This tattoo is just scribbly and messy.

is.

To make it through this competition, you must use the tools that empower you to compete at

your highest level week after week.

the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer.

She must push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.

And whether it's her iconic ice pick or her bow and arrow, she always has the right tool for

whatever obstacle she encounters.

These guys in the competition don't really understand having such a huge female role model

to look up to.

Lara Croft is the ultimate symbol of woman empowerment.

Today, your canvases are all strong women who welcome any adventure and push themselves to

overcome obstacles.

For this flash challenge, you must tattoo a permanent representation of the tools that empower

them.

I'm an EMT firefighter and Air Force veteran, and I would like a tattoo of a set of rescue

irons with a stethoscope wrapped around it.

I'm a cancer survivor and a scholar, and today I would like to get a bow and arrow for my

transition to a better future.

I'm a public defender, and after losing my father a few years ago, I went through a very dark

time.

So I'd like to get a Lady Justice rising from the ashes.

In testing detail, these artists really need to pay attention to these items that the canvases

want and make it stand out and make it strong, make these women proud.

Somebody comes in, they want a specific item.

I'm actually ending it like that chapter of, like, thinking about the past.

When you actually get the chance to impact someone's life and how they feel about themselves,

it is the whole industry.

Apprentice, there was not a whole lot I cared for.

Any kind of a map at all.

I'm a geospatial scientist.

Instead of just doing a skull with the map inside of it, we're doing a skull globe.

I'm going to show detail by making sure I get every tiny little state and country in this

map on this skull.

Being in this industry, it makes you have to learn to speak up and stand up for yourself.

My canvas wanted Lady Justice rising out of the ashes.

We changed the design to be more of a phoenix to represent coming out of a really dark place

to where she's at now.

She overcame so many hardships, and that's exactly what I'm doing.

I'm being held down by every other contestant in here, and I'm going to fight past every one

of them to the end.

I'm really used to listening to my own gut and my own ideas.

And when I get different ideas, they just get me confused.

At this point, bro, I'm just trying to do my thing.

Maybe, like, the little lines on the tape or gauze or.

It's a little too late.

You know what I mean?

So I can't go in there and grab the machine.

You're going to give me a little bit of blacker shading?

Definitely shade off the bevel.

I feel even more pressure today because of how important this tattoo is to my canvas.

She served a lot of time in the military.

All the detail that goes into one boot, I got to turn around and do the same thing to the

other one.

Let's start with Jason.

So what do you do?

I'm a history professor, and so it really beautifully integrates all of the work that I'm

doing, the research that I'm doing.

Having that open book with the flowing pages gives me a sense of a cool breeze.

And then you have really great details in these little areas.

That looks great.

I love the fact that you put the little tooth in the center of the flower, but I really wish

that you would have defined where the wraps are going, because it kind of blends together

and looks like a mummy a little bit.

Of course it looks like a mummy.

It's a body with wrappings.

What's the difference?

Amanda, I particularly like what you did with the bow, all the tiny little lines and the handle,

and then the featherwork of the arrow.

Very delicate, and it all remains very feminine.

You did a great job.

The details in this are great.

You do a really clean, crisp tattoo.

But if you know how an axe handle works, the strength of the stick is the grain running long

ways.

If the grain's running through this way, it'll snap.

I mean, that is style.

A lot of really great detail in the small buildings.

The tiny little nautical stars in there is very clear and very legible.

Buddy, I think this is the best tattoo I've seen you do here.

Your crispest, tightest, sharpest, cleanest piece that you've produced.

This tattoo shows a great attention to detail.

The detail on the laces, the consistency of the thickness of the laces all the way through

each turn and bend was a detailed challenge.

You hit it really strong.

The shining moment of this tattoo is in the camera.

So many small little circles in there and ovals, but they might be the worst leaves I've ever

seen.

If the flower is a traditional flower, then the leaf has to be traditional with the flowers.

I like the fact that the detail really lies in the face, really lies in the wings, the actual

scale patterns.

I love the little bit of texture you got just in the stippling effect to separate the continents

from the rest of the skull.

There are so many details inside of a hot air balloon.

The basket, the rope, the curvature of the whole entire balloon.

