So my name is Molly Meggyesy.

I think of myself as a brave person, but

I've never attempted a stunt like this.

If my mother and father fo und out they would

say this is something that

crazy white people do.

My name is Emily Resling and my friends

are always saying like, you have this

yoga body and you have

such a great physique.

And my first thought is always like, you

just haven't seen me naked,

is what I always say, you

just haven't seen me naked.

My name is Marlene Vale.

Even for me who's

adventuresome and outgoing,

this one is a little bit tough.

[Steady Rainfall]

[UPBEAT MUSIC]

It's a classic dream, everybody's had it.

You dream you're in a room, you're at the

mall, maybe you're at your high school

reunion and you're chatting and you're

having a good time and you look down and

you're naked.

To me, the idea of riding through the

parade is the living out of that dream.

Petrifying fear.

My name's Barbara Luecky.

So the very first parade was in 1989.

And we had about 90 people in the parade

and it was a huge amount of fun.

And it was ridiculous and on a shoe

string, worse than a

shoe string, a thread.

The first year, I think we were only in

half the street because of the permit.

We went from 300 people in the first

audience to 100,000.

Close your eyes, make a

wish, and it is granted for you.

Certainly this city was really ripe for

some sort of different thing to happen.

People were looking for

a means of expression.

And here come the bikers.

Tell me about being on that bike.

It's fine.

One night, the parade director, Al

Parizzi, stopped by.

He just wanted to give me a heads up that

there were gonna be some

streakers in the parade.

[MUSIC]

The Naked Bicycles started off with a

couple of, I believe they were guys,

streaking on bicycles,

just riding down the street.

There's a few more and a few more and a

few more for the next few years.

I can't remember exactly when it started

to really get a mass that was starting

to be annoying to the

police and to the city officials.

Listen please, if you are interested in

doing synchronized cycling,

you need to find the two

referees over there right now.

The problem there was that the cyclists

were not part of the parade and

the Arts Council and the parade people

had no control over them.

They were crashers.

They were kind of giddy with the fact

that they were being sort of naughty and

running around naked in public.

Riding on their bicycles

wearing nothing but paint.

Of course the press loved to latch onto

the facts that the naked b ikers were

showing up.

What place do naked bicycle

riders have in our society?

What place?

It's America, it's freedom.

It's freedom in all

senses of the word, I guess.

It became a little frustrating to have

all the other work that was going on in

the parade and then it seemed like the

lowest common denominator was what

the press was latching onto.

[APPLAUSE]

Yeah, we're wondering why they all have

their clothes on though.

It's kind of strange, I don't understand.

I talked to a lot of people about the

parade, I love to talk about it.

And people go, the Naked Parade, that's

what people say, right?

And then I go, man,

there's so much more than that.

When I'm talking to people and I say I

live in Fremont and they're like,

yeah, that's where you

have the Naked Bike Parade.

And I say, no, that's where

we have the Solstice Parade.

We have some Naked

Bicyclists that parade before it.

There was active discussion among the

Arts Council and the

members of the Fremont

community about whether the cyclists

should have a role at all and

what to do because they were coming in

and sort of stealing the limelight.

[APPLAUSE]

They were taking the limelight that had

been created by the Arts Council in

the parade, people were

coming to see the parade.

And they were jumping out and saying,

hey, look at me, look at me.

[APPLAUSE]

Today you could say they

were sort of like spam.

I've never been to the Solstice Parade.

I've heard fun stories about it.

I always figured I'd do it one day.

I guess I admire the people that have the

nerve to get out there and do it.

I see it as sort of a

celebration of the human form and

of the sense of liberation and sort of

that playfulness that can come with

being naked as opposed to the extremely

sexual element of it.

And I always just thought

those people were so brave.

That's a big rock.

Do you remember what we talked about?

Yeah.

How when you're climbing and you're

wearing your harness, you can't fall.

[BLANK_AUDIO]

No matter what.

