- Please heed my call!

Please heed my call!

Please heed my call!

Please heed my call!

Please heed my call!

Please heed my call!

- What are you doing here?

- It's been a long time.

- I have severed our relationship.

- You may think so, but I have not severed it yet.

- Who told you about this place?

- I have not heard from anybody.

- How did you find out?

- Since last summer, I've been looking for you all over the capital city.

I've been searching not only within the city,

but also every possible place near the city.

I ran out of places to search, and then finally I got here.

- I escaped because of your persistence.

- No matter how much you dislike me, you are still my master.

- I was living in peace here,

but your voice reminds me of the disgusting city.

Go back!

- Are you with her?

- Of course I am. I cannot live in this remote area alone!

- I came here because I wanted to talk to her.

- Go back! Nobody wants to talk to you!

I gave up you, my house and everything in the world!

- Since you left,

your father passed away,

our clan has broken up and everyone has gone their own ways.

- Stop it!

You are whining to get my attention.

- I am not whining.

I am only telling the truth.

- Go back! Go back!

- I am not leaving until I see her.

- If you are here for me, please come this way.

- Aizen, leave this woman alone!

- I am Aizen.

- My name is Kaede.

- Very well. Let's talk it out.

- Please make yourself at home.

I cannot offer much of hospitality as we live in this abandoned temple,

but we have plenty of firewood.

I did not want to be in such remote mountains,

but Taro-dono took me and forced me to live here.

- Aizen, you are the one who did not want to be in the war-ravaged city.

- For this past year, I have hardly seen any humans.

The only living things I saw were foxes, badgers, wild boars, and monkeys.

The only human around is Taro-dono.

When I sleep and when I awaken, there are only two of us.

Now I am missing life in the capital.

- I never miss that murderous city.

- In the capital,

are the forces of the Northern and Southern Emperors still at war?

- Yes.

- Taro-dono, we need more firewood.

You must be holding a grudge against me.

- Yes. Indeed, I hold a grudge against you.

- But, you can do nothing about it,

because Taro-dono says that he loves me, Aizen, more than you.

Isn't that right, Taro-dono?

- I love Aizen more than you!

I am an honest man so I stay with the one I love.

What's wrong with that?

- You are being deceived by this woman.

- I deceived Taro-dono?

- I am not being deceived by anyone.

- You will know it soon.

- Do you say such things because of my lowly upbringing?

- We love each other!

You should see that by us living together like this.

- Aizen-dono, you took Taro-dono away from me.

- I was not taken! I took Aizen!

- See, see. Taro-dono just said it clearly.

- If you want to take a man, you do not need to take a man who has a wife.

There must be plenty of men around.

- If you want to take Taro away, that is perfectly all right with me.

Please take his hand and go away any time you wish.

- Yes, I will for sure sometime.

- Kaede!

You still think that I'll go back with you?

My woman is Aizen!

I am living here with her.

I don't want you!

- Let's stay at this temple tonight.

And we will leave for Yoshino tomorrow morning.

- Yes, we need to treat injuries also.

- No one can enter here!

- What are you going to do if Taro is killed?

- How about you?

- If Taro is killed, I will probably shed my tears.

- I will die with Taro-dono.

- Really?

This one seems tough.

- Taro-dono will win.

- You are so confident.

- I am his wife. I know him very well.

- Your visit invigorated my life.

He is marvelous tonight.

- Did you see that?

Stop it!

- Taro-dono.

I am cold. Where is the firewood?

I won't forgive you for not treating me well while you just drink sak.

- Why don't you drink? There's more.

- I can't be drinking sak all day.

Oh! My body aches!

This place is suffocating me.

- Spring will be here soon.

- Burn more firewood! There's not enough firewood!

- Kaede, please go get some firewood on the mountain.

Can't you hear me?

- Yes, I can hear you.

- Go get the firewood on the mountain.

- No, I am not going.

- Go!

- You should make Aizen go.

I will not go get firewood to warm that woman.

- Why are you still here?

- I am going to take you back from Aizen.

- Give it up.

You saw with your own eyes how Aizen and I have been living the last half year.

That's enough annoyance... - Taro-dono...

You were young lord of the ruling family in Oenosho in the province of Tanba.

