artist Audrey Law,

to explore one of Europe's
most popular destinations.

It's so pretty over here.

bike over the railing

and go for it.

Reedus: Right?
Law: [Laughs]

Reedus: Where you have to get
really far off the beaten path

just to leave the crowds behind.

I wish I knew geography better.

I could tell you exactly
where we are, but I don't.

and we're in Portugal.

Feels like
there's nobody here.

Yeah, it's pretty quiet.
It's kind of nice.

Look how high up we are.
This is sure pretty.

It really is.

I feel like this

Like if you're
in high school,

this is where you come
to make out.

You think so? You think
the high schoolers come here?

Audrey and I first met
through a mutual friend.

She's co-founder of Paradise
Road Show and The Union,

two popular vantage bike
and car events in California.

A photographer by trade,

her work graces magazines and
billboards all over the country.

So you've been to
Portugal before?

I have, right when
I got out of college.

There was like an art camp
that I went to,

just seminars
and workshops together,

and it was like artists
from all different mediums.

In Portugal, they're like
living, breathing arts.

Yeah.

Portugal once controlled
the oceans,

leaving its footprint
across the globe.

Today, it's a country
experiencing the influence

of the rest of the world.

A place that's rich
with history and culture.

An old world melting pot
that I can't wait to explore.

Is that a fishing boat,
that little --

Mm-hmm. I wonder
how cold the water is.

They look like they're lost
at sea, right?

Hello!

I'm telling you,
this is make out point.

It's two high schoolers
that went out there years ago,

and they're still there.

"We're still making out!
Don't mind us."

[Motorcycles start,

It smells so nice,
it smells like green.

The air smells clean,
you know?

This place is adorable.

A few years ago
I visited Lisbon

on a press tour
for "The Walking Dead"

and immediately fell in love.

Just another tourist
captivated by Portugal's allure.

So it's great to be back,

taking in the ethos and history
of the country in transition.

You have everything in Portugal.

You can go to a beautiful beach,

and then you can go
and sleep in the mountains.

It's paradise in
the tip of Europe.

The rise of tourism is crazy.

Portugal had this boom
about tourism.

In the last 10 years, people
really discovered Portugal.

I think we are going to stay
like the most visited

country forever.

Reedus:
This is the spot.

Law: It is a little fairy tale.

Reedus: Arriving in Lisbon,
we'll get a taste of the past

before venturing out to explore

medieval villages
north of the city.

Then it's into Porto
to immerse ourselves in sights

and sounds of a magical city.

A 3-day, 340 kilometer journey

along the captivating
western coast line of Portugal.

Law: Wow, look at
all the tile.

Yeah, the tile work
is crazy.

Yeah, it's
really beautiful.

I wonder how old
some of these buildings are.

I don't know, some of them
have kind of

like a '70s Miami vibe.

And some of them
look really old.

You're like,
"Oh, yeah, that's old."

Like that's just
kind of common Europe.

This is magic here.

The imprint of Lisbon's
long history

greets you at every turn.

A medley of architecture
and art dating back

to the Romans and Moors

and a convergence of culture
that has shaped the city

ever since it was
Europe's most essential port.

These a lot to take in
and even more to unpack.

Oh, another sick
right coming up.

Kind of fun,
kind of deadly.

I'm sure they can get
really bad during

trafficky times.

Yeah, right.

But these cobblestone streets

weren't made
with motorcycles in mind.

Good thing there's another way
to check out

the old center of the city.

Tuk tuks appeared
with the tourism.

Tuk tuk,
it's a tourism vehicle

that I believe came from India.

Suddenly they just poof.

Like mushrooms,
just growing everywhere.

and become one of Lisbon's first
tuk tuk drivers 10 years ago.

Miguel: So we are riding through
the old town, very small alleys.

I love the tile here.

of our identity.

I love it.

I could just stay here
and photograph it for a week.

It's amazing. It's a mix
between the immigrants,

hipsters, prostitutes,
drug addicts.

Is there drugs
in Portugal?

You can use,
and it's not a crime.

Really?
Yeah.

So people can buy drugs,
use drugs openly

and not be arrested?Yeah.

How does that work?

Very well.
Normally it results

in a very good way
of dealing

with that problem.Wow.

We are about to arrive
at one of the highlights,

where it's possible
to see almost all the city.

The fresh air
part of the city.

Everywhere here is
pretty fresh it seems.

We start our tour
this direction, the river,

and we did all that way.

What a beautiful city.

Yeah, it really is.

