Incredible, isn't it?

It's been over 30 years since Lost in
Space first appeared on television

screens across America.

And the adventures of the Robinson
family still retain their fascination

with audiences throughout the world.

They have served as the basis for
websites, home videos, conventions,

toys, collectibles, and even a big
budget motion picture.

But what is it about Lost in Space that
has inspired a galaxy of fans?

Well, sit back, relax, and take a trip
aboard the Jupiter II as we find out.

Lost in Space was launched in the early
1960s, an era of tail-thinned cars, TV

dinners, Barbie dolls, and hula hoops.

There were futuristic marvels of the New
York World's Fair, and the world was on

the verge of a cultural revolution
thanks to the invasion of a British

musical group called The Beatles.

It was also an era that witnessed the
dawning of the space program, one which

promised to put a man on the moon by the
end of the decade.

We choose to go to the moon in this
decade and do the other thing.

Not because they are easy, but because
they are hard.

The space program excited a whole new
generation, one that believed anything

was possible.

Young people could now imagine
themselves growing up in a world where

traveling to other planets would be as
commonplace as a trip to the corner

store.

Enter Irwin Allen, an Academy Award
winning filmmaker and veteran television

producer who delighted in taking
audiences to prehistoric worlds.

Up in the air, courtesy of a hot air
balloon.

Escape disaster by a hair's breadth.

And under the sea.

Aboard an atomic-powered submarine
called the Sea Moon. You are there when

the entire sky catches on fire. You are
there when the frogmen battle a mammoth

squid. After successfully bringing
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea to

television in 1964, Irwin Allen saw the
potential for a primetime space

adventure series.

one that would catapult audiences into
the future and beyond their wildest

imaginations. In 1965, Alan produced
this rarely seen pilot.

Ladies and gentlemen, today the first of
what may be as many as 10 million

families per year is setting out on its
epic voyage into man's newest frontier

for colonization, deep space.

Heading the expedition will be Dr. John
Robinson, professor of astrophysics at

the University of Stellar Dynamics.

With him will be his wife, Dr. Maureen
Robinson, the distinguished biochemist

of the New Mexico College of Space
Medicine.

Their daughter, Judith, age 19, who has
rather heroically postponed all hopes

for a career in the musical comedy
field.

Six minutes, 40 seconds, and holding.

Their son, Will, who recently was
graduated from the Camdo Canyon School

of Science at the age of nine, with the
highest average in the school's history.

and their daughter Penny, age 11.

Their assistant, Dr. Donald West.

Electromagnetic miracles now coming to
play.

This cosmic glow, induced by the genius
of advanced technology, will freeze the

Robinson family into a state of
suspended animation, enabling them to

make a lifetime flight while aging but a
second in the time of man.

Five, four, three, two, one.

systems here at Alpha Control are green
and go.

The trajectory now profiles properly.

The spaceship is climbing correctly to
plan.

Unless fire extinguishing apparatus
functions properly and control

regeneration occurs immediately, all
hope is now gone.

Heading the distinguished cast of actors
would be Guy Williams as Professor John

Robinson. Look at this thing.

By the day after tomorrow, the
temperature will drop 150 below zero.

What do we do?

We're going to have to head south, but
fast.

Williams was a familiar face to
television viewers, having played Zorro

for years on network television.

All right, let's go. I want us to get
out of here as quickly as we can.

The voice you hear offscreen belongs to
producer Irwin Allen.

Nice to have you with us. It's nice
being here. Want to talk a little bit

about the new show we're going to do
called Lost in Space?

Uh-huh.

Well, I saw one of those little flying
machines.

Yeah, Space Thoughts. Yeah.

I'd like to get one for myself.

Another television favorite in the cast
would be June Lockhart as Dr. Maureen

Robinson. Ms. Lockhart had previously
played everyone's favorite mom on the

classic TV series Lassie.

As the Robinson children, Judy would be
played by Marta Christen, a young

actress who had appeared on television
shows and movies.

Well, Penny, how are you ever going to
dress like a lady if you don't

hold still?

