introduced Indiana
Jones to the world.

The audience screams
and goes crazy.

Harrison Ford had
taken a gun to a knife fight

and came out smelling of roses.

Yes, you're
a man of many talents.

Harrison
Ford had a launchpad

and promptly jumped
into the future.

I'm Deckard, Blade Runner.

Only to go backwards.

People didn't
really understand it.

You people wouldn't believe.

Not
merely futuristic,

"Blade Runner" proved
to be ahead of its time,

ahead of the critics, and
ahead of its audience.

Sort of bombed.

I was devastated.

Embarrassing.

George
Lucas's next project

was to span a decade...

He wasn't gonna do
anything for 10 years.

...of sweet nothing.

What the...?

Lucas was shutting down.

He asked me to shut
the production office
down, which I did.

What am I doing here?

He says, "We're doing nothing."

I have a very bad
feeling about this.

Much
like "Star Wars,"

George conceived "Indiana
Jones" as a trilogy.

We know there's going to be
three "Indiana Jones" pictures

'cause George has said that.

But was Harrison
Ford on the same page?

Harrison has some questions.

Having
shut down Lucasfilm

for the foreseeable future...

It's hard when part
of the team leaves.

Of course it is.

Next
"Indiana Jones" film

would have to find a new home.

We think we can handle
anything, don't we?

And a new voice.

Let me die.

It became a controversy.

But was Indy still
speaking the same language?

Exhibitors are calling saying,

"Kids are peeing
in their seats."

Following
the explosion

of a bomb called "Blade Runner,"

Harrison Ford's career appeared
to suffer collateral damage.

I said, "If you
had three words,

how would you describe your
experience on 'Blade Runner'?"

And Harrison Ford
said, "A total bitch."

While Harrison was
dying at the box office...

Finish.

Steven
Spielberg's career

also had a brush with death.

All
three were killed

when a helicopter crashed,
knocked out of control by debris

from a special
effects explosion.

John Landis
was sued

over the "Twilight
Zone" accident.

Kick the can.

And
Spielberg's contribution

to the same movie was panned.

Oh my God.

George Lucas's
problems were more offscreen

and definitely off script.

They were always
around together.

So I guess when the news broke,

everybody was
pretty sad about it.

Marcia and George
had told stories together.

Someone who loves you.

All the while
writing their own fairy tales.

They were madly in
love with each other.

They were a team.

They were a pair.

Big surprise.

Now the
story was ending.

I think he told people
that I had an affair.

It wasn't true.

When I left George,
he was very angry.

He didn't want this
separation or the divorce,

and he never much validated
anything I ever did.

That's all I'm gonna
say about George

'cause he is a
brilliant film director.

He's wonderful.

But the bond
between George Lucas

and Steven Spielberg
seemed as unshakable

as it was lucrative.

They understood each other.

They understood the
challenges of everything

from story to production.

No friction whatsoever.

Once you direct a movie

and somebody else directs a
movie, there's an instant bond.

But it is so hard to do.

So hard,
Lucas now preferred

not to sit in the
director's chair.

George, more so
when he was younger,

he was very shy and
he found it hard

to talk to actors and so forth.

Almost an introvert,

doesn't like to
communicate with people,

even the people
who work for him.

George is more cerebral,

and Steven has a
very intuitive sense.

And I think
they get along well

because they're opposites.

In Spielberg,
Lucas had an ally

to embody the director he
no longer wanted to be.

They both completely can
make an audience come to them.

Producing
the picture

that would bring in the next
audience now fell to Steven.

With Lucasfilm in hibernation,

Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment

took the reins for
Indy's next adventure.

Our small company,
we weren't Paramount,

we weren't Universal, we
were Lucasfilm and Amblin.

Returning executives

included producer Frank
"Dr. Fantasy" Marshall.

Frank had been a
location manager.

And Kathleen
Kennedy, both on the up.

Kathleen had started as a PA.

Kathy was Steven's
assistant on the first one.

And she was so good, Steven
relied on her so much

she then, you know, became
an associate producer.

Kathleen and Frank,
they were a positive duo.

They understood exactly
what was going on.

The story
for the second film

would be very different.

It would have to be,

following the departure of
writer, Lawrence Kasdan.

I think he'd had enough.

But the
screenwriting life

was only getting richer
for another writer

whose career stretched
back all the way

to Lucas's earliest days.

I met George in
film school at USC.

Willard was
one half of a partnership

destined to write for a-listers,

but it all began with a B movie.

You talk too much.

