Being Portuguese means pride,

but also means responsibility.

As a coach coming from nowhere,

I knew I had to win
the Champions League with Porto,

then conquer England, Europe,

and then take on the world.

And I never had a moment of doubt.

Well, what a pulsating atmosphere

around Anfield here.

I think Mourinho knows
his team are in for a battle.

Chelsea not as watertight
as usual at the start of this season.

Possibly conceding one or two more goals

than certainly they did
when they won the title.

First season, we won the Premier League.
Second season, we won the Premier League.

Third season, we won FA Cup, Carling Cup.

The fourth season, everything changed.

A lot of stories between
the owner, Roman Abramovich,

and manager José Mourinho.

No smoke without fire, perhaps. We'll see.

Roman showed over his years at Chelsea

that he was very ruthless
in relation to the results.

Roman was never easy to deal with,

but José handled him very well
till the last, uh, year.

There has been rumors
that Mr. Abramovich wasn't happy

with the style
Chelsea have been playing in lately.

He'd like them to be
a bit more expansive, more creative.

Things were changing
very quickly, for sure.

There was more direct contact with Roman.

He would dip his toe in
at the training ground,

whereas the first two years,
we kind of had no involvement with him.

Abramovich,
incredible passion for football,

but knowing nothing about the situation.

Roman and him was...

was having a bit of a battle
regarding transfer market,

players that he didn't want
or José didn't want to sign.

And that led to rupture.

£30 million.

Shevchenko was
the most expensive star Mourinho bought.

Ironically, a player
he plainly did not want.

Shevchenko was on the table
because of connections with the boss,

connections with agents.

And I didn't want to sign him.

But I never told him no,
so he's also my responsibility.

You could sense a change
in terms of feeling around the club

to do with the politics changing.

It felt like, from José being, like, this...
the leader of this gang,

and he told me,

"The boss is in Sardinia

with his boats and the people
that work in his boats."

"They play football against guys
from the hotel,

and they are losing."

"Can you go there to win a game for him?"

I told, "No, Peter.
I have training today."

"I have to prepare for tomorrow.
I cannot go."

And he was not happy with that.

José looks like he's had
a trip to the hairdresser

since we last saw him.

And Roman Abramovich is here as well.

Football is changing ever so quickly.

And the power of owners,
the expectations of owners,

the way they invest in a club
to get return,

and the way they perceive their assets

collides into how José perceives
football success.

"Are you happy we lost?"

When those cracks become visible
to us as players,

it has a clear effect.

I still feel kind of responsible for that,

Some players would've given
anything for him. I was that player.

It's disappointing how it ended,
if I'm honest.

I absolutely loved him and adored him
and was more upset than anybody.

He had a... a magical spell over us.

He was the guy who believed in me.

He was the guy who kept me standing

when... when I had a lot of adversity.

But if there's one thing
that I understood that day...

the owner is always right.

When you give everything,
you expect everything.

But the reality is
that football doesn't have a big memory.

What for other guys would be
an amazing job,

for me is always not good enough.

And I think that's not fair.

It hurts. But that's football.

Is it not just a curse
of your own early success?

But that shouldn't be a curse.

A curse is people without success.

That's a curse.
Success shouldn't be a curse.

You know, I arrive where I arrive

by myself,

being absolutely genuine.

I felt that I was popular with the people,

not as popular with the ownership.

I don't go for dinners. I don't do PR.

I am who I am.
I live my life the way I live.

And many, many times,

I... I paid for that.

I mean, I grew up a player's son,

but I still think
I don't belong to the tribe.

I was different.

As a kid, my father used me
a lot as a ball boy,

but I was not a ball boy.

I was watching matches,
and I was giving him information.

I was giving him tips.

I was in dressing rooms.
I listened to team talks.

I traveled with players.

I jumped of happiness with them.
I cried of sadness with them.

But I was not one of them.

I was always outside.

And I always felt
that boy is Mourinho's son.

And when I go to professional football,

I still was Mourinho's son.

I was so proud to be Mourinho's son.
I'm still is, of course.

But... it is heavy.

I think he is the opposite of me
in terms of, uh,

everybody loved him.

Everybody loved him.

Because the man he was,

My father was really
a phenomenal human being.

I'm not even close to him.

My experience helping my dad in his career

showed me exactly what football can be.

I learned that it doesn't matter
about the past.

Results make the decision.

If the results are good,
you are not going to be sacked.

If the results are bad,
you are going to be sacked.

I remember Christmas Day.

Telephone rang, and my dad sacked.

