New Yorkers take pride

in remembering the most
peaceful revolution the world

has known.

It is time to look back on
the events of a decade ago,

to consider the progress

Adelaide Norris, 24.

She seems to be the founder
of the Women's Army.

Her background?

Ordinary.

Typical of a lot of blacks,

mother a domestic,
that's her on the left.

Her father died when
she was a teenager.

Eight kids in the family,
Adelaide is the oldest,

she helped raise the others.

These are some of them.

Always a jock, lived in
track and basketball, goes to

school nights, works
construction jobs
during the day.

Homosexual?

Yes.

The Women's Army appears
to be dominated by blacks

and lesbians.

Norris started it as a radical
separatist vigilante group

three or four years ago.

- I'd like to know if
anyone has any ideas or any

suggestions to how we can
keep this center open.

Because for those of
you who are working,

what this means is that you're
gonna have to stop working

and stay home and take
care of your kids.

- No, it's gonna be impossible
for me stop to working.

We have to figure
out some kind of way

so we can keep the center
open independently.

equal under the cover

of a social democracy.

- Today began the week
long celebration of

the 10th anniversary of
the War of Liberation.

The festivities began this
afternoon, as organized labor

joined forces in a
parade up Fifth Avenue,

commemorating the
overwhelming victory

by the Social Labor
Party 10 years ago.

Labor's abandonment of
the old Democratic Party,

is considered by many
the cornerstone of
today's liberation.

Setting aside for a while
the growing pressure

of economic crisis,

Labor spent the day in
a celebration of pride

and accomplishment.

Mayor Zubrinsky combined
partying and politicking,

when he addressed a throng
of 150,000 marchers,

at the parade's end in the
Central Park sheep meadow.

- Why is it called Women's Army?

I thought armies
were for the men.

That sounds awfully masculine.

Hillary Hurst, 26.

We figure her to be the acting
leader of the Women's Army.

There's no official
political record,

but she's been
instrumental in bringing

the Army to large
numbers of women

through induction meetings
she holds around the city.

What connection
does she have to Norris?

- Well she's not
responsible to Norris

within the organization.

They are in close contact

but that may have to do
with their lifestyles.

Is
Hearst in command?

It's
impossible to say.

We're not even sure

how the organization
is structured.

All we know is that they're
starting to appeal to women

who would have written them off
as lunatics a few years ago.

- President of the
city council Ryan

As chief executive officer
of this great city,

I am pleased, proud,

share in that which is

the 10th anniversary of
the war of liberation.

The anniversary which
heralds our society

as being the very first

true socialist democracy
the world has ever known.

Ours has been the greatest
cultural revolution of all time,

through which we
have wed democracy,

with its respect for
freedom and individualism,

and its abhorrence of all
forms of communism and fascism

coupled with the moral
and ethical humanism

of American socialism.

- Police have been
puzzled in the past week

by what they describe

as well-organized
bands of 15 to 20 women

on bicycles attacking
men on the street.

While the victims have claimed

that these incidents
were unprovoked,

eyewitness reports have led
investigators to believe

that these men may themselves

have been attempting
to assault women.

However officials have
condemned the lawlessness

of such vigilante groups and
asked for information leading

to the arrests of
the women involved.

Maybe even their
telephone numbers.

We'll have more information
on the 11 o'clock report.

for those bicycle incidents.

the vigilante sensibility.

Watch 'em, put some pressure
on them at their jobs.

Violence flared today
in Lower Manhattan

as youths in their late
teens and early 20s

threw Molotov cocktails

in an angry demonstration
outside City Hall.

The demonstration
began as a protest

against what the young men call

meaningless jobs given to them

under the work-fair program.

They claim that women
and other minorities

receive preferential treatment
in the real job market,

however human services officials
deny that this is true.

Today's violence began
when police tried

to remove demonstrators
from the mayor's office

and it continued
through the morning

as angry young men
roamed the downtown area

indiscriminately destroying
storefronts and cars

and attacking passers-by.

Police spokesmen
denied accusations
that they overreacted

to the rioters, citing the
sympathy many officers feel

for the demonstrators' cause.