I've kind of gotten in the pattern of

trying to continually

challenge myself and

climbed a mountain last summer.

I can't.

If I can still touch

you, you're not high.

See?

Got you.

A couple years ago in my 20s, I picked up

and moved to a foreign country.

I didn't know anyone.

I didn't speak the language.

I didn't have, I wasn't

signed up for a school.

I didn't have a job.

I just went and said, I'm gonna immerse

myself in the culture here.

And yeah, it was quite challenging, but

one of the most

rewarding experiences of my life.

[BLANK_AUDIO]

The thing that really gets me at the

core, I think, is that I

can be pretty self-critical.

And so any sort of criticism that I might

be delivering to myself,

I feel it could be

amplified by all of those eyes.

Especially now as a mom, I mean, you go

through changes in pregnancy and things.

And I don't look the same

way I did when I was 25.

And rationally, I know, that's okay.

No, that's okay.

But getting out there and putting

yourself really on display, and

saying, no, this is okay, is a completely

different, and I think

a very validating act.

[MUSIC]

The idea of riding in

front of thousands and

thousands of people is

kind of a little scary.

A lot scary.

Do you wanna plate?

Yeah, do you wanna Coca-Cola?

Coca-Cola, there's

that southern coming out.

[SOUND]

Well, I'm just going

for anything right now.

I think you cheat, I can't

put it out how you do it.

I do not cheat, but I cheat you, but I

cheat my Johnny Mac.

Oh, no.

I don't know.

You didn't carry a bouquet.

Here's the big wedding photograph.

This isn't a big one, though.

We got married back in

What year was that, John?

I think it's often difficult for black

people to kind of let their hair down.

The fact that you can be singled out

because you're black

is just kind of always

something that you carry with you.

And especially black men,

that black men carry with them.

So why do you wanna do it?

You know, every now and then

I just like to shake it up.

[LAUGH]

And it's, you know, I've

been to several of the parades.

Everybody that's on the bike

looks like they're having fun.

Just watching the faces of the people

standing in the crowd,

you can just tell that

they're just elated, too.

I like being just a

little notorious, you know,

and this sounds like a way that I can be

notorious, you know,

without getting into big trouble.

And so if it's a sunny, warm day, I'll

pretend that this is

what I would look like.

But what I really, really

fear of here is a cold day,

and instead I'm gonna

come across like that,

which is not what I

want to happen on that day.

It's shrinkage.

It's bad.

[MUSIC]

I've been thinking about what's at stake

for me if I were to

ride naked in the fair.

And for me, it's not really that there's

something that I could lose or damage.

It's actually more of the opposite.

I had a very hard year,

2010, and the biggest thing was,

"God, shit, I really don't want to cry."

My dad died very

suddenly on November 30th.

We always knew he would die fast because

he's always in airplanes,

so I kind of always expected

him to die in a plane crash,

but he had a heart attack.

And it's just torn a hole that is gonna

take a while, I think, to heal up,

even though it feels

like it's starting to heal.

I mean, it's been four months, and this

is the first time I've cried about it,

and probably two, so that's pretty good.

But I just want to have fun.

I mean, I have this life motto with my

best friend, and that is,

"Nothing that sucks."

So I built this.

[MUSIC]

I don't do anything that sucks.

I don't eat anything that sucks.

I don't drink anything, say anything,

hang out with people who suck.

I just try to keep it good.

And that's the first time in my life I

feel and have felt like an empty bucket.

I just feel like

someone pulled the cork out,

and all the joy in my

heart just rushed away.

And I went back, and I think there are a

number of things that I've done

to try to fill that bucket back up,

but riding a bike naked in a parade

really, really sounds good to me.

I come just a little bit like

individually, like this.

I got my pilot's license

just before I turned 60,

and I'm very active in the 99s, which are

the lady pilots that

Amelia Earhart started in 1929.

What keeps me young is

not thinking about it much.

