We titled this episode "Six Hours"
because it is the amount of time that Grace has calculated
that she and Morgan can be out
before they are exposed to a dangerous amount of radiation.
It was very important to us, uh, that this episode
really illustrate just how devastated the world has been.
I don't ever want to be here!
This episode really is about Morgan and Grace
and their very different viewpoints on being parents
and, specifically, being parents to baby Mo.
Morgan, as he was at the end of season six,
is nurturing that baby.
He's the one waking up and taking care of it.
And you can see this just haunted look
on Grace's eyes as she's watching the baby cry.
She is not emotionally connected.
It was about creating kind of that sense of tension
and, uh, at the same time, I think,
start to make the audience wonder
if there was something more underneath it,
uh, as we'll later find out.
This episode required our baby Mo
to do a lot of crying.
Come on.
But there was no problem there.
In this episode, the baby is a...
Is a fantastic crier.
It's an Emmy-worthy performance from this baby.
Did you find the formula?
No.
I've been working on something else instead.
We wanted this episode to start off at a place
of this kind of bizarre take on a family road trip
through the nuclear apocalypse.
We started to think about other apocalyptic fiction
that we're fans of, and, you know, of course,
"Mad Max" came to mind, and we thought it would be really cool
to do something that was kind of a-a nod to that.
It's safe for all of us.
This vehicle is kind of hermetically sealed
with duct tape and plastic, um,
and has fuel tanks so they can drive a long range.
And it also means you need a... You need a very particular
kind of car seat.
The initial inspiration Andrew and I had
for Bea and Fred was "Invisible Man."
And based on some research we've done on survivors of,
uh, Hiroshima and other nuclear events,
just seeing, you know, what long-term effects
of radiation burns would look like.
They've got her. She's here. Ohh!
Mommy's here. Mommy's here.
Bea and Fred kidnap baby Mo and are threatening to take her
into what will probably be her certain death.
It does something for Grace. I think it starts
to awaken kind of that maternal instinct.
You're gonna get her killed.
Never.
For Morgan,
seeing Grace take even that first step
makes him realize that, you know, his dream
of having a family again might not be totally gone.
These two people... Morgan and Grace...
are able to find a way forward together with shared purpose,
and, ultimately for Grace, that's about, uh,
connecting with this baby in a way that she never thought she could.
Morgan Jones?
How do you know that name?
I think we can see from the look on Morgan's face
when Howard tells him Victor is alive
that he's not too thrilled.
Both Grace and Morgan know what Strand did
at the end of season six. He tried to kill Morgan.
Whatever Strand's building, it's not gonna be what we have.
She's right. It's gonna be better.
This moment speaks to a larger conflict
that's gonna play out over the course of the season,
which is a bit of a Morgan versus Strand,
where Strand wants to shove it in Morgan's face
how much he beat him
and how he's going to do what Morgan couldn't.
Morgan, look at that.
She's crawling!
And the crawling leads to the discovery of the food.
What the hell?
God!
They'll always remember Mo's first crawl
actually kept them alive.
Powdered milk.
- We got powdered milk! - Yeah!
At the end of the episode, when we see a figure
walk up to the burnt box that says "Morgan Jones"
and we see that figure lift the head up
and we see him take his mask off and we realize it's Emile's face
looking back at walker Emile,
um, and, uh, we realize that he actually had a twin brother.
When we cast Demetrius Grosse in the role of Emile
and we saw his audition and then we saw his dailies come in,
we knew, you know, he was an amazing actor
and he really brought something special to this role.
These are good. What's in 'em?
A chef never reveals his secrets.
Besides, it's my brother's recipe.
We wanted to find a way to bring this character...
or to bring Demetrius back... even if it wasn't as Emile.
Mr. Jones may have got the best of me today.
But there's always tomorrow.
We got the chance to do it, and can't wait
to see what people think of... of that episode.