Aren't you ashamed to be controlled by such a lowly woman?

- That's just a thing of the past.

It collapsed because of the judicial officer's unreasonable taxation and peasants' rioting.

- If you did not go to Kyoto, you would have never met Aizen.

- Taro! Taro!

- The woman is calling you.

You'd better go and massage her hips and legs.

- Shut up! Get out of here today!

- I am not going anywhere.

- Why are you clinging to a man who does not have any feelings for you?

- Where is the meal?

- It's been being prepared.

- I want to eat some meat, birds or fish.

- Hey, hurry up the cooking!

- There is nothing to eat.

- We had dried potatoes and we also had dried fish!

- I ate them all.

- What? You ate them all?!

- I would never starve for Aizen's benefit.

- What are you cooking now?

- I am cooking some radish now.

The woman probably doesn't like the taste.

We have no salt, no miso. We have nothing.

- Aizen, I am leaving for the city.

- For what?

- To go steal food for you.

- That is a good idea!

- Keep yourself warm with this and wait!

- Is anyone here?

Is anyone here?

Is anyone here?

Hello! Is anyone here?

Is anyone here?

- Who are you?

- I am a traveling priest headed for Koya.

I am having a difficult time. May I stay here tonight?

- I see you are in a predicament.

But this is just a shabby abandoned temple.

- All I ask is to let me stay just one night in any room.

- I am sorry but my husband is away and I don't know when he will be back...

- That is a problem.

- Why are you here though you are headed for Koya?

- People living in remote mountain areas are not aware of the current situation.

Many places below the mountain are burning.

Kyoto and Yoshino have started fighting.

That is why I chose the mountain route to avoid them.

If your master is not present,

I should not be inside, but may I just rest under the eaves for shelter?

- Although it is spring below the mountain, it is still winter here.

You will freeze in the early morning.

- No, no. I don't mind about freezing mornings or snowy nights.

I would be happy if I could rest my tired back and legs.

- Honored priest, which temple in Koya are you headed for?

- I am the head priest of Ichijo-in in Koya.

- Oh! You are the high priest of the Ichijo-in!

- Since last fall I have been traveling along the

Kyoto and Yamato route to spread the Buddha's teaching.

But since I have been away for so long, I decided to come back for once.

- Not knowing you are the high priest, please excuse my impoliteness.

Although I can't offer you to stay overnight,

please come inside to warm up and rest.

- Please come here, it is the warmest here.

- Thank you.

This temple must belong to the Shingon Sect.

I would like to pay a visit to the room with the Buddha statue.

- Heike soldiers burnt this temple and the statue of Buddha is no longer here.

- Oh. I see...

- I wish I could entertain you better,

but I have nothing here except for smelly things.

- No, need. Hot water is the best treat.

Thank you.

- Here are some dried chestnuts. I hope you like them.

- I am grateful.

There is nothing that is not welcome to the palate of a traveling priest.

- More hot water?

- Yes, please.

How long have you been here?

- It's been a long time.

My house in the city was burnt in repeated wars,

after that we roamed through unfamiliar domains,

and then we moved into this abandoned temple.

This spring,

it has been 3 years since we moved here.

- There seem to be other reasons.

- My husband used to be

the head of a prominent ruling family in Oenosho in the province of Tanba.

But after the land was taken away, he went to Kyoto

where he became an assistant to a nobleman in Sanjo Horikawa district.

Heike soldiers burnt his house also and the nobleman went missing.

- That is too bad.

And what is your husband doing now?

- There is no work in a remote mountain like this.

He just hunts for birds and beasts to eat or sell.

We just live day by day.

- I see.

As I travel around the country,

I've seen that the war has ravaged precious Buddhist treasures and people's houses.

The city is turning into a waste land.

In such turbulent time,

living in a remote area away from the city must be more peaceful.

Is your husband hunting today?

- Yes.

- What's the matter?

- Yes, he leaves early in the morning and comes home late every night.

He not only hunts for birds and beasts.

Please look at these!

Swords trimmed with gold, armor, helmets, and various accessories.

These are what my husband stole in the nearby villages.

- Is that true?

- I am afraid of the punishment by Buddha for lying to a priest.

High priest,

my husband is now a terrible thief called "Mumyo no Taro."

