This programme contains strong

Katie Simpson, aged 21,
arrived on her own in an ambulance,

having attempted
to take her own life.

We were just hoping Katie
was going to pull through.

There was a view from policing
that this was a suicide.

Katie Simpson was known
as a fantastic rider.

All her friends were also connected
to that horsey and equestrian word.

She always looked with
a smile on her face.

She had everything to live for.

There were some who realised
this was not as it seemed.

Something that was going on in her
life that she had to keep a secret.

I looked at some of the information
that was available on suicides.

Katie Simpson didn't fit
the profile.

There was a definite
orchestrated campaign

to make sure that I couldn't
investigate this.

It became most intense
where I got a call to tell me,

"You're just trying to turn
a suicide into murder.

"You're trying to make a name
for yourself. You're a disgrace."

Every corner you turn,
there's a big, flashing red flag

that this has been a murder,

and yet they continue
to treat it as a suicide.

I had to find answers.

What has happened to Katie?

I remember when Katie was born,
you know...

...she was a beautiful wee baby,
you know, like all babies, but...

...she was, she was beautiful.

Katie Simpson was born in Armagh,
in Middletown.

Her mother was Noeleen,
father Jason.

She had an older sister,
Christina,

and Rebecca,
the other older sister.

She had a younger brother also.

They were all very close.

Loved going to the beach
with her family

and surfing and things like that,

and carrying on in the water,
in the sea.

The pictures and the images
that we have of Katie

show that she was happiest
when she was around horses

and that was the one great love
of her life.

She was a really, really good
show-jumper

and had a fantastic career
ahead of her.

Katie, she was like a daredevil,
you know?

Fearless.

She would have jumped any jump.

Wouldn't have mattered to her,
she'd give it a go,

and just loved being
near the horses.

Katie was a young woman
full of hope for the future.

A good friend to many people
who loved her

within that horsey circle.

She comes across as an infectious,

very, very loving person,
trusting person.

She had so much to offer life.

It was a Monday morning,
we were just in the house

and having breakfast...
PHONE RINGS

...and I got a phone call,
which was very early,

so I thought, "What's wrong?"

So I answered and it was Daddy
on the phone

telling me that Katie had apparently
done something to herself,

and I said, "What do you mean?",
and he says, "I don't know,

"but I think she's done something
to harm herself

"and she's in the hospital now."

POLICE SIREN

Katie Simpson, aged 21,
arrived on her own in an ambulance

at Altnagelvin Hospital, having
attempted to take her own life.

Like, how could Katie have done
this? I just didn't believe it.

On the 3rd of August, Katie had
been found by Jonathan Creswell

and taken to hospital.

He had found his young
sister-in-law hanging.

So me and my daughter
went to the hospital...

...and met Christina, my niece -
Katie's sister.

She was just standing outside crying
and everyone just hugged and I says,

"What happened?", and she says,
"I don't know. She's hung herself."

I knew the police were there, but I
didn't know that much at that stage.

You know, they were still working
with Katie at that time.

Katie lived with her sister,
Christina,

and Christina's partner at
the time, Jonathan Creswell.

Creswell was in a relationship with
Christina Simpson, Katie's sister,

and he had children to her and they
all lived under the same house.

Creswell was very well known
within the equestrian circle.

He was someone who was known on
both sides of the Irish border

and even further afield.

When I was at shows
and competitions,

it was usually Katie riding

and Jonny would have been
warming her up,

and he was praising her and getting
her ready to go into the ring.

Katie was Jonathan's protege.

Jonathan was looking after her,

preparing her for a career
as a jockey.

Teaching her.

We're here at Altnagelvin Hospital
in Derry,

where Katie has been taken
by the paramedics.

She's gone straight into A&E,

where they've worked on her in A&E
before moving her quickly to ICU

because of the condition
she was in.

My sister does believe that Katie
was trying to tell her something

in the hospital.

My sister could feel it
coming from her body.

We were all sitting in
the relatives' room.

But the thing was,
all the police just left.

Uniformed officers do not think
there's anything untoward.

