Coming up

we’ll catch up with legendary director Steven Spielberg

BFG’ for me was a complete, not a return or reinvention

but it was a return to being able to use my imagination

we re-live the adventure of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull

Steven had all this research on how the Russians were investigating parapsychology and paranormal activities and ESP and telekineses

And using mind control as a military weapon

So that was very much the landscape of Spalko, Colonel Dr. Irina Spalko who I play

and we get into the life and times of actor Daniel Radcliffe

I’d always enjoyed it, I loved being on set

but I think 14 was time I looked around and was like: I think I want to do this for the rest of my life

I have to work out how to do that, how to get better at it

how to make my way in the industry

But first... let's check out the Hollywood friendships forged under the glare of big-budget cameras

Let me be the first to extend the hand of friendship

Many actors spend half the year or more on a movie set, so naturally they grow close to their colleagues and co-workers

Sometimes lifelong friendships are made

These are my friends. I wanna make sure they're having fun

So that was a priority also

I'll tell you something, I grew up on a set

It's the most comfortable place that I can be

I love it. I love crews, I love…

I love camera people and PAs and sound people and crafties and my actors and this guy over there

Like, I just, I wanna be friends with everyone

Work always takes up so much time, so I thought if you're fortunate enough to work with people that are close friends and people that are your family, it's great you know

Oh, we got straight on a train and went to Paris together

Yeah, we took our families and had a family holiday together

A Parisian holiday

- He's a genius

I think it's because of J.J. Abrams, you know. He's a very good friend of mine and he owes me

so he puts me in all the films

Bradley's a close friend of mine. I love his work and I love working with him

It also works the other way, when actors choose to create projects where they can collaborate with their friends

Like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon

It's such a dream come true that it's almost hard to imagine that it's actually real

It's a very strange thing

Well, we've been friends since we were 18, so that's like 7 years now we've known each other,

so, yeah, we've kind of looked after each other

Listen, it didn't feel like work. You know it's just a bunch of friends hanging out

In the course of just hanging out as we say

we think of ideas and we talk about the what-ifs of movie stories

What if we invented a character like this? What if this happens to this character?

What if these events occur to these people? What if this story or that story?

And it's fun

And some stars prefer to stay close with people outside of Hollywood, to help themselves stay grounded

It's really nice to be part of a city that isn't fully aware all the time of films and movies

And just to be somewhat removed from the film industry in my downtime in my free time

Most of my friends don't work in film, so that's always for really...you know It's nice

You need to retain your perspective, I think, on real life when you’re in this bubble

But it’s good to kind of like, you know

check in with people from home every now and again

I try and sort of meet friends at the end of the day

and I wouldn’t have many left if I was sort of… hahaha

uh, anyway, oh, here he goes again, he’s talking about his characters

A close friend to Star Wars’ George Lucas

this Hollywood hotshot seems to always amaze his audience with intriguing and heartwarming films

He is one of the most popular directors and producers in the industry

Let’s get into the magical world of iconic director Steven Spielberg

And, action!

Steven Allan Spielberg was born on December the 18th, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio

He became an avid movie fan as a youngster, even making his own amateur films on a Super 8 camera

I began my career just trying to have a lot of fun

Making movies that would please me and hopefully please a lot of people

The 1975 thriller 'Jaws' become Steven's first true classic

and the first movie ever to earn over $100 million dollars

Then for 1977's Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Spielberg swapped sharks for aliens, but the result was another astounding triumph

After the success of Jaws and Close Encounters

Hollywood sort of said: You can do anything you want. So I have been actually

What he wanted to do included the popular action adventure 'Raiders of the Lost Ark

and 'E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial

regarded as one of the most magical movies ever made

And at that point E.T. lowers his head

He lowers his head real sadly

He decided on a change of pace, however

for 1985’s 'The Color Purple

a deliberate attempt to step away from the summer blockbusters he'd become known for

We wind up making one kind of movie over and over again

and I think 'The Color Purple' was an important departure for me

because it did allow me to find and challenge myself with another subject

that I possibly have had very little personal experience with but have the courage now to tackle

Another great example of Spielberg continuing to mix it up came in 1993

First he unleashed 'Jurassic Park', which was a milestone in the use of CGI, but a piece of cake to make, apparently

Jurassic Park is the kind of movie that I can do almost automatically.