So you have the bridge --

The name of Cascais
came from Arabian pirates.

to rob Lisbon

but his name was Cascais.Cascais.

Cascais.

So the corruption
of the name,

gave the actual name
to the city.

it's the Riviera.

And it was the meeting point
of the pirates.

Reedus: The Portuguese pride
themselves on being artisans

of food and wine, and the
desserts are no exception.

For years,
people have been traveling

to an outer suburb of Lisbon
to taste their most famous,

the pastéis de belem.

Sexy hair net.

You hair's not even
in there.

There's too much hair.
I know.

Clarinha:
Come this way, please.

Smells so good.

We bake about 20,000
of these every day by hand.

Wow.
Really?

20,000 a day?
That's nuts.

We're going to eat
like 100 of these

so you might want
to put us to work.

There's a proper way

It's kind of
therapeutic. Yeah.

I kind of feel like
I'm working out

a lot of past things
right now.

Is this like
a family business?

It's been our family
business since the start,

almost 100 years.

Most recipes
for Portuguese sweets

were invented
in monasteries.

The nuns,
they used the egg whites

to press the clothes,
to get them starched.

Oh, wow.
Yeah.

And so they were left
with the yolks,

so they got creative,
and 9 out of 10 typical

Portuguese sweets
were invented in monasteries.

Wow.This one, for instance,

was invented in
a monastery.

The one right here
on our front door.

The monasteries were
closed in 1834. Yeah.

Reedus: Portugal has had
a long, bloody path

from religious monarchy
to democracy.

After the 1834
Liberal Revolution,

the country shut down
all monasteries and convents,

nationalizing the property,

leaving many nuns to fall back
on their knowledge

of baking to earn a living.

Resulting in the rise
of the modern day

Portuguese pastaria.

[Speaking Portuguese]

She's saying that

I like the flakiness

of Lisbon's rich lineage

is its vibrant art scene.

And to me, there's no better
window into the culture

than how they nurture artists.

We're on our way to meet a woman
who runs a spot

at the center of it all.

on the top of your roof.

It's a cultural venue.
We host a lot of events here.

Law: Cool.And then there's

the restaurants, and it's also
music academy for young kids.

Oh, cute.Is that it?

[Laughs] Anything else?That's a lot of stuff.

And you're on some list
of like the 50 best people

in the world.

50 best women in Lisbon.

That's pretty awesome.

Reedus: She's being modest.

Mariana Duarte Silva
is a CEO and veteran

of the music industry.

One of just 12 female
entrepreneurs chosen

to have her likeness
made into a Barbie.

I've got to admit,
I'm a little jealous.

Now, this is
the music academy,

where we teach the kids
how to program

and produce music
online.

They can mix digital
with classic instruments.

We work with children
that usually

wouldn't have the access
to music production.

Music school for me
in school was the recorder,

the flute.

Yeah.
Yeah.

The last thing I want
to show you,

you got to check my venue.

This works as the performance
place for the kids,

but also the club nights
every weekend.

That's awesome.

We party until 6:00 am.

Law: Oh, man.

This is cool,
so your students come in here

and they perform
for the other students?

For the public?For the public.

Oh, wow.The public.

It's like "Fame."
Remember that TV show "Fame"?

It's one
of my references.

A great thing that the City Hall
did was relocate temporarily

to a very rundown neighborhood
which was independent,

and that whole thing, the whole
neighborhood shifted a lot

because of the City Hall.

I mean you would put
City Hall in the poshiest

area of town,
not the heart of the problem.

And they did that,
and it worked.

Wow.
Wow.

Silva: So gentrification
just arrived,

and this is actually
a really hot spot.

Eventually, we will have
to leave here.

It's a shame.
It's a shame.

You ever see
that show "Ozark"?

Yeah.
Of course.

Got to start paying
people off.

Yeah, but maybe I'll have
to deal drugs before I do that.

I heard
it's legal here.

Decriminalized,
it's not a crime.

To possess.

And it seems
to be working.

You basically treat it as
a disease instead of a crime.

Crime, yeah.So you make legal clinics

where people can do drugs
with safe tools.

That's very smart,
actually.

the streets and just

And the criminal system
can be a loop.

where you can't escape.

It's crazy that
that's working,

and I can see how

Portugal's novel approach
to an age old problem

is just the latest example
of adaptability

and social reform
in it's long history.

And after 20 years of success,

it seems they might just be
on to something.

Reedus: Day two -- one last stop
in Lisbon before

we hit the road.

So how long have you been
doing "Paradise Road Show"?

Law: Six years.Wow.