It's a young girl that has
attempted to commit suicide.

It was so hard sitting
outside the door,

feeling useless and helpless.

The facts was, Katie was
lying in there in a coma.

It must have been shocking
for the family.

You know, the last time
they saw Katie

is jumping at a showjumping event
in Lurgan,

to suddenly lying in a hospital,
hooked up to a life support machine,

and not being able to breathe
for herself or sustain life.

It was hard just saying,
"Come on, Katie, wake up",

and, you know, "We miss you",
and, you know, "They love you",

and, "We all love you", and...

..."Just wake up."

We were just hoping Katie
was going to pull through.

Katie was in a very serious
condition.

I think there was a specialist
had come that Friday -

maybe a brain specialist.

I think they knew that
it wouldn't be long.

After numerous efforts had been
made by the doctors and nurses,

Katie died on the 9th of August.

You just felt lost...

...and I just felt...

...so much for my sister.

For my parents
to lose their grandchild.

It was just unimaginable.

It was just a sad atmosphere. Just
sadness in the air with everyone.

The cause of death was
lack of oxygen to the brain

and then brain failure
due to a lack of oxygen.

A lot of people were just treating
this as a really terrible tragedy,

you know, that a young woman
had lost her life

in this way so suddenly.

There was a view from policing
that this was a suicide.

That Katie Simpson
had taken her own life.

MACHINES BEEP

The nurses,
from the day she came in,

were concerned there was
something more to this.

Some had raised concerns
about her injuries.

They were concerned by the bruising

and the general state
of Katie's body.

It was then the wee doubts.

Where I was asking,
"Where's your phone?"

Like, what teenager
doesn't have her phone?

Where did it go?

A couple of days after,
my partner had said to me,

"I don't know,
there's something not right here."

Some people, maybe, in the family
were, like, "Oh, my goodness,

"was she not happy?",
and, "Why did we not see it?"

She always looked with a smile on
her face and happy and cheerful.

Why did she not come and tell us
that she was in bad form?

She never looked in bad form. Like,
we could have done something here.

She was happy.

Nobody said that it's suicide,
but nobody was saying it wasn't.

It's the sort of thing where you...

It's so delicate,
you don't want to say.

PHONE RINGS

On Tuesday, the 11th of August,

I got a call, it was just
after lunch, around half one.

This woman introduced herself,
said she was a journalist

and had remembered me from
the last murder trial I worked on.

And she started to go through
how this young lady

had been found hanging
by her sister's partner.

She said people were concerned
her phone was missing,

her laptop was missing.

They couldn't understand it.

They couldn't make sense of why
Katie would take her own life.

She'd bought a new pair
of riding boots,

she was out socialising
with her friends,

she had all these events coming up,

her sister was due
to give birth soon.

The way she was living her life,

she had everything, literally,
to live for.

I worked in Armagh
in the Murder Investigation Team.

I rang the Derry Major Investigation
Team that would be investigating it.

I said were they aware
of this incident

where Katie Simpson was alleged
to have been found hanging.

Her reply to me was,
"Why are you looking at this?

"Can you not see that she
hung herself last week?

"That's why we're not
looking at it."

So when I saw this, I wanted
to find out more information,

so I started looking at
the police systems to see

what else I could find out
about this incident.

This is the house where
Jonathan Creswell,

Christina, Katie and Rose
all lived together.

Rose de Montmorency-Wright,

who worked along with them
in the equestrian industry.

She was an 18, 19-year-old
at the time,

came from Newtownards,

living in a room with Katie Simpson.

Rose describes her relationship
with Katie as good.

They were friends.

They shared a bedroom,
they worked together.

It was a hard-working existence.

In this industry, there really
isn't much money in it,

and you're working hand-to-mouth.

They were up early in the morning,
out to train horses,

back in the afternoon,
train horses in the evening.

It was long hours.

To the outsider, Christina and Katie
appeared to be living

an idyllic life,

working with horses,

working in the outdoors,

in the fresh air,
and a comfortable existence.

On the 3rd of August 2020,

Christina left first in the morning
early to go to work.

