and coded messages.

It has it all.

The game of espionage
is life or death.

Radioactive poison on the streets
of London.

She was naturally talented,
very intelligent,

and she was extremely dangerous.

So, you deny being a secret agent?

As I said before, numerous of times,

I will never deny
and I will never confirm the fact.

This whole story starts
in about 2001.

I was living in Brighton
and I was in my late 20s.

I was DJing a lot

and having an amazing time
in my life,

but also waking up
to the big picture.

Thank you very much.

I was going on an inner journey

to work out this whole
life existence mystery,

and I ended up going to have
an adventure in Africa.

So I thought I'd take my records
with me.

One night, I ended up getting
a gig in a club...

...and at the end of the night,

this girl walked by
wearing a white hoodie

so I could just see
her little cute face poking through.

We kind of caught eyes
and I ushered her over.

She was highly seductive.

She's, like, got this
piercing seduction

just oozing from her being.

Well, I haven't met any girls
that have that power.

I realised she was Russian

and that made the whole thing
quite exciting.

She gave me her number
and tells me her name.

Little did I know
where this whole thing was going

and how crazy
this whole situation was.

And here I am today,
20-odd years later,

still talking about it.

In 2010, the FBI were told

of this new young female Russian spy
coming to New York.

And her name was Anna Chapman.

Anna quickly became the face
of the story and the investigation.

Alpha, Bravo, Charlie. Mark it.

I'm Ed Foley. I spent 36 years
in surveillance.

I always joked with some
of my partners over the years,

I said if I ever wrote a book,

it would be
"If The Public Only Knew".

Because everyone is oblivious.

At any given time in Manhattan,

it's riddled with spies
from around the world,

and there's a half a dozen
operations going on.

When I first started, the Cold War
was technically still on.

It was still the Soviet Union.

You grew up with it,

us versus them type of mentality
and communism versus the West.

The Soviet organisation of terror
threatens our freedom,

our way of life, our country.

Back then, we were tasked to follow

known intelligence officers
who were here in New York City,

who had worked in the consulates
or the UN,

and had that protection
of diplomatic cover.

Those old school, professionally
trained intelligence officers.

At 10.30 last night,
the FBI caught a big one,

a colonel at the Soviet embassy
in Washington.

The FBI said he had just picked
up some classified US documents.

But by 2010, it's a different world.

I knew that the tides have shifted,
if you will.

The first time we worked Anna -
you notice her red hair?

She's young. She was maybe 28.

So I'm like, all right, you know,

give me a redhead
as a surveillance person,

I'll follow 'em all day.

She's got a blue jacket on,
which is great for surveillance.

We love loud colours. You stick out.
My team's not going to lose her.

She came here on
a house-hunting trip.

She was looking at apartments.
She was looking at some nice areas,

so it's clear to see
that she has some money.

Despite being so young,

she was going to put roots down
and live here.

So she wound up living
at 20 Exchange Place.

Her rent was maybe, you know,

$4,000 or $5,000 a month
or something.

When I was 28,
I couldn't afford that.

Still can't afford that.

Which was a red flag.

That's not normal, you know.

Where is she getting
this money from?

One of the telltale signs

of what Anna Chapman was sent here
to do came from

a covert communications message
that her handlers in Moscow sent.

You were sent here
for intelligence gathering

to make connections
in policy-making circles,

to develop intelligence networks
here inside the United States.

Everything that you have here,

your home, your car,
is and belongs to Russia.

We discovered that Anna
was actually a UK national

coming here to the United States
under a business visa.

What her ties were while she was
in the UK, it's unclear to us.

And that's where our
investigation started.

Welcome to
President Putin,

who I'm delighted to welcome here
to London.

This has been
his first trip to the West

since assuming the huge powers
and challenges

that come with
the Russian presidency.

I'm Roderic Lyne.

I became the British Ambassador
in Moscow

about two weeks after Putin
became the acting President.