And then adding technical into it, this thing is going to be insane to finish.

This is going to be painful.

This is straight up line work.

This is beautiful color.

That's a lot of detail.

No shortage of ways to show detail in a hot air balloon.

You have the basket, the flame, the sky in the background.

Today is all about detail, so we're going to nail this thing.

OK.

Also, this is technicolor challenge.

We want to see a wide spectrum of colors.

We're going to use blues and greens, maybe some purple, light.

It's going to be up to these artists to figure out where to put the detail in and how to make

a beautiful tattoo and not it up.

First thing,

would have to go smaller.

And it's just going to be less detailed, because it takes a lot longer to tattoo it on the

ribs.

So I want to switch it off the ribs.

I mean, I really want the ribs, just because my legs are water and my torso's air.

The more likely we can change the location, the bigger, cooler tattoos.

I'm not going to tap out or anything like that.

I have full back teeth, sternum.

I could be really screwed right now.

I mean, if this girl makes the slightest movement, my lines are going to look like , and that

will send me home.

It has to be Technicolor, right?

Yes, that's the only thing I want to talk to you about, because I know Steampunk isn't Technicolor.

So the background, I envision to be kind of like a space background, like universe.

Galaxy can be relatively colorful, right?

Maybe you can incorporate some fresh polka style, like hexagon pattern.

Where do you even come up with these ideas?

The air balloon is like a ball, right?

I was thinking to be more like a cube.

I don't know what to do at this point.

And I swayed her into this really awesome design of this balloon carrying this mother whale

and its infant.

I can pull off a compass, but it's just not going to be that cool.

I'd rather see a whale tied to a balloon than a compass.

I don't think it hits the challenge as much.

They are bright.

There's not a very soft-looking hot air balloon that flies around.

Are you just going to freehand them in?

Without those things in place, these things are going to look like a hot mess.

I'm terrified right now because my canvas has tissue paper skin, which means that every line

I do is almost a blowout.

You're doing amazing, and I really appreciate it.

This impacts everything because I have to go twice as slow.

I wanted to go detailed, but it's on the ribs.

So I think it's better to make sure we get a tattoo done and it's clean.

In tattooing an armpit, you run the risk of overworking the skin because the armpit swells

really fast.

The big bright color's going to be the yellow.

Right now, I'm putting all my eggs in one acorn-shaped basket, and I'm hoping this takes off.

I was going to do a dark brown.

But just make sure over here is black.

So it really ate up the majority of my time.

So now I'm rushing at the end to get this frame dialed in.

Your tattoo has whales.

When have you ever seen a balloon made out of 8,000 pearls?

If you'd spend more time tattooing, less time fixing your hair, you might not have been on

speed control to the end of that thing.

That's probably why you finished your tattoo so fast you don't even got any hair.

Team Steve sucks at skull picks.

I handed out skull picks the way I felt like I needed to.

It looks rough.

It looks painful.

That balloon is really jacked.

There's not a lot of solid areas anywhere.

We've done nothing but damage with our skull picks, and I feel like you've done nothing but

damage to yourselves.

I felt like I gave Josh a piece that he would struggle on.

for what I thought was going to be a load of line work.

He turned it into barely any line work.

What do you want me to do?

Then you gave Jason a rib tattoo.

It was the ribs, but I felt like you could shine.

Had it been on the calf, I'd have smashed it.

Had Josh had a rib tattoo to do, he would have had wiggly up lines the whole way through.

I can't figure out who the hell you guys are tired of.

I gave Frank an armpit, and I gave Deanna a cluster .

Team Steve sucks at skull picks.

You guys have had two skull picks in a row.

And you know what we've gained from it?

Josh almost got tattooed the day twice, and we lost Mike.

I handed out skull picks the way I felt like I needed to.

You know what I mean?

I'm not even listening to .

I'm going to target everybody.

Today, you had to show flawless detail tattooing Technicolor hot air balloons.

Team Steve, you're up.

Overall, I like the tattoo.

There are areas where you showed nice detail, specifically in the basket weaving, in the ropes.

I love this banner that's going around.

But the pastel-y lightness that you put into this doesn't give this thing power.

See the way the green is shaded, how patchy and how unsmooth.