And as long as I'm very physical, I'm

able to just think

that I'm 28 in my head.

And, you know, you

stop counting birthdays.

But it's kind of fun after

a while to think about it.

being in nude bicycle parades

and putting black flamingos on their car.

I think it's great.

And I'll probably be doing

this until the day I die.

crowd looked at him and

he was painted poorly.

He had a little, you know, red and white.

But on the end of his

cock, he had a heart painted.

So this lady thinks she

goes, oh, look at that.

He's got a heart on.

And then she went

Oh no!

With a hard on?

But I don't remember having a hard on.

But it'll be interesting to know.

morning, the parade,

we leave like a night.

For me, like a little paint

on, I just like, I don't care.

I'm there to watch

people, to see it for the high.

My artist suggested that he wants me

clean shaven or clean in my private area.

I'm like, well, that's funny.

So is that official?

You're going to get your balls waxed?

I think more than my balls, and I've

never, it's been, I don't

know, how many, 50 years?

It's like not had hair down below.

Wow.

Wow, you're going to feel the breeze.

Can you tell us

This is mundane, but can

you tell us about the weather?

Is it going to be cold?

What's typically--

You know, don't worry about that.

Don't know--

It's not uncomfortably cold.

No.

No, it's not because you're so high.

You're so high from the engine.

And then once you start to bike, you're

using energy, you know,

and you're so distracted

Well, I'm still concerned about the cold,

because you know how cold steel can get.

[LAUGHTER]

There are all kinds of sort of things

going through my head

about, OK, you know, well,

I have to be perfect.

I can't have any cellulite.

I have to, you know, like I've got to

make sure it's a cold day,

you know, so everything's

standing up properly.

Make sure that this happens, and we're

going to control for that.

And then if everything's perfect, then

I'm allowed to have fun.

And then I can relax and enjoy it.

Are you excited you might be in a parade?

Yeah, I'm excited for the parade.

Yeah.

Well, you know what?

This is actually a really funny parade,

because all the people

riding on the bikes in the

parade are naked.

Isn't that silly?

Yeah.

Why do you think they want to do that?

Because they want to be cold.

Because they want to be cold.

Well, they might be.

They might be pretty cold.

You know what my binoculars are?

What do you think if mommy rides a bike,

and I don't wear any clothes?

What would you think of that?

Well, are only grown-ups

allowed to be in the parade?

That's a good question.

I think that some kids have

ridden in the parade before.

So what about if we painted

your costume on your body?

No, I'm a real costume.

This is what I want to be

dressed like in a parade.

Uh-huh. I'm still thirsty.

So we're going to get on our bikes, and

you can wear what you want to wear.

And I'm going to not wear

what I don't want to wear.

And I'll put my body

paint on or my costume.

And then we'll get on our bikes, and

we'll wait at the

starting line with all the other

bikers.

And then when they say go, all the bikers

start driving on their

bikes down the street.

Where?

This is one of my favorite

places to be on the water.

And it's actually what keeps me in

Seattle is this boat and

the summer solstice parade.

My first year, I couldn't find the party.

So I was like, I got there really late

and had to get my paint on quick.

It was overwhelming.

There was just all these nude people,

everything from totally

elaborate, costumed and done

to people just getting there and taking

off their clothes, which,

by the way, is the hardest

part of the whole experience, is those

first few moments when

you strip down in the room

in front of all these people.

And you know the eyes are on you, and

you're totally exposed and

vulnerable in that moment.

As soon as the paint starts going on, you

feel a little better.

You feel like you're getting your clothes

back on because the

paint literally does feel

like clothing.

The third year rolled around, and we were

all wondering, where's

the paint party going

to happen?

Nobody was stepping forward.

So I basically appointed myself the

leader and took a hold

where nobody else seemed to

want to or had the time.

[bell rings]

I know in the past this has been an

anarchist group, but we're

growing so big now that we

have to think about

things a little differently.

