- in the state of alaska, it's a busy place to work.

We have a lot of crime here.

And I think it has to do with,

it's some place out of the way.

It's the last frontier.

(sirens blaring)

- my name is peyton meredith, I'm a patrol sergeant

with fairbanks police department.

(computer beeping)

(whooshing)

(crackling)

- I love being a cop in fairbanks,

'cause I grew up here.

I'm a local kid.

I stuck around, decided to raise my family here.

But this town's pretty dangerous.

A lot people just don't know everything

that goes on in this town at night.

(crackling)

- [peyton] 10-4.

(sirens blaring)

- one of our guys was trying to stop a vehicle.

They ran from him.

- [peyton] okay, we got a pursuit now.

We get a lot of people that like to run from ya.

(siren blaring)

(siren blaring)

(car accelerating)

stop.

(handcuffs jingling)

passenger, exit the vehicle with your hands in the air.

Walk, keep coming.

- [officer] is anybody else in the car?

Yes or no?

- [officer] okay, alright.

(suspenseful music)

- two rifles in the car.

- What is going on tonight?

Why is he not stopping for the police?

- [officer] I was stopping you because you were speeding.

Why did you panic?

What were you so concerned about?

- [officer] they don't kick people out for speeding.

- [man] they haven't.

- He's in the army, and when he saw the behind him

trying to make the stop, he panicked because he thought

what his chain of command would say.

- Huh?

- [officer] cause he thought his chain of--

- no, they don't kick, no. - No, no, no.

- [officer] I know, just telling you what he said.

- It's like, why is he running?

He's just active duty military, not drunk, just,

what the hell was he thinking?

- The worst case you woulda been looking at

woulda been a speeding ticket.

- Okay, we're gonna get you outta the handcuffs, okay?

(handcuffs jingling)

so you're gonna arrest him for failure to stop

for direction of a peace officer in the second degree,

which is just a misdemeanor.

All he had to do was pull over.

I have no idea.

A really bad decision.

(crackling) (dramatic music)

- we just got a call that right on the far side

of the cemetery, there is an eagle down and it is alive.

- There's an eagle? - Yes.

- (groaning) oh man.

I knew it. - You wanna go, carl?

- Sunny petersburg.

I grew up in georgia.

Spent my entire life there.

My wife always had dreams of coming back to petersburg.

Two years ago, luck became our favor

and a law enforcement job opened up

and I'm thankful for the opportunity.

(birds squawking)

petersburg is a small island.

It's a fishing town.

It's built on a norwegian background.

We're a small, close-knit community here

and we have to live together amongst each other.

You might arrest someone one day and see him

in the convenience store the next day.

They didn't really train you in the academy

how to go pick up an eagle that's injured.

(playful music)

to be released back in the wild.

Being a rookie here in petersburg, you get to learn

how to be a small town cop.

You got an arrest warrant.

- I'm a put your handcuffs real quick, man.

You go into the day not knowing if it's gonna be

parking complaints, assaults, thefts, burglaries

or eagle calls.

(wind blowing) (crackling)

so, right now, it's shift change,

so I'm a grab the oncoming officer which is officer wolf.

(rifle loading)

(suspenseful music) (crackling)

what's up, man?

- Not much, you?

So how'd your day go, what happened?

- I played animal control, I played--

- I hate playing animal control.

Guidance counselor.

- I don't mind guidance counselor,

I hate playing animal control.

- [carl] I was a little bit nervous

walking up on a eagle. (chuckling)

- I work nights, he works days on this squad.

If something bad happens, I call my dispatch

and ask them to wake carl up at home.

We're pretty darn close.

You know?

- Alright, bro, I'm out.

I grew up in northwest washington,

about an hour north of seattle.

My father was commercial fisherman

and he fished out of here, so I came up for a fishing job.

And I met my wife here.

I have been with petersburg police department

since September of 2018.

(crackling)

(door rattling)

(siren blaring) (engine revving)

(dispatcher speaking faintly) ...At the police department,

but he's tried kicking the door open.

- [suspect] stop, bro.

- You need to relax. - There's blood everywhere.

- He has a cut this deep. - I need help!

- [erik] we're gonna get you help, but you can't be

out here beating on my windows and stuff, dude.

- [injured man] look at the blood!

I'm gushing.

- [erik] they're calling medical right now.

