Hi and welcome to the inventors Learning Center course do it yourself.

Patten's searching paten research for independent inventors and entrepreneurs.

My name is Stuart Walsh and I'm one of the instructors here at I'll see.

Combined we have over 30 years of experience in inventing patenting and entrepreneurship in all those

years we've spent plenty of time answering questions from new inventors about how the process works.

About paten research about getting patents and about getting your products on the shelves in assembling

this and other ILC courses.

We're creating a complete curriculum so that you can get all of your questions answered in one place.

The goal of all our courses is to educate inventors and entrepreneurs about the skills they need to

succeed in this course will be teaching you the ins and outs of the massive often confusing world of

Pan research.

We've designed this course with independent inventors in mind that's people with a new invention.

In some phase of development and they want to get some searching done to maybe see if they should be

moving any farther.

However there's more to research than just getting that binary yes no answer about whether or not you

should move on.

Research is also an important tool for developing your invention once you get in and start looking at

the patents you're going to have a much better idea of what's missing how you can refine your invention

to the point where it's not only going to be patentable but also successful in the marketplace.

Also your research is an important input into your patent application.

When you apply for a patent you're almost always going to get some sort of a rejection.

But the more you know about what you're up against the more research you've done the better chance you're

going to have of addressing things actively in your application and therefore being able to overcome

things with greater ease.

For this course we're going to be using free search services such as Google Patten's free patents online

and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and for recording and organizing our search we're going to

be using relatively inexpensive or free tools like Microsoft Excel or Google Spreadsheets and like I

said before everything you learn in your search can be used to improve your invention and increase your

chances of getting a patent and this course we're going to start with a section on the basic terms and

concepts for patent research patents have a look and language all their own and it can be very bewildering.

So hopefully when we get through with all of that you'll have a pretty good handle on the basic terms

and concepts then we'll learn about the preliminaries of research how to set things up so that you have

everything ready to go when you actually get into searching.

And then we're going to go through a full patent search and after we finished the patent search we're

going to look at some of the more advanced tools that you can use to do further searching.

We want to make sure that this course stays current for as long as possible.

So if there are any major changes to the spreadsheets or search tools we're going to update those sections

of the course.

So with that in mind let's get into the first section.