Thinking that we could have seven to nine

hundred people show

up this year, we can't

just go anywhere.

That's a big group.

I mean, this is what

happened to Burning Man.

So I started looking for different

places, and the thing

about the bigger space, there's

a lot of benefits to it.

One is that it's plenty of room.

I mean, it could hold everybody.

The challenge of it is, is that it's

going to probably cost around 2K.

So we could use this space for both the

painting party and the

evening party and charge for

both events and have paid positions for

people that want to help.

Like, if you put in enough

hours, you make something.

Well, then you get arguments over who

gets the paid positions.

Right now, it's the traditional

anarchistic thing of

whoever's willing to do the work

and express the

opinions with the leaders.

But then I don't want paid

positions for managing the group.

I also sort of prefer to open it up for

discussion, and not just us three

deciding, but open up

for discussion on the group.

Would you rather have a place indoors

that you've got to pay ten dollars for or

camp out in the cold?

[bell ringing]

Bicycling is a lot of fun, good exercise,

and a fine means of transportation.

[music]

A bicycle safety manual may be obtained

from either your local safety

council or police department.

It tells of all the things you should

know about bike

riding. Study it carefully.

Here's the seat adjustment.

The seat should be adjusted so that with

your feet on the pedal, your

knee will have a slight bend.

It's way not the right height.

Like, what's the rule?

If your knees are hitting your knockers,

definitely raise the seat.

[laughing]

For easier and safer riding, tires should

be inflated to the recommended pressure.

I'm just making steady progress here.

Even a short trip to the store for mom

can be dangerous if you don't keep your

mind on your riding.

Don't be a clown or a

show-off on your bike.

Watch out, world.

Riding two on a bike is double trouble.

Remember, take care of your bike so that

it can take care of you.

[whistling]

Bike abuse. That's a terrible thing.

[laughing]

Yeah, it looks like

it's been better days here.

Yeah. That sort of forgot about...

Everything should be working. It's been

sitting outside for the last ten years.

Well, everyone wants to hear the story.

Yeah, everyone wants to hear the story

about riding in the

solstice parade naked.

I usually tell them just to meet us and

take off their clothes,

and then they can tell

the story themselves. Yeah.

Originally, it was a

pretty innocent thing.

It wasn't to be a political movement.

Just a couple of guys

doing something wacky.

Maybe a little bath and some lubricant.

Ready to go. Yeah.

I think you should do it.

I think the ride wouldn't be the same

without you in front of it this year.

Let's see. It's probably been 12 years

since I've done the parade.

Yeah. I think I've aged a

little better than the bike.

I mean, I don't know. I think there's

some things to consider.

Doing something as vulnerable as this in

front of such a wide audience is really

pushing me out of my comfort zone and

basically forcing me.

I feel like it pushes about anybody out

of their comfort zone.

Well, absolutely.

Yeah, but it's kind of forcing me to shut

up this voice in my head that's saying,

"You're not good enough. You're not doing

this right. You're not

okay. That's the way you are."

So you think that after you finish the

Solstice Parade ride,

that voice will cease?

Well, I think, you know, my opinion about

nudity is pretty liberal.

You know, I mean, if someone's walking

down the street naked, I might think,

"Ooh, that's probably not a good idea,"

because some people will really object.

And I think the law is saying you're not supposed to go...

But is the only reason it's a bad idea

because some people object to it?

Fundamentally, is it

something to be ashamed of?

No. But society has a lot of rules about

stuff. Some of it's valid, some of it's

not, and some of it's

really open to opinion.

The main thing is don't break the laws,

right? What's your name again?

Dan. You don't get to break the laws.

I guess getting arrested was never a

worry of mine at the time. When I started

wanting to ride in 96, maybe, or 97,

there wasn't anybody to

get in touch with about it.

And if you wanted to do it, you just went

down and were there on your bike naked.

So I was with a small-ish group,

certainly no more than

20, maybe more like a dozen.

