a
naturist resort.

I'll admit that suspicion is a normal
first reaction, but there's really

nothing at all to be suspicious of. No
one's gaping at anyone else. No one's

even aware of nakedness.

It's all quite matter-of-fact and
casual.

I tell you, it's interesting, too, that
whole families participate, even kids of

all ages.

For them, it's a playground with
everything but the blue jeans and

sneakers. Same activities, the same fun.

I guess there's really a sense of
greater freedom and certainly a great

love for the outdoors, especially for
the sun.

Nudists enjoy themselves, and one thing
is certain, nudists don't spend much

time contemplating their lack of
clothing.

For the little ones, enjoyment is always
a very simple matter anywhere.

A swing, a teeter-totter, even an
imaginary game is all that's required.

And they can have just as much fun and
get into just as much trouble with or

without clothes.

I noticed too that the resort is well
equipped with games and amusements to

suit everyone's pleasure.

Of course, the pool gets most of the
crowd, just like anywhere else at

vacation time.

And like anywhere else, there's more
sitting around than swimming.

But sunbathing is obviously the most
important activity.

Many nudists, in fact, prefer to call
themselves sunbathers or naturists

rather than nudists.

Seems to make sense.

Well, for us, it was very important to
see these people exactly as they are. We

didn't want them acting for the cameras.

Fortunately, the presence of a movie
crew didn't affect them at all. Their

reaction to the camera is even better
than we'd hoped for. Very calm, very

uninhibited. And that attitude seems to
be the standard of all their behavior.

Just people, relaxing and enjoying
themselves.

Very interesting.

You know, there are resorts like this,
one in many sections of our country and

in many foreign lands.

The nudist movement, as it's called, is
quite popular in Western Europe.

In some places, an entire island or even
part of a public resort has been set

aside for sunbathers.

You know, you notice right away that
there's a sense of friendliness and

camaraderie, a spirit of belonging.

And yet, now this is important, nudism
is not some form of ritualistic and

secret activity.

And it's not restricted to a small group
of initiates.

Membership is open to anyone and guests
are always welcome.

I don't know, maybe nudity itself is the
bond of friendship among these people.

And I've noticed another thing.

Nudism has attracted people from all
walks of life.

Secretaries, doctors, writers, every
category is represented.

At every social level.

Now most of these people grew up in the
conventional surroundings of American

cities and towns. A few of them were
born in foreign lands.

But it's pretty much like any other
group in any other place in our country.

Now, some nudists are actively concerned
with the growth and promotion of the

nudist movement. Most of them are just,
well, they're interested in the

relaxation and pleasure they find in
naturist outings and vacations.

Nudist organizations such as the
American Sunbathing Association provide

the rules for operation and maintenance
of the resorts. And as you can see,

standards are high.

Now, Danny, remember, these scenes are
just as our camera crew found them.

The shots were not posed or set up.

So what you're seeing is really, exactly
just what exists.

I think it gives us a very clear idea,
an overall idea of nudist life.

And even so, I know that you've still
got a lot of questions in your mind,

probably a great deal of doubt about
these men and women and their

unconventional behavior.

I'll tell you the truth, I'm pretty
curious about a lot of things, too.

I've got a long list of questions that I
want to ask these people.

It should be very interesting to meet
them and talk with them.

They'll probably think that I'm some
kind of a nut or something.

So, that's Sonny Rest Lodge. I think
we'll have a very exciting show. It

should be fun.

he needed the money badly.

It wasn't so bad at first.

But it got worse and worse.

I didn't know what to do.

You know, you get trapped into something
and you don't know how to get out.

Then it keeps going on further and
further.

I guess I must have convinced myself
that I just didn't make any difference.

I began to get used to it.

But I also began to feel awfully funny
about Frankie.

And then one

day...

I knew I had to get out of there.

So I started looking for another job
right away.

No, I needed time to think about it.

What about last night? How did that
happen?

I don't know.

Seems like it happened to somebody else,
not me.

So I figure it this way.

I've got a body.

They can take all the pictures they want
just so long as they pay me that

drooling bums.

So I get the money and I do what I want.

And any other way of looking at it is
pretty square, sweetie.

You think I want to be a great actress?

A star, a fashion model. Oh, that's
baloney.

But I'm not disappointed.

I knew the score.

Money, and don't you forget it.

So let them take their pictures, the
filthy creeps. I could spit in their

faces. I hate them.

It's not right to hate your work like

Well, I mean when you really want
something and when you have an offer to

do something.

Because they wanted me to go to college
and all that stuff.

But there's so much more to do.

And then maybe I'll go to Hollywood
after that.

I want so much to give it.

