I was in season two of Lego Masters.

I really like to build
one-to-one scale.

And I was on season one.

I was thinking about doing, like,
what we drew.

Like, showcase dragons.

I like building things that are,
like, so colourful and crazy.

This is our fabulous
fairy wonderland.

I also brought home the trophy
for the holiday special

and I think that we've got
a really good shot

at bringing home
the Australian trophy.

ancient Olympics in Greece

thousands of years ago

and the first ancient Lego Masters
in Denmark thousands of years ago...

the spirit of teamwork, drive,

discipline, athleticism, sacrifice,

all in the ultimate pursuit of glory.

Yes, the Olympics and Lego Masters

have a very, very long history
together

and you cannot deny
that they've always been intertwined.

You all have incredible skill,
incredible passion,

and it's our job
to draw that out of you.

I was honestly so overwhelmed.

I've never seen so many bricks
in my life.

I think it's a bit bigger

it blew our minds.

Some of them are specimens coming
in, with their muscles hanging out.

Everyone thinks Australia in general

is not up there
with the rest of the world.

Well, we are.

I'm Dianne.
And I'm Shane.

And we're a mother-and-son team
from WA.

Why is his hair so grey?

My love for Lego started
when Shane was very little.

SHANE: We moved around a lot
as a family.

One of the big things that we always
brought along with us was Lego.

I don't think there's any other team

that has a combined almost 80 years
of experience...

(LAUGHS)
..building Lego.

So, it's kind of important, I guess,
in the first episode,

to show that we're not gonna be able
to be just walked over.

No.

We're gonna go a little bit crazy.

So we're gonna build a flower that
blooms as it comes out of the ice.

And then, for a little bit of fun,

we're gonna put
a little spinning bee on top.

This one's an engineering challenge

because it needs to be strong enough
to break through the ice.

Like, for me,
it's gonna be pretty technical.

I've got two mechanisms
that are gonna work in the build.

But as the flower comes up
and pierces through,

the petals will open and then there
will be a little moving surprise.

And it's us blooming.

(BOTH LAUGH)

the world that we're gonna bloom

all the way to the end
and take that cup home.

To be the all-female team
for Australia

is quite a lot of pressure.

Like, I've been able to represent
Australia before

but not at this scale.

I'm Haley and a current reigning
beauty queen here in Australia.

Miss Australia International.

Being a beauty queen has allowed me
to connect my passion for Lego.

Definitely take my inspiration from
being outside and being in nature

and being able to build that
into Lego

is something that is truly amazing.

My name is Charlie.

I'm a master model builder

at Legoland Discovery Centre
in Melbourne.

(TRAM BELL DINGS)

And I'm the first female
master model builder

in the Southern Hemisphere.

As a master model builder,

our job is to build upon

and maintain
all sorts of different builds.

I love my job so much.

Like, any and every piece
that you could ever need,

I can make anything I want.

Nothing is impossible.

This is by far the hardest first
challenge in a Lego Masters series.

Definitely.
By far.

We have to not only make something
that looks good

but it's structurally sound.

So, our idea is to do a big volcano

with a monster coming out of it,
like a Marvel monster.

We're kind of pulling a bit of
inspiration from a bit of 'Moana'.

So there's gonna be...

looking for different things -
very different.

Nothing makes you appreciate
your own brick pit

as going into another one.

a little mini Olympics already.

I'm incredibly impressed by how much
athleticism the Germans have.

That's probably why they came in
in activewear.

FELIX: So, that's every plant

This is the fastest I can do.

Yeah, we won Lego Masters Germany

but I think Lego Masters Australia
is totally different.

It's more challenging.

It's the best version
of Lego Masters in the world.

To be the first ever winners
that wins, like, a second time,

it would be crazy.

We make the decision
to make a dragon and a castle,

a big dragon who's breathing fire
to break through the ice.

In the first viewing,
you only see the castle.

Like, you think, like,
"Mmm, only a castle."

And then, when it comes up, you see
the dragon and everything around it

and then the whole story
makes sense.

I would say
our story's really clear,

like, the dragon, the castle
and fire and break the ice or...

to attack a Viking settlement.

Versing the world, but the world's

Seeing what's going on over there,

with the rockets and everything
coming together,

you can tell they've done it before,

and support the rocket.

for so long

which is just incredible.

And I've introduced him to the weird
and wonderful world that is Lego.

I'm a brick artist.