Totally not a sanctioned part of the

parade, no coordination

with the Fremont Arts Council.

Right.

And so I think we came down Third...

Third, okay.

...in...down here into Fremont.

And up ahead, you can see, "Oh, that's

what we did. We

stripped at the gas station."

Okay.

And then we got to Third and Leary and

got all our stuff into

our bike bags or whatever.

I bet they're still talking

about that at the gas station.

So you come along the whole way, and I

see up ahead there are some police

officers, and one cop just

sort of steps out in front of me.

Wow.

It was pretty clear that I was to get off

my bike, and then he

brought me out of the street.

I was standing...I was

somewhere right around here.

There's a picture of me with my hands

behind my back and the

caption underneath it says,

"Seattle police enforcing Mark Sidran's

new cross-dressing ordinance."

And then they lead me away into a holding

cell, and they lock me

up, and they're like...

And then one guy comes in and he says,

"Well, you know, they don't process

people downtown until Monday, so you're

going to be in for at least two nights."

Oh, God.

And I'm like...I was scared. I mean,

like, heart-beating fast and left alone,

and the holding cell was cold.

I think I actually cried. I think there

were moments I was there

for about an hour total,

and there were plenty of time where they

just left me there

alone with my thoughts.

And then finally somebody, another cop

comes and is like, "We decided we're

going to let you go."

I was never charged with anything, so

there's never any permanent record, but I

have seen the inside of a holding cell.

I was on jury duty one time, and they're

interviewing all the

jurors and all of these things.

"Have you ever been convicted of a crime?

Have you ever been arrested?"

"I raised my hand, and they asked me to

elaborate. What were you arrested for?"

"I was arrested for bicycling naked in

the Fremont Solstice Parade."

And the juror behind me leans in, we're

sitting on these benches in the

courtroom, he leans in behind me and he

says, "You're my hero."

Good evening, everyone.

They say the truth hurts.

Tonight, the Naked Truth could cost

Fremont one of its

most popular traditions.

We're talking, of course, about the

Solstice Parade, which is supposed to be

a celebration of summer.

But tonight it's become a battlefield

over self-expression.

Here are their teens, Lisa Myers.

Well, this bad publicity,

just please go away, thank you.

Can we get anything else talked about on

our fair besides naked

bodies going down the street?

I mean, this was meant to be a very

everybody-friendly parade, and the

streakers were a problem.

We even had some flashers,

and they were really a problem.

And then we had the police who got phone

calls and got told they had to do

something about this.

Don't block the intersection, sir.

The city wanted us to put up signage that

said that it would allow the police to

arrest people during the parade.

I'm kind of unaware of all the

controversy, except that being naked in

public could get you arrested.

They wanted the Arts Council or the

parade people to participate in stopping

the cyclists or reporting them so they

would become arrested.

Last year's Solstice Parade, two men were

arrested for riding

their bikes in the nude.

So there were a lot of parade watches

this year who were waiting to see nude

bikers wearing handcuffs

and not a whole lot else.

By that point, the bikers were becoming a

little bit of an

annoyance to the parade, actually.

But we still didn't want to capitulate to

the police and have any

arresting of nude people.

Is it really illegal just to be naked in

public where people can see you?

Are we that strict and repressed as

society that we consider nakedness in and

of itself to be somehow wrong?

When it finally came down to the crucial

time, the threat of being arrested pretty

much disappeared along

with the bikers' clothes.

You're going to get arrested for that?

Actually, no. They're not.

We never had any problem.

And I don't want any problem.

I guess the official policy of Seattle

might be, you know, grin and bear it.

Afternoon, officers. I understand the

department is going to sponsor a naked

motorcycle ride as well in

this parade. Is this true?

If that was up, would you guys be game to

that for the good people of Seattle?

Not me.

How about you, sir? Officer Adcliffe?

Part of the expectation when one goes to

see the Fremont Salsas Parade that

there'll be the naked bicyclists.