When Christina left the house,
she went into Katie's room,

saw Katie lying in the bed,
didn't want to wake her.

Then Rose left, erm...

...around half seven to go to work,

when she was meant to
go to work with Katie.

Why she wasn't going to work,
only Rose knows.

So, on the Monday morning,

Jonathan Creswell said
that he got up,

got his kids ready,
took them to his mother's...

...and he was driving back
to the house

where Katie was

and that he was on the phone
to Hayley Robb.

Hayley Robb lived in Banbridge,

which is about 50, 60 miles away
from Derry,

and she worked with Creswell.

Jonathan, on his way back from
his mother, calls Hayley Robb,

and as he walked through the door,
he shouts at Haley,

"Oh, no... Oh, no, Katie.
No, Katie."

And then saying to Hayley
that Katie's hung herself

and telling Hayley
to call an ambulance.

Then the phone goes dead.

He goes in, sees Katie hanging
from the banister.

He says he uses one hand
to untie the clip on the strap,

get her down, get the strap
from around her neck,

put her in the car.

We're on the Tirbracken Road,

which is a road that comes
out of Gortnessy.

And this is the road where Creswell,

when he put Katie in the car,
was travelling down.

He receives a call
from Ambulance Control,

which tell him to pull in
immediately,

to lay Katie flat and to begin CPR.

Ambulance Control
remain on the phone,

giving him instructions
until the paramedics arrive.

On this call, the Ambulance Service
are asking him, "Is she breathing?",

and what to do,
and you can hear Jonathan

perform CPR by going,
"One, two, three, one, two, tree..."

The ambulance arrived
and they took over.

They're trying to get
a heart rhythm back.

They're working intensively on her.

They asked one of the police
officers to drive the ambulance

because they needed to work
on Katie in the back

and they needed to get her to
the hospital as soon as they could.

They knew she was in
a very bad state.

When the police arrived,

they put Creswell in the back
of their police car.

The police officer asked him,

"What was your relationship
with this girl?",

and he was saying
it's his partner's sister,

he just came back
and he found her hanging.

Police asked for the address.

He's confused, and he gives
a different address

in Gortnessy Meadows.

SIREN

Katie Simpson is placed
in the back of the ambulance.

Police tell Jonathan Creswell
to follow them.

The ambulance and police cars
then leave

and travel towards the hospital.

The morning of the funeral, there
was so many people on the streets

of Middletown and so many people
coming out to pay their respects.

I think there was two or three
car loads in all -

all the staff and everyone
up together.

They're all sitting around her
in coffin.

We all went together, in the yard.

She had horses there and you
could just tell that she was

loved by so many people.

That was really hard,

you know, to watch my sister
bury her baby girl and...

So, so hard.

Jonny Creswell,
oh, he was, like, crying,

and his hands on his head

and "his Katie", like,

and, you know, "Lovely girl",
"She's a lovely girl."

When I seen him distraught,
I was, like,

well, yeah, they lived in the same
house and things like that,

so I knew that would be natural -
to be that upset.

He was sitting at the coffin
and he's just rubbing

and petting her hair.

Jonny was one of the first people
that you went and shook hands with

after Katie was buried.

A friend of ours had
come down to the house

and voiced his concerns that
he thought Jonny Creswell had

something to do with this -
with Katie's death.

Paul Lusby is his name, and Paul was
actually Jonathan Creswell's cousin.

Paul Lusby was involved in the
horsey community in the Derry area.

He knew Katie, he knew Christina,

he knew all these individuals
around the Derry Meadows area.

He knew himself that there was
something suspicious about this.

He saw Creswell at the funeral,
how he was acting.

Because it just didn't sit right
with him either.

I felt I couldn't really say this
to my sister

because she was in the middle of
the worst nightmare of any parent.

And then for me to come
and talk about...

Which could have been nonsense.

Erm, I wouldn't have done that
to her.

We went into the police station

and just sort of were
trying to say to them

we think maybe it wasn't suicide.

That maybe this man is dangerous

and he could harm somebody else.