It looks like cupcake frosting for a balloon.

It doesn't have strength.

Fame.

I like that graphic image.

I like the sun and the moon and the stars.

The weakness in this tattoo is the color.

The purple and the blue were scratchy and holidayed everywhere you look in this tattoo.

This is color saturation 101, dude.

Because of time, I was trying to get the color in there, man.

In this competition, you're going from one tough outing to another.

And it's like you're not shaking off the last one.

You need to find a way to step into your future clean.

Jeremy.

I like your idea.

I like the design of the balloon in the middle.

going for that technicolor look.

But the top balloon is really jacked.

You went too small for the amount of detail you try to show.

I think it looks pretty detailed.

If you look at this frame, no two sides of this thing have the same line weight.

There's an overall messiness to the whole piece.

Amanda.

First question is, between the balloon and the basket, what's going on there?

I was under the impression that the flame was more up in the actual balloon, so I didn't design

it to where there was the middle part with the flame.

It just looks like it's not done.

You need a bolder outline on this.

Look at all the areas where yellow actually penetrates your black outline and covers it.

If you put a thicker, stronger line, it looks more deliberate.

Nobody has a heavy balloon that's going to cruise through the atmosphere and support the weight

of human lives that are inside.

Daniel.

The outline on this thing is great.

What I have issue with on this is all of the color.

There's not a lot of solid areas anywhere.

I only had an hour and a half to finish the color.

The outline just took twice as long as I ever thought it could.

The winning edge is a tattoo that you can finish.

Your color looks punched.

You're the first one so far that has a waxy glow to your tattoo.

The placement is what kills this thing.

The balloon is so slender and straight, and the basket is directly underneath it, and it's

just turned on its side.

It just doesn't look like a hot air balloon.

It looks like a chalice of blood with butterflies flying out of it.

Lots of really nice details in here, particularly in that basket.

I love the attention to detail in these ropes that are going throughout this piece.

The area of the globe is very nice, but a lot of these tones come out muted, punched in a

little bit more solid black, and it would have given this tattoo a little more contrast, and

those colors would have stood out.

I love the tension of detail in this netting that goes across with the shadow underneath.

All these little squares and triangles that you've created, the color is solid in each one

of those little areas.

I mean, looking at this compared to what I've looked at in the room, it's a relief.

I like the way he played on what he wanted with the acorn and the autumn leaves.

And I have to commend you on your placement of this thing, making the balloon just slightly

higher than the actual crease of the armpit.

Instead of packing that much color in that area, this guy would not have been sitting like

a rock.

Open skin in this small, tight of a thing is your friend for sure.

What I like about this tattoo is that you were able to take an idea that was potentially pretty

stiff and turn it into something artistically really interesting.

Deanna's is just overworked in the bottom.

That is dug in there.

But I don't think her lines are that bad.

Comparing Deanna's to Jeremy's just right away, Deanna's is better.

But application-wise, I can't get over the way the bottom was applied on Deanna's.

So today we're testing detail with Technicolor hot air balloons.

I think a lot of missed opportunities for some straightforward, basic tattooing here.

Deanna's rough application puts her in the bottom.

When you look at that close, you can see how it's just rough.

And that's overworking the skin.

The guy out-thought himself.

Those balloons are screwed up, and this frame is not clean.

Inconsistencies are just abundant.

I expected to see more imagery from Amanda, but she's dropped them off.

Amanda's outlines are really weak.

She tried to put all these different tones in there when it would have been great to just

make simple pink bows.

Against the green background, there's your technicolor play.

Our entire field needs a color wheel for Christmas.

It's really going to be tough to determine who goes home this week.

Pick a point and go to the other side of the frame.

Reining him in is really the only challenge I have with him.

Would you say Jeremy's outline is better or worse than Amanda's?

I'm having a hard time with Amanda's.

The outline is so thin, your tattoo doesn't have the bones to support the weight that you

put in the color.

I did choose the wrong line weights for a lot of this tattoo.

I think I just kind of got ahead of myself when I was designing it and thinking I could do

all this color in the amount of time I had.

You made poor choices in putting this frame there.

The fact that you can color yellow up to a line and it takes the line out, that line is hollow.

That line is weak.

That line is not in there.