Throughout that period, the British
were part of a big Western effort

to bury the Cold War

and bring Russia much more
closely into the fold.

We said we no longer consider
each other as adversaries.

We are going to work together.

Putin decided
that Russia's future should lie

by building closer relations
with the West.

The Russian economy was
in pretty dire straits.

They needed help.

The Prime Minister drinking vodka
with President Putin

in a Moscow bar.

Tony Blair saw that
there was an opportunity.

Here was a guy who wanted
to be friends.

In that first year,
we were providing as much help

as we possibly could
to help Russia get back on its feet.

The United Kingdom has become

a major hub for Russian oligarchs
and their wealth,

with London gaining the moniker
"Londongrad".

And of course, unless there was
a good reason not to give

a Russian a visa,
we would grant visas to Russians.

Later that summertime,

I got back to England
with this memory,

thinking about this Russian girl
I just met.

And then suddenly, out of the blue,
she called.

She wanted to come and visit,
but she said,

"I need to get a couple
of signatures

"for my visa to come through."

I said, "No problem.
I'll ask some friends."

And she came.
HE CHUCKLES

She gave me her flight details.
She was arriving at Heathrow.

Suddenly, I saw this girl
walk along.

She was wearing a short T-shirt
with a red star.

Better.

And I don't think Anna had been
to England before.

She was wide-eyed
and seemed really happy to be there.

We... Yeah, we got really close
straight away.

We were sharing the same bed
the first night

and it was like we were meant
to be together.

We had so much fun in Brighton.

Anya used to really like me being
her own personal chauffeur.

I was driving these cranky
stretch limousines

at the time as a job.

And she'd sit right at the back
so I could see her in the mirror,

just this, like, classy young
Russian girl

being taken somewhere posh.

From the very beginning,
the air of mystique she carried

with her was consistent.

I never really knew, ever,
what was going on in their mind.

The information I did have
was very minimal.

Obviously, she told me her name
and she told me she was Russian,

but the only thing
that really struck me

in getting to know her was when
she told me her dad was in the KGB.

In the mythology of Russian spies,
the KGB are seen

as the most valuable spies
in the Cold War.

The people willing to do
what it took

to protect the motherland,

to protect the regime,
using the most ruthless methods.

Vladimir Putin was a former KGB man.

It is at the core of his identity,

of his training,
of how he sees the world.

When the Cold War ended,
a lot of people thought,

this kind of old school spying,

well, this is the past.
It's history.

It's a magnificent setting
for the signing

of a treaty which says
that we're friends,

that, uh...

...that we're going to cast aside
old doubts

and suspicions
and welcome a new era

between the relations between your
great country and our country.

But the truth is,
Russian spying hasn't stopped.

Whether it's spreading
misinformation

and conspiracy theories,

whether it's running agents
and influence operations,

that is what they do.

CROWD CHANTING

America must play its role
in ushering in a new era of peace.

And the problem is,
we forgot our history,

closed our eyes to it.

We were all trying to make nice
with the Russians.

With old friends and former foes,

we will work tirelessly to lessen
the nuclear threat.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

The reality was
that Russia remained a superpower.

They had thousands
of nuclear weapons,

missiles and bombers
that were pointed largely

at the United States
and Western Europe.

So from a national security
perspective,

there was very much
an adversarial relationship.

SOLDIERS ALL SHOUT

Anna Chapman became the tip
of the spear.

We knew the fact that obviously,

that she was the daughter of
a Russian intel officer.

So that right there set off
our Spidey senses.

When it came to traditional spycraft
and discipline

from highly trained, hyper vigilant
intelligence officers,

she didn't have anything like that,
but she didn't have to.

She was naturally talented,
very intelligent,

and in a lot of ways
a stunner, right?

This is probably the best way
to describe it.

Her ways of doing things
were laser focused.

It's the oldest trick
in the book, right? Seduction.

She knew exactly
what she was doing.

One of the most important aspects of
the investigation was surveillance.