They just had said
to us at that stage,

if I remember right,
that they would just pass it on.

From August,
Katie was in the hospital.

We, as a family, the police have
never come to us and spoke to us.

And then Anne and I got
this first phone call...

...and he introduced himself
as James Brannigan.

The first thing he said is,
"How are yous all?"

It just hit me, you know,
like, "Wow. Somebody cares."

Somebody's asking a simple question
like, "How are yous?"

Nobody official had ever asked that.

Paula was grateful that we were
doing something about it.

We're going to investigate and we're
going to get to the bottom of this.

When I started looking
at this incident,

I was able to look at the log

of what investigation actions
had taken place.

I was able to look at
the autopsy photographs.

CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS

There was no ligature mark

and a small mark on the left side
of her neck, a cut on her lip.

The pathologist, when I spoke
to him, said that he had given

a cause of death as possible hanging

because of the information
that he had.

During the autopsy, he asked
police to ring the individual

who had found Katie,
Jonathan Creswell.

If he had found Katie, he could say
whether it was a self-hanging

or it was a strangulation.

As a result of this, the pathologist
put the cause of death

as only possible hanging,

yet it's recorded on
the police system as hanging

and there's nothing suspicious
about the death.

The pathologist did not say that

and I don't know why somebody
committed that to the log.

A detective was sent
to the postmortem.

A detective will only usually
be sent to a postmortem

if it's a suspicious death,

so was it suspicious
or was it not suspicious?

Katie attended emergency departments
on multiple occasions

over a two-year period

with some very, very serious
injuries.

I believe on one occasion
with a broken back.

But I also understand
that Jonathan Creswell

also attended with her
on each of those occasions.

Nurses told me how bizarre
Creswell's behaviour was.

He was acting like
he was Katie's partner

and they just felt uncomfortable

when Creswell was in and around
Katie in the hospital.

All the nurses we spoke to
remember this vividly,

of how Katie appeared.

The bruises,
the lack of ligature mark,

the vaginal bleeding
that didn't make sense to them

and the blood staining
on her underwear.

They were physically upset
because the impact this had on them.

I remember one nurse saying they
still remember the bed she was in

in ICU.

The nurses carrying that guilt.

Like, "I knew there was something
wrong, and nothing was done."

They literally did not wash Katie

because they're waiting for the
forensic examination to take place,

waiting for the police to come in.

And they never arrived.

A nurse had rang me
because she was a family friend.

I told her to go to talk
to the detectives in Derry.

She told them everything.
I was delighted.

I said, "Did you make a statement?",
and she said, "No."

The detective she met told her she
didn't need to make a statement.

This was really concerning.
Why a detective is telling somebody

with this information that they
didn't need to make a statement?

My senior officers, my team,

they were all flabbergasted
that nothing was happening.

Even my Detective Chief Inspector
said, in his own words,

"They're playing a dangerous game
up there."

We just could not understand

why they were refusing
to investigate.

It just didn't make sense.

I didn't know what else
I could do at this point.

My own Chief Inspector told me that
there was emails being circulated

in Derry that I was not to be
included in any information

in relation to
the Katie Simpson incident.

I was receiving calls from officers

when I was looking to discuss
practicalities

over things that had happened
to Katie on the day.

This really angered me.

There was a definite
orchestrated campaign

to make sure that I couldn't
investigate this,

but who was behind it and who was
controlling this, I didn't know,

and that was worrying.

And it kind of just drove me on.

It became most intense
where I got a call to tell me,

"You're just trying to turn
a suicide into murder.

"You're trying to make
a name for yourself.

"You're a disgrace."

At that point, I just hung up.

Jonathan Creswell, to his friends,
was known as Jonny.

You knew that Jonny Creswell
had a lot of girls in friendship.

There was Rose and Katie.

They were all about
showjumping together.

Jonny really liked going to shows
and then everybody was patting him

on the back and saying, "God, you
have a great bunch of girls there",

you know, "They're great at
what they do", and, "Lucky you."

He was in demand as a trainer
and so people were actually

queuing up in order to try and
get him to take on their children

and to take on their young daughters
who aspired to greatness.