Roger Corman was showing a
rough cut of "Wild Angels."

A friend of mine, he knew Gloria

and she had just returned
from a trip to Europe

and was wearing one of
the first miniskirts

I'd ever seen.

So I fell in love immediately.

Willard and Gloria

would go on to
deliver George a hit.

You'll be hanging on for mercy

when I get this sucker rolling.

Scripting
"American Graffiti."

We were the only writers

he knew
in Hollywood, I think.

But the second
"Indiana Jones" movie

was not moving forward yet.

Decisions were made.

Because it was
moving backwards first.

He didn't want
to do Nazis again.

I don't know, I think they were
bored with that--.

Bored by Nazis too,

the next "Indiana Jones"
would need new villains

to go with its new setting
on a different continent.

Oh,
where are we anyway?

Gloria and I
were art collectors

and we collect a
lot of Indian stuff.

George heard "Indian"
and he said,

"I'd like to set this in India."

He has brought
you here.

It became a prequel.

Set in the '30s
before the first film,

but not for the reasons
you might think.

Because of the films
we love from that era.

We always considered
the golden years.

And George thought
it would be cool

to have 1930s cars instead
of '60s cars.

Spielberg
had an idea

that could not have
been more old Hollywood.

Steven always wanted
to do a dance number.

He wanted to do a musical.

He wanted to do a
nightclub scene.

The golden era feel

called for a new golden girl.

They also wanted the
heroine to be different

than Ravenwood in the first one.

They wanted her to be a
Jean Harlow kind of ditz.

I've told you a million times

not to talk to me when
I'm doing my lashes.

So they made her as obnoxious
and silly as possible.

Wait a second! Indy!

Which they overdid.

This is Willie Scott.

The name continued
an unlikely arms race

that started on "Raiders
of the Lost Ark."

Indiana.

It started because
Indiana was George's dog.

And then Steven said, "Well
I want to name the girl...

Willie, Willie.

"After
my dog, Willie."

So Willard
figured it was his turn.

We had a dog who was
named after a Korean kid

who was in a film
called "Steel Helmet."

I ain't got no
chocolate, Short Round.

It's a short
round of ammunition

that doesn't fire
properly.

And that
canine connection

brought us the character of...

Short Round.

But the script
still had no teeth.

Well yeah, we had no story.

It was just us and George
and Steve sitting by the pool

naming characters
after our dogs,

trying to figure out
what the story meant.

They had an idea, I don't know
if it was George or Steven,

about Indy doing
something good for kids.

He says they stole
their children.

And so we had to work
kids in a Byzantine way

where they were looking
for the Sankara Stones.

So that's what
you've got these slaves

digging for, huh?

Just like George,

Steven was also reeling
from a breakup of his own

between him and music
executive, Kathleen Carey.

Could not have been
easy on those two guys.

They were
ready to push boundaries

like never before.

Maybe if Marcia was there,
it might have been less darker.

But the
presence of children

wasn't going to lighten
the mood for two writers

encouraged to put more
crack in Indy's whip.

At one point it was
"Temple of Death,"

but they decided
that was even worse.

So it was the "Temple of Doom."

So the sequel,
which was actually a prequel...

This
is Indiana Jones.

...needed
to be fresh.

So what are you supposed
to be, a lion tamer?

It was set to
be more classical in parts.

Lighter on one note.

But darker overall.

And yet suitable for
kids on screen and off.

That wasn't so bad, was it?

Not to mention a
rip-roaring action adventure.

We knew Indy had to
be after something.

It's a stone, a sacred stone.

And we knew we
needed the bad guys.

Of course, bad guys.

But believe it or not,

they still hadn't
confirmed their good guy.

Well, the big thing there
was we had to have it done fast

or Harrison wasn't gonna do it.

I suggest you give
me what you owe me,

or anything goes.

From two or three days, we
just wrote the first draft.

But with a script
that was strictly a WIP

and not yet one
with any crack...

Put him down!

Could Harrison
Ford even be convinced

to don the fedora again?

First of all, George made
a terrible tactical error.

George Lucas
decided the way to find out

was to crack the whip himself.

He's not the most polite.

We were at dinner and he
threw down this script

and said, "Here's your
next movie, Harrison."

I think Harrison
was a little upset.

Writers Willard
Huyck and Gloria Katz

had a script their
producers were happy with.

But there was someone else

George and Steven
needed to convince.

He threw down this
script and said,

"Here's your next
movie, Harrison."

They were both very
nervous about Harrison

because, you know,
Harrison's like a real guy.

