(gentle upbeat music)
(audience cheering)
- Come on, Vaughn!
Get him.
Touch down.
Come on, Vaughn score.
- [Speaker] All right, all right.
Come on, you can do it, Vaughn.
Come on!
(upbeat music) (audience cheering)
- You know, life really sucks for athletes.
I mean, Vaughn's in his prime right now,
but it's all downhill from here.
Intellectual ability on the other hand,
just improves with age.
- Hmm, the same intellectual ability
you used to lose the school chess championship to Leffler.
No one dissed you.
Why are you dissing, Vaughn?
- Josie sense of humor.
- Uh-huh.
- Besides I was distracted that day, okay.
(audience cheering) (upbeat music)
- [Josie] Woo, yeah.
- [Speaker] You can do it, Vaughn.
(audience cheering)
- [Referee] Three, two, one.
- Oh no.
(lively music)
- [Speaker] Oh, no, he lost.
(crowd murmuring)
- Overall, your son is a terrific athlete.
He's a born leader.
(shoes clacking)
- He didn't even say goodbye.
(door opening)
(door slamming)
- No, I let my dad down.
Wants me to know it.
- But it was really close.
Plus, the other guy was bigger.
- Yeah, I know.
I shouldn't have bulked up so much over the summer.
- It's normal.
And didn't you like grow three inches?
- Yeah.
But now I'm in a higher weight class.
I'm wrestling guys that are bigger and heavier than me.
I've gotta move down a class.
- You'd have to lose a couple of pounds.
- Please don't tell me, you're going on a diet.
- What if I am, Josie?
Sports are really important to me.
I thought you understood that.
(light tense music)
(bright music)
- [Josie] Okay, so my mom drops me at this boring school
and I'm thinking it's like all the other places I've gone.
Students,
teachers, principal,
you know, like normal schools.
(lightning crashes)
But it's not.
Weird stuff happens here, really weird stuff.
? Oh yeah ?
And what's this guy doing here?
Something's going on and someone's behind it,
and we're gonna get to the bottom of it.
- There's nothing wrong at Blake Holsey High.
(upbeat music)
- Power Nut bar.
Complete nutrition in half the calories of a regular meal.
I could use some of that.
(Vaughn laughing)
(upbeat music continues)
(electricity buzzing)
(exhales sharply)
I've gotta start winning again.
- I wonder what that's all about.
(papers shuffling)
(coins clanging)
(electricity buzzing)
Increase concentration.
I could use some of that.
(upbeat music)
(footsteps thumping)
- I'll have the anti-neo-orthodox variation.
- [Vaughn] Yes.
- You're down a whole weight class.
How come?
- I'm so motivated.
I've really been working out.
(upbeat music continues)
- Ah.
- Do a couple practice rounds with me.
- I don't want to hurt you.
- You do so.
(body thumping)
- Lucky throw.
- Totally.
- Let's go again.
(body thudding)
- This ones for you dad.
(body thumping)
- How'd you do that?
- [Coach] Good spin, Pearson.
(upbeat music continues)
- Rattus norvegicus.
- No, rat is on Tuesday.
(counter clicking)
Genus Lumbricus.
- Yeah, you're right.
Wednesday's night crawler delight.
- I can't believe they make us eat this stuff.
- You saving this for anyone?
- Oh,
uh.
(footsteps thudding)
No.
- I don't believe it.
My chemistry notes are mixed in with math.
I have been studying so much,
I can't keep my subject straight.
- I haven't even touched particle theory,
why do midterms have to come at the same time
as the band's CD launch?
I'm toasted.
You haven't even cracked a book all week.
You are planning on starting?
- You heard it here first.
I'm predicting A+ across the board.
Wanna try one?
It changed my life.
- A bunch of vitamin supplements in a plastic wrap
does not change your life.
- I beat Leffler, 17 games in a row.
I was in a zone.
- That's great, Lucas.
The rest of us have to study,
later guys.
(playful music)
- Marshall, good luck.
(playful music continues)
As the eminent physicist David Bohm once said,
"The past is active in the present as implicate order."
In other words, pencils down please.
(chairs shuffling)
- I don't believe it.
Lucas finished in an hour.
- So has Vaughn.
- In record time, I've already marked them
- Lucas got an A+.
- Actually far from it.
He made very sloppy mistakes, as did Vaughn.
(air whooshing)
- Vaughn.
- I've won my last five matches, my dad's totally impressed.
- Vaughn, Lucas is in big trouble,
he just totally blew his midterm.
- And you were wrong, Josie.
I'm winning because I lost weight, with these.
- Oh, the miracle snack bar.
- If I win today, I'm a lock for regionals.
What do I mean if? When.
Come and watch.
- You've gotta stop eating those bars.
- Fine, miss the match of the season
but don't say I didn't warn you.
(lively music)
- [Lucas] Check mate.
(deeply exhaling)
(chess piece clattering)
- Lucky break, Randall.
- This only hurt for a minute, Leffler.
What do you say, go again?
- Okay, one more.
- I dedicate the following display of chess domination
to Josie Trent.
(crowd cheering)
- Hope you like losing, Brett.
'Cause I'm your worst nightmare.
(body thumping)
(lively music continues)
(body thudding)
- [Referee] Three, two, one.
(hand thudding)
Winner.
(crowd cheering)
- What just happened here?
- I don't know.
What happened, son?
- I'm fine, coach.
- Ah.
Vaughn.
- What are you doing here?
I don't know what's wrong with me, I'm just so sad.
(wrapper rustling)
- How many of these have you had?
- Don't know, I need to eat them.
They're helping me win.
- No, they're not.
- Don't touch them.