A few months before,

he took the little team
to the Portuguese Cup final,

which was historical.

A few months later on Christmas Day,

he was sacked.

You remember how that affected him?

He was tremendously good
hiding his emotions.

But that told me,

if I go in this direction
and I want to become a coach,

it can happen.

After Chelsea, what are
the opportunities in front of you?

I don't remember. But honestly,

uh, I had...

I had some contacts with Barcelona, yeah.

I had some contacts with Barcelona.
I had a couple of meetings.

I gave them my view

of what their situation was
at every level,

that I knew, of course, well
from my time in the club.

At Barcelona,

I was very, very lucky
to be an assistant coach

with the best players in the world.

And best players in the world,
they demand quality work.

For a young guy, it's a big challenge.

I was working a lot for them,
but I was also getting a lot from them.

You learn with their behavior
and the style of play.

And at Barcelona,
the style of football was everything.

They moved the ball so well.
Beautiful club.

Back then, I was working with Mr. Robson.

José was a good-looking chap.

Very shy, a bit nervous, perhaps.

At the same time,
he had an air of confidence about him.

Maybe we have to change some.

We probably have to change...

He had a very small,
minor coaching qualification.

But he was bright, and he stood beside me.

Very often behind me,
the best-paid interpreter in the world.

I remember saying, "I want you to tell me
exactly what everybody is saying."

The translator job is a big bullshit.

I was goalkeeper coach.

I was the analyst. I was the scout.

Because I studied
sports science in university,

I could even help in the gym.

I was doing everything for the boss.

If you speak English and nobody else does,
that doesn't mean you are a translator.

I have worked hard.

It means you are academically
at a superior level.

But I was not a translator.

I was Mr. Bobby Robson's assistant coach.

We worked together for one season.

Then the next season come Mr. Van Gaal.

I was the successor of, uh,
Mr. Bobby... of Sir Bobby Robson.

And I said to José,
"Maybe you can proceed as my assistant."

It was a big gamble
because I don't know him.

You have to show everyone
you are good enough to work at that level.

I had Ronaldo, Stoichkov, Pep.

I had Figo.

He had very good relationship
with the players.

One of his talents was
to analyze the other teams.

He was very precise, very professional.

And, uh, I think he had,
like, a... a talent for that.

We have found José Mourinho,

assistant and, in this case,
spy for Van Gaal.

Louis Van Gaal always has
his notebook on the bench,

but I don't see you with a spy pad.

Do you keep it all in your head or...

He started scouting and analyzing

like a coach, you know, for the team.

I'm going to start today.

But I have to note a few things down.

His career starts in that moment.

I had situations of being in Valencia,

watching the opponent of the next week.

I finished the match, drive to Barcelona,

arriving at the Camp Nou

just five minutes before the warm-up.

Then after the game,

I go home and finish the report
of the opposition for the next week

until 2:00, 3:00 a.m.

The next morning, training session.

And then every week,
repeating and repeating and repeating.

When I see assistants
that say they are tired with their work,

I tell them, "Fuck off, man."

"You don't know what is
to be tired of being an assistant."

In that season, in three months,

my wife's mother passed away,

my sister passed away,

and my daughter was born.

It was an incredibly hard period,

but I was doing absolutely everything.

I was doing everything
to deserve to be at that level

under a difficult situation.

This was my life, to fight for my career.

But a young guy, uh,
Portuguese, coming from abroad,

without a name as a big player before,
you have to prove.

Today, tomorrow, and always
with Barça in my heart.

Mourinho's departure
signals the end of an era.

Let's look at the bookies' odds as to
where they think he's gonna go next.

After Chelsea, I remember that, uh,
José got approached by a few clubs.

Inter came in, Real Madrid came in,
and Barcelona came in.

I hope I'm not saying
anything disruptive here.

Rijkaard is leaving Barcelona
after five years.

He won the Champions League

and the Primera Liga title
two years ago, but nothing since.

José was going to Barcelona.

they were really amazing.

an honor to help them reach that dream.

but the player does it.

And we discover the solution together.

It's perfect.

José in Inter was rock and roll.

It was like, fuck,
every day, something was happening.

He changed my game.
He made me more of a killer.

So when I entered the field,
I was feeling untouchable.

I could destroy anyone.

That's the year when I become top scorer.

So I scored goals, goals, goals.

I'm famous for having goals
that players can't repeat.

That is my ego saying this,
but it's also facts.

José and I, we have the same target,
and that's to win.

I'll do anything to win.

He gets in your head.

He pushed me

But because it was my last season,

We were happy with the draw.
