There's not that many murders where you
essentially watch someone die on body

-worn video.

You never get the smoking gun.

It's the theories of little wins.

They thought they wouldn't get caught.

They thought they were invincible.

That mobile phone can incriminate him.

Showing off his knife, he was 13.

There's vast amounts of data coming in.

Everyone's waiting for the analysts to
come up with the goods.

You can't afford to waste a minute.

It was just chaos.

And even if you've not been told the
truth, a digital footprint can't be

disputed.

I got that phone call late, knowing that
the next morning this was going to be

announced as a murder.

Someone had chased down a child.

Stabbed him nearly 20 times.

But there wasn't much more he could say
other than his name, Lariko Steed.

And that there were four people that had
attacked him.

Lariko, how many people attacked you?

Four?

We call it a dying declaration.

I think the last time he was able to
speak was on that video.

So you're essentially watching life head
away.

There's a knock at the door.

It's the police.

The first thing they asked me is, where
is my son?

That's when they said, he's been
stabbed.

Everything ran out of me. I almost felt
like I couldn't breathe.

Nothing inside of me believed what he
was saying.

Very good. He was my only boy.

Back in Bermuda, people would tell him,
you look just like your mama, baby.

Our bond was different.

That was my baby.

On the first day I took over, we
basically know there's been a chase.

There's four suspects involved,
confirmed by Larico himself.

We didn't know why Larico had been
killed and we still didn't really know

where it had happened.

We know where it ended, but where did it
start?

We've been stabbed a few times around
this place.

About 18 times.

It's a frenzied attack.

The sort of digital experts I want
around me at the start of a murder are

telephone experts and intelligence
experts.

My first job will be to go to the
victim's call data, to go to a specific

time, specific date, the time that the
incident occurred, and work backwards

from that.

Normally, you'd have a victim's device
on them. That was missing.

We didn't have that.

I go to my specialist digital experts,
specialist researchers.

I say, just tell me about any piece of
intelligence about Lariko.

Who are his friends? Who is his
associate?

What do we know about the tensions in
the area at the time?

I went on to all of our police systems,
which saw all of the intelligence that

was received.

Massive database.

Hundreds of thousands of pieces of
information on any known criminals, gang

-related activity.

Usually, we have an inkling, we have an
intelligence picture.

We didn't have any of that for Enrique.

I started to question, why him?

I didn't know anything about him.

It was just really strange that we'd got
this young 17-year-old lad and we still

didn't even have a motive.

It was really unusual.

We widened our intelligence strategy, we
widened our digital strategy, hopeful

that we'd just get that strand which
would point us in the right direction.

The pressure can be phenomenal at times.

You want to do your best.

You know, you want to catch the
offenders. You don't want them running

around the city.

It's up and down.

You've had very little sleep.

You know it's on your shoulders to try
and keep people safe.

The first real breakthrough was...

At a briefing, through intelligence, we
were given a name of someone known to

Lariko.

Let's call her Girl One because she's a
child.

A slightly unusual name, lots of
different spellings.

We find four people with this particular
name on social media.

There was one in particular who stood
out for us that...

We think this is the right one.

She's 15.

There are a couple of missing persons,
enquiries, but nothing else that's

recorded with us.

Why is a girl of this age involved in
something so drastic as this?

We bring her in as a witness to talk to
her.

Now, we're going to speak about an
incident that happened last week, which

you're aware of, but the most important
thing is that you tell the truth about

what's happened. That is really, really
important.

I know you're 15 years old, and I'm sure
you understand the difference between

right and wrong.

When we spoke to this girl, she actually
said, yes, I was with Lyrica on that

night.

For the first time, we've got someone
who was with him.

just prior to the murder.

She tells us that

she doesn't know Lyrico that well.
They've agreed to meet up for a date

and go for a walk to a park.

What were you two doing other than
talking?

She

said

these figures then rob her, take her
iPad.

She's terrified. They run off with her
iPad.

She doesn't know what to do.

And after that, then, I went to look for
Rico, and I couldn't find her, so I went

to see her again, because I'm worried
she's dead.

Girl one is very significant, because
she's the last person I know that's seen

Rico alive.

She's the only person I know that's seen
the offenders.

Now that we know La Rico's been in the
park and we've got a whole new area now

that we need to focus on, a whole new
area of potential witnesses, CCTV, dash

cam, phone cell sites.

I remember the officer in charge coming
through and saying, what do you think to

this?

I see La Rico with a girl chatting.

And then all of a sudden, four figures
starburst and chase him, and very

quickly he's on his toes and you see him
sprinting.