Meaning,
he was not afraid

to ask uncomfortable questions.

When we wrote the first draft,

we were told that Harrison
has some questions.

Despite
a terse exchange

with George Lucas over dinner...

They didn't wanna lose him.

Harrison
Ford was lined up

- for "The Temple of Doom."
- Stop.

And for
the casting director,

finding the leading lady
meant revisiting a face

she'd admired in past roles.

I had just seen Kate
Capshaw in this movie

called "The Windy City,"

and I thought she
had a lot of spark.

Dear God, there's gotta be

some old fashioned
men out there.

She came in and she was
just utterly delightful.

There's just sun rays
coming out of her.

What Marci
had picked up on

was going to change not
only Spielberg's movie...

Oh, Indy.

But his life.

Steven fell for
her for the role

and for life at that moment.

Just when my career
is starting to pay
off, you come along.

I really saw a spark
there.

Mr. Spielberg, how does
it feel directing a musical?

Well, it feels just swell.

You know, sometimes you do.

And I saw a spark there between
the director and the actor.

Like Lucas,

Steven was in the
middle of a breakup

and it would leave its
mark on the story ahead.

While that casting decision

seemed to be written
in the stars...

I put together an
open call in Los Angeles

for the role of Short Round.

...Marci was looking
to create a new star.

We had been around the
world, quite honestly,

searching for this kid.

We were seeing hundreds of kids.

But I'm looking at the kid

who wasn't coming
that day to audition.

12-year-old
Ke Huy Quan.

I said, "Why don't you
come in and do it also?"

And he's like, "No, I'm fine."

You know, he just, it
wasn't why he was there.

He was there to
support his brother.

And so I talked Ke Huy
Quan into auditioning.

He wasn't nervous, but he
couldn't really read that well.

And so we just started
talking to him.

And in my head I'm going, "Oh
my God, oh my God, oh my God."

He was mischievous.

He started talking to Harrison

and Steven had them do an
improvisation playing cards.

And Harrison is cheating and
putting cards up his sleeve.

You cheat!
Pay money!

- Are you saying that I cheated?
- Yes!

And instinctually, Ke
just knew to call him on it

and be really mad,

and be really forceful
about, "You're a cheater."

Can
you prove I cheated?

Yes, I saw it!

You saw what?

I saw you just
put a hand in there.

The
youngster's improvisation

was so impressive
it had to be good

for more than a mere audition.

The scene ended up
ultimately in the movie.

No mistake!
Mistake?

I'm very little!

You cheat very big!

I think I'm very lucky.

And I'm number
seven in my family.

That's a lucky number.

And for the
dark priest, Mola Ram,

Spielberg and Lucas found
their perfect choice

in Indian actor Amrish Puri.

You don't believe me?

With the "Temple
of Doom" cast coming together,

everything was falling
into place until...

I think we got a big problem.

...Willard received
a call from George Lucas.

He said, "We have trouble.

We're not gonna
be able to shoot in India."

The Indian
authorities objected

to the film's fanciful
depictions of human sacrifice.

Some poor guy barbecued.

And black magic.

Refusing permission to
shoot in the country.

So they shot the movie
in Sri Lanka instead.

And so
production began

in Sri Lanka in April of 1983.

And the heartbreak of
both Steven and George

would immediately leave
its mark on the film.

Could not have been
easy on those two guys.

Willard got to
keep his favorite lines.

My favorite line, which I
will take credit for, was...

You're not eating?

Where she says,
"No, thank you."

I had bugs for lunch.

It was a good line,

but the scene needed
more than gore.

See? Surprise.

And they realized,
and so they said,

"Shoot, we need an insert
of somebody eating the eels."

And they said, "You
wanna do that?"

I went, "Heck, yeah!"

They got Caecilian
worms from a fish shop.

And here I am still
talking about it

decades later.

And the
film's edgier tone

wasn't just on screen, it
carried behind the scenes too.

We got company!

The
mine car stunt...

Indy!

Incredibly complicated.

They finally came out
onto the cliff face,

water shooting out next to them.

Which certainly
looked precarious,

but it was not
when Harrison Ford

really needed to watch his step.

And suddenly
there's the bridge.

And now we're in another
gigantic sequence.

That came
when Steadicam operator,

Garrett Brown, and
Harrison met on a bridge

for an intimate near
death experience.

This is a business
like warfare.

You have a job to do and there
are occasionally hazards.

And on this occasion,

the hazard was about 60
yards of rope, wood, and wire

hanging over a raging river.

