Original subtitles

(Multicom Jingle)

(engine roaring) (suspenseful music)

- [Narrator] Previously on "Grand Star."

- I was looking for some messages.

My dad used to leave 'em, and this is what I found.

- [Kurt] Brilliant, a renewer's cannon.

- You aim it at the sky to help bring the sun back.

- Do you think that we could use this to build a new one?

- [Suki] Imagine just to walk on grass, barefoot?

We'll never know.

- Suki, my father's dead.

- Don't jump to conclusions about your father.

- What other possibility could it be, Suki?

(plate clattering)

- Suki, stop.

- No, I never want to see you again.

- Your friend is still alive.

Professor Ragg, listen to me.

I will be attempting a bold experiment

with the people of the cold.

Lieutenant Damien will bring me some test subjects.

You will help me, or you will die.

(adventurous music) (train rails clacking)

(ice cracking)

(suspenseful music)

(engine roaring)

(picks hacking)

(computer beeping) (woman vocalizing)

- You were leading the men who killed my family.

(machines beeping)

(dramatic music)

- Come along, now.

Get a move on, you miserable bunch of animals.

Move.

(suspenseful music)

(card beeping)

(door hissing)

- Cal, Cal, your father, (panting) he's alive.

He's a prisoner, did you hear me?

Your father's alive, Cal (panting), okay?

It's the truth, Palidor told me,

he's keeping him locked up, I'm sorry.

- He's alive?

- Yeah.

- Where is he?

- I-- - I'll go get him.

- No, Cal, Cal, when I go and see Palidor,

it's because I'm trying to get things done.

Just let me go and see what I can find out.

- Be careful.

- I will.

Don't worry, they trust me.

(machines rumbling)

(scanner beeping)

- Eyes front, stand up straight, no talking.

Ready for you, sir.

(Palidor sniffing)

(Nara sniffs)

- Well, Hamsun, what do you think?

- They've all been examined by me

as well as by another position.

They're all quite well.

So it's your choice, really.

- It's just that, it's a female.

- (laughing) The genetic material we need

has nothing whatsoever to do with gender.

- Oh, really?

So you wouldn't mind if we tried it out on you?

- You mean, if you wanted me, no, I wouldn't mind.

- Don't worry, Hamsun, we don't have time for tests.

But just for a minute there, my little scientific friend

had a rush of adrenaline, didn't he?

- Yes, he did, didn't he.

(Professor Ragg breathes sharply)

- So Suki thinks that your dad's still alive?

- Yes, but listen, it's still up to us.

We haven't even located the cannon chamber.

- I've gotten in contact

with a few more of my Pointsman buddies.

- (scoffs) You know he always found friends

wherever he went.

- Yeah, he sure did.

- Anyway, I try to find ways

of keeping those people friendly.

- I hear you.

- Well, if you ask me,

I think those young Pointsmen are big, frustrated bullies.

- Yeah, they're just big bullies.

Yesterday they took my lunch money.

(Cal laughing)

- Look, Suki, I'll try to tell you something about Liam,

and maybe you could tell me a thing or two--

- [Suki] About?

(ball rolling)

(balls clicking)

- I don't know, would it be asking too much

to let me know what Palidor's plans are once in a while, hm?

- He's preparing for the end of Grand Star.

(ball rolling)

(balls clicking)

- Is he now?

- He wants to become able to endure low temperatures

so that he's not left out in the cold

when the dome freezes.

- Yes, yes, I know that.

No, I just wondered if you stumbled across something new.

Maybe you'd keep me informed, hm?

(ball rolling)

(balls clicking)

- Gladly.

- I miss your Cadbury eggs.

- So do I.

- Your shot.

(ball rolling)

(balls clicking)

(machines beeping)

(tubes hissing)

- Hello, hello, it's chilly, isn't it?

The room temperature.

I'm going to feel your temperature.

- Stay away from me.

- "Stay away from me."

No problem.

But soon, we're going to be one and the same--

- Shut up.

- Now, now.

- Whatever it is you're doing, it will kill you.

- You're a rebellious little thing, aren't you?

