just to catch a glimpse with the long-billed dowitcher

or the marbled godwit or we could sit in the marsh.

- I'm not gonna answer that, I'll pass.

Okay, so my mom drops me at this boarding school

and I'm thinking it's like all the other places I've gone.

You know, like normal schools, but it's not.

Okay, so they lied to us.

- There's only one possible reason.

She's up to something she doesn't want us to know about.

- Oh, wait a minute.

You guys don't think they went on a date, do you?

- I'm her roommate.

I think I know about something like that,

- Josie and Vaughn?

It's too weird, even for our school.

- [Marshall] All right, then give me another explanation.

- You know it's against the rules to go over the wall,

and you know there's rules about leaving school grounds.

- Oh, Professor Zachary, have you seen Vaughn?

- They are both in big trouble.

but my dad never talks about what the lab was for.

My mom's got a doctorate in quantum physics.

I don't know what she does or who she works for,

and I've been having this dream.

and then this worker turns to me.

a big empty field,

and I took one step, and I was here.

Needles jumping all over the place, look.

- [Josie] This thing's gone wacky.

- [Vaughn] What's with the needle?

- I don't know,

and I don't know where due north is.

- Are you telling me we're lost?

- We're not lost, lost.

We're somewhere.

I just can't tell you where that somewhere is.

(wind swoosh) Whoa.

- What's just happened?

- [Josie] Got me.

But with the compass going haywire and flying off,

I'm thinking a strong magnetic field,

which could mean Pearadyne.

Come on, let's go.

- Whoa.

Let's go?

Hello? We're lost.

The compass just flew out of your hand.

Don't you think we should head back home now?

- Are you kidding?

We follow that compass,

we find the lab.

- You think?

Okay. (chuckles)

And don't read anything into this,

but maybe we should hold hands.

You know, just in case somebody disappears again.

- Oh, okay,

but it's just so that we don't get separated.

- Yeah, separated.

(string music)

- Okay, we've been walking for miles

and haven't seen anyone.

They're probably back at school already.

- I'm with Corrine.

I mean, we don't even know what direction they came.

- This is Josie's compass.

It's all mangled.

Okay, so it was flying tour...

(wind swoosh)

I think there's a strong magnetic field here.

- Which could be coming from the lab,

so let's follow the compasses

and maybe we could find Josie and Vaughn.

- Let's go.

(bright music)

(water trickles)

- I bet Pearadyne's just over there.

- Great.

If we're starting now,

we can probably build a bridge by summer.

- Honey, we climb down.

We walk across.

- Now, I don't know who's crazier,

you for wanting to go on or me for going with you?

Look, we'll just take it slow.

- [Vaughn] Josie.

- [Josie] Vaughn!

What's going on?

- [Vaughn] Something's moving me over.

It's getting stronger.

Josie. - Vaughn, it's your backpack.

The magnetic field is too strong.

(Vaughn grunts) - [Vaughn] Help.

It's pulling me over.

(Vaughn screaming) No!

(intense music)

For a minute there, I thought you-

- I twisted my ankle.

It's pretty swollen. (grunts)

- I better soak it in the creek before we head back.

- Okay, we are so lost.

- We are so lost without a compass.

- We are not without a compass.

We can build a natural compass.

This is called the shadow stick.

Now, we put a second stick at the tip of the shadow.

- Now what?

- Now we have to wait 30 minutes for the sun to move.

- [Corrine] 30 minutes?

- 30 minutes just went by in three seconds.

- Of course, if the magnetic fields are messed up,

then so is time.

This is working in our favor, Marshall.

- All right.

And we take a third stick

and put it at the point of the new shadow.

Now, mark one end of the last stick

and lay it across the two smaller sticks in the ground.

We put the mark end

against the last stick we put in the ground.

Now, you position your body

so that your right hand is facing east,

that direction is east.

The other end of the stick is west.

Left hand, west.

I'm now facing north.

- Cool.

- Let's head that way,

and maybe with any luck, we'll find them.

(upbeat music)

- You coming, Professor?

(drum beats)

- New shoes, very slippery.

- Scruff them on a rock for traction.

- Did you learn all this in the Alps?

- Nope, Wilderness Survival Camp.

To tell you the truth though, (wings fluttering)

there's nothing that can prepare you for being a principal.

(chuckles)

(intense music)

(tribal music)

- [Josie] How does it feel?

- What? (grunts)

If I'm gonna be doing any more walking,

it's gonna be back to the school to see a nurse.

As soon as I feel like I can make it back.

She's kind of obsessed with finding it.

- Okay, Vaughn is in big trouble

if we don't do something,

but we have to do something.

Marshall, Lucas, you stay here with Vaughn,

I'm going after Josie.

Which way did she go?

- Just up that path, she left about a minute ago.

- Okay, I'll be back as soon as I can.

- Hang on, Vaughn.

(Josie gasps)

- Look, we don't have time to see anything.

Vaughn is in trouble.

- Josie, the dam gates opened,

and Vaughn is stuck on the rock

in the middle of a raging river.

If we don't get him-

- Corrine, look, it's Pearadyne Labs.

- [Corrine] I don't believe it.

- Cool, huh? Let's go.

Vaughn is in trouble and he needs us,

all of us.

- But the lab- - Now, Josie, now.

The trail's this way.

We marked because we have problems with our compass.

- I think the water's rising.

but there's no way I'm going in there.

We'll end up with two people in trouble.

- Well, if those water gates opened,

there must be a way to close them.

You know, a switch, valve, something.

- [Lucas] Okay, Vaughn,

we're gonna look for a way to close the gates.

I tried turning it, but it's all rusted.

(kids grunting)

- When the water goes down, we'll come out and get you.

- Then all we have to do is find our way back.

- I do.

- [Josie] Okay.

- And what exactly were you hoping to find

at Pearadyne.

- Just some answers

about this dream I've been having, about my mom,

about all the weird stuff that goes on around the school.

- Then why would you lie to us about where you were going?

- I didn't wanna get everybody involved.

I didn't wanna get everybody in trouble.

- It didn't work, did it?

- Look, I'm sorry.

And Vaughn, I'm really sorry.

I shouldn't have left you.

Your friendship and your life

are more important than me trying to get

where I want to go.

- Look, let's make a pact.

We're all in this together.

If we're gonna figure this mystery out,

let's do it as a team.

- Good idea.

And hey, look on the bright side,

at least we didn't get-

which I will explain later.