They claimed they
handled an explosive

and dangerous situation as
well as could be expected.

In a statement released
late this afternoon

Mayor Zubrinsky
acknowledged that

there are problems with
the work-fair system

but stressed that he would
not tolerate disruptions

that threaten the public
safety in this city.

As editors of
the Socialist Youth Review

we regret that many of the
construction and steel workers

laid off in the past few
weeks have been the women,

hired only last year.

the industries have been
overburdened recently

by the enormous number
of minority workers
who are applying

for a limited number of jobs.

Only a small percentage of
each group can be accommodated

in these trades.

The rest will receive
alternative placement

through the work-fair program.

We feel that women who
immediately cry sexism

are being selfish
and irresponsible.

Any move toward separatism,

the demand for equal
rights for one group alone,

hurts our struggle for
the equal advancement

of all parts of society.

- We have a right to violence,

all oppressed people
have a right to violence,

and I wanna tell you something,
it's like the right to pee.

You gotta have to
the right place,

you gotta have the right time,

you gotta have the
appropriate situation

and I am absolutely
convinced that this is it.

Zella Wylie?

Yes.

Currently at the law
firm of Wylie and Miller.

Although there was a move to
disbar her a few years back.

Now what's interesting here
is that the Norris girl

seems to be her protege.

Here's Norris with
Wylie's kid sister.

In fact, the women's
militia that Wylie formed

during the war of liberation

may be a prototype
of the Women's Army.

We've got to considerate the
possibility that Wylie is using

these young women, who were
kids during the revolution,

for her own ends.

The woman's
a walking loony bin.

- I was in Washington
when she was appointed

to AGW for workers
and consumer advocate.

The moment the
silly bitch gets in

she starts a class action
against the oil companies.

They threw her out on her ass.

We want a job!

We want a job now!

- What do you
think you're doing?

Get this chain off here.

By the time my men come
here if it's not off

I'm gonna call the cops.

- We gotta work, you
guys work, we gotta work.

- We need jobs, you need jobs.

Some of us got fired off
this job, we want back on.

We got fired from jobs all over
the city because we're women

not because we
can't do our trade.

We wanna get back on,
we want you to join us.

We're gonna stop work now,
when we get back on that job,

work together, we'll
all work together.

- That makes sense,
I got no control.

- You can support us and
stay out here with us

until they let us all in.

- Yeah but if I don't go
in there I got no money.

don't have no money neither,

and we have family also.

- We know what you're
saying, we're all going on

this job together.

- The entire organization
which is represented

by this circle is about
1,000 individuals, women.

It's subdivided
into small cells,

each one of which
selects its own leader

on a rotating basis.

How do they overlap?

- They overlap in this way.

After each of the small
cells has selected a leader,

about every two or three
months a leader is selected

from those leaders for
the entire organization.

And this is the problem.

We don't know how to find
out at any given time

who is in charge.

a station dedicated not only
for the liberation of women,

but a station dedicated to
sound off and defend all women.

We are here ready to
deal with every lie

that holds women responsible
for rape and prostitution.

The lies that hold our
sisters of the street

responsible for the harassment
of all women on the street.

The lies that push the
women into the street

as quickly as they force
us out of the workplace.

- Valerie, our party has
decided on an explicit policy

to integrate the
individual into society.

In that light, we
don't have any more use

for these antiquated notions
of goodness and badness.

In other words there
is no such thing,

as far as our leaders are
concerned, as a bad boy.

These are just sick people.

They've succumbed to
emotional illness.

- To rehabilitate rapists.

And they've been cutting
back on everything else,

like the victims, you know,
women, they've received nothing.

They've cut back so
substantially that there's very

little left there, they
can't service hardly anyone.

Even for other programs,
you know, where a woman

has a emotional problems,
there's nowhere for her to go.

So everyone is wondering where
are we going to go from here,

because we've been working
out in the community,

we've been trying
to educate people,

we've been pamphleting, we've
been going door to door,

we've put out a lot
of posters everywhere,

and we've gained a lot of
support but on the other hand,

not enough attention has
been drawn to the problem.

