I'm on my way down now.Cu@}𠿡 {\an8}We had not had a vacation
since having a baby.Рڡԁ {\an8}I think I went to John and I said
this would be a really good time for us?Cu炚ӡ́ {\an8}to do this amazing trip
that we've talked about doing for so long,
Cu炮 {\an8}which was a huge deal for us.
(Cu١Ӂ {\an8}The night of Friday 13th, I'd been
on board for four months as a dancer.Cu {\an8}I had no idea something was gonna happen.@Cu ϡɁ {\an8}One moment, you are celebrating
and chilling with your family.Cu2 {\an8}The next moment, you're just there,8p {\an8}powerless.pCun It felt like
the ground under our feet opened.PCu@ ̡Ɓ People were grabbing onto the walls
and grabbing onto each other.
ɡÁ This is straight out of a scene
of Titanic, completely.Cuѡˁ Stories of fear and panic
from the cruise ship Costa Concordia. Let's be honest,Cu@Xԡ you have thought about it every time
you get on a plane or a cruise ship.

What happens if something goes wrong?oCu蠜 Well, it happened.̡Ɓ
Every time you close your eyes,
you see something from the night.Cu 0 Just literally back in
the most terrifying moment you've ever experienced with your family.Cu! God, what have I done?Cu@Sx {\an8}We'd been to Europe before,
but never together.
(š0 {\an8}So it'd definitely be
our longest vacation together, Cui {\an8}our furthest vacation together./0 Our daughter, Lila, was 14 months old.Cu@ݡׁ so we felt like it was a good opportunity
for us to do a really big trip together.ϡɁ I'm pretty sure we packed
a suitcase of toys, diapers, diaper wipes,Cu@ you know, the whole thing.
We had so much stuff. 8¡ We were going to Paris,
Switzerland, Venice, Barcelona.OCu@蠴 Ultimately, we would end on a cruise ship. ؠˡŁ
Yeah, I think that was a big part
of why we chose this vacation.
GCuP We took endless photos and videos,
made a ton of incredible memories.Cuࠩ I always wanted to go to Italy. That was, like,
the highest on my bucket list,
xCu@Pǡ {\an8}but I didn't really know
I was going on a cruise ship.ؠϡɁ {\an8}I hadn't told her that part yet.
Just told her the Italy part,Cu5hš {\an8}but the cruise ship was gonna be
a special surprise.
(Cu@J We had been dating for about three years
at that time.WˡŁX The idea was, at some point,
I was going to ask her to marry me.Cu@k𠪡 If you ask someone to marry you,Ϡ you'd want the most romantic place
you could find,
Ǡ̡Ɓ and on this journey, there was
quite a few places to choose from.Cu¡ This would just be
that moment where everything clicks.Cu@ȡ She can't say no, right?
If you ask 'em in the perfect place?WX Everybody thinks that,
if you're gonna do it, right? Cup When I arrived,¡ I was amazed with how big
and enormous the ship looked.Cu At the time, I was 17.GH {\an8}My mother wanted to celebrate
her 50th birthday.@Cu
 She booked for me,
my boyfriend at the time, and her childhood best friend, Luisa.Cu@- Since I was very little,
we did everything together.(ʡāH I was about seven years old
when she was diagnosed with cancer.`CuX But a few months before our departure, her cancer was in remission. Cun̡Ɓ This was definitely another big reason
to celebrate her birthday.Cu` The first thing we did
was explore the… the ship. Cu@hʡā I knew that it was going to be
the largest ship I've ever seen.ؠš0 I still remember stepping into the ship
for the first timeCuhȡ and just being overwhelmed
by how extravagant everything was.Cu@p Very opulent. Chandeliers everywhere.`Сʁh It seemed like everything was either made
of gold or glass or marble.
Cup Very sort of old Italy./0 You know,
just everything shining and perfect.Cu@̡Ɓ I didn't know exactly what room
I was gonna get when I booked it.h( At that time,
the trip was quite expensive,Cu+ and I was a… a student.ġ
( But he made sure
he got the best room that we could have.(Cu@Vh֡Ё I was so happy because we got the balcony,
and we have this beautiful view.wx We walked on the balcony, Cuoh and Nick pointed out,ơ "Hey look, about a floor or two below us
is the lifeboats."oCuX The lifeboats. And I thought,
"Well, I'll take a picture of that." Cu@蠫 I've never been on a cruise ship, Ρȁ
and I thought, "Well, say if something
like the Titanic happens…"Cu@ And I said,
"It's not gonna be like the Titanic." ءҁ "I've been on cruises before. It's gonna
be fantastic. You're gonna love it."Cu Kids, don't you dare run away from here!Cu#h When we first got
on board, it was pretty amazing.GH We met with someone that asked us?Cu@;𠹡 what we wanted to do
for the rest of the week. We set up a spa day,
and it just was so exciting, right?WCu@Pࠩ This was all happening so fast.ġ We had just gotten to our room.
Now we're walkin' around.p As we're walkin',
I'm taking pictures of everything.CuyX One of the amazing things about cruising is that it's going to provide you
with everything.OCu@0 And so for me, especially as a new mom,
'
( that made it really easy.Ϡ There were endless restaurants
of every type, Cu8 you know, theaters, shows, casino. The only difficulty, really,
is how to spend your time Cu@ in terms of how many choices there are.Ϡ͡ǁ I remember an ice cream bar
where you could make your own sundaes,Cuܸ and I feel like it was 24 hours a day, you could just eat ice cream
if you wanted.HCu@ġ This was back
when The Walking Dead was kinda big,
Ǡ
and so we'd always play a game.X You know, "If zombies attacked,
where would you go,Cu@ؠš and what weapon would you use
to either fight or get out?"
o͡ǁ
p Like, "Where would you go?
Would you go out that way or that way?"
wCu@)Сʁ And if it's a slow zombie,
where's the weapon you can use to stop it? When he would do this to me,Cu@@ءҁ the first time, I told him, "I don't know.
I wasn't really paying attention." - And he's like, "Wrong!"
- Exactly.Cu@Wؠ - Exactly.
- "Wrong!"'( "That's where you messed up."ǡ@ Slowly I started to really pay attention
to my surroundings.Cuh It was a beautiful evening.͡ǁ {\an8}The weather was clear,
a little cold because it was January.Cuh {\an8}However, it was a quiet evening
like any other.0Cu I worked with Costa for about 43 years.
You always work on a ship.CuP Christmas, New Year's,
Easter, Saturday and Sunday. I felt more at home on board than at home.
Cu옠 About 800 people worked for me
on the Costa Concordia.Cu So by the night of Friday 13th January, I'd been working on board for four months
as a dancer.Cu ( At that point,
it was absolutely my dream job.
w
x It was literally heaven on earth.Cu5̡Ɓ Getting to explore the world.
I was in the best shape of my life. I had great friends.CuL` It was magic.8Cu@cʡā {\an8}On behalf of the management
of Costa and the entire crew,
Ǡ¡
 {\an8}I am pleased and honored
to welcome you on board.
Cu| {\an8}I met Captain Schettino a few times. The first time I met him
was in the crew elevator.Cu@ The only thing I kind of knew about him was that he was
a newer captain to this ship.?H Enjoy your cruise.(Cu@ One time, my mum came to visit on board, and he was talking with my mum,8 and he was sayingwCu@Р͡ǁ that he was gonna go fishing
on the island with one of his friendsϠ but not to tell anyone because he wasn't actually allowed
to do that.
'CuȠ And so there was also this, like, "Oh, he's working the system"
kind of thing.Cu ࠹ That night,
around nine, the captain calls me.Cu "pġ A few days earlier,
the head waiter had asked the captainCu@ 8(͡ǁ {\an8}if the ship could do a sail-by salute
close to Giglio Island