There was one male running off, and then
it looked like there was another group.

There was two at the front chasing after
him and two slightly further back.

This is gold dust to us, because one, we
know Lariko hasn't started the fight.

who we've got a direction of travel.

Three, we know that it's not a matter of
the killer just finding Lyrica on the

street.

So this is the first point where we
start to think, well, how did they know?

How did they know he'd be there?

Carrying on, looking at that footage, we
track girls leaving the park, walking

casually down.

Hempstead Lane, and then we see her get
onto the bus, like she's going about her

everyday business.

We have really clear CCTV of her sat at
the back of a bus, and then

you hear the sirens and you see the blue
lights of the police going to help

Lariko, and at that point she ducks down
behind the seat and hides.

And that's really telling.

Hang on a minute, this date has just run
off, being pursued, and you don't want

the police to know you're there. Why
not?

And then we'd see her on an iPad that
she's told us was stolen during the

incident where Loriko was chased.

So that's a real game-changer, because
she's lying.

So after Lurico passed, it was just a
blur.

The police are asking me loads of
questions, and I had no answers for

them.

I was so close-eyed to everything here
in Nottingham

until my son passed.

He always reassured me that when he was
out, that he was safe.

I didn't know about the street life in
the UK.

I was just thinking about my son.

Thinking about how he felt when he ran.
What did it feel like for him when the

knife ran into him?

And when he ran, what sorts of thoughts
were in his mind?

I wondered if he prayed.

I feel he did.

We did the post-mortem on Lariko and
there were about

18 wounds.

He'd got six knife wounds to his face.

So at that point, you know, he's on his
back then, trying to defend himself.

You don't stab somebody that many times
and think, hey, he'll be all right.

If you literally just count to 18 at
whatever speed, one.

Two, three, four, five.

Observing that a lot. You're not trying
to scare someone. You are trying to kill

them.

We decide at this point it's personal.

Could it be retribution?

Could it be gang-related?

I'm about ten days in.

to the murder investigation now, and the
pressure's starting to rise.

I have girl one in custody, but still no
other suspect.

It's suspected that you've got more
knowledge of the offence, and you've not

been forthcoming with the truth.

And it's suspected...

You may have a more significant role in
the murder.

If Lurico was being looked for by gangs
or people he's fallen out with, how

do they know that he's in a dark park in
the middle of a ball on a Tuesday night?

Do you have any reason that you don't
want to tell him?

I'm afraid of my safety.

You're afraid of your safety?

Girl one doesn't really know what's
happened.

She was scared.

People were masked and it's all just a
bit confusing.

And we know girl one has been lying to
us about the iPad and hiding from the

police.

So we do go to the Crown Prosecution
Service at that stage and

ask. if they will charge her, but
there's just not enough evidence to meet

the threshold.

We have to let her go.

In investigations as complicated as
homicides are, you do get a lot of red

herrings.

You think you're going down the right
route, but ultimately it leads you to

nothing.

I need to know how those four suspects
have got to the scene.

Have they gone on a bus or looked at the
buses? How did they get there?

We go to all the taxi firms in
Nottingham to establish if

they've picked up four youths and
dropped them off in the Bulwell area.

Criminals often use local.

rather than Uber, because there's more
of a digital footprint with Uber because

it's connected to your card.

Central

cars

come back to us and say they've had two
drivers...

who've provided taxes for four youth in
the Bulwell area within our time

parameters.

We found out that they were collected
and taken back to an area called

Cementon, which is a long way away from
Bulwell.

So at this point, I'm getting quite
excited.

I'm hoping to get four phones moving
together in a cab.

I'm obviously hoping to get forensic
evidence.

Is there any blood?

This is a real opportunity.

We see two taxis and we search the taxis

and subject them to full forensic
examinations.

By the time we've got those taxis,
they've been vomited in by night.

And the taxi driver's obviously cleaned
those cabs numerous times.

What we're really hoping for is Lariko's
blood in the taxi and it's just not

there.

At the last minute, when we think this
taxi hasn't yielded anything,

the taxi driver says to us, oh, but I've
got this. And he, with

his bare hands, pulls out a phone.

And says, one of them left this, if this
is any good for you.

These lads have got out the car and run
off without paying and they've left

their phone in the car.

I've now got a mobile phone that can be
interrogated.

Brilliant.

Following the inquiries with the taxi
drivers, I'm handed a blue Nokia phone

from the back seat of the taxi, having
left the scene of a murder.

It's unbelievable.

It really is unbelievable.

One of the basic things to get wrong,
you've got wrong.