Penny would be played by Angela
Cartwright, who had literally grown up

before TV audiences in Make Room for
Daddy.

As young Will Robinson, Irwin Allen cast
Billy Moomy, one of the busiest and most

versatile child actors of the decade.

It's a city. There are no cities out
here for crying out loud.

Then what is it? Some sort of geological
accident.

How do I know? Ask Don on my field's
electronics.

Will, pardon me.

Rounding out the cast with Mark Goddard
as Robinson's pilot, Major Donald Weft.

Those big boulders didn't do the pilot
unit any good.

How long to fix? A couple hours anyway.

Although filmed in black and white, the
pilot for Lost in Space was the most

expensive ever produced up to that time.

It pitted the Robinson family against
earthquakes, floods,

one-eyed monsters,

and

other.

eerie alien.

Fortunately, the CBS network bought the
series.

They loved the program's potential for
lots of futuristic action adventure with

a broad family appeal.

But despite the show's wild premise and
spectacular effects, network executives

felt something was missing.

Something that Irwin Allen would soon
remedy with an ever-present villain in

the form of the nefarious Dr.

Zachary Smith.

and a cybernetic companion named Robot
B-9.

At exactly launch plus eight hours,
destroy.

When it premiered on September 15, 1965,
Lost in Space was heralded as a rousing

space opera.

Lost in Space was an unqualified hit,
and due in no small part to the antics

of everyone's favorite villain, Dr.

Smith, played by Jonathan Harris.

Don't trust him.

He's as slippery as a bucket of eels.

Just how can you help?

My friend here was built to test
atmospheric conditions.

I'll send him out to investigate.

And leave yourself defenseless?

The virtuous need no defense.

You need a catalyst in a show to start
things rolling, to have people fight

against.

Crow and Khan, I was the Khan.

Are you native to this speck of dust?

Oh, no, not me. You have the wrong
party.

If it's natives you're after, there's a
whole tribe of them right down there in

the valley.

The natives here are called Robinsons.

I am, how you say, well-known for my
comedic villainy aspects of my acting

nature, which I do enjoy. It's great
fun.

And I said, well, willy-nilly, I'll be
out of the show in five shots anyway.

I'm going to try sneaking in my old bits
and see what happens.

One, two, three, four. One, two, three,
four. Put a bit more snap in there, will

you?

Excuse me, Mr. Larroquette, but you are
forgetting someone.

Ah, hello, robot. I was just telling
everyone about Dr. Smith.

Yes, I know. But I think your viewers
would rather hear about the other

components in Lost in Space's success.

Other components?

Yes. Like me, for instance.

The robot on Lost in Space was the
Robinson family's mechanical man Friday,

capable of everything from soil sampling
to lifting heavy objects,

and fending off enemies.

The robot was, at times, just as human
as his flesh and blood co-stars.

There's no place like home.

No one requires my services anymore.

An astute observation.

You, sir, have reached the end of the
line. The joyride is over.

I had planned to redesign you possibly
into a pleasure vehicle, but I think you

would be substandard even as that.

What is my course of action?

A quick departure seems a very good
choice.

Are you sure there is no other solution?

None whatsoever, goodbye.

Of course, the robot's human qualities
came naturally thanks to the man inside

him, actor Bob May.

I was a little too big for it, but I
squeezed in knowing that thousands of

actors wanting a job like this, and I
spent three years in the bucket.

I'm very happy about it. Bob utilized
years of stage training to give the

robot a very unique personality.

Equally distinctive was the voice of the
robot, provided by veteran radio and

television announcer Dick Tufeld. You
may apply more effort, Dr. Smith.

My skin is not sensitive.

That's what you say.

And do not miss any spots.

If it is worth doing, it is worth doing
well.

I get calls from all over the country
from people wanting me to do things like

do the robot voice for their answering
machine.

Warning! Warning! Warning!

Warning! It will not compute!

Warning! Warning!

Warning! Danger, Will Robinson!

Feel better now, robot?

Yes, thank you. My sensors are deeply
grateful.

May I continue?

Affirmative.

Of course, there were other reasons for
Lost in Space's impressive success in

its debut season.