You know I don't have to set my heart or my mind in a different direction to do 'Jurassic Park'

Jurassic Park was a fun experience for me, it was a good experience but it was like making the sequel to Jaws

The real challenge that year was 'Schindler's List

an intense black and white drama about an unexpected source of kindness during the atrocities of the Holocaust

It is a story which is so hard to imagine

What really happened

it is so hard to imagine that no film can really tell you or show you what it was like

People see 'Schindler's List' and they think they know what it was like. They don't know what it was like

The movie delivered Steven a long overdue Oscar as Best Director

then in '98, he earned another for 'Saving Private Ryan'

which he often cites as one of the hardest projects of his long career

Directing is an extremely non-stop sport

You don’t get a break, you don’t get to breathe.

The first day of shooting, the second day of shooting

the third day of shooting, right through the schedule, I always come to the set nervous

It’s a good feeling; it means I’m going to work really hard to not be nervous by doing good work

And he’s continued to mesmerize us with both real life dramas and crowd pleasing adventures

making hits such as ‘Catch Me If You Can’, ‘War Horse’, ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ and ‘Lincoln

I'm always looking for a story

that you say: Wow! That's amazing

Recent years have been no exception

In 2015 there was the Cold War drama ‘Bridge of Spies

I have a weakness, which is I love history

And he followed it the next year with the children’s fantasy ‘The BFG

BFG’ for me was a complete, not a return or reinvention

but it was a return to being able to use my imagination

Then 2017 brought us the very political period piece ‘The Post’

That whole broadside assault on the news media is something that,

gee, I wonder, is that happening again today?”

But instead of taking a break, Spielberg immediately set about learning a whole new skill set to make the virtual reality extravaganza

Ready Player One

This was a really challenging film. ‘Jaws’ will always be the most physically challenging

This is maybe the third most challenging film I’ve ever made, because the technology was so complex to deliver the kind of reality you’re about to see in the movie

Many believe Steven Spielberg is the most talented and dedicated director Hollywood has ever seen

and luckily, he shows no signs of slowing down

Well, I’m not willing to stop working

because as long as I get excited about a story, there’s no reason to stop

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are said to be an example of strong friendships in Hollywood

and their fans are forever grateful as they teamed up and produced one of the most captivating franchises in history;

the ‘Indiana Jones’ series

For this week's trivia we'll be looking at 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

which was released about twenty years after Indy's previous adventure 'The Last Crusade

In the first three movies, the famous archeologist mostly ran into trouble with the Nazis

but as this adventure takes place many years later,

he now has to battle it out with Russian Communists

That’s the setting of this

Because twenty years, almost twenty years have passed.

This one is set in the fifties with McCarthy-isms and the beginning of the Cold War

Russia versus America

And that is very much the terrain in which this film is set

So it does have that fifties B-movie kind of feeling

And action

Hit it,

squeeze it

look down at your feet

And cut!

The most interesting aspect of the film is that mysterious ancient crystal skulls actually exist for real

and are part of a Mayan prophecy

When director Steven Spielberg found out that former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was interested in them

he decided to make the Communists the movie's villains

They're led by Cate Blanchett's character, who she based on James Bond's 'From Russia With Love' adversary Rosa Klebb

Steven had all this research on how the Russians were investigating parapsychology and paranormal activities and ESP and telekinesis

And using mind control as a military weapon.

So that was very much the landscape of Spalko, Colonel Dr. Irina Spalko who I play.

Even though this movie wasn't as well liked as the previous instalments

it's still a true Indiana Jones adventure

So not only do we learn about ancient civilizations, there's also plenty of action involving a hat and a whip

Indy's weapon of choice was almost made with CGI, due to new safety rules

But Harrison Ford was adamant and insisted he use the real one

When it comes to safety though, Ford was almost a goner

When filming the scene where he drives a truck through a wall

explosives were used

But one of them didn't go off

and landed in the passenger seat

Even though 'The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' made a very healthy profit

with worldwide earnings of over 780 million dollars,

it's not considered a big hit, since it disappointed millions of fans

Now it looks like a fifth movie is in the works and will be released in the next couple of years

No details have been made available just yet

although we're guessing it will involve some more of Indy's least favourite animals

Celebs have equal famous pals

like action stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney

who met through mutual acquaintances more than 25 years ago

But some of these close friendships were made on set during the shooting of a movie

Let's zoom in on some of these ultimate celebrity friendships!