A lot of criminals use cheap Nokias.

They're of very little value.

They'll use it for a month and then pass
it on to someone else deliberately to

try and thwart the police.

I want to know who's had that phone on
the night.

The SIM card in it is unregistered. It's
prepaid.

There's no user details recorded.

For me, it's a bit of a dead end.

I fast-track the Nokia phone.

I get straight on the phone to my lead
forensic scientist.

Let's see whose fingerprints are on the
battery, because that'll be the person

who took the battery out to put their
own SIM card in.

There's good news.

There's fresh DNA on where the phone
would be held to your ear.

and the mouse, suggesting it's the last
person to use it.

There's also fingerprints on the battery
at the back. So that's the best news

possible. I'm now going to know who's
had that phone on the night.

And it's just a matter of putting it
through our database.

But the fingerprints and the DNA aren't
on there.

And that's quite a shock because now
we're talking,

Someone was involved in a murder who's
never had their fingerprints and DNA

taken by the police.

We do a fresh media appeal asking if
anyone has got any information.

We start to receive intelligence.

A group were involved and they were from
the centre area of Nottingham.

Somebody called us.

or YK, if identified in the inquiry.

Kashan Campbell, he's a 19-year-old
youth.

He has been in trouble with the police
before.

He's a knife carrier.

He's not the most prolific offender, but
he's had quite a challenging

upbringing. His own dad was murdered
when he was a child.

My questions are, what devices have they
got?

Who are they communicating with? What
phone numbers are they using?

With those numbers, I can apply for the
call data.

It gives me the fastest amount of
information that I can work on.

Who have they been in contact with?

Where have they been? The locations?

That day, the week before, three months
before?

I want to know.

More about him. I want to link him to
Lariko.

I'm going for the call data for Kashan
Campbell.

Quite specific.

I wanted to know where this phone was,
where he was, at this specific time, on

this specific date.

Bingo. Happy days.

He's in ballroom.

Right where I want him to be.

We've now got him in an area where
there's been a murder committed.

There's three other offenders.

I want to know who else is with Kashan.

Every time your phone...

connects to a mast while you're
travelling, it leaves a digital

footprint.

Your phone tries to shake hands with any
public Wi-Fi, with any cell mast.

We then know Kashan's phone number, so
we can say which phone mast

it pings off on what time.

We see that that pings off the same
month, travelling in the same direction

at the same time, co-locating with the
taxi driver.

Between 7.06 and 7.18, we've got three
handsets co-locating

with the taxi driver's mobile phone,
going to the vicinity where the murder

had taken place in Ball.

Who else was in the taxi?

Prashant's phone, the blue Nokia phone,
which we'd expect.

And then there's a number linked to
someone called Christian Jameson.

So another potential suspect comes into
the investigation.

Again, I'm asked, who is he?

Tell me everything you know about
Christian Jameson.

I find that he's involved in a
knife-related incident. I could see

that... Kirsten Jameson had nicknames
recorded on the system.

It was recorded with zeros.

And some of the supports were telling us
he hung around with Kashan Campbell.

This feels like a really good
breakthrough.

But once I show my hand, I lose the
opportunity to do any covert work.

Other people involved might run away,
might flee abroad.

Or start disposing of things.

It's really important to stay on the
cutting edge of digital forensics

because actually the criminals do.

They're always adapting.

They're always transforming the way they
do things.

And we live in a digital world.

When you're going through someone's call
data, it can be thousands and thousands

of pages long.

You need to have an inquiry in mind.

We find out that the date of the murder,
because Sean's phone is used up until

the minute before the murder, then it's
switched off and then it's switched on

again after the murder.

Criminals think they're clever when they
turn the phone off because they say,

I'll turn my phone off, then the police
can't place me at the scene.

If I look at a suspect's phone history
and I see that for the previous two

years that phone has never been switched
off and, goodness me, on the night

there's a murder, nearby an area he is,
he switches his phone off, well, that

tells me as much as it would have done
if he'd have kept it with him.

Girl one was let go because there's just
not enough evidence to charge her.

But we still have her mobile phone
download.

When you're going through someone's
download, it's a massively intrusive

procedure.

They can't contain fingerprint.

It can contain facial recognition. It's
got photographs in. It's got your core

data history. It's got your contacts.

If it's a smartphone, it's got your
applications that you use. You may use

social media applications that's on the
phone. It retrieves all this

information.

My phone expert was reviewing all Girl
1's devices and said,

you're not going to believe this.

Girl one, she's been in communication
with Kashan.