There were dazzling special effects.

An impressive array of guest stars.

Oh, Hapgood's my name, boys. Jimmy
Hapgood.

I will introduce myself. I am known as
the Keeper, and I come from a world 10

million light years away.

I am called Quanto.

I am 12 years old.

Fierce-looking alien monsters.

And even a pet bloop, who looks
suspiciously like a chimpanzee in a

furry hat.

Oh, he's darling. May I have him?

I'm going to call you Debbie.

It wasn't one of those cuddly little
monkeys, you know. And I love animals.

He was just really kind of, I think it
was the hat he had to wear. He had to

wear a blue hat.

And it was stiff, and he had the big
ears that, you know, were attached to

it. No monkey likes to wear a hat.

The theme music for Lost in Space was
composed and conducted by the

incomparable John Williams, known then
as Johnny Williams.

Mr. Williams went on to provide the
scores for dozens of blockbuster motion

pictures like Jaws, Star Wars, and
Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Of course, much of Lost in Space's broad
appeal also came from its incorporation

of traditional family values in a very
untraditional setting.

I'll dig into the last of our flour and
make us some hot biscuits.

John Robinson was the leader of the
expedition and protector of his family.

Unidentified object in front of you.

Worried about Dr. Smith?

Are you sure he'll be all right, sir?
Oh, he's probably fast asleep right now.

Which is where you should be.

A pacifist by nature.

He could always hold his own in a fair
fight.

Ma Marine was adept at everything from
working high-tech appliances to packing

a pretty mean space pistol.

I must say, a lot of people do talk to
me about the laundry, though, in which

you put all the dirty clothes in one
side, push it, wait 30 seconds, and then

it all comes up, not only clean, ironed,
wrapped in cellophane, but already, you

know, packaged and ready to go. That was
a good stunt.

Romance on the show was pretty limited.

Limited, that is, to Don and Judy. Judy
and Don, everyone asks me, why didn't

they make more of them?

Their relationship. The problem was that
it was a children's show, and Irwin

said, nobody kisses, nobody touches.

Is that your will?

Hand me a power wrench, will you?

Why don't you come out and get it, Don?

Oh!

I mean, wow.

I kind of came in thinking I was going
to have a relationship with Judy,

basically.

and crashed the spaceship every week,
you know. And I crashed the spaceship

every week, but I never really had
anything with Judy.

But it was kids who formed Lost in
Space's core audience.

And for them, there were no better role
models than Penny and Will.

Will Robinson is a character I'm happy
to be associated with because he was

smart, he was brave, he was this
formidable guy who was, you know, taking

care of business.

It was like a comic book.

It was my opportunity to kind of be in
an adventure, high-tech sci-fi project

where I could almost be like a
superhero.

In 1966, the Robinson family continued
to brave the elements and battle hostile

aliens.

But now they faced another enemy, one
even more life-threatening.

Batman had slid down the Batpole and
onto television screens earlier that

year, and was on right opposite Lost in
Space.

Batmania spread like wildfire across the
airwaves, and even Will Robinson was not

immune to its campy charm.

Not to be outdone, Lost in Space began
its second season in color.

For the first time, television audiences
could gaze upon purple rocks, green

skies, and the yellow streak down Dr.
Smith's back.

The special effects were more
spectacular, even if the aliens were

often less than convincing.

In my world, I am considered handsome.

As if to compete with Batman's
outlandish storylines, Lost in Space

became more colorful.

And more campy than ever before.

Gonna jump down, turn around, pick the
golden nugget. Gonna jump down, turn

around, pick and go all day. Now the
adventures of Dr. Smith, the robot, and

Will began taking center stage.

Observe.

Dr. Smith!

The strategy worked. Lost in Space
regularly beat Batman to the ring's

punch. I know you like a big brother.

Do you indeed?

Example. Who chickens out when all hands
are needed?

Example. Who sneaks food when all
personnel are on short rations?

Example who?

The robot was one of the happiest things
that ever happened to me in my

theatrical career, I will tell you. The
robot became a very integral part of the

show. I decided he was my alter ego and
he was wise to me and a danger to me.