He ambushes people at night to take their lives and possessions.

If any traveler asks for a place to stay overnight, they are most likely be killed.

That is why I cannot let you stay here tonight.

Even priests are not safe.

So you'd better leave now before he comes back.

- This must be some sort of fate that I happened to visit here tonight.

Please let me meet with Taro as I feel compelled to see him.

In traveling around the country,

I sometimes ran into bandits, and rogue samurai have threatened me.

I've also faced the danger of hostile swords numerous times.

But on many occasions,

those encounters have led me to an opportunity to teach Buddha's words.

As every man possesses the Buddha's mind,

I would like to communicate that directly to him if that is possible.

Your husband is surely not a devil.

- Yes... Thank you!

My husband used to be a reasonable man a long time ago.

He is not a devil or a snake.

But as a matter of fact, there really is a devil.

- What do you mean by that?

- Now that devil is sleeping in the main chamber.

- You are puzzling me.

- If that is not a devil, what is it?

My husband started to steal and kill because of that devil.

If my husband has human emotions,

even the humble living is not so painful.

But what is the meaning of my life

after my husband is stolen by that woman and I am made a thief's helper?

Please look at these.

It is also my duty to prepare food for them.

I am just their servant.

There is not any time for my tears to dry.

- Since when has the woman you call a devil been staying here?

- It was a snowy night last winter.

She was running away from the war and came to seek lodging for the night.

I felt sorry for her as she begged with her hands clasped together,

looking so helpless.

- So she is a lady from the city?

- No, she was a prostitute from a lowly background.

That woman is a devil.

After she seduced my husband,

she made him commit murders so she can have a luxurious living.

She is a devil!

- All men are harassed by earthly desires.

But sooner or later, he will be awakened by the sense of repentance

and start longing to achieve deliverance from earthly bondage.

Your husband will also be awakened from the dream of confusion.

There always is Buddha's divine protection even in the corrupt age.

- High priest,

please awake my husband from this dream of confusion.

- You also have an obsessive doubt in your mind.

You are tormenting yourself with jealousy all day long, aren't you?

You called a person a devil.

A devil exists in your own mind.

- So you are saying that the woman is not a devil,

but it is me who is a devil?

- Everyone possesses a devil in their own mind.

Anybody will become a devil, if he gets the wrong mind.

- I am not a devil.

That woman is the devil!

- Why can't you understand?

- High priest, please forgive me.

I am a sinful woman.

Please chase the devil in my mind away with your divine power!

Please guide me to the path to heaven!

- You understood.

I accept your excellent request.

I am ashamed to confess, but a long time ago I was also tormented by a devil.

I was burnt in the flame of earthly desires.

Until I could sever the bondage with prayer and the mercy of Buddha,

I was in unspeakable agony.

Now my spirit is solid and stronger than any metal.

Since you are not giving up your earthly life,

it is impossible to dedicate your whole life to the teaching of Buddha.

However if you keep following Buddha's teaching,

you will be granted the life in heaven.

- Even someone like me can be saved?

- Of course!

Having belief is the most important.

I have something great here.

This is a very precious written sutra.

I will give you this sutra.

You should read this every morning and evening.

- If I do as you say, will it get rid of the devil in my mind?

- Surely.

- And my husband's mind, too?

- Surely.

- Thank you very much.

What are you doing?

- Hey priest! Are you done with all the nonsense?

- Who are you?

- You must be a fool not to know the face of Mumyo no Taro!

The bag hanging from your neck must contain something other than sutras.

I will see what is inside.

- You must not touch this bag!

- It must contain something valuable.

- Taro-dono, this man is the high priest of Koya.

You will have divine punishment if you behave badly...

- Priest! Give me the bag!

- You must not touch this bag!

Something bad will happen to you.

- Stealing is my profession. So I take other people's possessions.

- I have a precious statue of Buddha in this bag.

- Is the statue made of wood? ...or gold? ...or bronze?

- It is a small beautiful gold statue.

- Priests are honest.

Knowing it's a gold statue, I must have it.

Give it to me if you want to live.

- What will you do if I refuse?

- I will just take it by force.

- Taro-dono, are you going to turn against a holy high priest?

High priest has the power to...

- The power? That makes me laugh!

This shabby priest should not have such power.