We needed teams to develop
a pattern of life for Anna Chapman.

With any surveillance,
you're identifying contacts,

seeing what they are interested in,
what they're tasked to do,

any anomalies or break from the norm

that you can exploit
for the investigative side.

She was pretty uneventful
during the day,

just a normal 28-year-old,
going shopping at the supermarket,

doing Bikram yoga.

Very, very routine.

But at night,
it was a different story.

She is a young socialite
in Manhattan

who loves going out at night.

♪ White shirt now red,
my bloody nose... ♪

On the night shifts,
we followed her all over town.

She would get picked up
and shuttled around

in fancy cars or high-end limos.

♪ So you're a tough guy... ♪

We watched her come out
dressed to the nines

and go out to these clubs

that were VIP-only accesses,

different parties, things like that.

We couldn't get too close to her,

but one of my team members
was monitoring her social media.

Anna became very good
at the nightclub scene,

networking, socialising.

There was just a lot of movement.

We were able to see
who she came out with,

and it seemed like
there were multiple boyfriends.

She was mission driven
and did whatever it took,

with whomever it took,
to get whatever she needed to

for the betterment of
the Russian intelligence service.

There was one night
that changed everything.

I wanted to give Anya, like,
a good club night out,

so we went up to this really good
techno night up in London.

Anya, funnily enough,
was wearing the white hoodie again,

which she was wearing
the first night I met her.

She kind of got up and wandered off
and started talking to this guy.

She must have been in there talking
to him for two or three hours.

The whole thing was like...
"Oh, what's going on?"

She said, "I ended up
really connecting with him."

So, you know,
went out with a girlfriend,

she met somebody else
and off she went.

His name was Alex Chapman.

First time I heard about Anya,

I was working with Alex at Sony.

He loved listening to music,
going out to events.

Alex turned up after a weekend

and he was brimming with enthusiasm
over this new Russian girl

he'd sort of got involved with,

and how attractive
and wonderful she was.

Quite rapidly he announced,
"We're getting married."

I always remember him saying,

"Well, you know,
it's rock and roll, isn't it?

"You've got to get a few marriages
under your belt."

I was, you know, a bit shocked.

I don't know any details
about how it came about,

but it seemed quite sudden to me.

It was quite a rush.

They'd gone on this lavish
honeymoon in Zimbabwe.

It was exotic
and he was quite taken back.

I think it was more than
he'd expected, you know.

After he got back
from the honeymoon,

they were living in London.

He was into music and partying,

just a laidback kind of
London lifestyle.

But she started getting involved

in more high level kind of circles,
social circles.

Can I have another cigarette, please?

I'm a confident guy.

My name is Nicholas Camilleri.
I'm a capital markets financier.

In the 2000s,
London was a great place to be.

There was lots of money around,
there was a big social circuit.

We used to go out
every night of the week.

We used to start out
in a restaurant,

and then we used to go
to nightclubs.

Tuesday night to Boujis,
Wednesday night to Annabel's,

Thursday night to Tramp,
Friday night to a private party.

Every week, yeah.

For ten years, you know.

Yeah.

At that time,
there were Russians everywhere.

Wealthy people, bankers,
property owners,

investors, hedge fund managers.

And there were lots
of Russian women.

One night I organised a dinner
and I invited a Mayfair socialite,

and she showed up with

this very beautiful Russian redhead
called Anya Chapman.

Tall, redhead, green eyes,
and very beautiful.

I was seated next to her
and I found her very charming,

very intelligent.

Anna was working
as a teller at Barclays Bank,

and she said she wanted
something more... exciting.

So I gave her a job
as my personal assistant.

Unclear, you know,
when she would have been recruited.

Obviously, she was very young,
probably 25, 26.

But she really started
getting developed, I think,

during the time span
that we had this investigation open.

Anna quickly became operational.

On one day, we knew it was a meet,

but it wasn't a traditional meet
that we're used to.

There was no physical
meeting somebody.