He had a number of skills
and he had competed.

His name mattered to people
in the equestrian industries.

Really what he was doing
was grooming them.

Creswell was in quite
a powerful position.

I first met Jonny at a horse show.

This was my very first experience
as a groom.

He came into the arena

and immediately came over
to my boss at the time.

When he was talking to my boss,
you know,

he kept looking at me,
he kept smiling,

he had, like, a twinkle in his eye.

I thought he had really nice blue
eyes, which makes me feel sick,

even thinking back to it now.

What happened between Jonny and I
happened literally...

...the same day I met him.

It must have been around...

...between 12 and one or so,
maybe a little earlier.

I was just texting on my phone

and I heard someone say my name
and I looked up.

And it was Jonny.

I thought,
"Jesus, this is great", like.

This apparently very,
you know, good rider

is chatting away to me,

and I'm just this wee girl,
like, I'm at a horse show,

like, why is he chatting to me?

I said, "Right, I'm going to head
back to the lorry now and go to bed.

"Up early in the morning",
or whatever.

Literally, we were just walking out.

He was all, "Come this way."
I said, "The lorry's down here."

He just took me around the side
of the arena and he assaulted me.

Kissing me, touching me everywhere,

hands down in my pants,
my boobs, everything.

I remember seeing loads
of Facebook posts

from my mutual friends on Facebook.

"Rest in peace, Katie."

I was in total shock.

But somebody had posted their
condolences for Katie

and in the post they said,

"My thoughts go out to Jonny
and the family."

But what the fuck had Jonny
got to do with Katie?

Florentyna Anderson contacted me.

I remember talking to her
and her describing

how Creswell had attacked her.

It is about this physical control...

...and power that he believes
he has over women.

I just wanted to be accepted

in the horsey world at that age
because it was my first show.

It was my first chance
at being a groom.

And I played it off like
I wasn't affected,

like, by him just groping me
everywhere,

and I just felt so gross.

You know, pure slobbery
and being pressed up against

and the feeling of his icky gut,
and...

I just wanted to not...

...cause a scene
because I didn't know him.

But, yeah, it's kind of like
your lifetime bubble being burst...

...and having to migrate
your career path

and your mindset to
a totally different direction,

which is quite hard
when it's been your entire life.

Working with horses wasn't for me,

and I don't work with horses
any more.

Creswell had attacked her
at Millstreet Show,

which is in Cork in the South of
Ireland, in the Republic of Ireland.

As it was a different jurisdiction,
a different country,

we couldn't investigate it here.

I was on a mission to find out
what had happened to Katie.

I went out and met
a very close friend of Katie.

I spent a number of hours with them,
and what they painted for me

was a shocking picture of how
this individual, Jonathan Creswell,

was controlling Katie Simpson.

They were explaining how Katie
was this bubbly...

...lovely young girl, up to mischief,
just like a normal young girl,

but as soon as Creswell turned up,
her demeanour totally changed.

I was under no illusion
leaving that house

that I had to find answers.

They weren't saying,
"He's killed her",

but, "What has happened to Katie?"

James Brannigan and I have worked
together for a long time

and he had a number of suspicions
about this case,

so we had a chat about
what he believed at that time

were some of the issues
surrounding this investigation.

I didn't give him my thoughts
or opinions.

I wanted him to look at it
independently.

I do think that there were some
within the PSNI

who realised that this
was not as it seemed.

There was intelligence
coming forward

to connect Jonathan Creswell
to a previous conviction

for serious assault.

That wasn't picked up on
the police computer record system.

Instead, we were told
that one officer found

a news article when he googled
Creswell's name.

Jonathan Creswell
had a criminal record.

Every corner you turn,
there's a big, flashing red flag.

And it was a serious attack

on his previous partner,
Abigail Lyle.

This has been a murder and yet they
continue to treat it as a suicide.

CHEERING

Abi Lyle was Creswell's partner.

She's a very famous show-jumper.

She's someone who had great success
in the Olympics.

He was physically abusive to her
on numerous occasions.