There's a famous
gorge that had been used

on "Bridge on the River Kwai."

A sense of history
is not the main reason

the crew found themselves
on the same river.

They picked it partly
because of its proximity

to a giant company
that was building a dam

just up the river.

ILM was back
for "Temple of Doom,"

but a stunt like this went
beyond their bag of tricks.

The engineers from the dam
helped our special effects guys

build the rope bridge,
put the two cables across

that supported it.

When I first saw the thing,

there were spaces
between the boards

as big as the boards themselves.

The
engineers built a bridge

perfect for Spielberg's
high wire set piece,

but not perfect for
his acute vertigo.

Come on!
Let's go!

He was not happy about
being on the bridge.

Real scary.

It's
very bouncy, Steve.

Very bouncy.

There was a lot of
shouting from the sidelines.

Come on!

But the catch was,

which the other guys
didn't know from the dam,

was the special effects guy
had to put exploding bolts

in the wire,

because at some point it
had to break, didn't it?

But exploding bolts

was not what made the
scene so dangerous

for its leading man.

Harrison's weight,

and I'm guessing he might have
weighed 210 at that point.

I weighed, probably accumulated
240 or 50 with the gear.

You know, those
thin looking boards,

it wasn't trivial to either one
of us to run on that bridge.

And it
wasn't a trivial matter

when the scene in the film
came true for Harrison Ford.

Oh, shit.

Not that part.

Something dangerously similar
that wasn't in the script.

Steadicam operator
Garrett Brown

was filming Harrison Ford
standing on a flimsy wire bridge

over a raging river...

I'm amazed I'm still alive.

...when Harrison
Ford's life almost imitated art

as it flashed in front of him.

The board broke, his leg
went down through the gap.

Harrison apparently just
decided to ignore it.

He was acting all the
way down to the crotch

and I was shooting.

You go into a sort of
self-protective mode,

but you're also in the
middle of doing a job.

And that's the shot, Garrett!

As was Harrison.

Until the word "cut" appears,

that might turn out
to be something.

They might use it in the movie.

You know, I could almost
see it on his face.

I'm sure Steven, was
first of all, embarrassed

because Harrison had
said, "Is it safe?"

And Steven had said, "Yes,
it's perfectly safe."

Now, the
director had to prove that

to his leading man.

We watched the heaviest grips
they had jump on the boards

and then kaboom.

We went back to work.

Which meant
they could shoot for show

what nearly happened for real.

Alright, here we go.

And this
time it was controlled.

- Exploding bolts.
- Mostly.

We weren't too sure
when the exploding bolts

- were gonna work.
- Action!

Hang on, lady.
We going for a ride.

Oh!
What are you doing?

But they did perfectly.

And the whole thing fell.

But don't worry.

There wasn't anybody
physically on the bridge.

They were all dummies.

But not
your average dummies,

slightly smarter ones.

You'll notice some
arms and legs moving

of some of the dummies
that are falling.

'Cause they'd made six of
these animatronic dummies.

Harrison
dodged one disaster.

I've got some good news
and I've got some bad news.

But another was
waiting just around the corner.

He hurt himself badly.

He hurt himself to the point
where he was really in pain.

Good news is
Harrison Ford is fine.

A herniated
disc inflicted

during the shooting
of this fight scene

brought shooting to a halt.

And the bad news is,

he needs until August 8th
to get back into shape.

The injury
required surgery in L.A.

For Steven, it's hard.

Everything has to
be rescheduled.

You try to shoot around a
person as long as you can.

But really,

this might've been
a long time coming.

I think a lot of what he did

would've hurt anybody's
back, you know?

It was extremely athletic.

Spielberg
was helped by the fact

Harrison's stunt double...

The double we had for him
was a guy called Vic Armstrong.

...was exactly
what a director needs

a stunt double to be.

The spitting
image of Harrison.

You could shoot a scene with Vic

and you're convinced
it's Harrison.

So it didn't affect us much.

Despite losing
six weeks with Harrison...

Steven braved through it.

That was great,
but my heart stopped.

...and managed to
finish the film.

Principal photography
on "The Temple of Doom"

wrapped in September of 1983.

And for once, Spielberg
wasn't making headlines

for going over budget.

"1941" was a catastrophe
for going over budget.

"Temple of
Doom" was shot on schedule

and on its $28
million price tag.

There was great anticipation
for the second Indy movie.

Great anticipation.

Following the success

of George Lucas's last trilogy,

the global box office

had become a greater
priority for studios.