Always calling in those dreadful
alliteratives to keep him down.

So he wouldn't expose me.

You computerized clown.

Bobble-headed booby.

Jabbering Judas.

Bumbling birdbrain.

Neanderthal mini.

Tackling cars.

Mental midget.

Flivering bumpkin.

Tackling cacophony comes to mind. Oh,
that was a good one.

Lots of space merchandise also became
popular.

There were lunchboxes, laser rifles,
model kits, even a battery-powered toy

robot. Dozens of these toy robots even
made a guest appearance in an episode

called The Mechanical Men. The
Mechanical Men!

Who is the leader here?

Lost in Space was now not only popular,
it was hip.

Series cast members were in demand for
personal appearances.

The set was a magnet for visiting
dignitaries and just about every kid in

the world.

Even Mad Magazine got into the act with
an outrageous parody illustrated by the

great Mort Drucker.

The cast responded to Drucker's dead-on
caricatures by posing for these gag

photos, which they sent to Mad with
their thanks.

Well, how does it feel to be a cultural
icon, robot?

Feels like I should have asked for a
raise 30 years ago.

Well, come on now. What kind of money
could a robot need?

Have you seen the price of an oil change
lately?

Somehow a squeaky robot always gets the
grease.

Oh, the pain.

Indeed.

Lost in Space Forever will return in a
moment.

Check the temperature.

Lost in Space began its third season
with a dynamic new opening title

sequence and an exciting new theme song
courtesy of John Williams.

As if in response to the show's many
fans and critics, producer Irwin Allen

ordered the show to have an all-new look
and a whole new style.

There would be more stories involving
space travel, giving the Robinsons more

planets to explore.

Dr. Smith, you stay right where you are.

Not to mention more opportunities to
wear those cool silver spacesuits.

There would also be more emphasis on the
family as a whole, something the cast

members were very much in favor of. Oh,
good. Come on, kids, you're just in

time. I've got some cookies and milk
here for you.

In the first episode of the season, the
Robinsons found themselves stranded

aboard a prison ship.

One whose inmates were literally frozen
in time.

What possible harm could there be in a
man who plays Cat's Cradle?

By the way, you might recognize the
robot prison guard.

It's Robbie the Robot from the classic
science fiction film Forbidden Planet.

He was created by Bob Kinoshita, the man
responsible for designing the robot from

Lost in Space. No! No!

He's going to freeze me!

What is he doing?

His sensors indicate that there is only
one unrehabilitated criminal type left,

and that is you.

Exchange him.

Make him let me go!

What is he saying?

He said you will be back.

They all come back.

Robbie is perhaps the most famous robot
in the history of science fiction.

What's the matter, robot?

Jealous? I am not programmed for
jealousy.

All right. Resentment, yes.

Hatred, yes. But jealousy?

No.

Lost in Space's third season also saw
the introduction of the Space Pod.

a compact shuttlecraft that could be
used to scout potentially hostile

planets. The space pod and all the
special effects on Lost in Space were

the work of L.B. Abbott, one of the best
in the business.

Working with a limited budget, he and
his talented team could make everything

seem possible.

Well, maybe not everything.

These rarely seen outtakes show just how
difficult it was to get an effect shot

Just right.

That's it.

Easy does it.

Oops. The Jupiter II also had more to do
in the series' third season.

It was often seen landing, and taking
off, and landing again.

One of the places it landed was back on
Earth in visit to a hostile planet.

Believe it or not, this full-sized
mock-up of the Jupiter II was only used

in two episodes.

I can smell pine and fresh water.

Do you feel cold?

Just, just happy.

Earth, sweet Earth, how lovely.

I don't know, I've seen pictures of
people using them, but I don't know if

this will work.

This was a big moment for Lost in Space
fans.

Hello?

Hello, this is Maureen Robinson from the
Jupiter II.

Do you read me? At last, the Robinsons
had finally made it back to Earth.

You ever see one of those?

Unfortunately, it was Earth in 1947.

Don't come no closer or I'll shoot.

I suggest we leave. before those jokers
really get me riled up.