You don't like me very much, do you?

That's all right, I'm used to not being liked.

- I despise you.

Palidor?

You will lose.

(Palidor scoffs)

(logo whooshing)

(adventurous music)

- [Man] Hey, hi.

- Hi.

- I'm looking for Kurt.

- Kurt?

There's someone to see you.

- Hey.

- [Man] Hey.

- Just the man I wanted to see.

- Yeah.

(upbeat bar music)

- So have you decided what you're gonna do

with your new credits?

- I can't make up my mind.

My girlfriend's birthday's coming up soon.

I should really get her something nice.

- Yeah, how about a new dress?

- I thought about that.

What she really needs though, nowadays, is a new coat.

- Hm. - Okay.

Guess I'll go pay for the drinks.

- [Kurt] Yeah, yeah, go ahead.

I just take somebody's card, make them a little richer.

(machine beeping)

- Thank you. - Thank you.

- See, so we're in business.

- Yeah, (chuckles) so when do I get my next credits?

The big batch, I mean?

- Well, that comes after you tell us what you said you know.

- The whereabouts of that cannon chamber?

- Yeah, yeah, what else?

And meanwhile, I think that you can probably afford

to buy us another round, right?

- Oh, yeah, sure, sure.

(machines beeping) (tubes hissing)

- Let me talk to her.

- [Palidor] Leave her alone, she's asleep,

she needs her rest.

(plate clinking)

- I'm not hungry.

- Well, that's a shame.

I ordered all this food especially for you.

- Well, I lost my appetite.

- [Palidor] Suki, it's all going to be all right.

- Really, it will?

- Yes, she'll soon be out playing in the snow

with all her little friends from the people of the cold.

But tell me, what are the young people saying about me?

- Shut up, Palidor.

Look, young people don't talk about you all that much, okay?

They have better things to do, like, trying to keep warm.

- All right, all right.

How about Damien, what's he saying?

- Look, I don't, I don't wanna--

- You don't want to be a snitch, all right,

just make a movement of the head or nod, yes or no.

Does Damien want to take my place?

Is he thinking about it?

- It's hard to say.

It sounds like it.

- Thank you.

(upbeat bar music) - Okay.

- After that attack took place and the cannon was destroyed,

they saved a small piece of it and brought it over

to a Pointsman storehouse, the Area T storehouse.

- Storehouse, huh?

- Yeah, I served there.

- Okay, so then you know the layout of the place?

- Oh, yeah, I used to, but you know what?

I don't really remember much.

(Cal and Kurt laughing)

- What do you think of our friend here?

- You know, I think he's a very smart young man,

and I think he's gonna go a long way,

but I also think he likes his girlfriend very much.

- You know what, about your girlfriend?

- What about her?

- Why don't you get her the dress and the code?

She's gonna love you.

(machines beeping) (tubes whirring)

- [Palidor] What about her personality?

I'm concerned about it.

- Genetic elements we need to extract and graft

do not determine personality.

- That's what you say.

We don't know exactly where it's localized,

the personality, do we?

- Brain matter, neurotransmitters, the lymphatic system.

- Well, what if there was a leak?

What if the personality leaked into other genetic material?

How much do you know exactly?

- We know.

- Huh, that's reassuring.

Not.

(suspenseful music)

- [Kurt] This is it, the cannon's kept behind that gate.

My powers can't break chains.

- There's no way we're getting in there.

- Yeah, watch me.

(mesh rustling) (sneakers squeaking)

(Kurt exhales)

(mesh rustling) (sneakers squeaking)

Ah, there's no way we're getting in there.

- Yeah, and I'm afraid of heights.

- And apparently I'm no acrobat.

- You thinking what I'm thinking?

- I'm thinking about a fearless little friend that we had.

- Who used to be an acrobat.

- [Guard] What's going on there?

- Let's go, let's go, let's go.

- [Guard] Who could that be?

- Damien, wouldn't you say that Palidor is behaving

in a rather unreliable way?

- I don't know, Governor Cleary, is he?

- You know it, and I know it,

and we have to do something about it.

