I'm gonna take this compass
and this heading

and it looks like
straight that direction

and just keep walking.

I don't know the distance.
I don't know the time frame.

It might be a mile,
it might be 20 miles.

I don't know. There's no trail.

It's not really a hike at all.

It's put 50, 60 pounds
on your back and slog.

There's gonna be overnights in places

where you're technically lost
in large predator country

and it's gonna be really difficult.

I just want to find Brooke,
and we can do this together.

Brooke and I have been
married 18 years.

We have two kids,
and we live in two places.

Right now we're in Michigan,

but most of the time
you can find us in Alaska.

Let's get to the other side.

Going out on this challenge
is right up our alley.

We've always thought about just
dropping really deep off grid.

Really just ditch society
for a while.

It's a beautiful hide.

Brooke and I both lived way
outside the box.

We've lived in a 12 x 12 cabin

for 2 1/2 years in northern Alaska.

We spent eight months together
in the Aleutian Islands

one year in big predator
country completely alone.

We've roughed it.

We just feel like
we have all the skills:

Hunting, and fishing, and trapping,

and we've done
it the hard way most of our life

so this isn't that much of a stretch.

I think if you're stuck out
there with the wrong person

it would just be hell on Earth,
but if you're stuck out there

with the right person,
with the right priorities,

the right mind-set I think
it's gonna be a big benefit.

We're playing as a team
and just gonna do all we can.

I have a real strong suspicion that

I'm on one side of the land

and Brooke is on the other,

and it's gonna be
a murderously long hike

from my side to her side

'cause I know darn well
she's that direction.

From the helicopter it looked like

this would be a sweet spot to start.

Easy to walk through,
I'm not in the thick forest,

but man this is so thick.

This is insane.

It's hard to walk through
without falling,

especially with 70 pounds
of gear on your back.

It's a pretty intense.

I'm from Illinois.
I'm not used to dense forest.

I come from the prairie state

so this is... this is
a whole new world to me.

My younger brother Josh and I

have a blacksmith
shop up in northern Illinois.

This is just kind of an example
of some of the knives we make.

This is actually
one of the same models.

I think an advantage
we have is that our brotherhood

is also really strong friendship

and I think that's gonna
help us push forward.

We consider ourselves equipped
to survive in the wilderness,

because primitive skills
are the base of our skill set.

Whenever we have free time we go out,

and we try to camp
as much as possible.

But even if we're just going on a day

hike we try to learn at least
one new thing.

We're doing this to challenge
ourselves mentally,

and physically, and emotionally.

But I think it's gonna
strengthen our relationship,

and we're gonna be stronger
and closer together as brothers.

Being separated for the first

hopefully not more
than a couple weeks

there's definitely a lot of risks.

All of our training coming up

to this point has all been together.

Working on fire together,
working on shelter together,

playing off of each other's skills.

So that's gonna be tough.

Snow is really starting
to come down right now,

pretty heavy flakes.

This is the opportunity
of a lifetime.

The money is huge.
I mean, this is a chance for us

to expand our blacksmith shop
and really work on our business.

Oh, man.

Salal, this plant is called salal.

It covers everywhere, and when
they grow it branch here

and then the other branch
comes around

and twists around the top.

So when I'm walking through

and I try to push
the branches out of my way

more are being pulled
in front of my face.

It's very, very tough
to hike through salal.

This is the most intense hike
I have ever had to do.

An environment like this
especially is very unforgiving.

Getting to my brother
is definitely not gonna be

an easy task.

I hope he's not in a place like this.

This is tough.

Definitely alone.

but I'm excited at the same time.

All right, it's time
to get up into the woods

and get camp set up. There's my hat.

The damn helicopter blew it off.

So I'm gonna head into the
woods, make some noise,

scout out the area a little bit

and come back down and grab my stuff

and get the shelter set up.

Oh, God, this pack is heavy.

I can only imagine what the hikers

are going through right now.

My brother Brad is hiking.

I feel confident that he has
what it takes to find me,

and I think
he's pretty confident in me

being able to set up a solid shelter.

It's a bummer to be honest not
to start this thing together.

I mean, Dave and I, we have this
unspoken division of labor

that usually just takes over.

Each of us will gravitate
to the thing

that just comes naturally to us

without even really talking about it.

alone and starting alone.

It's not gonna be easy,

but I have a really upbeat outlook.

for me to take though.

and he's very good at it;
He's very smart.

He's a pretty well-rounded young man.

My dad is very experienced.
He's been in the military.

He's a super tough, go-get them guy

and just hunting
and going out in the woods

and doing all this stuff.

I'm a little more methodical.

I like to think about things a lot

and think about the situation,

but together I feel like
we're a good combination.

For me this is the ultimate
bonding experience.

This is a chance
to see my son transition

to what I consider a man.

I'm doing this because
I want to test myself,

test my abilities,
and push myself mentally

and physically as far as I can go.

I think we have what
it takes to do this,

because we have the right mind-set;

We have the right attitude.

Attitude is everything.

This is going to be
a pinnacle point in my life

as a father and a man.

I see an opening up this way.

The sun's hitting
in there pretty good.

We got to keep going.

Jumped through the forest.

Here it's just
more salal plants of course

and I see in front of me
some turkey tail mushrooms.

As you can see they look
like turkey tails

and they have a white underbody,

and you can actually count how
old they are by those ridges.

They're a decomposing mushroom,

so they'll grow on decomposing logs

like you see over here.

A little bit more sun
than some other mushrooms,

so it's probably
why it's near the coast,

but I'm gonna grab a few of these

to put in my tea later.

Good find.

My bearing brings me this way,

try to find my way back to Shannon

and I don't know how long
that's gonna be.

I was in the military
for nearly 10 years.

My navigation skills are very good.

That's part of the reasons
why I wanted to be the hiker.

My brother Shannon's
gonna do the shelter,

and the gill net and the
fishing line all by himself.

It's one giant bush.

These branches, they grow...

and it's just wrapping

It's a big-ass bear trail.

like this is very intimidating.

Everything's taller than you,
everything's bigger than you.

Even being able to walk

but it's super hard