1967 was the age of Aquarius, and Lost
in Space followed suit.

The cast was given stylish new uniforms
with the help of costume designer Paul

Zastrupnevich. And the series' writers
let their imaginations run wild, penning

episodes that were more space-idyllic
than ever before.

You dig that sound, Will?

No, not exactly.

The Robinsons encountered space hippies.

in the promised planet.

Even Dr. Smith and Penny donned love
beads and got in the groove.

I'm way out, man, like the rest of you
cats.

Hey, man, you're really gross.

Of course, Lost in Space continued to
feature lots of gadgets, explosions,

nail

-biting suspense,

And monsters.

Lots and lots of monsters.

So many monsters, in fact, that some
were recycled from earlier episodes.

Good evening.

A few were even recycled from other
movies.

Recognize this alien makeup from
Fugitives in Space?

It was taken off the original molds used
for Planet of the Apes.

Of course, the reason for the similarity
is simple.

The makeup for the Planet of the Apes
was designed by the great John Chambers,

who also doubled as one of the chief
makeup artists on Lost in Space.

Chambers was a master at creating latex
appliances, as he did in this episode

where 13-year-old Bill Mooney has to
play the part of a pint-sized Dr. Smith.

I will conquer the universe.

Oh, please.

Please, let's be chums again.

No.

No! No!

Of course, not all of the alien designs
were so sophisticated.

Some were downright silly.

Perhaps not so much as the ones featured
in the most infamous Lost in Space

episode ever filmed.

The Great Vegetable. Vegetable.
Vegetable. The Great Vegetable

Rebellion. The Great Vegetable
Rebellion.

I witnessed your crime.

A life for a life.

Named by TV Guide as one of the hundred
most memorable television episodes of

all time, The Great Vegetable Rebellion
stands as the most bizarre of the entire

series.

I hate the great vegetable rebellion,
you know, with the talking carrot,

Taibo, the talking carrot. We had to
stand and talk to this vegetable for

like six days.

Such a healthy-looking stalk of celery.

That was written by Peter Packer, and I
remember he came to my dressing room

with a script behind his back.

And I said, give me a script. She says,
you're going to hate it. Will you kindly

tell this creature to stop nibbling at
me? It jars me to my very roots.

Willoughby, you're going to have to stop
nibbling on Dr. Smith.

I said, we've got to do it. He said, I
don't have another idea in my head.

Moisture!

Moisture! I need moisture!

That's right. You know, talk to a
carrot. You'd never talk to a carrot.

If you'd watch the shows carefully, a
lot of times you'll see me kind of just

break up. You've seen one tree, you've
seen them all.

Guy and I and Mark and Angela were doing
a scene and Guy was hacking at plants.

And every time he hacked at a plant, the
script supervisor would go, oh!

And we started giggling because of our
lack of discipline for punishment.

Irwin wrote Guy and Me out of the next
two episodes.

At full salary.

Over here.

Of course, not all of Lost in Space's
third season episodes were silly.

One of the very best was this one, The
Anti-Matter Man, featuring Guy Williams

and Mark Goddard in challenging dual
roles.

Yes, we are alike, aren't we? Who are
you?

I'm Professor John Robinson.

Everyone knows that.

I am sorry for you.

Don't be.

If it weren't for me, you couldn't be
you.

Go on, scram, beat it.

Oh, by the way, in that episode, you
also had an evil twin. Whatever happened

to him?

He appears on cruise ships during the
Macarena, I believe.

Unfortunately, the Robinsons weren't so
lucky.

After three seasons of visiting strange
planets and encountering stranger

aliens, the crew of the Jupiter II never
did get back home.

Citing escalating production costs and
declining ratings, the show was canceled

by CBS in April 1968.

Lost in Space, the series, had ended,
but Lost in Space, the phenomenon, was

just getting started.

In 1973, Lost in Space returned to
television in the form of an animated

cartoon. The space shuttle Jupiter II is
under command of Craig Robinson.

Meet me right here.

Produced for 20th Century Fox, it was
featured as one of a series of Saturday

morning specials on the ABC network.

But although Jonathan Harris reprised
his role as the cunning Dr.