Japan, very important market.

Huge market for "Star Wars,"

but not such a great market
for "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

It
turned out Paramount

really needed to tip their
hat to Japanese moviegoers.

We learned from
our folks in Japan

that part of the reason
is the moviegoers,

- believe it or not...
- Here.

Didn't want to see
a guy wearing a hat.

So for "Temple of Doom,"

we took his hat off.

But before
going into release,

Paramount discovered
they had problems

simple marketing tricks
alone couldn't fix.

Gloria and I, we got a call
from the head of the studio

and he says, "You've gotta
talk to George and Steve.

I can't talk to them,
they won't talk to me."

The
studio wanted Willard

to convince Spielberg and
Lucas to lighten up, seriously.

Michael Eisner, he says,
"This movie's very dark."

And we said,
"Yes, it was supposed to be."

This wasn't
just a matter of degrees

for the studio.

He said, "They've been
doing some sneak previews,

and I've got exhibitors
are calling saying,

'Kids are peeing
in their seats'."

You know, I passed
that along to them.

George and
Steven's response?

"We'll fix it in post"
without changing a thing.

They didn't particularly care,

but they also said,

"Well John Williams'
music will cover it.

It'll be less gruesome
when the music's in."

It would have to
be truly hypnotizing music

to temper the horror
of a scene like this.

Because after all the
heartbreak behind the scenes...

Could not have been
easy on those two guys.

Even John
Williams can only do so much.

I think "Temple of
Doom" was too down a film.

My general feeling was a down.

This was an issue
that went beyond taste.

It was the last thing
Paramount needed,

just as they hoped to expand
the appeal of the franchise.

Indy was such a popular
character at that point

that little kids couldn't
wait to get into the theater.

And they were faced with
a little bit of heaviness.

That heaviness
was about to weigh

on the entire U.S. film industry

because Harrison Ford
wasn't the only heart throb

in "The Temple of Doom."

The film unwittingly staked
out new theatrical ground.

Let me die.

It became a controversy.

It was so cartoonish

that we didn't think anybody
would take it that seriously.

You dare not do that.

But it
was the censor's job

to take it seriously.

And "The Temple of
Doom" was so dark,

they were lost in the dark

when it came to
what certification
to put on the film.

And after Spielberg went
directly to the MPAA,

the film classification
and rating administration

invented a brand new
rating, the PG-13.

It's the first movie
ever with a PG-13.

And the idea of
parental guidance was born.

It was all thanks to Willard
and Gloria's dark imagination.

It's funny, when
you're writing it,

it's amusing to be
darker and darker.

When you see it, you go,

"Oh my God, it's really
dark."

Fans
waited in line all night

to be the first to see

"Indiana Jones and
the Temple of Doom."

The first reaction to
the film was not good.

It wasn't like "Raiders."

It wasn't as good.

Despite the
blood and the gore...

It wasn't that violent.

It's all in fun, I think.

Or maybe
because of it.

I was really an
exciting experience.

And I plan on seeing it again.

The
eyeballs in the soup

didn't prevent
eyeballs on the movie.

I've already seen it twice.

And this
time, Japanese audiences

seemed to have gotten
over the fedora phobia.

In Japan, the movie did
much, much, much better.

"Indiana Jones
and the Temple of Doom"

grossed $179
million domestically

on a budget of
nearly 28 million.

Yes, we made a lot
of money off of it.

But the
sequel fell short

of the original
film's box office,

not a trend the studio
wanted to see continue.

One to go to
complete the trilogy.

Two down, one to go.

Of course,
that was plan A.

But having taken Harrison
Ford to the edge of darkness,

producers were acutely aware
of the old Hollywood maxim--

You're only as good
as your last picture.

proved to be doomed, with
Jonthe critics at least... om"

Boo.

Harrison Ford
blazed on bearing witness...

It's over, enough!

To a series of films

that were a long way from
action adventure in a fedora.

But there was no question
he was now a leading man.

Melanie Griffith certainly
thought so in "Working Girl."

I wanted an ace
on this, the best.

Mm-hmm.

But a script for
the next "Indiana Jones" movie

was being shaped by writer
Christopher Columbus.

Steven, he wasn't that
into the "Monkey King."

The "Monkey King"

was the working title
of "Indiana Three."

Menno was invited to
pick up the project.

I had been working with Steve

and I did "The Color
Purple" with him.

Menno had an
idea for a new adventure

that recalled "Raiders
of the Lost Ark."

