They want to win like I want to win.

where the majority of the coaches

were former very good players.

So to get into a world
that was controlled and dominated

and was a closed circle

was very hard.

I had to fight that battle
and prove that I was different.

I wanted to make history.
And nothing was going to stop me.

When I joined Chelsea,

it was a pretty unique period.

So we got Roman, the owner,

who was the first really wealthy guy
to come into English football.

He now has more pure cash
than anyone in the world.

His wealth is now greater
than the yearly product of 158 countries.

And he wanted to make Chelsea
the best club in Europe.

So we started to look at getting a coach

who could really bring success.

José! José!

The objective was... was very clear.

Win the Premier League.

The biggest rivals was
a team of invincibles.

History has been made.

Arsenal have gone through
an entire league campaign

without losing.

Then I was going against the biggest club
in England, Manchester United.

Manchester United are champions of England

for the eighth time in eleven seasons.

And Chelsea at this time had...

Zero Premier Leagues.

So we had to fight against the ghosts.

And the ghosts were,
Chelsea's never going to win.

He's gonna need time, like his team,

to get to the culture of our English game.

It is a different league.
This is a tough league in which to manage.

I was thinking about, this is Arsenal,
and this is Manchester United.

We have to be different than them.

So I wanted players that could give
Chelsea a different football idea.

I liked some of the Chelsea players.
A lot.

Obviously, John Terry, Frank Lampard,

players with an incredible potential,

but just needed the last... push.

And I knew that we had the financial power
to attack the market.

So I started to build the puzzle.

Unveiled today, three players
who cost a combined £24 million.

We signed Arjen Robben and Petr Čech.

Amazing goalkeeper.

He said, "Everybody starts
from the same starting line."

"It's up to you how well you do."

That was pretty much all I wanted to hear.

Then I did bring
two players from Portugal.

Paulo Ferreira and Ricardo Carvalho.

Thanks, and welcome to Chelsea.

Most of the players playing for José,
they want to go with him.

When the official news broke

that Mourinho was going to Chelsea,

I remember perfectly,
I called my wife and said,

"Maria, start packing.
We're moving to London."

But I also wanted some physical profiles.

Didier Drogba's a Chelsea man

after putting pen to paper
on a £24 million move from Marseille.

The most important reason
I joined Chelsea was meeting José.

He told me, "If you want to be
the king of Marseille, you can stay there,

but if you want to compete
and become the best in Europe,

come and play for me."

I spoke to Mr. Roman about transfers.

I was saying,
"Look, that's my first option,

but I have here my second option,

my third option, my fourth, and my fifth."

He used to say, "You think about football.

we go into the shower,
and I end up on my own in the shower

and José walks in.

He turned to me and said,

"You are the best player in the world."

I was like, "Oh,"

certainly not agreeing with it,
but I was like, "Well, thanks, boss."

He said, "You are the best player."

"But you can't be yet
because you haven't got titles."

"Until you win titles,
that won't be the case."

I don't think he thought I was
the best player because I wasn't.

But what he did was boosted me up.

I was like, "Best player in the world.
José Mourinho thinks so."

He gave me a challenge.

"You better win some titles."

One of the biggest effects on my life,
a conversation in the shower.

That shows you the power
of good man management, I guess.

Yeah, I wasn't as fortunate as Frank
to have him in the shower.

But he said, "Listen, you're my captain."

I just remember sitting there
as a 24, 25-year-old, going,

"Wow, the manager believes in me."
That's all I needed to hear.

There was a picture
of the Premier League up.

There was a very clear mindset of,
this is what we're going to win.

From those first team meetings
to the very first game against Man United,

the words and the terminology
he would use in those meetings...

"We're gonna fuck them.
We're gonna win the league."

"We're gonna take the trophy off of them."

We cannot lose.

We cannot lose.

He made me... wanna fight for him.

We were an army.

We were going to battle.

Expectations could not be
any higher at Stamford Bridge.

Having dabbled in his own version
of fantasy football,

it's time for Mourinho
to play the real thing,

starting against Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Premier League is a tough league,
make no mistake about it.

It's the hardest league in the world,
no question about that.

So I was thinking,

"Let's see what he can do."

The arrival of a new, high-profile coach

has provoked
quite unprecedented excitement

among Chelsea fans and their owner.

When I'm there on the touchline,

I feel in my... in my world.