Working on a film can come with a lot of waiting and long hours

So why not make it yourself easier by connecting with your co-stars

Like Dane DeHaan and Daniel Radcliffe, who starred together in 2013’s ‘Kill Your Darlings’

They had a strong connection right from the start and Dan knows why

Dane and I are quite like-minded, in terms of our work, and how we approach our work

we both, you know, we both like working hard and we both

we like you know intense films that demand a lot of us

and I think we're in the acting world for the same reasons and I think we get on for that reason

Being a teen star and working on a series together is also a place where many friendships have begun

To name a few, there’s Ashley Benson & Shay Mitchell who starred on ‘Pretty Little Liars

Michelle Williams & Busy Phillips who both played in ‘Dawson’s Creek

Jennifer Aniston & Courtney Cox who met on the set of ‘Friends

and don’t forget James Franco and Seth Rogen who started hanging out between takes for the cult hit series ‘Freaks and Geeks

That last pair have not only given us one of Hollywood’s funniest friendships

but also numerous hilarious movie collaborations. Like ‘The Disaster Artist’, ‘The Interview’ and ‘This Is The End’

In 2015, the action comedy ‘Hot Pursuit’ came out

It wasn’t a particularly good movie and didn’t score very positive reviews

but it did give us a really cute friendship

Sofia Vergera and Reese Witherspoon really put the best in besties

But work friendships aren’t always between actors

Another match made in friendship heaven is Eva Longoria and her hairstylist Ken Paves

Making this pairing even more fun, Victoria Beckham often companies the two

And when these three are together, weird things are bound to happen

And then finally, two ladies who’ve been in each other’s lives pretty much forever

Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz

Although their friendship dates back for over two decades

the two have only ever starred in one movie together, the action film ‘Bandidas

But Salma loves sharing a good throwback every now and then

Of course the two are still as beautiful as they were back then

These stars clearly show that Hollywood life isn’t all air kisses and fake smiles in front of the cameras

Under all the glitter and glamour it's possible to make friends for life even when you're famous

where he played the role of American poet Allen Ginsberg

He has worked extremely hard to set himself apart from the Harry Potter roles

that made him a household name and continuously takes odd-ball roles for that same reason

In the year 2000, a search was on to find the best child actor to portray junior wizard Harry Potter in the big screen adaptation of the popular books

Only a month before filming began, the role went to eleven-year-old Daniel Radcliffe

a decision that would change the young man's life forever

I don’t think, when you’re 11, you don’t take on, you don’t think about those things, really

So no, I mean, I didn’t think,

all I was aware of was I was having a really good time . I was only thinking about...

well maybe 11 year olds do think of the future, I’m not sure

. I’m not sure I did. I was just having such a really good time on set that I wasn’t really worried about that

yeah, it was a really gradual process of realizing what a big thing that I was in the middle of, I think

and you know, I obviously appreciate it now, but I think it definitely took some getting used to the idea

No, at the time he definitely didn’t seem to be aware of just how big the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise would be

I’ll never consider myself a movie star

because if you’re a movie star, if you consider yourself as being a movie star, you consider yourself as being famous

and I think people who consider themselves as being famous often aren’t very nice

Interestingly, it wasn’t until the third movie of the series that Radcliffe was sure he even wanted to be an actor

I’d always enjoyed it, I loved being on set, but I think 14 was time I looked around and was like

ok I think I want to do this for the rest of my life

I have to work out how to do that, how to get better at it, how to make my way in the industry

. But yeah, I think it was probably when I was like 14

Despite carrying the weight of a multi-billion dollar franchise on his young shoulders

Daniel remained down to earth about his fame

I'll take it as a compliment if, you know, 500 girls want to run round after me

I will definitely take that compliment

You know, I think it's always in those moments that you have to have an awareness of what's really going on,

and you know, it's not just for me. It's about Potter and it's about you know, it's

I think you have to keep those moments in perspective by just saying, you know: It's not all you, Dan

At age 17, at least partly in order to show people that he was ready for more adult roles

Radcliffe took to the stage in a production of the play ‘Equus

Controversy ensued, as the show contained a nude scene

but for the young actor, it was all about improving at his craft

I think I get better every time I go onstage

And I learn something more, and there’s something about having to act out the same story every night and make it fresh and new every night

while also trying to refine it and make it better, is a really great challenge as an actor, and one that I think,

I think everyone should do stage

Wrapping up the Potter franchise was hard, but Radcliffe, for one, was ready to move on

People like to think of Potter as being a handcuff, you know, and actually something that will hold you back

But actually, it’s just the most amazing opportunity in the world.