If you have the power, show me!

Very well... I am going to kill you!

What was that?

- Taro-dono, did you witness the image of Buddha?

You won't attack anymore, will you?

- High priest...

It's been a long time.

- Oh! Aizen!

- You recognized me.

- High priest, you know Aizen?

- Yes, I know her.

But it was in the days of dreams a long time ago.

- Yes, it was a long time ago, in the days of dreams.

I knew him as a young noble officer then,

but now he is a holy priest.

High priest, please forgive the sins I committed in those days.

- No, no. Because of you, I entered into the way of Buddha.

You guided me to the Buddha's teaching.

- Thank you for your kind words. After seeing the power of Buddha,

I regret my past sins and fear for my next life.

High priest,

please have mercy on me for still being agonized by female lust.

- You explained yourself very well, Aizen-dono.

This must be Buddha's will that we reunite here.

I am going to teach you the joy of Buddhism tonight.

- That is a great honor! Thank you very much, high priest!

- High priest, please teach Aizen-dono the way of Buddha.

This room is not proper for that, so please move to the main chamber.

- It is not very nice, but please come to the room, high priest.

- I will guide you to the room.

- To talk about Buddhist's teaching, locations do not matter,

but if you insist.

- Aizen...

What are you going to do to the high priest in the main chamber?

- I am taking revenge for you.

- Revenge?

- Do you still believe the divine power?

- The white flash surely came out of the Buddha's statue.

- This time I will show you the divine power of Aizen.

Well then...

I will hear the invaluable lecture by the high priest.

- Taro-dono, why don't you sit down?

- High priest, you have not changed at all since then.

- No, no. Both my mind and looks have changed.

As you can see, my head is shaved and my hands and feet are as strong as a farmer's.

- When you were a young noble officer,

you had a gentle face almost like a girl.

But I like high priest now better than before.

You are so manly.

- You shouldn't kid a man who is serving Buddha.

- It was a night in spring,

when you came to visit me for the first time at my house in Kamo.

- Aizen-dono, for a priest who entered Buddha's way and left the earthly world,

a thing of the past is just a dream.

- It was a night with a beautiful moon.

Officer Fujiwara was...

- Aizen-dono!

- With a single brilliant stroke of your sword...

- At that time I was in the hell of earthly desires.

I was a devil.

I was a despicable beast that wanted to keep Aizen only for myself.

The man's death scream awakened me from the dream.

Then I severed the bondage of earthly desires.

- High priest might have severed the bondage of earthly desires,

but I have sunk to the depth of earthly desires.

- Since I've wanted to serve you with delicious sak,

I made this with utmost care.

Please have some.

Please.

This mackerel looks delicious.

The thrush is ready.

You love eating thrush. I caught it on the mountain.

Please.

I would like to have a cup of sak also.

It's been a long time since you and I last sat together like this.

- What are the priest and Aizen doing?

It has been a while.

- High priest must be giving a valuable lecture.

After listening to the high priest teaching,

she will have repentance for her sins and become a better person.

- What does Aizen need to repent for?

- Please have another cup.

- What is wrong with me?

After seeing the light, my head is numb!

- That's the proof that Buddha had entered into your mind.

- Aizen-dono, your way of living is not the right way.

Buddha teaches that you must not steal,

you must not agonize others, and you must not hold evil thoughts to others.

- High priest, then what can I do to return to the right way?

- Give Taro-dono back to Kaede-dono.

- Taro-dono is not giving me up.

- That is the sin that made you fall into the hell of earthly desires.

Sever the bondage of earthly desires.

- But high priest, I just can't live alone.

If I sleep alone for 3 nights, I get too lonesome and anxious.

I need to sleep with men.

Every living person is just like me, isn't that right?

- That is the proof that you are in the hell of earthly desires.

- High priest, don't you miss women?

- I don't miss them!

- Even if I am in the hell of earthly desires,

I want to enjoy every possible human pleasure.

To commemorate this evening, please have a cup of sak with me.

- I do not drink alcohol.

- High priest, please consider the wish

of this poor woman who is begging to be saved by your valuable teaching.

- No. As I am serving Buddha, I want to refrain from drinking sak.

- If you put yourself above ordinary people by refraining from drinking and sex

how can you understand and save those people?