And if these people enjoy looking at my
pictures.

wearing all those fancy costumes and

But then yesterday, well, I had my
costumes there, but

I got to thinking.

Well, I knew he was never going to throw
those pictures away, and I don't know

why, but I just wanted to get him out of
that place.

Well, maybe you really want to be a
model.

for a long time, thinking about how to
face him and get out of there quickly.

It was very late in my life.

missions now, to do my show and try to

get Danny out of her bitter and
disillusioned mood.

It's a nice drive out to Sunny Rest
Lodge, and it's a beautiful spot for

anyone's country retreat.

Danny stayed in the car just as she said
she would, and I'd begun to think about

nudists and nudist resorts, just what I
was going to talk about with these

people. Do your friends and relatives
know that you're a nudist? Sure,

everybody. I advertise it. I don't hide
it.

If I was ashamed of it, I wouldn't be a
nudist.

The campers knew that I was coming out
to do the show, and that didn't seem to

make any difference to them.

They just continued to go about doing
whatever it was that they'd be doing,

Now this, of course, is exactly what we
want, but I must admit I was surprised.

While the crew was making the final
tests and adjustments on the equipment,

I decided to have a look around and
select my interviewees.

I thought the pretty young redhead would
be very good as my first guest.

She certainly seemed very cheerful and
relaxed.

I wondered, does she have some special
reason for coming here? Does she feel

about things in a different way? How
does she feel about being a member of

this naked community?

Why is she a nudist? What is it that
leads a person to become a nudist?

Happy, healthy enjoyment of the sun. All
the words and phrases I'd spoken to

Danny kept running through my mind.

Could it be that this lovely girl had
her own unhappinesses?

Her misfortunes and troubles?

Like anyone else, just like anyone else.

But one thing for sure, these people
aren't putting on any act. They are

enjoying themselves and they do have a
pretty wholesome attitude about

themselves, about nudity.

I just wish Danny were here. If only she
could understand, if only she could

be... Unashamed.

When the idea of an interview show with
nudists first came up, I thought it was,

well, I thought it'd be pretty wild.

But now it seems like a very good idea,
one of the best suggestions we've ever

had. There are thousands of questions I
could ask.

It's natural for public interest.

Subject, nudism.

Reporters, nudists.

Their thoughts, their words.

How long have you been in this country?

Three years, about.

And were you a nudist in Germany?

Yes. Well, what's the difference between
nudism in Europe and nudism here?

Well, I would say there's a big
difference. Here you have to be a member

of a club. Over there you can practice
nudism actually anywhere.

Did you practice in Germany?

Oh, yes.

At the beaches? At the beaches, at home,
anywhere.

How about here? Do you feel at all
self-conscious when you walk around in

the nude? Not at all.

How about your boyfriends? Do they know
that you're a nudist?

Yes. What do they think about that?

Well, they had to get used to the idea
in the beginning, but if you explain

it... Well, do they think there's
something strange about nudism?

In the beginning, yes, but not anymore.

Did you ever invite any of your friends
to a nudist park?

No, I didn't.

I think if you want to come, they have
to decide themselves.

Well, how long have you been a nudist?

I've just started this year.

Well, how did you become interested
originally?

Through reading nudist magazines over a
period of years.

When you read a nudist magazine, did you
read it because you wanted to find out

about nudism or because you wanted to
see pictures of the girls?

Well, at first, I happened to see it on
the newsstand as I was coming out of

service. I was curious as to what the
magazine was about.

And I found out that they had very
excellent articles.

What kind of articles do they have?

Well, how the sun can benefit the human
body, for example.

Well, how can it?

Through rays of the sun and through
other weather conditions, bodies can

build up gradual conditioning to all
kinds of weather.

You mean that by being nude, you can be
nude in the wintertime as well and be

conditioned to it? Yes, sir.

How about you? Do you practice nudism in
the wintertime? No.

Just at the park. Have you been to other
nudist camps?

No, this is my first one.

Well, do you come here every weekend, or
do you spend a vacation here, or how

does it work?

Well, I gradually come on the spur of
the moment for the day, when the mood

strikes me.

Have you met any girls at the nudist
camp?

Well, I've met people at the nudist
camp, yes.

I mean, people in general, both men and
women, boys and girls.

Have you gone out with any of the girls?

No, I've just started.

I don't know them well enough to date.

How about your friends? Do you tell them
you're a nudist?

No.

Why not?

Well, you know how society is. Some
people may react to it okay, others may

not. Well, what do you think they might
say?

Some might give me a shocked look.

Would that bother you?

It don't bother me, but out of
consideration to them, I wouldn't want

to say anything that would offend them.

How about your relatives?

Did you tell your relatives?

No.

If you get married, would you want your
wife to be a nudist?

I would.