There was no handshake
at a bus stop.

If you look at the video,

there was just
a young woman shopping

at the cosmetic counter
in Saks Fifth Avenue.

And then there's a guy across
the street in Rockefeller Plaza.

It just so happens that we had
a separate investigation

into this individual,
who we knew was here

under non-official cover

for the Russian
intelligence service.

And now he was there too.

We were like, well,
that can't be a coincidence, right?

It's the middle of the day,

and we see Anna Chapman
perusing around Saks Fifth Avenue.

And it's odd - there's no real
reason for her to be there.

Roughly 60 yards across Fifth Avenue

into Rockefeller Plaza,

standing there with a bag,

was her Russian handler.

There's no real reason
for him to be there

at Rockefeller Centre, right?

He's got a day job
where he should be.

So this is not normal behaviour.

As we're assigned to work Anna,

our objective was to be even more
vigilant than usual,

because she's outfitted
with a laptop.

We keyed in on this bag
because we had seen her before

have a little laptop in this bag.

We took pictures to see
if the weight looked different.

Maybe she had the laptop in the bag.

That would tip us off
that she may be operational,

versus just out for a stroll.

That individual has a computer
in his bag

that is identifying a signal
in the air

from Anna's laptop in her bag.

The computers recognised
each other.

They perform an electronic handshake
that sends information one way

and then sends future taskings
another way.

Totally undetectable
to anyone who's watching.

Technically, as far as how
to detect it from the air,

that's, you know, much above
my expertise level,

but physically, you can never know

that Anna Chapman met
with anyone, really.

It's the new breed of spycraft,
moving away from personal meets.

Everything was this Wi-Fi exchange.

They didn't tell me, so, you know,

we're not going to tell you,
I guess.

HE CHUCKLES

These meets were really designed
to test her ability

to carry out specific instructions
and tasks that they gave her.

She kind of, quite frankly,
just took it in stride

in a very short period of time.

I mean, she's a very
savvy individual

and that's exactly why
they would have picked her.

The Russians are the best, right,
in this space.

And the reason for that is,
is they take

a 20, 30 year time horizon
when it comes to developing agents.

Mr President,
it is a great pleasure for me

to welcome you and Mrs Putina
to London,

and to underline once more

the close friendship
between our two countries.

When Putin came here in 2003,

he was playing the part
and he played the role.

He's good at that. He's a chameleon.

It is clear for everyone
that in spite of the differences

that existed before,
today we need to act jointly.

Mr President.

The intelligence that we had,
from the moment

Putin stepped into office, really,
was very concerning.

The reality is that he is a man

with a very high degree
of anger and vengeance.

Putin and the KGB officers
that were running the government

viewed the West
as a massive threat to Russia.

A massive
military exercise

described by Russian officials

as the largest in more than
20 years.

Putin insists the latest
weaponry isn't directed

at the United States.

He has the paranoid view
of a KGB man

who sees threats everywhere
against his homeland,

and who sees it as his job
to combat those threats.

Putin is projecting
himself as a leader

bent on restoring Russia's
military power and global clout.

He believes that he is the one
who's going to restore Russia

to its true status as a great power.

That is dangerous because the tools
he's willing to use to do that

include assassins,
cyber attacks, sabotage,

and the deep cover spies
operating around the world.

Anna was a social climber.

She liked to be part of a scene.

I used to like showing up with her
to business lunches

and nights when we used
to take clients out on the town.

They were all enamoured by her,
just like I was.

She was very confident,

and that's very important
when you run in those circles.

She spoke very good English.

She had an English husband
at the time.

Anna never told me much
about her personal life.

I just knew that she was married.
Separated, but married.

Through her social endeavours,

she fell in love
with this French guy,

a very wealthy financier.

And she wound up becoming
his live-in girlfriend.

It was probably
two or three years.

Life had gone by,

and out of the blue I got
a call from Anya.

I think she was reaching out
for some help,

a little bit of support.