"Paradise Road Show"
was actually like born

on a motorcycle trip,
in Europe actually.

It's grown a lot,
and it's really exciting

to see that force
so dominant.

We're doing it
for the people

who care about
vintage cars and bikes.

Yeah.

Audrey is
a vintage enthusiast.

With all the historic sites
these streets have to offer,

there's one thing
that's missing.

I don't see any
old cars here. None.

There must be
some old cars here.

I never see them.
They're all super tiny.

But where we're headed
has the next best thing.

For Portugal, Unik Edition is
kind of, well, kind of unique.

Due to strict local laws,
motorcycle customization

has become an underground scene
in Portugal,

making Unik one of Lisbon's
only true custom shops.

Wow, what a cool shop.

legal lights,
legal exhaust,

can't cut the frame
or change the wheel distance,

or put an open exhaust.

What about old cars,
because we were talking,

there's like no
old cars here.

-It's a challenge for us

to still do something cool
but try to keep the law.

So we are going to Obidos,
a really old town

that was built
inside a fortification

and then grew out of it.

It's really cool.

Ironically, it was
a police bike.

Law: Well, you gave it
a second life.

Much cooler
second life.

Yeah.

You're lucky that
Mad Max bike wasn't done

Reedus: Leaving Lisbon,
it's an 85 kilometer trek north

until reaching
the Medieval village of Obidos,

one of the few remaining
walled cities in all of Europe.

And that is
Obidos.

Oh.Oh, look at the castle.

Yeah, that's crazy.

Do people live here
all year round?

Yes, they do.

I see all these buses,
and I think nobody lives here.

Like it's just
like tourists?

-Yeah.
-Yeah, it's very tourist zone.

That'd be kind of annoying
to live in like

in the tourist
attraction.

Now it's time
for the bumpy stuff.

Vehicles are prohibited
inside of Obidos village walls.

So we're going to check
this place out on foot.

This is pretty
cool already.

Obidos is one of my
favorite places in Portugal.

It's a small village,
but surrounded with a big wall.

They have here a typical
product called ginjinha,

that is a small cherry liqueur,

and became also one of
the trademarks of Obidos.

60 years ago, it was
a scandal in a public place.

It's a collection.

All different,
all over the world.

In America,

This bar opened
as antique shop.

Most of it was swords
and bayonets.

We have from the time
of the Napoleon wars,

when the first battle
from the French

against the English

in Portugal
was here in Obidos, 1808.

Do you ever see ghosts
in this place?

Law: Is it haunted?

There are a bunch
of legends, stories about it.

I'm sure.
Let's hear some ghost stories.

In Portugal, every town
has a story

about the enchanted
Moorish girl coming at night.

Maybe just wishful thinking,
I don't know.

Why a Moorish girl?

Well, Portugal was occupied
by the Moorish

for almost 500 years.

History normally
romanticizes the past

and so the Moorish girls

were kind of romantic idea
of Medieval Portugal.

Maybe that's
the reason.

So, how many people
live here in Obidos?

What's the ratio?

Inside the walls, it's about
50 people live inside.

Wow.But 40 years ago,

almost 2,000.

There's been
a big drop.

Has to do with tourism.

Property prices go up,
and people just leave.

It's a shame,
but I understand that.

I've never seen so many
Americans in Portugal.

I apologize.Moving in.

But the specialty of the town
is the cherry brandy,

the ginjinha with
the morello cherries.

If you were not driving,
we probably would be drinking

now, but...

Why would we leave?

[Laughter]

Got to respect a guy
who isn't afraid to let visitors

know they're spoiling his town
right to their faces.

That guy's awesome.

Yeah, he was great.

But you know what?
He's got a point.

Without stewards of the past,
no future can remain.

fishing communities have dotted

Portugal's shoreline,
seemingly untouched by time.

Making our way on
a 210 kilometer journey

through Nazare to the maritime
port of Aveiro.

The wind is kicking up,

I wonder if that's why they have
such big waves over there.

Maybe.

Those waves are so big,
it's kind of mind blowing.

That's scary.

It's terrifying, yeah.

The village of Nazare was once
one of those sleepy

coastal towns until word got out
about its torrential waters.

Narrator: The Atlantic Ocean
here is usually rough.

There's no harbor,
no breakwater.

And for centuries,
fishermen have lost their lives

in small boats.

Reedus: Famous for its
100-foot waves,

Nazare has been transformed
into a surfing mecca.

Alright, I want to see
where this giant wave is.

waiting for this.