lived on the island.`Cu d8סс {\an8}He asked me if I would like to join him
on the bridge for the sail-by.Cu } To me, it sounded a bit unusual, because, ؠ as it was night, all dark,
there wasn't much to see.
Cu But, as this was the captain's decision, 7 8 we complied. Cu ؠ That night, me and my boyfriend, Andrea, decided to go up on the deck of the pool.Cu
H As I opened the door, I felt this fresh breeze.Cu
#𠞡 Everything was dark, but it was light up by the few lights.
pCu
?p Sparkles just reflect on the water.8Cu
S I lean out. I was watching the sea,
o
p and Andrea, who was behind me,
he hugged me. Cu
v He said, "It feels like the Titanic."@ At that moment, I…Cu
 Actually, I…ؠ I felt a little strange.P But it's crazy, right?Cu
á So you… you just…
leave that… that thought behind. Cu
h And then I received this call
from my mother.( She said, "We are here in the restaurant."Cu
0̡Ɓ "They are beginning to serve dinner,
so please come on, join us."Cu
Р It was kind of an important dinnerGH because, at midnight,@ it would be her birthday.Cu@ That night, we had a really nice dinner.GH Can you say hi to Daddy?ʡā8 But following dinner,
with Lila being one, it was time for bed.Cu> We went back to the cabin
and put her down.࠷P We just did
our traditional bedtime routine. CuW Getting on my pajamas.ϡɁ I come out of the shower,
have my boxer shorts on, getting into bed.Cun@ And I remember laying downWX and actually verbalizing,
"I am exhausted."0CuР Um, that was such a long day.Cu@а As we are getting closer to the island, I see that we're getting too close,oʡā0 so I mention this to the head waiter
who's standing next to me.OCu0 I said, "I think
we're getting a little too close."
p Suddenly,
the shore became clearly visible.Cuh On this particular night,ߠ with my friends,
we had the half-hour break.@Cu@, I was dating one of the barmen from Peru, who was working in the Londra Bar
at the back of Deck 5,wCu@K at the back of the ship,
and I wanted to see him,GH so I said to everybody else,̡ƁP I was like, "Do you wanna go get
a cappuccino in the Londra Bar?"7Cui0 And so everyone was like,
"Oh yeah, let's go do that."
Cu@Ƞ As the ship got closer to the island,͡ǁ what surprised me quite a bit
was that the ship never slowed down.0Cu䠠 In that moment, I started to panic. Cu@
0 The head waiter tells me, "No, look." "The captain knows very well
what he is doing."
Ǡ And then he didn't finish the sentence.Cu@
࠳ I heard and felt a sound and a vibration.ӡ́ For me, the room starting to slowly shift
just was incredibly unnerving.0Cu
Сʁ You know, my body tensed up,
and I knew something was terribly wrong.Cu
Š We heard a loud screeching sound. ɡÁ And then the noise changes
from a screech to a scraping noise,Cu
( and that's a terrifying noise to hear.Cu@ ¡ Can you imagine
a thousand plates breaking in one time?
x I was so scared
because the sound was really high.Cu2ؠˡŁ And all this boiling water
from the braiser starts falling down.Cu@N I was one of 180 chefs.
( No one knows what's happening.Ǡ I thought it's rough sea,
and it's gonna be all right.
GCun And after a few seconds…0@ no, it's something not right.
xCu I turned and sawš that the ship had crashed into the rocks
on the left side.PCuơ You could literally see
the water entering the ship's hull.Cu0p We were all shocked and unable to move.CuIp Calm down. - It's better if you sit down.
- Sit down? _ - Sit down?
- Yes. Cul Everyone was freaking out. And I was looking at my mum
that was right in front of me._Cuؠ She looked at me and said, "It's okay." "Everything okay."Cu( She was trying to do everythingGH to make me feel like
nothing bad was happening,'Cu but I knew it was.
xCu We're just standing there,
looking at what to do next.Cu쐠 I quickly stopped having any emotion,wx and I looked at Nicholas, and he said, Cuؠ̡Ɓ "We need to get out of here,
and we need to get out of here now."
HCuh He said, "Did you hear that?
Did you feel that?"
I definitely felt panic, Cu@4 ơ and so my body sort of goes
into this crisis-response mode.(ơ You know, I've been accused of being
an unemotional person,
Cu@TȠ but at that moment,
it was just pure survival