Smith... I protest this outrage,
Commander. I wish to bring charges

against this clanking plot.

There was almost nothing recognizable
from the original series.

You hit the negative one. He's not
affected.

Now I know which is positive.

It had no point. The characters were
awful.

The writing was dreadful. And that was
the end of that.

Needless to say, nothing became of it.

Since 1968, Each of the original Lost in
Space cast members were living their

separate lives and enjoying separate
careers.

June Lockhart continued to appear in
television shows like General Hospital.

Marta Kristen and Mark Goddard each
appeared in numerous stage and

television productions.

Bill Mooney continued acting in movies
and television and also became a

successful musician. As one half of the
musical duo called Barnes and Barnes, he

wrote and performed the cult classic,
Tick Head.

Angela Cartwright opened a boutique and
pursued her love of photography.

Guy Williams, still revered as Zorro in
Latin America, retired to Argentina.

And Jonathan Harris made guest
appearances on classic television series

like Irwin Allen's Land of the Giants.

By now, Lost in Space was seen all over
the world, but only in reruns.

Unfortunately, the episodes were often
heavily cut, a program to run at odd

times of the day.

Toy licensing and merchandising had
stopped, and the robot here was put into

dead storage.

You are forgetting my numerous guest
appearances, my charitable works, the

fact that Erwin had plans to give me my
own sitcom, Rodney the Robot, a cross

between Freeze Company and my mother the
car.

Right. Well, in any event, Lost in Space
was becoming a fading memory. And

science fiction on television had become
pretty much a thing of the past.

That is, until... Star Wars.

Produced and directed by George Lucas
and released by 20th Century Fox in

1977, Star Wars created a science
fiction explosion.

Almost overnight, Hollywood producers
began developing all new versions of

classic science fantasy ideas.

Even Star Trek.

often considered Lost in Space's chief
rival, enjoyed new popularity, courtesy

of a series of big-budget feature films.

A big-screen version of Lost in Space
now seemed inevitable, and fans began

writing petitions and sending storylines
to Irwin Allen.

Unfortunately, most studio executives
didn't see the potential, and wherever

he went with the idea, Irwin Allen was
turned down.

In 1983, the television game show Family
Feud reunited original Lost in Space

cast members and pitted them against the
cast of Batman.

Lost in Space won.

In 1991, Bill Mooney made a guest
appearance on a dating show called

Studs. Well, I've been lost in space for
28 years. I still haven't had a date.

And even the robot got into the act as a
cybernetic sidekick.

Wade says Wade.

Ladies.

Way to go!

By the 1990s, fan clubs, websites, and
books were popping up around the world,

especially in Australia, where Lost in
Space enjoyed an unprecedented 20-year

run in prime time.

Ladies and gentlemen, presenting for the
first time in Australia, and after 30

years of being lost in space, would you
please welcome the one and certainly the

only Dr.

Zachary Smith.

Never appears, myth is here.

There was even a 25th anniversary
convention in Boston, where the cast was

greeted by more than 30,000 fans.

Thank you so much for coming to see us.

By the middle of the decade, just about
everyone associated with Lost in Space

was in big demand for autograph signing
and personal appearances.

There was also an all-new Lost in Space
comic book, written and supervised by

Bill Mooney.

But with the untimely deaths of Guy
Williams in 1989 and Irwin Allen in

1991, many fans began to lose hope that
their dream of a big-budget, lost-in

-space movie would ever become a
reality.

And even though the original series
remained popular, it was beginning to

look like the Robinson family would
never find their way back home.

In 1996, after years of anticipation,
New Line Cinema, along with Prelude

Pictures and Space Productions, Announce
plans to bring Lost in Space to the big

screen.

It would feature state-of-the-art
special effects.

Destroy Robinson family.

And include an all-star cast.

William Hurt as Professor John Robinson.

He is betting everything, lifting
everything, to save his family. And not

just save his family, but by that to
save the extended family of man.

Mimi Rogers as Maureen.

Well, they're not a normal family
because they're all geniuses, let's face

it. And they are going on a rather
extraordinary mission together.