For all I know, they may attract as many

people as anybody else for

wanting to go see the parade.

And that may chafe some at the Arts

Council, who, you know, that may not be

their vision of the parade.

But that is everyone else's vision, and

that attracts tens of

thousands of people.

A lot of people seem to actually be

coming because of the

naked cyclists for the parade.

I think that is a press perception that

is really, really antiquated.

How about those bicycle riders?

It's the best part.

normal track and basically expose

Do you think it takes a lot of courage to

ride naked on a bike in

front of 100,000 people?

No, not if you're an idiot.

So do you really think that the people

who do this are idiots?

Yeah, I really do.

Any message for the naked cyclists?

Go find something more interesting to do.

We have such short

period of time on Earth.

I think it's our obligation to experience

all the possibilities

that life has to offer.

But am I ready to be out there painted

physically in the body I own today?

I don't want people to be

put off by what I look like.

I just have been casting about trying to

get my head around changing it.

I mean, we all know that the perfect

woman's body is, you know, very slim.

And most of the people in the parade are,

but not all of them.

I know that I can lose 25 pounds between

now and then, and I know I can.

So that's what I'm planning on doing.

When I look in the mirror, I see a

completely different body.

Like the one I see in pictures, I'm like,

"Oh, hey, that's not so bad."

Like I could have run farther, I could

have done an extra yoga class.

I feel like I have this secret, and that

is what I look like naked.

As though what I look like naked wouldn't

compute with what I

look like in clothing.

Maybe I'll just do this whenever I'm

comfortable with a naked.

That's a really interesting way to put it

It's important for us to

And just recognizing that you think it

I've painted people a few times.

This is my little workspace.

So tell me what you have in mind.

Well, of course, you

know, you're the artist.

So, you know, if this doesn't

fit your ideas, that's fine.

That's an important part

of my job as a tattooer,

to help people finalize ideas and come up

with a decision about a design

or motif that's going to last

them the rest of their life.

So how do you do it?

Do you paint me with a paintbrush or...?

Well, probably mix up some pigments in a

dish, some white and some red.

Here's what I think I'd like to do.

I'd like to get a big,

orangish plume and come out here.

We can go orange and pink together.

Yeah.

Nobody says we can't.

Yeah.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

All right.

I like the idea of going with a lot of

pink and maybe a bit of coral

to make the feather

patterns, but I like the pink theme.

Can we put glitter on somewhere?

Probably.

So it's just the hat and the body paint?

Yeah.

And the bicycle.

I wanted to hide myself

first about, you know,

because doing this is just a little quite

embarrassing feeling at first.

But I'm becoming more

comfortable with the idea that...

Everyone's going to know what's you.

They're going to know who it is,

especially if I look like a flamingo.

Anyone who knows you is

going to know it's you.

Yeah.

I think it's around the corner.

I want to capture the

elegant vibrancy of her life,

you know, her livingness, but also the

suggestion of death,

of her fragile beauty.

If you want to express certain basic

human qualities like pathos

or joy or the kind of majestic gravitas

that comes with death,

then you have to paint the nude.

We have an event here once a month that

is called the Little Red Studio.

[MUSIC]

Folks often go to and enjoy seeing

something like the Cirque du Soleil,

where the nudes or the nearly nude are

idealized beauties, both male and female.

At Little Red Studio, while there's

certainly some of that,

a lot of the folks that

perform or come and get involved

are less than

idealized forms, should we say.

So it's perfect for

experiments and experiences,

like somebody deciding they want to be

naked in an environment that is safe,

safe from judgment, at least, and

allowing people to paint on them.

I'm certain that a big part of the body

painting that we do here

is a ruse for people

to have something to do

while they're experiencing

their own private freak show.

Like here's the freak of

a real human being naked

that they want to look at and are afraid

to look at at the same time.

And all kinds of fears, like, is that

really what I look like?