How about the children?

Yes. She's got good life for them. Now,
when you meet a girl at a nudist park,

do you discuss her with the other
fellas? Do you say, Mary has a nice

figure or Joan has pretty legs?

Well... I've had experience in this
nature.

There are times I was talking to a girl.

Let's say, for example, I collect coins.

She collects coins, we end up talking
about coins.

What about a figure?

What is there to talk about?

Well, she has pretty legs or a nice back
or long hair or she's overweight.

Why talk about the obvious, like hobbies
and all? That's something that's more

inward. You can learn more about the
person by talking about hobbies that you

may be interested in coming.

Well, couldn't you talk about those
hobbies even if you had a bathing suit

on?

You can, but you might not get around to
it.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is a
most unusual and fascinating afternoon.

How did you feel the first time you came
to a nudist park?

Well, it was all right on the way, but
when we arrived here, just a mile or

so away, I would have liked to turn
back.

Little boys said, I don't want to get
bad.

But they were here about five minutes,
and I didn't want to put their clothes

on again.

Do you have any interest in the nudist
movement?

Do you think everybody should be a
nudist?

No, everybody can please themselves, I
think.

How long have you been in this country?

Two months.

What kind of work do you do?

I work in Japan. And that's your
assignment here today, is it? Taking

pictures at the nudist camp? Yes.

Is this your first visit to a nudist
camp?

Yes.

What do you think?

Oh, I come back to Japan. I talk to
Japanese women. Women surprise.

Somebody help me? I think so.

You think they'll be surprised when you
come back and tell them that you went to

the nudist camp? Yes.

Did you get any good pictures today?
Yes, very good pictures.

Do you think there's anything to be
ashamed about the nudist movement or

about the human body?

Yes, human body.

No, I don't think you understood.

Is there anything ashamed about the
body? Anything wrong to take off the

clothes? Yes, take off the clothes.

Now, how long have you been a nudist?

This is the 13th year.

What made you decide to start?

Well, I picked up various nudist
publications, read them.

Curiosity more than anything else. Let
me ask you about those nudist

publications.

They look like organization newsletters,
but they are sold on newsstands, are

they not?

Some of them.

And to whom are they sold, would you
say?

Whoever... Whoever puts up the money for
them, both nudists and non-nudists.

What percentage of non-nudists would you
say? I mean, would more nudists buy them

or more non-nudists?

Well, I'm not in the publishing
business, so I wouldn't be qualified to

say, but I'd say probably half and half.
I see.

Why do nudists take so many pictures of
each other?

Don't everybody take pictures of each
other, whether they're nudists or not?

Let me ask you this. When you go to a
nudist park and you meet a girl...

Do you consciously try to avoid looking
at her body?

Or do you look at her eyes? Or do you
look at her in the same way as you would

if you met a girl on a beach, for
instance?

In a bathing suit?

I really don't know.

All over, I guess.

How about dates? Have you ever met a
girl at a nudist park and gone out with

her?

Oh.

Yes, yes, I have.

I've gone out to dinner like that.

Have you ever brought a girl who was not
a nudist to a nudist park?

No.

Have you asked one to accompany you?

I've had two or three of them come with
me, but not that I've arranged

it. I've just arranged their
transportation.

That's all.

Do you think there's anything shameful
about the human body?

No. Well, you've been to many nudist
camps for about 12 years.

Who's more shy about taking the clothes
off the first time, a man or a woman,

would you think?

Oh, I think the women.

What made you decide to become a nudist?

Well, I just decided that I needed a
place to come for relaxation and sun and

health. You know, where the atmosphere
was easy.

I ask you this question.

Do your boyfriends know that you're a
nudist?

Those that ask and those that are
interested, I tell them.

What's their reaction?

Well, they don't... Frankly, if... If I
knew a man that objected to something as

silly as that, I wouldn't go out with
him.

You know, intelligent people don't
object to these things.

Do you feel it might be possible for you
to marry somebody who wasn't interested

in nudism? Would you give it up?

Well, sadly, it's no fetish. You know.

What do you do for a living?

I'm a writer.

Have you traveled to other nudist areas?

Just a few.

But I come to this one because it's
convenient. It's near New York where I

live. Have you been to Europe?

Yes, I have.

What about nudism in Europe?

Well, I'll tell you.

There's a special place that everybody
knows about called the Isle of Levant.

It's supposed to be very beautiful and
romantic.

You haven't been there. But there's also
this. In Europe, people don't pay so

much attention to nudity as a thing to
be looked at.

Anyway, everybody changes clothes on the
public beaches and, you know, you put

your bathing suit over your bra top and
it's a little game to see that you can

get that out.