In our head has been our tackling.
We're first to everything, eh?

As a coach, the best tool in football is

your eyes.

There is no information
like your eyes can give to you.

I look, you look.

I see more than you.

He just had that... that calmness about him

because the level of detail about the
opposition and how we was gonna beat 'em.

On the way again here,
but Drogba's effort is wild.

Our philosophy was based
on very simple principles,

a replica of my personality.

With me, there was no training session

without doing what you do
on Saturdays and Sundays.

I remember a coach in Porto.

His philosophy was
if you don't touch the ball,

you will arrive to the match
with ball desire.

You will be angry of ball.

Of course, he was sacked.

It was short exercises,
a lot of intensity.

The goal was to exceed the intensity
of the game on the weekend.

Playing against Didier
every day in training

was worse than playing
in half my league games.

So when it got to the weekend,

it was like, "This is fairly easy."
Like nothing could happen.

Cole, deflection, and in.

Whoever we play against,
we're gonna win the game.

Two wins, two clean sheets.
A taste of things to come.

Uh, André,
he's my eyes all over the world.

He was very keen on game preparation.

I think that was the breakthrough
in terms of match analysis.

that we were doing at the time.

I remember we were due to play Bolton.

He's not very good in the air."

And he's spitting on the mic.

And it was just like, wow,

who gets footage
from someone's training ground?

I'm still not sure
where he got the footage.

Tiago, made himself a yard.

Great finish. That is a top strike.

Here comes Lampard.

Lampard against Niemi to make it 2-1.

And he's done it, very coolly indeed.

Training was top-level.

The way he managed
the group was top-level.

Then you go, "Yeah, fine.
This is why he's confident."

He didn't have to say anything
to make you aware

you could get on the wrong side of him.

The way he carried himself
made you feel that.

And he could be brutal.

Physically, you had to be very robust.

You need to make sure

high-fiving everyone, cuddles,

and gets to me and walks out.

I'm like, "Oh shit, I've upset him."

No, no,
it's just because I'm not training.

I'm like to the physio, "Inject me.
Strap me up. I'm going to train."

He's like, "You're mad."

I go out and train.

You just get a little seal of approval
of a nod of going,

"Yeah, that's the type of player I want."

If it's a pain you cannot cope, inject.

I played with broken shoulders,
and he said,

"Come on, you're still better
than every goalkeeper in the league

with broken shoulders. Carry on."

I'm like, "Okay, I'll do that."

For him, I would give everything.

I would leave that pitch
in a coffin for him.

I've never seen a group of individuals
follow one person

like we did him.

It comes to Lampard.

Drogba! Wonderfully worked.

Most of the games, we would win 1-0,

but his thinking was, "Win, win, win."

"Don't worry about anything else.
Just go in and win."

We were so difficult to break
that you scored 1-0,

and you almost feel like, "Job done."

We didn't care as players.

with that kind of A-list celebrity

No one failed to notice
he's a very attractive man

of a certain age.

besotted by the man, actually.

I can look at the back page
of the newspapers for the first time.

I can bear to look
at the touchline in football.

I can bear to look
at a football match, full stop.

We'd become
this kind of worldwide attention

because of him, which was quite new.

José, which is more handsome,

Somebody makes a comment about me,
they sell themselves.

I sell. That's as simple as that.

You want to know my team tomorrow?

Full of those things,

in the Premier League.

They'd say,

He put family ahead of everything.

You can't underestimate the importance
of those connections with players

to get the best out of them.

He orchestrated us as a group.

He got every single last drop
out of us as players.

When we reached
the last part of the season,

we knew we can win it.

We were a fantastic team.
We were winning most weeks.

We felt a little bit invincible,
and we kind of were, you know.

We had some games left to win the league.

the politics changing around the club.

But we'd seen him for two seasons.

It felt like from José being
the leader of this gang,

now other people
were having conversations.

I got a sense the manager
wasn't so happy with that.

You're either with him or against him.

His charisma and leadership type

can create those emotions.

You create so much attachment to him,

and you devote yourself
so much to the leader,

that can lead to big break-ups.

When you've been with him,
you understand what he can do

and what he can unlock

and... and what he can bring.

But unless the environment
can cope with that,

you might as well not have him

'cause he'll leave you broken.

I felt betrayed.

I needed revenge.