You’ve got an amazing platform to then build another career on top of that. And that’s all I’ve you know, tried to do, and want to keep doing, and you know it’s...

yeah, it’s, I don’t, at the moment I haven’t found it too hard. Hopefully that continues

Since then, the young star has really broadened his repertoire,

starring in a wide variety of very different movies

, from the Beat Poet biopic ‘Kill Your Darlings’, to his first romantic comedy ‘What If’

, to the scary horror flick ‘The Woman in Black’, from the slick studio movie ‘Now You See Me 2

to the indie drama ‘Imperium’, to the kids adventure ‘Playmobil: The Movie

You know, I’m always looking for things that are different, not just from Potter but from ‘Woman in Black’ or from, now from ‘Imperium’ and ‘Kill Your Darlings

I want everything to be different from the last, hopefully

Daniel Radcliffe has grown up before our eyes on screen

and perhaps his greatest magic trick is how he’s transformed from a boy wizard into a powerful adult actor

I just want to be an actor, you know, I don’t necessarily want to be like

a mega-star of a franchise or anything like that, you know?

? I’ve done that, and that was great fun, but that’s not what I envisage necessarily for the rest of my caree

One way to bond with costars is to make fun of them and pull off some well-meant pranks

Sure, some enjoy it more than others, and there are a lot of jokers around

so let's take a look at more of the most mischievous action stars

When making movies, actors spend long days on set,

and often they’re just sitting around, waiting for their scenes to come up

So what do they do in their spare time?

They annoy the rest of the cast of course!

And some take it a bit too far

Josh Hutchinson for instance once borrowed a dead body prop and hid it in the bathroom of Jennifer Lawrence’s trailer when they shot ‘The Hunger Games

Poor Jen was apparently so terrified when she found it, she actually peed herself

Some film sets just seem really fun!

Take ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ for instance

Michael Fassbender was a huge fan of the song ‘Blurred Lines

so Hugh Jackman arranged a little surprise for him

There were a lot of ‘Blurred Lines

We were inspired by Michael Fassbender, and I will be honest, we were inspired by ‘Blurred Lines’

but Michael in particular was inspired.So I a sound guy, everytime he walked on set, play it

And things escalated on the pranking front quite quickly from there

before long the whole cast was hitting each other

The young guys had this game,

which was basically if you can get someone to look at this

If you make this sign, and it's below your waist.. okay?

It's not that complex, than you get to punch them

We had a lot of punches flying

It was Jen Lawrence that got us playing it

And she was a demon

but yeah,There was this one time where I got a bit too much into it with Hugh

and he's a big guy, he can take it,But

by the end of the night,

so he left me bruised and bad. The next he got me I can take him

Another movie where the actors had to bring their pranking A-game was ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’

When you have Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black in one picture, jokes are bound to happen

There is a weird competition. Do you know nerf guns?

It's a toy gun that shoots like soft bullets

And I don't know who started it, but there was kind of an ongoing war of shooting people just in their pines with this nerf gun

And I was constantly getting shot in the c*ck by Dwayne, the Rock, Johnson

I shot his c*ck as well, but not as often. He was the king of the c*ck shot

On set pranks aren’t always well received, though

Take Mel Gibson, for example

Way back in 1997 he made ‘Conspiracy Theory’ alongside Julia Roberts

When the two first met, the actor had a little gift for the red headed superstar

And, well… let’s just say there’s a reason people call him Mad Mel

yeah I gave her a rat

But I don't know what is wrong with that.

it was dead

She didn't have to feed it or buy a cage or anything. She could just leave it around.

I just happened to have it spare

Another notorious prankster is Channing Tatum

When shooting ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’, he visited a sex shop and decorated Taron Egerton’s trailer with sex dolls, sex toys and some rather large ehm… prosthetics

He Also, goofed around with Jonah Hill when they were filming ’21 Jump Street’

Remember that scene when they’re running and Channing suddenly vomits on Jonah’s arm?

That wasn’t scripted but a weird joke involving oatmeal that somehow still made it into the movie

The list of onset pranks is endless and there are more really funny ones to be found