The Ark of the Covenant.

Are you sure?
Pretty sure.

Kind of like
the Christian version.

I had the idea of the Grail

because it was a kind
of sideways move.

The Grail, you ask?

The Holy Grail, Dr. Jones.

The chalice used by Christ
during the Last Supper.

Yep.

Who wouldn't want to
drink from that cup?

George has a big library

and he's
a very knowledgeable guy.

And he also knew the
Nazis got really overexcited

about the Grail and
the Spear of Destiny

and all of this mad
stuff, you know?

So the evil
relic-hunting Nazis were back.

But what would be
Indy's motivation

to go after the same prize?

I didn't come for
the cup of Christ.

I came to find my father.

It's the first time
we see Indiana Jones

in a real emotional
relationship.

It is you, Junior!

This is absolutely
the heart of the film.

It's a father and son film.

You have chosen wisely.

Speaking
of wise choices,

finding the right man
to play Indie's dad?

Well, that seemed
almost preordained.

We immediately said, "Oh
well, that's Sean Connery!"

There was
near total consensus.

As much as everybody
just looks at him as...

Bond.

James Bond.

He's done a
lot of brilliant work

in other movies, playing
other characters.

Yeah, try and get
him on the phone.

Forget it.

Because
since retiring as 007,

Sean had become one of the
busiest stars in Hollywood,

from a police officer with
his own fatherly advice.

He pulls a knife,
you pull a gun.

He sends one of yours
to the hospital,

you send him one of
his to the morgue.

To well,
less renowned work.

When someone finally did
get Sean on the horn--

Then it was just
like Sean Connery,

"Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Okay, done, yeah, he's in."

You gotta admit that
Steven does amazing casting.

It was perfect.

Connery signed
on with great expectations.

With Sean Connery, you know
that there's gonna be a great

back and forth and
great repartee.

- Dad.
- What?

- Dad!
- What?

This being
a family affair...

...the third
"Indiana Jones" picture

would also need
someone to play a...

Junior!

How am I doing, boy?

And Harrison Ford
had already met just the kid.

In fact, he'd already played dad

to the rising star River
Phoenix in "The Mosquito Coast."

I thought it was
brilliant casting.

I could see it right away.

And obviously Steven did too.

'Cause he was really an
amazing kid, number one,

and actor, number two.

It belongs in a museum.

And to
play opposite Ford

for Indy's other
key relationship,

another page from
the book of Bond.

I'm an early riser myself.

I played a bond girl
in Roger Moore's...

♪ A view to a kill ♪

Steven Spielberg and
George Lucas interviewed me

and asked me if I was
frightened of rats.

And I told them
that I had no fear

of the four-legged
rat, only the two.

And they said that there'd
be no two-legged rats

working on the movie.

Except for, of
course, the villain in the movie

who almost cast himself after
a chat with his neighbor.

I lived right next
door to Robert Watts,

the executive producer
of "Star Wars."

And one afternoon we
were in the garden

talking across the fence like
you do when you're neighbors.

I just propped the question of,

"What are you doing
at the moment?"

And he said, "I'm making the
second "Star Wars" movie.

"Do you want to be in it?"

Wow!

Thanks in part
to Lucas's propensity

to cast Brits as baddies.

He felt surprise was wiser.

He's as
clumsy as he is stupid.

When it came to
"Indiana Jones,"

he was the executive
producer on that too.

And he got me the interview
for the Nazi officer.

And I didn't get it.

This is how we say
goodbye in Germany.

You win
some, you lose some.

Well my agent rang and said,

"Sorry you didn't
get that, Julian."

And
then you win some.

"Do you want to
play Walter Donovan?"

I said, "Well, you
mean the baddy?"

He said, "Yes, they
want you for that."

That's how I got it.

To play
the role of Kazim,

Kevork Malikyan was cast by
Spielberg, partly on his looks.

He said, you know,
"Can I ask you, Kevorkian,

has anyone told you before

that your face is a
combination of Robert De Niro,

Al Pacino, and Dustin Hoffman?"

I really--

I absolutely
didn't know what to say.

But Kevork
didn't have to say anything.

In that case, God be
with you in your quest.

With
the cast locked in,

the only unknown was
whether Harrison Ford

would find himself
operating in the shadow

of his legendary costar.

I came here to save you!

Oh yeah?

And who's gonna
come to save you?

Oh my goodness.

I was shocked.

When shooting on

"Indiana Jones and the Last
Crusade" began in May of 1988...

How dare you kiss me?