I create digital artwork
out of Lego bricks.

As you can see,
I am hearing-impaired

but this really has no impact at all
on how I put Lego together.

I mean, I don't need to hear bricks.
I just need to see them.

The style I'm gonna be bringing
is hyper colour -

very pop, very bright
and really fun to look at.

EMILIO: Today, we're building
a sea monster,

which is coming out of the water,
breaking the ice.

He has just started to capture
this poor little kayaker

who's on a fishing trip

and they've just been scooped up
by him as he comes out of the ice.

I'm trying to make this
incredibly sturdy

so it's got enough force
to punch through that sheet.

Because it's sort of like about,
you know, having an icebreaking...

And then there are other things
that don't have to be as strong.

I guess it's like real life,
you know.

out of all of our ideas.

The story wasn't so logical.

But we just love our idea,

so we improved our story.

We decided to turn our pencil
into a deep-sea diving pencil

who is searching for her treasure,
a sharpener and her rubber.

It really speaks to the universal
story of every pencil...

when we have some kind of boundaries

and then make something crazy.

inspiring other people and showing
people that you could be creative.

at the top I think is fantastic.

something pop its way through.

What spoke to you
when you picked that element up?

It's one solid piece.

It's relatively light.

What you needed to do
is camouflage them a little bit

and find a way to maybe turn them
into those petals a little bit more.

some more work around the flower.

But for a first build,

to put the serpent together.

think about, for future builds,

the layout and the composition
of your build.

For example, say,
you've got the village

and the trees here at the front.

All of that stuff you've done around
the wave and the tail,

we can't see it

'cause you built the village
and everything in front of it,

so just think about your staging
and composition for a little bit.

that you have in the television,

so I'm gonna give you a good tick
on technical.

And in Australia,
the fairies spin the opposite way,

which must be a bit weird
for you guys.

The story
is really an interesting one.

I can't get the why it's coming up
out of the ice and the water.

If this was just a build on its own,

I can picture it clearer
and more obvious.

You've explained it to me,

that you were making a pencil,

It's a great responsibility

Our scuba-diving pencil.
He has made it to the surface.

We made Cecile,
the deep-sea diving pencil...

and she's scuba-diving under the sea

and looking for her treasure,

her rubber and a sharpener

in a treasure chest.

When you first explained to me
that you were making a pencil...

I was, like, "OK.
Uh, hmm, this is interesting.

"OK, we've got a lot of..."
"Let's see where it goes."

"We've gotta see where it goes."

And so, basically, we did and I
found myself warming to the story.

I found myself starting to go, "Oh!"

And then, when you gave it a name

and you started explaining
the persona, you know,

when you told me, like,
"Oh, you know, he's going down there

"to rescue the pencil sharpener,"
I'm, like, "Oh, awesome.

"I'm really going for this guy."

The fact that you went
really bright, crazy colours

worked in your favour.

That's a big tick.

In terms of technical ability,

you obviously made the pencil
strong enough

to be able to withstand the impact
and that was your first thought.

You listened to the brief.

You said, "Hmm, what is it that this
has to do, first and foremost?"

And that is survive getting through
the ice. So I was a big fan of that.

I've gotta say, where I was
to where I am now, it's awesome.

is about a big dragon

who's wrapped around a castle
and protecting its egg,

hidden in a cave
underneath the castle.

ANNELENA: And the dragon
was breathing fire

to break through the ice.

So the ice melts,
making a waterfall and a river

and then the dragon just crushes
one tower down

and it falls into the river.

Unreal.

Being able to grab our attention

with something really bright,
colourful or intriguing,

which is what the red dragon is,

then hold our attention
with fine detail...

and the castle and the surrounds
and things did exactly that.

This is outstanding.

Managed to do that, thank goodness.

That's always
the nervous, uncontrollable bit.

I also like the technique
that you did with the rockwork,

using all the different slopes
that Lego have.

I think that was really cool.

However, on the downside to that...

it just took so much time.

Yeah.

It was like you guys were non-stop
making basically the volcano

for the best part of ten hours.

Yeah.

And so, you really needed to get
some more time into the character,

which is the hero
that's coming out of it.

The eyes, I would've loved to have
seen the eyes light up

a different colour -
something like that.

This is a very straight-up-and-down
build.

Definitely disappointed 'cause
we know we can do so much more.

Those internationals
have definitely brought it.

But we're learning.
We'll get there.