So the women in the
unit met recently,

and they are ready to move,

ready to escalate
what we been doing

but the problem remains
that our faces are known.

So this
seems to complete

the leadership of the Army.

It is not clear exactly
how each of them functions

or what connection
they have with Norris.

This is
Radio Regazza bringing you

the latest news observation.

There seems to be some
very peculiar things

happening these days.

Angry unemployed people
are rioting in the streets

and the city is on
fire with their rage.

Now what do you
think the government

plans to do about
this situation,

besides beating 'em over
the head with billy clubs?

Do they plan to
supply them with jobs,

with training programs,
or with decent housing?

Nah, uh-uh, you know
what they're gonna do?

The same bloody tactic they
pulled before the revolution.

Remember, and I'm here to warn
you, it's gonna happen again.

They're already starting
the shuffleboard,

an act on a grand scale
where all the poor

and the unemployed will
be shoved economically

into the ghetto.

And then what happens?

It's gonna be doogie
time in the big city.

Our government is
gonna flood those areas

with the best smack imaginable,

and it's gonna send everybody
into a deep narcotic sleep

where they will not weep
or cry out any more.

- Now I was thinking
maybe it's time that you

did something to make
the government more aware

of what you're doing.

Something enormous that would
just bring a lot of attention.

- Look at this stuff,
there's nothing here.

There's nothing here
at all, there's junk.

- Hey, look, I went through
everything, the place is clean.

- You're sure it's clean,
you go through the desks?

- Rolodexes, names on the wall?

they're protecting themselves,

maybe we're gonna have to
go through their houses.

I'm delighted tonight to
be able to introduce you

to three enterprising
young women who have,

as part of their work
on the Socialist News,

developed the
Socialist Youth Review.

We have Pat Crosby.

- Hello.

- Becky Dunlop and Kathy Larson.

- Hi, aren't you
from Phoenix Radio?

- Yes, I am.

- I'm from the Women's Army,

have you heard about
the Women's Army?

- Yes, I have.

- Okay what we're trying to
do right now is pretty much

publicize it and make people
more aware of what's going on

with the Army and
what it entails.

My reasons for talking to
you and even stopping you

is because I feel in your
position that maybe you can

help us out in some
kind of manner.

- I would like to say yes, but
I'm working with some other

women right now, and I
wouldn't want to commit myself

or them.

So maybe we can talk about
it some other time, okay?

- What about questions of
problems that we hoped by

now, by 10 years
into the revolution,

we wouldn't be
addressing any longer?

How do you feel about there
are small groups here and there

that talk about how we
still experience rape,

how we still experience
prostitution in our society?

- I think the statistics will
show you that the percentage

of rape and prostitution at
this point is significantly

lower than it was in
pre-Revolutionary society.

And that obviously
it's an advancement,
it's a step forward.

It's impossible to talk
about the complete, you know,

abolition, because it's not
the nature of this government,

they don't abolish.

It's a question of a gradual
move towards something

and I think everything is sort
of leading up to the point

Where those things
simply no longer.

- I don't wanna be involved
with the Women's Army.

It's all talk and no
action, it's all rhetoric.

I've checked it out
and we're doing enough

in the community by
putting out our music.

- But by us coming to you
and requesting some time,

obviously we're
attempting change.

- I'd like to ask, pick
up on something Pat said

early on in our
discussion about how the

restlessness, is the best word
for it, because I don't think

it amounts yet to a movement,
nor do I suspect that it will.

But that the attitude
and the impatience

of some young women
might be interpreted

as counter-revolutionary.

- Well there's two things I
think about it, first of all,

because of the media, in
a way being what it is,

it's very dangerous to
identify a number of

demonstrations on the streets
as the possible growth

of a new movement of women,

because I don't
think it is that,

I don't think it will
get to that stage.

And I also think
that the situation

with these
demonstrations has to do

with the fact that
this group of women

have grown up within
in the last 10 years

and have experienced this
revolution as the status quo.

So it's really kind
of a, I wouldn't care

to identify it
completely as such,

but the situation seems to be
kind of a gratuitous desire

for excitement and romanticism,
and the idea of revolution,

which is constantly fed to you.