We're stopping to meet a guy

who knows the power of these
waters better than anyone.

Jet Ski driver Sergio Cosme

is the guardian angel
of Nazare.

During big wave season,
he rescues fallen surfers,

saving countless lives.

And now that it's
off season, the Jet Skis

are used for a less dangerous

but still heart stopping
adventure.

the biggest wave of the world.

So it is the mecca of
the big wave surfing, you know?

How has this town changed since
all the big surfing?

It changes a lot.

Even people are buying houses
just to rent, you know?

Here, the houses
are really expensive now,

and all that changes
because of surfing.

Reedus: Out on a Jet Ski
or a surfboard, it's easy

to feel like
it's just you and the water.

But I'm discovering even the
most remote regions of Portugal

aren't immune from the influx
of new visitors.

And it's effects
are already being felt,

changing the seaside
village forever.

a picturesque,

canal laced city that's been
called the Venice of Portugal.

How long have you been doing
rides for tourists like us?

So I was working in a bank,
and since 2018,

I quit the bank
and I joined the tourism world.

And I've been doing this
for already four years.

Reedus: With the art nouveau
architecture,

Pascal painted buildings,
and, yeah, its canals,

Aveiro is kind of like
a less discovered Venice,

for now anyway.

I love the buildings
here, too.

I mean,
these are so beautiful.

And it makes for an ideal spot
to finally crack open

the ginjinha I've been
holding on to since Obidos.

to come into the city,

they would flood

and so the channel used
to separate the rich people,

those one who
could afford to have a house

on the high hill,
and those who couldn't afford

to have the house
on the high hill.

Tourism, is it just
booming here?

Like, all over
Portugal, though, right?

Yeah.
All over Portugal.

A lot of Americans
are coming to Portugal.

They are trying to buy houses
here to live because,

you know, the quality
of life, it's amazing.

So many people moving here
and coming to visit here.

Do you like that,
or are you like, "Stay out"?

I don't mind, because
it's good for our country.

And when you come here
to live, to work,

or for your vacation,
you are bringing money to us,

you are giving jobs
for people,

you are eating our food,
you are doing tourism with us,

so we are improving
our lifestyle.

And because of that,
it's good.

It's a balance, you know?

a double edged sword.

There's a delicate balance
of welcoming new industry

and opportunity
while preserving what was.

Last night we stayed in
the beachside town of Arcozelo.

But there's no rest
for the weary, or for us,

because we've got one final day
to discover this country.

I think they support art
a lot here.

It's got
an art vibe to it,

like a bohemian sort
of Woodstock art thing going on.

I was probably like 15 or so,

little digital camera,
and I'd go to shows,

and I was just taking pictures

and I was like,
"I really like doing this."

I really like film.

digital everything and make it
look like film now.

I try and make my digital
stuff at least look

a little less sterile.

is kind of a big deal.

Something we may have
already mentioned once or twice.

Estudio Plato,

a downtown artists'
co-working space

to try our hands at painting
traditional Portuguese tile.

I love the tile here.
Where does that come from?

We had a king in our
16th century called

El Carlos, and he traveled
to south of Spain,

and he brought a really nice
cultural heritage

that was these
sort of tiles.

There are Mudéjar tiles.

So he decided
to bring it to Portugal.

In Portugal, azulejos,
glazed ceramic tiles,

function as more than just
beautiful decor

coloring these cities.

They're the physical embodiment
of Portuguese multiculturalism,

combining influences from
the Middle East, Latin Europe,

and former colonies
around the world.

This is great!Art class.

We have

If we do this really well,

We don't have

symbolic sign in our culture.

Portugal is really nostalgic.

You hear about the word
"saudade" a lot.

Man: And it's a word that only
exists in Portuguese,

so that's feeling the lack
of something or someone.

And Fado is based on that
melancholy of missing people.

Fado sing it with such

an emotion of faith,
of destiny, of profundity

that you cannot explain it.

You just have to listen
and feel it.

Wow. What's that about?

It's about missing
someone for real.

At the beginning, Fado was
a hybrid kind of music.

People used to have a lot
of times without being at home.

Their wives, their kids
used to miss them a lot.

The same as
like cowboy stuff.

Western stuff.

All the songs are about
"I loved her, and I lost her."

It's the same
sort of thing, right?

Yes.

that the past is held tight,

but there's also knowledge that
with change comes possibility.

Even with the uncertainty
it brings.

A longing for what came before
while adapting for what will be.

It's why saudade,
the feeling behind this music,

resonates so deeply here.

but I'm already beginning
to understand.
