They say that the merfolk first appeared in Hinashi Bay long ago.

The Shadowstone cliff blocks the sun,

which makes for a fine fishing ground in the overcast bay,

and gives the merfolk who dwelled on Merfolk Island an ideal environment.

But because there are so many sunken ships that pose a navigational hazard,

locals stay clear of it even though excellent abalone live in those waters.

Fearing the merfolk, residents sealed up the gaps in Shadowstone

between the bay and the island.

It is a Hinashi custom to hang up dried sea urchin husks that are painted white,

which are said to represent the sun that the merfolk fear so.

The merfolk of Hinashi are sea monsters that prey even on humans,

and many passing ships have been lured to their doom by their singing.

We practice in secret on Merfolk Island!

Wearing one of those makes you look like a fool!

Kai can't swim, so it's okay.