- What can we do?

- Well, you know, Damien, I've been watching you.

- And what have you noticed?

- I've noticed someone who's doing an admirable job.

I've also noticed someone whose talents are being wasted.

- (snickers) Yes, I see what you mean.

I have to admit, I hadn't given it much thought,

but please, continue.

- We live in difficult times,

and we need a different sort of leadership.

- Such as yours, for example?

(both laughing)

- No, that boat sailed a long time ago,

and people think I'm over the hill anyway.

- Over the hill? - Yeah.

- (scoffs) No, I've never heard that said about you.

- Can we cut the pleasantries, please?

Damien, you could replace Palidor.

- (scoffs) Oh, no. - Yes.

- Really?

- Well, think about it, it's logical.

- But I couldn't get there by myself.

You see, I believe you underestimate your capacities.

- Well, that may be true.

- Hm, well, what is there to be done?

- Suki, I'm worried sick, I haven't slept all night.

It was Damien and his cronies that found that creature.

- [Suki] So what do you want me to do?

- I'm going to introduce you to her.

Tell me what you think of her personality.

It's a little bit feisty, but that might be an asset

to me, on the other hand,

it could lead me down the road to chaos.

- I thought this graft just had to do with your being

able to endure the cold?

- But Hamsun and Damien may be in cahoots.

Maybe they're trying to turn me into a dangerous maniac.

Now, come on, come on.

- (groaning) Palidor, you already are a dangerous maniac.

- Now, now.

(machines beeping) (tubes hissing)

I'm going to leave you two alone to talk.

(logo whooshing) (ice crackling)

(mournful music)

- And then they rounded us up.

There was nothing we could do.

And now, he's got that experiment about to begin.

They're giving me chemicals

that are making me sick and crazy.

I may not survive it.

Please, please help me.

- I wish I could.

- Tell him I'm not fit.

Tell him I've got all kinds of diseases.

Tell him I'm a pervert.

- He might like that.

- Tell him I'm depressed and apathetic all the time.

Tell him it's genetic, it's in my blood.

- She's a bad person.

It's a bad idea.

She'll contaminate your entire being.

You'll be reborn, as you say,

but with a totally messed-up mind.

- (chuckling) And you were born

with a big, fat heart of gold.

Suki, I know what you're trying to do.

You're trying to save her.

I'd thought about it,

and then she reminded me of someone I knew,

and I just discovered who.

- Who?

- It's you, Suki.

This will do me a world of good.

- Where is she, she was supposed to meet me here?

I gave her two days to find out about my dad,

and I haven't heard from her.

- Maybe she got in trouble?

Maybe Palidor suspects her, maybe she's been arrested?

- Oh, no.

(suspenseful, adventurous music)

- Nara, Nara, wake up, Nara.

Palidor wants me to look after you,

but I'm gonna get you out of here,

come on-- - I wanna sleep.

- No, get up, come on.

- Let me sleep forever.

- Get up, get up, come on, here, get into these clothes.

- Not now.

- Yes, now.

Come on, it's now or never.

(Nara moans)

Just hang in there.

Can't you go any faster?

- No.

- We have to, you just have to, come on, in there.

Cut it out.

- It's like a kiss, I'm grateful, Suki.

- Okay, don't talk, just walk.

- Suki, where've you been?

We need you, we have to go get the cannon chamber,

Cal's waiting for you.

Who is she?

- Uh, a woman, a woman of the cold.

(dramatic music) Nara.

Just look after her, will you?

- Yeah, yeah.

Hey, I'm Kurt.

- I'm Nara.

- [Cal] Come on, it's the only way to get to the cannon.

Suki, at least let me give you a boost.

(suspenseful, adventurous music)

(chains clanging)

(shoes squeaking) (mesh rustling)

(melancholy, inspirational music)

- Good.

(Nara swallowing)

Good.

(exhales)

You're back.

- Did they make it?

- Yeah, they did.

So did you.

- [Cal] Now, it's time to go find my dad.

(logo whooshing) (ice crackling)

(suspenseful, adventurous music)

(Multicom Jingle)