I spoke to the domestic violence
officer who had dealt with the case.

And to hear it from the police point
of view of what this individual did

painted a shocking picture
of who this individual was

and what he was capable of.

I watched the video
that Abigail Lyle had done

where she was detailing the attack

that Jonathan Creswell
did on Abigail Lyle.

During this attack, she was dragged
into a forest on one occasion...

...beaten repeatedly.

Jonathan was threatening
to bury her in the forest.

On another occasion,
he filled a bath full of bleach

and threatened to put Abigail
in the bleach.

When it came to court, he knew
he was going to go to prison,

and if he pleaded guilty,
the PPS then agreed to set

some of the charges aside,

or "left them on the books",
as the term is called.

He spent, I believe,
six months in prison

for the assault on Abigail Lyle.

Creswell came out of prison,
and when he came out of prison

there was actually a party held
in his honour to celebrate

his homecoming, and he just
slotted back into his working life

as normal, as if none of this
had ever happened.

He was so celebrated even then...

...because of his persona.

He really gave off the impression
that he could do no wrong.

"Poor me, poor me. This bad,
bad woman put me in prison.

"I did nothing wrong."

He gave off this air and grace
of sheer confidence

and that he was the best
and that he could talk to anybody.

He could get a horse to do anything.

He continued to be revered,
he continued to have access

to very young women and there
didn't seem to be any attempts

to try and stop him.

James Brannigan was concerned it
wasn't being properly investigated.

He believed a major investigation
team should be looking into it.

He had concerns that it wasn't
receiving proper attention.

I looked at some of the information
that was available on suicides

and Katie Simpson didn't fit the
profile. There was no suicide note.

James and I discussed who we
would want to speak to first.

But at that time
they weren't calling it a murder.

We were just investigating
the death of Katie Simpson.

We asked two detectives from
the Major Investigation Team

and two detectives from CID in Derry
to meet with Jonathan Creswell

and Christina Simpson
on Monday night at half seven.

I'd made it perfectly clear to them
that we needed two statements taken,

one from Christina, one from Jonny.

When the officers spoke to Jonathan
and Christina, they rang me back.

Christina gave an account
to police

with regard to the living situation,
who was in the house,

and gave us more background.

He just continued to tell
the same version of events.

He claims that he went to drop his
children off, and that when he

came back, he walked through
the door and found Katie hanging.

Creswell also painted a picture
that Katie was depressed.

Both Christina and Jonathan's
version of events

were quite similar -

that they had been concerned for
Katie over the last number of weeks.

She had been acting erratically

and believed that she was going to
do something like commit suicide.

From the outset,
one of the main questions

we had to have answered was,
"Where was Katie's phone?"

It would be of great value.
It may have given information.

Had Katie been googling suicide?
Who was she in contact?

If she was frightened.

Creswell put forward an idea that
he initially wanted to lay her down

in the back of the car and threw
all the items out onto the road.

So I had spoken at length to
paramedics and I'd asked them,

"Was there any items thrown
across the road or out of the car

"when you attended to Katie?",
and they had said there wasn't.

Jonny had said to the officers
that Katie's Find my iPhone

had been turned off.

Why would Jonathan,

the partner of Katie's sister,

want to know where Katie
was located?

It just didn't make sense.

Jonathan Creswell would have been
asked about his relationship

with Katie.

They said there was no relationship
between the two.

Jonanthan Creswell
is her brother-in-law.

What I was disturbed,
or what concerned me,

when I spoke to these officers is
that no statement had been taken.

Why were the police in Derry
acting like this

and who had told these officers
not to take a statement

from Christina, from Jonny?

There was considerable institutional
and hierarchical resistance

to a changed narrative
on the Katie Simpson case.

SIREN

So when an officer comes forward
and challenges senior officers

over their set views on things

and how an investigation
has been proceeding,

that can create a lot of internal
hostility, tensions,

and can create, I suppose,

potentially, a level
of dysfunctionality.

We wanted to speak to
Rose de Montmorency-Wright,

who lived in the address.