Please, high priest. I am so happy to see you.

This is a sinful woman's good will.

Please think this as Buddha's mercy and accept it.

- Taro-dono, where are you going?

If you interrupt high priest's valuable lecture, you will get divine punishment.

- Mumyo no Taro is the toughest bandit in the universe!

I have nothing to fear!

- After experiencing the divine power,

you are still not awakened from your dream?

Were you not blinded by the light from the Buddha statue?

Please sit down!

Taro-dono, eat another mountain bird.

- If Aizen seduces him with her charm, the priest will fall to hell.

- What did you say?

- Aizen will take my revenge.

- You two are horrible people!

- If the priest is defeated by Aizen's charms... he is good-for-nothing.

- The high priest will never be seduced.

Aizen-dono will be the one that is defeated.

- Please drink it.

Drink up.

Please have another. - No, that is enough.

Enough.

How long has it been since I had sak?

My palate forgot the taste.

- High priest, please let me have some also.

Now you and I are the same people.

I should be able to understand your valuable lessons better now.

All of a sudden, my body feels warm...

Now, you don't seem like a fine high priest anymore.

You are more like the young noble officer from many years ago.

High priest. What's the matter?

- I am all right.

- High priest, please have another sak.

- I said that I would have only one cup!

- Please save this sinful miserable woman...

High priest...

- You must not go!

You must not interrupt high priest's lecture,

or you will get divine punishment.

If you believe that Aizen will win, then why don't you just wait?

- Do you think the priest will win?

- Yes, I think so.

- Even if the priest would win, I will never go back to you!

Say something!

Don't you have any answer?!

- If Aizen leaves you, your heart will return to me.

- High priest...

No, noble officer...

Please save me.

I am alive.

Hot blood is running through this body.

I want someone to caress this body.

Do I have an evil mind?

Do I have to feel like a dead person though I am alive?

- High priest! Please tell me!

- Aizen-dono! You must sever the earthly desires!

Sever it! Sever it!

Sever the earthly desires!

- You despise me!

My life has no meaning!

I only wish that I will be reborn in heaven,

but they say that women are sinful creatures.

I am so hopeless.

I am going to become a nun and pray for your happiness.

- Be a nun or a priest! I don't care!

- Your heart is cold as ice.

- My heart is warm for Aizen.

- Aizen will be born again after the high priest's divine power!

- High priest.

Noble officer!

High priest.

High priest.

High priest...

- You must be anxious.

- Be quiet!

- Taro! Taro! Taro! Taro-dono!

The mountain priest turned to a dog. I won! I won!

This Aizen's body defeated the priest's sutra!

- What?

- See! I took your revenge.

- High priest!

- See this! The holy high priest is crawling like a dog!

Instead of worshipping that, why don't you worship the goddess Aizen?

How about this?

- There are no gods or Buddha.

This is just a shelter for the devil!

- High priest, please hold me once again.

High priest...

- Aizen! Stop it!

- High priest!

- I am in pain...

- You are going to hell. Go to the hell of earthly desires.

- I am thankful.

I can see the purple clouds.

- Buddha is right here!

- Thank you... Thank you...

- This treasure is no use for a ghost in hell.

Taro-dono, there are plenty of coins.

Here is the gold Buddha statue!

I thought he'd be a tougher opponent, but he was defeated so easily.

He hurried to the hell of earthly desires.

- No, the high priest was seeing the purple clouds when he was dying.

He died seeing the Buddha.

- He died seeing this Aizen.

- Wrong!

The high priest had a peaceful expression on his face.

- What can you tell only from a facial expression?

Only the Buddha knows what the priest saw.

Please hurry and bury this body somewhere. We will finish off.

- No, he was the high priest of the Koya.

We must bury him properly.

- How foolish! You are a thief.

The priest is going to hell.

What is the meaning of the burial of a hell-bound priest by a thief??

- Aizen...

Does killing the Buddha... feel good to you?

- I defeated the Buddha, with this body!

- Aizen.

Aizen!

Aizen!

Aizen!

High priest, now I, Mumyo no Taro, am awakened.

I am going to renounce the world and become a priest.

In order to bring consolation to your soul and to pray for Aizen,

I will take this statue...

to the mountain!