(light dramatic music)
(playful music)
(electricity sizzling)
- You say Vaughn and Lucas have been eating these.
- I think it's all they eat,
and I've seen other kids eat them too.
- When did you notice the changes?
- With Vaughn, since he went on his diet,
and with Lucas since he went into his zone.
They never eat in the cafeteria,
always at the vending machine.
- Where's Vaughn now?
- Working out.
It's all he does anymore, and eat these.
I've gotta get it through to him
that these things are bad for him.
- Wrapper indicates plenty of nutritional ingredients.
Then let's find out if there's any real food value
lurking inside this pretty packaging, shall we?
(footsteps thudding)
(coins clattering)
(machine whirring)
- Lucas?
(Lucas growling)
He's exactly the same as Vaughn.
- Better not agitate them
until we know what we're dealing with.
(coins clattering)
(machine whirring)
(electricity draining)
Until then, however.
(bar crunching)
- Okay, this bar should contain 211 calories per 100 grams.
- This calorimeter measures the transfer of heat energy.
We'll measure in the initial temperature of the water
then heat it by burning our sample,
record the temperature change
to determine the food energy value of the sample,
AKA a calorie.
(glass thudding)
- Okay.
How much energy it takes to heat one gram of water,
one degree Celsius.
- That can't be.
But it is.
The bar has less than one calorie of food energy.
- I think we're supposed to eat like 2000 calories a day.
No wonder, Vaughn lost weight,
he might as well have eaten air.
- That's right, it's also impossible.
- Impossible that he was eating air?
- Impossible that the bar contains less than one calorie
of food energy.
Around here, that can only mean one thing.
(liquid bubbling)
- So Lucas and Vaughn have been eating these,
and their bodies have been breaking down
from lack of nutrition.
- Their bodies and their minds,
but what I don't understand is that if they're starving,
why don't they start eating real food?
- I guess they believe it'll make them stronger,
faster, smarter.
- We've gotta get these banned from the school.
- Tried to get one away from Vaughn,
and he nearly took my head off.
- Maybe there's another approach.
The human body is smart, it craves what it needs.
- What we need to do is exploit that craving.
- [Both] But how?
- We'll offer them a better alternative
to the snack bars that should break their hold on them.
- Nothing in the cafeteria is a better alternative.
- Then we'll have to improve on what's there.
And we're gonna need help, you find Corrine and Marshall.
I'll explain, after I've talked to Durst.
(footsteps thudding)
Oh boy.
(door knocking)
- And you're absolutely sure that this is necessary?
- You've seen the effect on Lucas and Vaughn,
and we don't know how many others have eaten the bars.
- I thought it was just a bad case of midterm fever.
- Well, I think the fever could become an epidemic
of poor nutrition.
- This list covers all the groups on the food pyramid,
plus a few extras.
- This ain't coming outta my budget.
- If the meal is plated properly,
and presented in a relaxing environment,
there's a greater likelihood that the students
will want to eat real food.
Especially students like Vaughn Pearson.
(lively music)
- State Championships here I come.
- Check mate.
My brain is a universe unto itself.
(lively music continues)
- We spread the word about the food, they're not hungry.
- They have to be.
- They won't come to the food, we'll take the food to them.
(footsteps thudding)
We'll appeal to their sense of smell.
This fan ought to be able to push the aroma
into the farthest reaches of the school.
(lively music continues)
(air whooshing)
Ah.
(Professor Z chucking)
We better start cutting more onions.
(people chattering)
(Vaughn grunting)
(air whooshing)
(deep exhaling)
- I can't believe I ate lentils.
- Glad to have you back, Lucas.
- You eating that?
- No, I'm stuffed.
- You eating that?
(person burping)
(people chattering)
- What?
- I thought if I was as smart as Vaughn was athletic,
I might have a chance.
- With Josie?
You can't just change to make a girl like you.
- I know, I'm smarter than that.
Why am I telling you this?
(somber music)
Okay.
Josie.
- Oh, have you seen Vaughn anywhere, Lucas?
- He's out back.
- Thanks.
(heavy breathing)
- I...
I brought you something.
- Not hungry.
- Look, Vaughn, you've got drive, you've proven that.
You don't have to prove anything to your dad anymore.
- I set my own goals, Josie.
I decide whether or not I'm a good athlete.
Whether or not I'm trying my hardest.
- Then prove it.
- I just want wrestling to be fun again.
- I hear the spaghetti's killer,
and these meatballs are better hot.
(wrapper rustling)
(food squelching)
- Why'd you do that?
- Because I care about you.
- Well then.
- Oh no.
(food squelching)
Ah, huh.
- Care about you too.
(light music)
You wanna come watch me wrestle tomorrow?
- Yeah, sure, I'd like that.
(suspenseful music)
(energy sizzling)
(upbeat music) (crowd cheering)
- [Josie] Come on, Vaughn. Yeah!
- [Speaker] Yeah, Vaughn.
- [Josie] Woo, yeah!
Yeah, you can do it. Woo.
(hand thumping)
(crowd cheering)
Great throw!
I knew you could do it.
- [Speaker] (indistinct), congrats man.
- Thanks. It's a little harder in the higher weight class
and dieting to stay low kind of took the fun out of it.
So I decided to push myself the old fashioned way
and it paid off.
- [Speaker] Thanks.
- Hold on, okay?
- Yeah.
(people chattering)
- Congratulations.
What got you back on your game?
- Well, I decided to win for me, not for you.
- Words, I've always lived by.
Why don't you come home tonight?
We'll have dinner to celebrate.
(bright upbeat music)
(fireworks cracking)
(bright music)
? Oo oh, oh yeah. ?
? Oh, oh, yeah. ?
? Oh, oh yeah. ?