So that was a jaw-drop moment, because
this is the first time I've got anyone

who links my two groups together.

So this was a really... Say that again.

And then he said, you need to look at
this.

Moments after Lariko's death, Guild 1
tried to contact Lariko.

Are you okay?

Who was chasing you?

She's panicking.

They're unaware of how seriously fatally
Lariko's been injured.

She's checking.

Are you conscious?

Have you named who was chasing you?

Loriko was 14 when he came to the UK to
live with his dad and his sister.

I moved everyone here for a better life.

I wanted them to be able to experience
university, college, you know, all of

those things.

When I arrived here three years later,
Loriko had gone from my little boy to

this big man that was doing his own
thing.

He didn't really need mum and dad for
much.

I feel like he thought he had to be
somebody he wasn't, being out here.

Yeah, I had only been here a few months
and then he was stabbed.

Lariko's told me there's four offenders.

I now know Kashawn and...

Christian's phones are in Bulwell at the
time of the murder.

I'm still looking for two more
offenders.

A mobile phone is a movable item.

I could lend you my mobile phone.

You could lend me yours.

I could have put it in someone's coat
pocket and they could have walked off

with it in their pocket, unknowingly had
it on them.

So it's important.

that we put the device in a person's
hand.

We go back to CCTV because we now know
the point at which the offenders were

dropped off, picked up and taken home in
the taxi.

We were aware that the taxi was going to
pick up from Shrewsbury Road.

We'd start at that location and then
just work our way out to try and track

the movement.

Around the area where the taxi's called,
we see a group of youth coming from a

house of someone called Rommel
Miller-Campbell.

Rommel Miller-Campbell is on a programme
for youth who could go off

the tracks and he's on a football
scholarship.

He was recorded with the nickname of Rem
and had been linked to knife crime.

Christian Jameson and Remmel
Miller-Campbell go into the pack

supermarket in Smenton.

Then Christian Jameson makes a phone
call at 6.42.

Analysed the Cordage record.

Bingo. Happy days.

The timestamp on the CCTV identically
matched the usage.

of Christian Jamin's mobile phone.

This is the same number, five out,
travelling from Smenton, going to

Bulwark.

So to see that footage, the number that
we'd said was his, pinging off the local

mast, and all of a sudden now I can put
a phone in someone's hand that then

travels to the scene.

That's a real breakthrough.

I've now identified three males who I
think are in the taxi.

Kashan, Christian and Ramel.

I've got evidence on camera of Christian
Jameson on his phone just prior to the

murder.

I've also got girl one lying to me and I
think she's involved.

So it's all coming together.

At this point, within the investigation,
we're all feeling a little bit happy

now.

I'm going to arrest them.

I have three males in custody.

Kashan, Christian and Ramal.

I'm still looking for my fourth
offender.

So what mobile phone then were you using
on the 30th?

No comment.

Where is that phone now?

No comment.

You've been there?

No comment.

Ramel Andre Campbell-Miller.

Your phone is pinging off a mast in the
Snesdon area and in

the Bulwell area.

And we're saying, that's you.

You're one of the people inside.

Lyrical.

They callously left him sleeping out.

I'm coming.

As I expect, none of them talked to us.

And I also have girl one in custody.

Were you put under pressure by anyone to
meet Larika?

No comment.

How would they know that he's in that
park if you didn't tell them?

Girl one is very significant.

It couldn't have happened without her.

That's the honey trap bit.

Some information suggests that you're
involved in a conspiracy.

You've been named as someone that has
arranged for Lurico to go to that park,

lured Lurico in so he could be attacked.

Why is that? Why are people saying that?

No comment.

Whenever anyone comes into custody,
they're always searched, and because

Christian had previous knives and drugs,
he was given a very thorough search.

And we found he'd inserted a phone in an
orifice which wasn't made

for phones to be inserted in.

But obviously he'd put it up his back
passage because he thought we wouldn't

look there, and we did.

Do you normally have a couple of phones
on you?

So what can you tell me about the phone?

Is there going to be anything that links
you to that phone?

This device, along with other devices,
are interrogated and examined, and it

reveals some interesting search history.

There's five searches on Google
searching the condition of a 17-year-old

boy that had been stabbed recently in
Bulwark.

But interestingly, all these searches
were deleted.

I think at this point, for Christian
Jameson, the whole world's falling apart

and it's all about damaging imitation
now. Do I need to get rid of my phone?

I'll just check on the internet to see
whether or not, you know, they can find

me by my phone.

You've now got...

A group in a taxi travelling to the
scene in contact with each other,

wondering if movements can be traced,
and then later googling the murder.