We wanted to speak to Hayley Robb,
who was a close friend of the group.

Hayley Robb said she was travelling
from Banbridge,

was arranging to meet Jonathan
Creswell to go and clip horses.

She is the person that contacted
the Ambulance Service.

Jonathan rings Hayley
and keeps her on the phone

for the whole journey
back from his mother.

She explains to us that she didn't
know why he was keeping her

on the phone as they were going to
see each other very soon.

So Hayley calls an ambulance,

so our query is why did he not
contact the Ambulance Service?

Why is this woman contacting
the Ambulance Service?

The first suspicion was raised to me

when Hayley Robb
contacted the police.

Hayley told the police that a woman
called Jill Robinson had rang her

to remind her to tell police that
Katie had been trampled by a horse,

and this is where the bruises
were meant to have come from.

Katie died from suicide, allegedly.

What has that got to do with her
being trampled by a horse?

And why is this woman not
telling the police herself?

Jill Robinson was an ex-girlfriend
of Jonathan Creswell.

She's slightly older and was someone
who was involved more in the sort of

training aspect of those horses
and someone who, even when Creswell

was convicted of domestic violence
against Abi Lyle,

she continued to keep
a relationship with him.

When I pulled up in the yard, I got
out to talk to Jill and I said,

"I believe you saw Katie
being trampled by a horse."

She says, "No, I never saw it
but I know where it happened.

"I could see on the grass

And I said, "Was there an imprint
of Katie's face on the ground?"

Then she says, "Come over here"...

...and takes myself and my colleague
into a horse box and she goes,

"Look how tight it is in here.
You could easily get bruises."

And I just turned around
to her and said,

"Why are you trying to put bruises
on Katie? She died from suicide."

She was very keen to promote
a narrative

which included Katie
getting injured by a horse.

We weren't convinced that
that was how the injury occurred.

Chris Faloon had been a jockey
and he worked with Katie.

I knew to contact Chris.

Chris told me she would never
have fallen from a horse.

She's too good of a horsewoman.
She wouldn't be trampled by a horse.

And he was so adamant about this,
how foolish this could be,

but he said he would still find out,

and he rang his friends
who were at the show in Lurgan

and he came back to me and said,
"No, she never fell from a horse."

Part of Jonathan Creswell's
demeanour

in terms of all of the women
he engaged with,

he came across as a man
who had a way with words,

and he used that to his advantage.

Creswell had a reputation as someone
who was sexually inappropriate

with a lot of the young women
who were in his charge.

There was a certain amount of unease
in the Simpson family

when Creswell and Christina
started being in a relationship.

My sister and Katie's dad,
they tried everything

to get her away from him
but, teenage girls, it's hard.

Jonathan Creswell had been convicted

in relation to domestic violence
assaults on Abigail Lyle.

My understanding is that
Jill Robinson took Christina

up to prison to visit
Jonathan Creswell.

Christina would have been
a juvenile at the time,

whereas Jonny was in his
late teens, early 20s.

The view, I think, that was taken
in the equestrian world,

that all of these women
were just silly little girls

who gaggled around Creswell
and that no-one really cared.

But in many cases
they were being coerced

and threatened in violence and
Katie was terrified of Creswell.

Katie had started a relationship
with a man called Shane McCloskey,

who lived in Derry.

It's very strange to me
that she felt that

she had to keep that quiet,
that she had to keep it secret.

Katie contacted Shane
and asked Shane to come down.

They both left in separate cars.

When Shane was driving through
Omagh, he was seen by another woman.

And this chance meeting
really lit the fuse.

Ultimately started
a domino effect...

...which ends in Katie's death.

as part of his property.

What happened in the house
that morning?

She was clearly in fear
of Creswell finding out

that she had been in the company
of another man.

He was just calling me
everything underneath the sun.

Telling me to shut my fucking mouth.

I knew now the pressure was on.

There's so much evidence here.

They protected him.

I was wishing to see justice
for Katie.

This is it happening now
and the clock is running.

We travelled to the court
and Katie's mother was crying.

People need to know
what happened to Katie.