Does my butt really hang like that?

Do my boobs really look like that?

There's all this internal sort of

comparing and contrasting,

but yet there's the playful veneer of,

oh, we're just dubbing paint on

and it gives them something to rest on.

And I think in the

end, the playful activity

and the spirit of community carries them

through those fears.

So do you have specific ideas?

Yeah, I do.

I know you as a gardener.

And I love painting plants anyway.

There's one plant, and it's

bergmansia, angel's trumpet.

There's a much better floating herb.

Oh, I know the plant.

One of the things that's exciting to me

about this is that while

we do body painting, almost,

it seems like every week here, where

people are just kind of experiencing

painting on the body for the first time.

So it has a kind of

kindergarten-like quality about it.

But there's an opportunity here in

working with you for the parade to do

something of a different order of

magnitude and artistic merit.

You're going to be pretty

much a walking piece of art.

At least that's my intention.

I started fire

dancing about 13 years ago.

And once I learned how to fire dance, I

realized there was

this option to dress up.

So this collection is 13 years worth of

costumes that you've accumulated?

Mm-hmm. It is.

So in less than a month, I'm going to be

riding a bike for the first time in the

Fremont Solstice Parade.

And I've been having sort of creative

dilemmas about how exactly I want to

portray myself on the bike ride.

And nothing else?

And nothing else. Yeah.

I know there are people that just jump on

a bike and go, and there are people who

go all out and do head-to-toe body paint.

I've been thinking of a couple of

different options that are maybe

somewhere in between.

I'm still interested in the idea of body

paint, but the reason that I like it is

because it could be beautiful and it

could be expressive.

But there's also a part of me that is

thinking of maybe doing some other kind

of minimal decoration or something else

that's interesting but

not necessarily paint.

I don't know. It doesn't really resonate

with me as far as just, "Okay, I put some

color on my skin and now

I'm ready to ride my bike."

I actually have an idea for you. It's

actually really

beautiful. I'm going to show you.

There's this product. And you can put

this all over your body, and it's great

because it goes on really fine.

And you can still see your skin tone

through it. I don't know. It

just... Your skin comes through.

Yeah, you see the beauty of the skin.

So I would love to help you, but part of

what I love to do is

really help people look sexy.

And there's a lot of people who are in

the parade who kind of

take a funny edge to it.

Are you going to feel comfortable being

sexy and being sensual? Is that something

that... How does that feel to you?

Well, there's a part of me that was

inclined to sort of hide

behind the paint like everyone else.

I had a really dark winter, and I wasn't

feeling very good about myself.

And my inner judge and my inner critic,

as well as some external criticism around

me, was just really, really loud in my

ears to the point that I just couldn't

really see the things about

me anymore that were awesome.

It would be a bolder statement for me to

really go all out and adorn myself and

just do something with a phenomenal

costume and step out of the mold a little

bit as far as the usual paint goes.

But I think it's a go big or go home

situation. I think that it's something

that... I think I would feel

bare if it were just my body.

Definitely get naked. Go big or go home.

Exactly. For the first time. In front of

a hundred thousand people.

we're told that they have those, those

that's what your towel's for or lay on

your tummy for a while.

Maybe think about basketball or whatever

boys think about when they

need to not be thinking about it.

That was one of my biggest fears in doing

the bike ride is like, okay,

it's going to be cold.

I'll be shrinkage.

And if it's, if I look at the right

person, there might not be shrinkage.

You get people in a, in a much happier

frame of mind when they're naked.

Yeah.

I mean, if you're a jerk with your

clothes on, you're going

to be a jerk naked too.

I mean, come on.

I think for me, the reason I like being a

nudist is, you know,

society tells women that

you should look like this.

You've got to look like this or you

really should feel bad about yourself and

go sit in a hole somewhere.

And so you got all these women walking

around feeling like crap.

And I come up here and

with what I look like.