I don't think she had
many friends at the time,

and we never really fell out
at the time we parted,

so I went to see her up in London.

She had a big fancy flat
somewhere in Mayfair.

You know, it didn't surprise me
that she was living

this type of lifestyle.

When I was with her,

she was expecting me
to buy her presents all the time.

You know, different culture,

totally different person
altogether.

She told me she was fascinated
with billionaires.

And so, I was kind of starting
to join the dots a little bit

about who she was, really.

Looking back,
a couple of friends did suggest

that maybe she was using me
to get in the country.

I think whatever happened between us
was definitely real.

But maybe, yes,
I was a stepping stone

to get on her path to become a spy.

Theoretically, Anna's cover was
that she was a realtor,

starting a business to sell New York
City properties to Russians.

I never saw her show any properties,

but, yeah, that was that was what
she purported to be.

Anna was a young entrepreneur.

She was looking
to develop, essentially,

a real estate website for buying
and selling real estate.

And really, she wanted it to be
like an international brand.

One, two, three, four.

La, la, la, la, la.

La, la, la.

When a good looking red-headed girl
walks in the room,

every guy's attention turns
and everyone wants to know

what company she works for,
who she represents.

I will, uh, shop.

I will shop, I will have
a business meeting at two o'clock.

My name is Aron Schoenfeld.
One.

I got involved in the whole
entrepreneurial scene in New York.

We were working with start-ups,
and we used to do some small events,

and it came to the events
and she clearly stood out.

It's really making me hot, this one.

We wanted to do a video shoot of her
about Entrepreneur Week.

Anna actually came over to me
at one of the events

and she's like, "This company
sounds really cool.

"Can you make that introduction
for me?"

So I facilitated that introduction
and then it gradually became,

"Hey, do you know this person?

"Do you know that person?
When's your next event?"

And I thought, she's an entrepreneur
looking to grow.

This girl really knows
how to hustle.

Now I know a lot of people
that introduced me to someone else,

and those introduced me
to someone else.

So now I know where to go
if I have something to solve.

I remember at an event,

we introduced her to the head
of an international ad agency.

He was very powerful,
knew a lot of people.

Politicians went to the parties.

They would leave together.

I think they both lived
down near Wall Street.

I don't think in our heads,
we had any doubt

what was going on with them.

For all I know, they were sharing
an apartment at a certain point.

She has a high degree
of emotional intelligence,

so she is able to make connections

with people in a very easy
and fluid way.

It comes natural to her.

A couple months after the event,
we had another event.

This is the place to do business.

She would show up with that CEO
of the global ad agency,

or the CEO of
that entertainment technology,

and they would come in together.

When she came to a party
and she left with someone,

you kind of had the idea
that something more was going on.

She was able to exact favours
from men as a result of that.

You know, many of those favours
were funding her lavish lifestyle.

Thank you.
Nice job.

She was with the powerful people
that had access

to the other powerful people,

and we just thought it was
to raise funding for her company.

But...

CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICKING

Given her technique, if you will,
to keep it professional,

she was extremely dangerous.

She didn't sleep around
with anybody.

She could have been
the First Lady of New York City.

No.

I was never aware

of any infiltration
of any spies in London.

I never questioned that
she used to like going out,

she used to like going to parties,
going to clubs.

One night I took Anya to Movida,
a prominent London nightclub,

and sitting at the next table
was Boris Berezovsky.

And he was very infamous.

He was Russia's richest man,

and he was forced to leave Russia
by Putin,

and he resettled in the UK.

I interviewed Boris Berezovsky once
in his office -

in Mayfair, where else?

The richest, most exclusive part
of London.

Big Mercedes car waiting outside
with his chauffeur.

Lots of flunkies
and people around him.

He was Putin's enemy,

and you could sense
this was a person

who was building a power base
in London to plot against Putin.

It's very important
that West recognise

who is Mr Putin, finally.