The onscreen
chemistry was electric.

- They'll kill us!
- I know, Dad!

Between the two
male leads, that is.

And I used to say it to
Sean, "You've got my part

because you're having so
many scenes with Harrison."

I think the reason that
this movie worked as well

was because of their
relationship on screen

and their chemistry.

What do you wanna talk about?

It's interesting to
see him with Sean though,

because Sean's quite serious.

When Sean's on the set,
everybody lifts their game.

This is a new
experience for me.

I think this was the
first time they met.

And the camaraderie between
the two of them, incredible.

It's just like they had been
father and son for years.

Five minutes
would've been enough.

Known
for his ad-libs...

I love you.

I know.

That was one.

Harrison had met his match.

Junior?

The scene when I am
discovered to be Mr. Baddy.

Didn't I warn you not to
trust anybody, Dr. Jones?

And Harrison said...

How did you know
she was a Nazi?

Well, I don't know what was
in the original script.

Sean just said...

She talks in her sleep.

And that
just broke us all up.

The whole of the set
started to erupt in laughter.

He completely invented
that line and did it.

And of course Spielberg
says that's in.

God, it took us five
minutes to recover.

Harrison
Ford, now in his element,

even alongside his
legendary costar,

allowed the comedy to
spill off the screen too.

People really know
what they're doing.

Harrison's very private.

He's not a joke teller,

but he's one of those
who makes a remark

out of the corner of
his mouth.

Very under, and you never
know when it's gonna come.

So he was very good
company on that level.

And then this is just
after the tank explodes,

you make a hard...

But there
was no horsing around

for one of the movie's
key action scenes,

involving tanks and horses

and the grinding
dust of North Africa.

Just another
day at the office.

But not just
another day at the office

for Julian Glover.

When I read the
script for that,

I thought I'm going to
achieve my lifetime ambition,

which is to be like General
Rommel in World War II

at the top of a tank going...

And I got that wish.

I got to do a Rommel.

Not that Jones!

The other Jones!

Some actors
on "The Last Crusade"

found their work to be
unexpectedly physical.

Vernon Dobtcheff
got to say a line

that would become the most
quoted of his 200+ films.

If you are a Scottish Lord,

then I am Mickey Mouse!

Steven said to Harrison,

"I want you to punch him
at the end of the line."

And I slid down the
wall, and that was that.

But in Vernon,

Spielberg had seen something
hiding in plain sight,

he felt was perfect
for the scene.

There was a case
for an Egyptian mummy.

He put me in profile like that.

And that was the gag, you see?

He just wanted
the nose.

It seemed like every actor

was making an impression
and I was given a chance

to make an even bigger one.

One I wasn't expecting.

Steven said, "Alison,
get into the boat

and drive it straight
towards the boat

with the camera on it."

I hear "action" and I'm zooming.

And they're saying, "Now,
before you get too close,

veer off to the right."

Are you crazy?

You don't go between 'em!

Go between them?
Are you crazy?

This was the
worst possible time

to get starstruck.

I started to get hypnotized

seeing all of
these famous faces.

"Oh, there's Steven.

Oh, there's George."

I could see their faces.

They were going...

That way.

I said, "Go around!"

I went, "Oh."

And I just turned the
boat very quickly.

It was harrowing for them,

but in the end it
was a good scene.

We went to the
back of the studio,

huge pool, which was
supposed to be the river.

They used stunts for me,
not for Harrison Ford.

He did all his stunts himself.

In the same scene,

Harrison was looking
out for his co-stars.

It was a horribly cold day.

And somebody brought in a
coffee with brandy in it.

He said, "Excuse
me, where's Kevork?

Where's Kevork's drink?"

So they
brought me a brandy.

So, Dr. Jones, it's yours.

Kevork
got his coffee,

but he wasn't getting any extra

when it came to what
he was there for.

George Lucas came
to me and he said,

"You know, Kevork, in
the original story,

your character was
going to Petra,

but we decided to kill you from,

to kill
your character.

So you will not be
coming to Petra."

For the unrighteous.

If I hadn't been
killed by the Germans,

I would've appeared till
the end of the film,

I suppose, in the
original story.

Julian Glover's
character's demise...

It's very interesting,
that death scene.

Required
more finesse.

We spent a very
long time beforehand.

And a little
bit of ILM genius behind it

as practical as it was inspired.

They made a death mask of
me out of Plaster of Paris.

I had wires going down
my back, up my front.

A very elaborate two day shoot.

What is happening to me?

Right near the
beginning, my hair grows!