And, you know, you put little tents over
you and you undress under the little

tent. And this doesn't bother anybody.

Have you written about nudism?

Oh, no, not as nudism, no.

What made you decide to become a nudist?

I'm a figure model by profession.

And I love to be in the sun.

And I can't afford to have bathing suit
marks.

So the best thing to be is a nudist.
Well, were you at all shy when you first

came to a nudist park?

For about the first ten minutes. And
then after that, I would have felt

uncomfortable if I had had my clothes
on.

How about boyfriends? Do your boyfriends
know that you're a nudist?

Depends on how many boyfriends you want
to count.

Do you think everyone should be a
nudist?

Not necessarily.

Do your parents know that you're a
nudist? Yes.

What do they think about it?

They approve.

I've tried to talk them into being
nudists too, but they won't. Why not?

Well, it's inconvenient for them, first
of all.

They live a good distance away from any
camps.

Have you visited other camps and parks
throughout the country? Yes, I have.

People pretty much the same all over?

Yes.

People are pretty much the same all over
anyway.

What if you married and your husband had
no interest in nudism? Would you give it

up? Yes.

Have you heard of any cases where one of
the couple is interested in nudism and

continues his interest after marriage?

No, I'm not familiar with any.

Are you interested in the movement as
such?

Not really, no.

I'm interested in it as an individual.

Do you practice other than at nudist
parks?

Do I practice what?

Nudism.

No, I don't.

Do you speak in the nudes?

Yes. Do you walk around at home in the
nude? Yes.

What if somebody comes to deliver a
package?

Then I put a robe on.

That certainly figures.

Is this your first time at a nudist
camp?

No. And how long have you been coming?

Four weeks.

And did you like it the first time you
went?

Well, five minutes before I came, I
didn't like it. Then I started to feel

at ease.

Well, what about swimming when you go to
a party or something like that, a

swimming party?

I sort of wish that I were here because
then I could feel freer with the way I

act.

Well, how do you act here?

I act freer. I don't have to worry about
anything.

Well, do you have to worry about
anything when you were bathing soon?

Well, I have to make sure my straps
don't fall down and everything like

that.

Cut.

May I ask you how old are you?
Eighty-four.

Well, you look in wonderful physical
condition. Do you attribute it to

nudism? Well, I'm a hypnotist, and I
attribute it to suggestion and nudism.

What do you mean by suggestion?

The power of mind over the body.

In other words, you tell yourself that
you feel good, and you do, is that it?

That's right.

How long have you been a nudist?

I've been a nudist at the base since
1930.

That's 32 years.

That's a long time. Were you interested
in nudism before that?

Yes.

Anybody in your family interested in
nudism? No, nobody interested.

How do you feel about appearing in this
movie?

I feel for Frank to do it.

Because if I was ashamed of being a
nudist, I wouldn't be one.

I have no reason to be ashamed of my
body.

I should be proud of it.

The Bible tells you that God created man
in his own rightness. To be ashamed of

that rightness would be an insult to
him.

How about curiosity?

How about people coming in to look at
the nudists?

Well, that is a great deal of curiosity.

But people should not be curious.

The imagination is a great thing in this
world.

And when you remove an imagination, then
you've done away with all the bad parts

of the human body.

People who are accustomed to looking at
it don't think nothing about it. And one

who would look at your face or your
nose.

Well, I think we've learned a great deal
today and, well, well, I'll be.

Yeah, I think we've all learned a great
deal today about nudism and about

ourselves.

Well, Danny really surprised me. Really
surprised me. There she was, not only in

the nudist park, but acting as if she'd
been here all her life.

She'd already made a friend and was a
fascinated observer of the resort.

In fact, she was even more delighted by
our trip to Sunnyrest than I was, but of

course, I'm a professional observer.

For her, it was pure fun.

Most important of all, Danny was
relaxed.

For the first time that day, she seemed
comfortable and happy.

There was no longer a trace of the
tension and anger that had gripped her

for so long.

Frankie Terrell and that tawdry part of
the world were gone, and probably

forever.

It was a new place and a new time.

And a new Danielle.

It had been a long time since I'd seen
anyone so happy and contented, so

pleased with the rediscovery of the
outdoors, and even startled by that

fact, which for so long she'd refused to
believe.

The fact that people could leave her
alone to do what she wanted, to be what

she wanted.

The fact that people could accept her
with kindness.

and without malice.

Well, maybe she would become a model.
Maybe she'd go on to something

different. But whatever she did, it
would be different from before.

The hate and the bitterness seemed gone.

As for me, well, did I say I had two
missions on this trip?

Well, missions accomplished.

It was a good day.

though. I don't think I ever would have

had the courage to go into that nudist
camp if I hadn't been trying to help

her.