And the answer is,
Mr Putin is criminal.

I introduced Boris to Anya,

and he was quite enamoured by her,

and he wound up buying her
a bottle of champagne,

and she gave him her business card.

The next day, he called her up
and invited her to lunch,

and he sent a car to pick her up
from my office in Mayfair,

and she went to lunch
with him daily.

It became a daily habit.

It's not clear exactly
when Anna Chapman became

Anna Chapman, the spy.

I mean, some people have speculated
that she was sent to Britain

in the first place to become a spy,
to get a passport, to get cover.

Others believe it was during
her time in Britain

that her value became clear
and she was recruited.

They could see she could get close
to influential people,

people like Boris Berezovsky.

That is something very valuable
to Russian intelligence.

Once, Vladimir Putin described
people in two groups,

one of them enemies,
other one traitors.

Enemy, he might call people
working as a journalist.

Traitors, mostly people who worked
in the same system

what Vladimir Putin belongs to.

And my husband
Alexander Litvinenko,

and Boris Berezovsky,
was one of them.

Putin said if you be traitor,
you need to be destroyed.

UNTRANSLATED RUSSIAN SPEECH

Traitors will kick
the bucket, trust me.

These people betrayed their friends,
their brothers in arms.

Whatever they got in exchange
for it,

those 30 pieces of silver
they were given,

they will choke on them.

I'm Leon Panetta,
former Secretary of Defense,

former Director of the CIA,
former Member of Congress,

former Chief of Staff
to the President.

President Bush said
that he looked into Putin's eyes

and could see somebody
who he could relate to.

And Bob Gates,
former Secretary of Defense,

made the comment

that when he looked into the eyes
of Vladimir Putin,

he saw KGB, KGB, KGB.

For all of the symbols
of rapprochement,

Putin was a hardliner.

A lot of politicians failed
to understand

the psychology, the mentality,
the history,

the culture
that they were up against.

Russia is led by its intelligence
and security apparatus,

but it has an incredibly powerful
dark side.

And that dark side
is incredibly bloody.

This was the arrest

of Russia's most wealthy man,
Mikhail Khodorkovsky,

by President Putin's
secret service, the FSB.

President Putin's critics claim
the arrest is an attempt

to stifle Khodorkovsky's support
for opposition groups.

Russia plays hardball.

They don't follow the rules.

An award-winning
Russian journalist known

for her critical coverage
of the war in Chechnya

has been shot dead
in her Moscow apartment block.

Anna Politkovskaya was an outspoken
critic of President Vladimir Putin

and had received
numerous death threats.

Vladimir Putin was trying
to tighten his grip on power,

trying to go after his enemies,

and he was even willing
to kill them.

I met my husband, Sasha,
Alexander Litvinenko,

when he started to work
for security service, FSB.

I remember it was end of July 1998,
and he said, "We have a new boss."

I said, who is his boss? He said,
"Somebody from Saint Petersburg."

Sasha was involved
in one internal investigation

about corruption in FSB,

and Berezovsky asked him
to meet Putin to discuss this case.

Berezovsky believed
Putin might agree to do something,

but Sasha from this meeting
immediately realised

it's nothing going to be changed.

Putin has not any interest of this.

Almost straight after that,

Sasha and his colleagues went
to a press conference.

Suddenly we have a group
of officers from FSB

talking about corruption,
and this is all on prime time TV.

I was really proud of him.

But everybody were shocked.

And, uh, it became news number one.

After that, Putin tried
to destroy my husband.

He definitely would be sentenced,

he might be prosecuted,

and he might be killed.

Just a few months after that,
we escaped from Russia,

and finally, we stopped here in UK.

Sasha was nervous.

I tried to say, "No, no, no, they're
not going to kill people abroad."

He said, "No, Marina, it's serious."

This all happened almost
in the same time

Boris Berezovsky decided
to settle here in London,

and Sasha's concern was, of course,
most about Boris Berezovsky.