- turns out this was drinkin', he locked himself

out of his house so he walked up and just decided

to punch out his living room window.

He's actually severed some muscles, you can see the bone.

- He lives nearby, so he thought his best option

was come down to the pd for help.

- Is that what a second guy right there coming in?

You know what, I got my big muscle man coming in

to give me a hand if I need it?

- My shirt's on backwards too.

- [erik] oh, [bleep].

You know what though?

- Yeah, bro, I'm here for you, man.

- You know what, dude?

He was not happy with me.

- You know I had the mind set to throw someone

on the ground.

It was like, oh.

- I'm getting ready to put him in cuffs and he

started to do this kind of stuff, and I'm like,

"dude, if you don't relax real quick here,

you're gonna find yourself on the ground.

(light music)

- we have a contract service, but rather than wait for them,

or call them up.

Definitely part of eing a small town cop.

- I spent almost 21 years being a cop,

but all good things come to an end.

Less than a week I'm gonna be retiring

and a couple days after that,

I'm moving out of state to idaho.

My older kids are wanting to go out of state for college.

That hurts, I wanna be close to 'em.

It's tough to even talk about moving on.

(crackling)

(siren blaring)

- [peyton] 10-4 I'm on his case.

So one of the troopers is chasing somebody.

It's a dark colored mustang.

We work really closely with the state troopers.

So we're gonna try to get up here

ahead of him so we can help.

You know what, we're gonna go this way.

(sirens blaring) (horn honking)

we're just gonna try to cut in front of him.

- We don't know why this guy's running, right?

I mean, he's driving erratically, is he drunk?

He sounds like he's probably drunk.

He was driving the wrong way down the road.

- They lost him downtown.

So I've got...

- Well, we're gonna try to get ahead of him.

So keep an eye out.

Southbound, southbound.

- [dispatcher] southbound (indistinct).

What road?

- Unit 10-4 I've lost sight.

- So the trooper doesn't spike us.

- Oh, he just spiked us (beep)

- [dispatcher] 113, what are you questioning for here?

- [peyton] god dang it, dude.

- [dispatcher] what y'all location?

- [state trooper] he went through our spikes, he left.

- [peyton] city 0-4, I got spiked.

(car jack dragging)

- [peyton] and I split my (beep) pants open when I

got in the car.

You know, I gotta say, 21 years,

that's a first right there buddy.

I was never behind the guy, ever.

- I wasn't either,

never saw the guy. - I never, yeah.

We passed him up there, that's the only reason why

I saw him coming this way.

(radio chatter)

I gotta go back and change my (beep) pants now.

- I think I actually controlled myself

pretty good right there, 'cause I was really

upset there for a minute.

But you know what?

I guess there's, it coulda been worse, right?

Both of us have a military background.

We went to the same academy.

- Well we're both learning certain things and steps.

It really helps to be able to bounce your ideas

off of each other.

- [carl] they saying he may have bit her.

- [erik] I'm gonna go talk with this victim.

- Yeah, he like, "hey, what the hell is going on?"

- [victim] it happened so (beep) fast.

- We're really not sure what's going on right now

so we're gonna brin him back to the station

and figure out what to charge him with.

- All right.

- Yea.

- Yeah, we're gonna take you out of them, man.

I wanna make sure you're okay.

Anything that's gonna cut me, stick me or poke me?

and try to drive home in his truck.

(suspenseful music)

and we're gonna set up and watch him.

I'm in my vehicle watching.

- hey 3247 that truck is moving.

- [officer wolf] sure.

- [dispatch] requesting backup, vehicle's moving.

(car beeping)

- hey (beep) stop!

- [officer wolf] I'm telling him to stop, he didn't stop.

(knocking)

- he's right here.

(suspenseful music)

(indistinct chatter)

- [officer wolf] we can suit up, we can boot the door.

But to have him in the state of mind he's in

is not safe for the community.

It'd be pushing that issue at that point in time.

No one else is in immediate danger get him tomorrow.

Arrest him when he's sober.

(gentle music)

(birds cawing)

- its a beautiful morning.

And just another work day in petersburg.

Petersburg is a small town, there's no where to hide.

(door squeaking)

- [officer tate] go through the doorway,

I'll take them off.

(beep, siren)

- that's not good.

