The dry season is taking hold.

And in this heat, it's a struggle to catch anything.

The brothers are no closer

to being able to provide for themselves.

As the season changes,

the older brothers have changed, too.

Djodjo and Ukingo are now mighty 300-pound males.

Childhood games now turn to sparring matches.

Young males must learn to become fighters...

...and hunters.

Kio is now 18 months old.

And he's keen to put his skills to the test.

[squeal]

This warthog is just too fast.

But Kio's hunting instincts are growing.

And there are plenty more chances on the way.

[grunt]

With the arrival of the wet season,

the plains transform and the herds return.

[braying]

[panting]

It's time for Summer to teach them all how it's done.

♪ ♪

A lone buffalo.

[insects buzzing]

[grunting]

Lesson one, stealth.

Lesson two, patience.

Lesson three,

become invisible.

Now with the buffalo on the run,

it's time for the brothers to try for themselves.

One by one, they each make their move.

They just don't have the strength on their own,

even Ukingo.

They need to work as a team.

♪ ♪

It's not enough.

They still need Summer.

But with every hunt comes risk.

♪ ♪

[calling]

Summer is down.

All Kio can do is offer her comfort...

...and support his brave mother.

But she is 16 years old.

And no longer the force she once was.

Over the coming days,

Summer slowly regains what strength she can.

She's not going to give up now.

These are not the wild herds she knows.

a dangerous move.

But her family needs to eat,

and just one cow would feed them all.

...under the cover of darkness.

His mother should be back by now.

But there's no sign.

Trying to provide for Kio and his brothers,

she died by the thrust of a spear.

The sun has set on Summer's time.

She takes her place

amongst the great lion queens of the past.

But has she done enough

they have claimed on their own.

Kio has met this gang of thieves before,

although never without his mother by his side.

Retreat would mean the loss of a meal.

A victory would show they are a force to be reckoned with.

He leads the brotherhood,

to drive the hyenas away.