Alexander Litvinenko told me
that Boris...

They signed decree,
Putin signed the law

which allow them
to kill people abroad

if they identify them as enemies,
without any court.

And they will try to kill us.

The Home Secretary granted political
asylum to Boris Berezovsky.

GLASS TINGS

I ask you to give a very warm
welcome to Mr Boris Berezovsky.

APPLAUSE

That went down very badly in Moscow.

I was in a meeting with the head
of their domestic security service,

the ex-KGB General Patrushev,

a very close associate of Putin.

He said, "Your government must send
Berezovsky back here..."

I used to let Anna stay out
for two hours

at lunchtime to have lunch
with Boris every day.

She used to come back to me

and tell me what Boris said
over lunch,

and she used to say how much
he hated Putin,

and he was a vocal critic.

The West should recognise
that Russia is not partner.

Russia is not ally.
Russia is real...

Putin's Russia, Putin's Russia is
real enemy of the West.

Putin saw both Berezovsky
and later Litvinenko

as personal enemies

who were delving into areas
which were across a red line.

Putin has said in public,
in Russia on the media,

that any intelligence officer
that betrays the country

is a piece of scum who'll be
hunted down like a dog.

November 1st of 2006

our British citizenship,
and we were very happy.

But this all changed after midnight
when Sasha became extremely sick.

Like in the movie,

you can say your whole life changed
from before and after.

He believed it was poisoning
from very beginning.

From his hospital bed,
Litvinenko's last words

were a message
for Russia's President Putin,

relayed to the world
by his friend Alex Goldfarb.

You may succeed
in silencing one man,

but the howl of protest from around
the world will reverberate,

Mr Putin, in your ears
for the rest of your life.

May God forgive you.

In Sasha's death statement,

it was obvious he accused
Vladimir Putin of killing him.

The body of Alexander Litvinenko

contained a large quantity of
highly radioactive material,

and it had to have been ingested.

It fell out of the blue.

The claim that Russia and
the Russian state had been using

radioactive poison
on the streets of London.

And yet, there it was.

It was reckless, it was dangerous,

and literally hundreds of people
could have died.

From London to Moscow,
the poisoning death

has investigators scouring
for contamination.

Putin personally
behind this.

Putin personally organised
this crime.

Exactly what Alexander Litvinenko
told me,

that, "Boris, they will try
to kill us."

And he unfortunately was correct.

And I'm not able
to exclude at all

that they are trying to do
the same against of me.

How worried are you
about your own safety?

It's one thing to do it in Russia.

It's an entirely different thing
to do that in the UK,

and it's yet a further step to try
and do that in the United States.

And of course, then,
the big question,

at the end, what does that
next chapter look like?

Over the course
of this investigation,

we became aware
that there was a pattern

to Anna's operational activity.

It was usually every two weeks
where she would be

virtually meeting
her Russian handler.

These would take place
at Starbucks coffee shops

throughout Manhattan.

So she would be sitting there,
maybe on her phone

or, you know, with her coffee
in front of her, eating something.

And the Russian handler would
drive by in his vehicle,

or in the instance of Saks,
you know,

be standing across the street.

This happened every two weeks.

So, Saks Fifth Avenue happened
to be one of the locations.

Starbucks here in downtown.

There was another Starbucks
within a Barnes and Noble,

like, right in Midtown
where this happened.

So she iterated through
a series of sites.

It's pre-planned,
the covert communication system,

the messages back and forth,

the operational acts
which we have videos of.

It wasn't just Anna Chapman.

It became clear
that this was a network.

There's this massive group
of deep cover officers

within the United States

who are trying to develop
and steal America's closest secrets.

There were ten spies out there and
the FBI was following all ten spies.

They're active in Washington, DC,
they're active in New York.

They're active in London.

It's going on today
in capitals around the world.

This is really warfare.

In President Medvedev, I've found

meeting with President Obama
in Washington, DC.

But at the same time, we needed
to go and arrest the network.