It's getting harder and harder for them
to explain.

Following more phone work, we got a
really good breakthrough.

The most valuable piece of information
and evidence that we got from Christian

Jamieson's phone was the blue Nokia
handset.

was stored as a contact as a person by
the name of JD.

That's the first time where we linked
that number to any sort of name or

nickname.

I asked my phone expert to go back to
the place where the blue Nokia cell

site's from and see where it locates
prior to the murder.

So... The blue knocker that the
offenders have left in the back seat of

the taxi is self-sighting to an address
in Smenton before the murder.

And the person that we now know to have
the initials JD,

their home was within the self-sight
triangulation.

JD was 16, so a child.

JD's arrested.

We bring him into custody.

I know time isn't on our side because
we've got the 24 hours.

And the first thing is, when he goes
into custody, he's taking his DNA and

his fingerprints.

They have officers with their engines
running.

The fingerprints go to one lab.

The DNA goes to another.

We've got scientists being paid overtime
to turn that round on the 24 hours he's

in custody.

So the clock's ticking.

I was in the incident room and all my
team were there.

I think I just opened the email and
said, Oh God, it's him. It's him. We've

got him.

You're... Forensic evidence on the
phone.

You've got fingerprints and DNA on that
phone.

You got anything to say about that?

The odds of that DNA belonging to anyone
else other than JD

were a billion to one.

It felt really, really good to charge.

the fourth person it was all the digital
evidence brilliant detective work by the

team we'd gone from a whodunit to having
all the offenders

in custody

i

can remember

driving home that day and sort of being
quite elated.

But then the next day you're back in and
you're like, right, let's start building

this file.

I know we've got the right people, but I
need to convince the person who walks in

off the street and sits on the jury.

We're still missing one major thing.

We're missing a motive for why this
terrible incident occurred.

And this is really important because
it's one thing to say to a jury, these

are the right people, but they say, but
why?

Why would they do it?

We still haven't got Larico's phone at
this stage and we

all believe that some of the answers
could be on there.

We do a fresh media appeal.

Lo and behold, one of his friends
contacted the police and handed over the

damaged mobile phone, claiming it was
Larico's.

This phone was in such a state that it
had to be rebuilt and then interrogated.

It contained some very interesting
social media videos.

One in particular.

shown the backs of two people running
away down a street, and with a

comment on it by La Rico, under the
caption, Runners, Rems and C-Rows.

La Rico's group were shouting after
them, athletes, athletes, gang athletes,

and mocking them as they ran away.

Come on, hold that gang shit, man. Come
on, we're out here, B, out here, out

here, out here.

And then at the same time, we received
intelligence that we should be looking

on YouTube for some videos.

We found two videos that have been
uploaded onto YouTube, one by Lurico and

his friend, and one by the suspect.

On the first video, we saw Lyrico
standing at the back of the group.

He's a minor player.

He's not one of the singers.

On the track, again, they talk about
rems

and zeros and cash.

and they refer to them again as the
athlete gang.

They're actually dancing like this,
running, innit?

Basically they're calling them cowards.

Kashan and Christian's gang ran away and
they're mocking them.

That is massive, massive disrespect.

And then the final piece to the jigsaw
was a video.

On YouTube.

Made by the Way Too Gang. The lead
singer, and it was Kashan, we know that

for sure.

They use the word, anyone

calling us athlete gang is going to get
Rambo'd.

And they talk about stabbing someone in
the chest. Stabbing someone in the back

and putting him in a hole.

But they're not stupid enough to name
Lariko.

When I look at this and listen to what
they're saying, they're describing

Lariko's death, it just feels like
they're bragging.

We're talking about very young adults
here.

For someone to die over that, it's
crazy.

It's crazy.

These weren't organised gangsters.

They were kids who wanted to sing and
pretend to be gangsters.

Obviously, they just lost the concept of
reality.

But they were all in it, not a single
one of them said, this is the wrong

thing to do.

When I think about Lariko's mum, I've
got nothing but.

admiration that to this day, five years
on, she is still out there telling

people what it's like to be the mother
of a murdered child.

As the days go past and the years go
past, the pain doesn't go.

I decided to move.

After we go past.

I wanted the girls to start fresh and
just feel free and safe.

It really helps me to talk about them.

I don't want my son's name to just fly
in the wind.

Some people get nervous to speak to me
about their children, especially

their sons, but I've reassured them,
please share your stories. Please tell

me how good your son done in school
today. Please tell me how much closer

you've gotten to him.

Just hug your son a little bit more for
me.