I have put 40 hours into this event so

and comments but they're

not willing to step

forward and do the work.

is that I'm going to have River with me.

really excited about it.

thinking about it now,

and he didn't get to ride in the parade.

He'd be really upset.

I think this is one of

the best Seattle traditions

because it's beautiful that we celebrate

the sun even when it's not out.

It really just feels like

we're all kind of old friends

just getting together to do something

that's a little bit crazy

but is going to be fun.

I thought it was going

to be a lot creepier.

I guess I'm just not

used to Seattle culture.

I called him The Bob when

I wasn't calling him dad.

He always got to kick out of it.

Right now we're about to

see some nudie cyclists.

Some what?

Well they're not.

They're actually not nudists.

They are artistically painted.

We feel super excited about it.

I checked the website

and looked some pictures.

Super excited.

People naked.

I don't like seeing people naked.

It appears that there's going to be some

naked bicycling going

on here in Fremont today.

There's going to be a lot

of people all over the place.

That gentleman right there, he's got a

little bit of clothes on.

I'm amazed at how big

this thing's gotten.

Yeah, and he's turning all this.

That's what they say.

One night we were having a few beers,

maybe a little smoke.

I don't know, 15, 16

people there that night.

Some of the students mentioned that

wouldn't it be great if we maybe would

streak in the solstice parade.

Somebody else said, "Well,

we're mountain bike riders.

We should ride our bikes in the parade."

And then somehow those two things merged.

Well maybe we should

ride our bikes naked.

Everybody said they were going to do it.

The next day, Gabe and I are the only

ones that met at the specified time.

All kinds of thoughts are

going through your head.

Should we really do this?

What's going to happen when we do this?

We just looked at each other and we said,

"Let's do it. Let's ride."

They're leaving, they're

leaving, they're leaving.

Let's go, let's go, folks.

This is the first ever Naked Cyclist.

We are at the Fremont Solstice Parade.

The best, most amazing, and most unique

parade in the whole world.

Everything is human

powered and beautiful.

And here come the Cyclists.

[Music]

In my experience at this parade, the cold

weather makes the women look

better and the men look worse.

[Music]

Well, two years ago, I was at the parade

with a friend of mine

and I saw her go by.

She was wearing a, she was naked Elvis.

She was like, Elvis from Vegas, you know,

with the capes and the

jewels and everything.

And I thought it was the most amazing

costume and we met like a month later.

And that was two years ago.

You met her out here.

I met her here, yeah.

Riding naked?

Well, I saw her for the

first time riding naked, yeah.

So you saw her riding naked?

Yeah.

And what did she look like?

She was, she was Elvis.

But did she look hot?

Oh, yeah. Of course.

She looked great.

But it was the costume that was amazing.

My face hurts from smiling.

Nakedness is a natural

thing. It's how we're all born.

And for some reason it

was taken away from us.

But some people are

willing to go beyond that.

We decided what team do we most admire.

Aaron well there is only one Seattle team

so we're going as Storm

and that's why we

added the feminine touch.

I've got a new concept going of

cross-dressing nudists.

If you can convince somebody, you're a

woman, when you're naked,

that's sort of the ultimate

cross-dressing experience now, isn't it?

How you gonna do all that?

This is nothing like this.

Nothing like this in the world.

We need one butt there, one butt here,

and the third butt right

in the middle facing me.

I mean, what do you want to do? Look

around at your life and

when you're older and go,

"Wow, what did I do? My time's short, so

I am doing everything I

can that I want to do."

It was so joyful and it's all stuffed

right here. Pure fucking joy.

It certainly taught me to be way more

suspicious of my fears.

This has probably just been about the

best day of my life.

I think everyone's got something

different to express.

You could ask every single rider in that

parade what their reason is for riding

and they're going to

give you a different answer.

I think it's a

manifestation of my own personal power.

Honestly, this is a silly misbehavior.

It's just something that I can say I did.

One thing to cross off the list, I guess.