- [officer merideth] well there's a fight

at one of the bars downtown

there's three guys fighting

and somebody says that they're trying to throw somebody

over the side of the bridge.

(siren blaring)

- [officer broady] stop, come here, come here

show me your hands, show me your hands.

(dramatic music)

(siren blaring)

(crackling)

- [officer broady] come to the front of my car.

Face the vehicle, come over here.

- It's nice driving fast without

ice and snow on the ground.

I'll tell you that much.

- [officer broady] your hands dude, give me your hands.

(radio chatter)

- no, what's your name?

- You're gonna have a seat.

- Yeah what's your name?

- Have a seat.

- [officer broady] get in.

- [officer] he hasn't been making any sense.

So I came up here, saw him running down the sidewalk here

slammed on my brakes 'cause he jumped out in front of me.

(muffled speaking)

- [suspect] we're cool, I don't want to press any charges

I ain't hurting nobody.

- [officer] that's fine, I just wanna know what happened.

- [suspect] which part?

- [officer] the story, why is your nose bloody?

Why are you being so hostile with us?

- [officer] I get that, I get that.

- [officer] as far as I can tell, the fights over

he was just walking away from it.

Your nose looks like it might be broken.

- [officer] we'll just get him checked out at the hospital

he's not charged with anything.

- the community's experiencing a meth and heroin problem.

It's similar to the problems that

we're seeing all over the nation.

(crackling)

Lost a whole bunch of friends to drug addiction.

My dad's been a heroin addict my whole life.

My mom was involved in drugs.

If I could snap my fingers, like that

and just purge the meth and heroin

and the demons these people have in this town

it would be awesome.

(suspenseful music)

- I need some backup for this call.

We're rolling up to carl's house right now.

What's going on boss?

- What's up man?

- [officer wolf] keep going, lets go do it.

[officer tate] we're going to a gun call.

(suspenseful music)

(footsteps)

- [officer tate] all right, I'm gonna go talk to (beep)

- [officer wolf] I'm gonna hang out right here.

- [officer tate] what's going on?

- [officer wolf] he pulled the gun out, he said

he pointed it at you like dead straight at you?

All right.

(knocking)

- [officer wolf] petersburg police department!

(suspenseful music)

- [officer tate] you're being detained.

Hands behind your back.

Where's your gun at?

- [suspect] what?

- [officer tate] where's your shotgun at?

- Do you have a gun here, yes or no?

- [officer tate] okay, we're done here.

- [officer tate) I'm gonna hang right here.

(engine revving)

- I'm going to file a search warrant.

Hopefully get it signed off on by a judge right away.

Wolf being there by himself isn't ideal.

- Make sure to do like constant status checks with wolf.

(crackling)

we're looking for meth

and we're looking for an light 12 gauge.

- [suspect] yeah, that's good man.

- [officer tate] hey here's a copy for ya'll.

(dispatcher) 191074 execute search warrant.

- [suspect] so what, am I going to jail?

I'm not a firefighter by any means

I have small amounts of training.

And I basically try to fit in where I can help.

This is the first time one of these has gone out for me.

I love working with the new guys

they are fun to supervise.

Having all these new guys come to the department

reinvigorates me and reinvigorates the department.

- I learn a lot from them too.

- I have no idea.

- When he opens the door

obviously big strong smell of marijuana

coming from the thing okay?

So when was the last time you smoked up?

- Before the game.

- 'cause when you open the door

holy hell I need a bag of doritos right here, okay?

- Yeah no, I'm not.

- So, how much have you had to drink at the game?

- I've had two or three beers.

- Okay.

This other officer right over here

is one of the traffic enforcement guys

he's gonna speak to you

a little bit more about that alcohol.

- [officer meredith] I feel like those of us

that are retiring or leaving the department

in the hands of the crop of young guys and gals

that come up through the ranks

they're the future for the next 20 years.

- Well, tonight you're gonna be placed under arrest

for a dui, you wanna place your hands behind your back.

- And, I'll miss being a part of that.

- Okay.

(upbeat music)

turning in uniforms, turning in gear.

These handcuffs were the first pair of handcuffs

that I ever got.

And one day maybe I'll give them to my kids.

Been a lot of smiles, a lot of laughter

a lot of good times, a lot of heartache, a lot of tears.

It's been a hell of an adventure

and I wouldn't change anything.