and just trying to lead my family out
of this thing.
PCurȠ I yelled to Meghan.
I said, "Grab the baby."GH Like, "We've gotta go."Cu@Р Seeing him react the way that he did,op I immediately felt dread. _ȡ I grabbed Lila out of the crib
in the middle of a deep sleep.Cuh At that point,
I had not grabbed the pacifier.gh She was crying immediately.
Cuư I threw on jeans, but that was it.
Ǡ
 I didn't have a shirt on.
Meghan had Lila in her arms.CuP And we ran out the door. 8Cu As soon as the impact occurred,
ơ

what happened down there.
GCuh And near the machine room, 7 8 the chief engineer comes out,
all alarmed and scared.
Cu%8Сʁ He tells me it's a disaster downstairs,
water entering at full force. I felt helpless.Cu@ We burst out the door into the hallway.
ɡÁ
I was thinking the ship was just gonna be
slowly tipping over,Cu@3ʡā and in my head, It was just a race
to get to the lifeboat deck.ˡŁ And so we started just racing
up the stairs as fast as we could,CuW Meghan and the baby behind me.pCup The adrenaline starts rushing.
Panic was hitting.X Lila's been crying the whole time.
Cu@( We were taking stairs two by two, and I was holding the baby,
trying to keep up.蠛 I was struggling.wCu` I felt physically sick. I said, "I think I'm gonna throw up." Cu John said,
"Just throw up and keep running." "Just don't stop. Just keep going."xCu@ We got to the fourth level deck
where the lifeboats are.
ʡā
 And there was a couple
that passed out life vests to everybody.@Cux At this point, it was only a few people,
O
P and there was this ice of anxiety
that you have
Cuh with no one giving you information. No one was instructing us what to do.Cu/ And right then, the lights went out. 8CuXX It was just pitch black.𠽡 Suddenly I'm being separated
from Meghan and Lila.
Cu I don't know
if it was three stairs or 13 stairs, _ ` but they were not next to me.hCu( I was scared, and I remember yelling for him. "John! and don't let go."8CuˡŁ I had Lila in my arms
and just continued up two steps at a time.Cu@P The chief engineer
came to the bridge with me.ߠġ Together with Captain Schettino,
they open the ship plansgCu+ɡÁ and try to understand the damage
the ship has really suffered.hCuj¡ On the bridge,
the sound of the impact was hardly felt,(Cu@~ȡ while the people who were
in the restaurant in the back area,Ǡ they felt the full force of the impact.Cu@X Your attention, please.GH I speak on behalf of the captain.ߠ١Ӂ( We're currently in a blackout
as we're experiencing electrical failure.
oCu@6 At this point,
the situation is under control,oɡÁp and our technicians
are working to solve the situation.
Ǡ͡ǁ8 We'll give you further information
as it becomes available.
HCu[Сʁ They continued to say things like,
"Don't worry, everything is fine."Cu@q - "Go back to your room."
- "Go back to your room."ȡ We have made
an announcement on behalf of the captain./Cu@ We kindly ask you

