thought that sponges

were plants, because
they never saw them move.

In fact, sponges or the
Latin phylum porifera

are one of the oldest kinds of animals.

Marine biologists have
found sponge fossils

dating back half a billion years.

Now, as animals go, porifera
are pretty much home bodies.

Some are capable of movement,
but the vast majority

of sponges live their entire lives

attached to rocks, live valves, or coral.