And that of course was
such simple device,

which Steven invented.

There was a man in front of me

and he held onto the
front of the hair

and pulled it like that, and
it went shoop, like that.

And they shot it in reverse.

I had to scream backwards

from my maximum scream of fear

down to my just
starting to scream.

It's the most difficult scene
for me in the whole movie.

I thankfully did it well

and well enough for
Harrison to come over to me

and say, "Are you okay?"

I went, "Yes, I'm
acting."

We have got it.

Come on!

But sadly, not acting
for as long as I had hoped.

I was really annoyed
reading in the script

that my character
was going to die

because I wanted to come back
in the next "Indiana Jones."

Honey,
I can't hold you!

I can reach it.

Steven goes, "Action."

I fall, I scream.

I hear Steven saying, "And cut."

I went, "It's okay.

I'm alive.

I had a soft landing just
come down and get me."

And Steven kept
saying, "You're dead."

"You're dead."

I said, "No, no, no, no.

Could you not just leave
her with one finger moving

with the possibility--?"

And he said, "No, you're dead."

Let it go.

But with
production nearly wrapped,

the toughest tests were
still waiting in the wings.

What does that mean?

There was no CG.

We didn't have
computers.

The biggest challenge

finishing "The Last Crusade..."

Why are you
sitting there resting

when we're so near the end?

...was taking the
massive

and making it small...

So it was a blimp miniature.

...in order
to make it big.

And a miniature
biplane when it detaches

and then flies off, was a
white blimp on a blue sky,

which is the enemy
of visual effects.

That was the challenge.

And none
of this was helped

by the reality of
filmmaking 40 years ago.

The entire film was made
with models and miniatures

and real explosions.

And there was no CG.

But we didn't have computers.

You know,
we didn't have CG.

Which made shooting

as much action as
possible crucial,

even if some of it we
would never get to see.

Do you know about
the Zeppelin business?

Such as a
spectacular dogfight

that originally
featured a bigger dog.

What they had originally
was a German officer,

which Indiana Jones took on.

And they shot the whole
sequence and then they cut it.

But that's what happens
with movies, isn't it?

Hang on, Dad, we're going in.

Believing
the dogfight

dragged down the
story's momentum,

Spielberg clipped
the scene's wings.

Spielberg discovered
he had come up short,

but only after location
shooting wrapped.

We shot that
motorcycle chase scene

in San Anselmo. Post-production.

It was a U.S. unit.

Brilliant sequence,
brilliant sequence.

Certain directors a studio
demands a screening or two

or three or four and
then gives their notes.

But Steven and George
were at the level of,

"Here's my movie, I hope
you like it."

"Indiana Jones."

"The Last Crusade"
hit theaters in May of 1989.

- Nice landing.
- Thanks.

It landed
at an unusual time

with its spring release, but
was universally embraced.

I was absolutely
happy with what I'd done

'cause I knew that's
what Steven wanted.

It's more beautiful
than I'd ever imagined.

It just has everything.

Looks like the best parts
have already been spoken for.

It's got the amazing
action and adventure.

The film had risen to the top

with fans and cast alike.

It's like being with a friend

and joining him on a journey.

Sharing your adventures.

"The Last Crusade"

netted almost 475
million worldwide

from the budget of
just 48 million,

becoming the highest grossing
film of the original trilogy.

And I'm pleased that
other people like it.

I'm pleased it's
been successful.

And its reception

couldn't have been
further from the shadow

cast by "Temple of Doom."

Sweetheart, after all
the fun we've had together.

The franchise
that began in old Hollywood

had embedded a new
star in the firmament.

I think Steven was very lucky

to have Harrison
all the way through.

I thought I'd lost you, boy.

You know, having looked at
him closely in that period,

he has a relaxed "don't give
a fuck" quality about him.

There's something about that

that is extremely appealing.

I owe you a gin.

Let's not forget

the people Harrison
brought up with him.

Indy, my friend.

Ke Huy Quan, to see him
now all these years later,

and then to get the Oscar.

And the Oscar
goes to Ke Huy Quan.

That
thrills me so much.

He had
become a man of action,

but to grow as an actor,

he needed to add another
feather to his fedora.

Harrison's combination of
action star and thinking man

made him a perfect Jack Ryan.

The former carpenter

who just a few years
earlier didn't know Jack...

I didn't even know how long
it took to bake a potato.

Was about
to show the world

he could be a jack
of all trades.

How dare you come in
here and lecture me?

How dare you, sir?