"I'm not gonna go back to my room."7Cu@h - No way.
- There's no way.ҡ́ I don't even know if I could find the room
at that point, to be honest.Cu As I am going downstairs, I see that the passengers are very scared,
Cu֠ and they are asking me what has happened.
x
p And, not to go against
what the captain has said,
CuРӡ́ I couldn't give them a different version
as I would only do more damage.8Cu The inability to act. This is the problem. 8Cu. We don't know what's happening. ؠ Every announcement we heard, we believe.XCuLH We heard, okay, there is a minor fault.
PX The captain, whatever he said,
that's the final word.Cu@kؠϡɁ And I heard the chef saying,
"Oh, nobody… Don't move. Don't move."ϡɁ "Just stay there where you are
and be ready for the dinner service."HCu@ؠʡā It felt like it was a long time
before the lights came back on. We're still running up the stairs. Cu8ҡ́ And then finally we entered out
into the deck where the lifeboats were.0Cu먠 Hundreds and hundreds of people
shoulder to shoulder.
x You're hit with a wall of panic.
Cuѡˁ People yelling, arguing, trying to decide

on the nurturing and comfort of my child.CuP It was very hard
hearing and seeing Meghan struggle.
Cu( And at that point,

period of general confusion,_ҡ́` the captain was often on the phone
with the company crisis coordinator.CuD They didn't tell the truth
because, in my opinion,

and knocking the elevator door.XCu Four people went there. And we forced the door to open,

the ship was listing more and more.
Cup I remember thinking to myself,
"I can't stay here."WX "I need to get off the ship."pCu@ġ And as I'm walking along the corridor,

waiting what seemed like forever.Cu@8ȸءҁ During this whole time, the ship continued
to slowly tip further and further.GH We just felt like
every minute could be our last.
(Cu@80ɡÁ The lifeboats themselves
are probably ten or 15 feet below us.

The ocean was very rough,w8 so the boat's sort of banging
against the cruise ship.
Cu@9Pաρ And so even the process of being able
to get onto the lifeboat was a risk.
pp But somehow,
we climbed our way onto the boat.
Cu@9) We're so relieved.
We drove right out from under it.g0 I mean, and you look up
out the opening of the lifeboat,
Cu9H and we literally couldn't see sky.p The entire sky is
the side of the cruise ship.hCu9tH Lila had quieted.ϡɁ I remember holding her in my arms,
and I was hoping that she's okay,7Cu9 that nothing was wrong.PCu9pΡȁ I definitely felt like I'm all alone.
Nobody's coming to rescue us.xCu@9h Then we started hearing
helicopters going overhead.࠹( But the ship was covering us
like an umbrella.
Cu9︠ They can't see us.xסс I couldn't get down to the water level.
I couldn't get back inside the ship.?Cu@: At this point, we were sinking.Ƞ
And that was the momentСʁX when this little reel of my life
started playing in front of my eyes.Cu:Q I remember my dad saying that0H it shouldn't be
that children die before parents.Cu:Xġ So it was at that mo… moment
that that fight kicked in.hCu: I have to figure out how to survive.HCu@: At that point,
I think, "How can they see us?"@0 And then I realized
I have this flashlight in my pocket.PCu: I don't know Morse code,ǡ but I started flashing the light
to the boat in front of us.
pCu@;8 Rescue India Mike Alpha.
Rescue India Mike Alpha.

Go ahead, go ahead.̡Ɓp We have a signal from someone.
We're going to assist them.hCu;9 Okay, perfect.
P And then,
all of a sudden, this man floats downWCu;T like James Bond. Cu@;k We're pulled up into the helicopter,
and one at a time, they went back down
and got the other four.HCu@;ϡɁ All right, well done.
Received three people in good conditionwx who will be taken to Grosseto Airport, 7Cu;8 where people are waiting for first aid.
Cu@;0 When I flew away,
I could see everything that I loved and everything that was my reality
was gone.@Cu; But I was alive.@Cu< It was late on a Friday night.

what was really going onCu