But yet the means of
revolution are denied,

because they already
live in a structure

which is prepared to give
all that to these people so.

- So it's a certain
amount of envy

of the experiences that
I had and that you had.

- You think the group
will make you strong?

- No, but they say there's
strength in numbers, right?

- Who say so?

- Who said that?

- I think I got enough
strength right here,

I think I can back
my own self up.

- Anyway, I'm telling
you, they gonna come

and take you out the houses.

You watch, you see.

- Gonna take you
out your houses?

- Yep, take your kids away,
they gonna do some funny shit,

you'll see.

- Well you gotta
be prepared for it.

- Yeah, right!

- That's what women gotta
do, get her mind together

because her mind
is not together.

- So how you get it together
unless you come together?

- Yeah you gotta come together.

Personally you
gotta come together,

before you can go any group,
you gotta come together.

- Right okay but then
after you do that

can you join the forces?

- No, I'm not gonna join nobody,

I got my own forces.

- Oh see, yeah,
yeah, right, right.

whatever you wanna do,

everybody else is saying.

gonna be stronger

by going into the Army, right?

So go ahead.

Nobody's stopping you.

I feel strong just
as I am right now,

I don't need no back-up.

I don't want nobody
backing me up.

- It's not a gang,

what the army did?

- This girl got raped over

single demonstration

by one pressure group,
it's separatist.

We risk splitting the party
at a time of major crisis.

- I don't understand
how you as women can say

that women's grievances
are separatist.

You can't even see how
it's affecting you.

You know, you're oppressed
too and it's pathetic

that you can't even see it.

- Look we know there are
problems, we're aware of that,

but things are so much better
now than they were before,

it's not gonna happen overnight.

It's important that the
party remains strong

so progress can be made.

- Better now?

You know the way my
mother brought us up

there were eight of us
and she took care of us

doing domestic work,
all by herself.

And abortions?

She couldn't even
think about abortions.

And daycare?

We took care of ourselves,
no one took care of us,

and there are plenty
of women nowadays

living in that same manner,

black women, Latin
women, young women

living in that same lifestyle.

- Okay, everyone had a hard
time during the revolution.

But if we remove the
only structure that
exists for progress

we dissipate everything, it'll
be worse than it was before.

- I knew you
wouldn't understand.

Words and ideas they just
don't get through to you.

Look.

If you're not going
to write about it,

at least come out
of class skilled.

you know what's going on

and where it's happening.

We have a special announcement
from the Women's Army.

They're having a
mass demonstration

in Washington Square Park,

and we urge you all to go out

and to support
this demonstration.

Women must

And the thing about it
was these 3,000 women

were so separated, I mean,
it wasn't even unified.

If it was all together it
would be a lot different

than a group of women of here--

- You heard my story about
the division, you know,

they always talk about
unity, we need unity, unity,

but I always say if
you were the army

and the school and the head
of the health institutions

and the head of the government,
and all of you had guns,

which would you rather
see come through the door,

one lion, unified, or 500 mice?

And my answer is 500 mice
can do a lot of damage

and disruption.

If you're having a meeting
and everybody's all, you know,

gussied up.

- At this point now I think
that, I really, really

think that 'cause I've
been seriously just

questioning myself and
questioning the abilities

and what I have and
what I don't have

and where I can go.

And I think it's that time that

we really pick up arms
and really be prepared.

What took you so long?

- The economic sex war that
has threatened the city

in recent weeks erupted
last night as gangs of men,

mostly black, roamed the
streets, breaking windows,

looting stores, and
attacking passers-by.

Protesting what they
call racism in work-fair,

the rioters claim that
blacks are given meaningless

jobs that don't pay enough
to support their families.

Government officials
say the rioters will be

severely punished,
however they do admit

there are some problems
with the work-fair system,

and pledge that in the
future, priority placement

will be given to male
heads of families.

- I don't think we should
write about a group of women

who only emphasize
discrimination based on sex

as opposed to race or class.

- Also, their politic is
seems is just based on

spontaneous reaction to
any kind of oppression

without bothering
to analyze it first.

- Yeah, but I mean that says
a lot more about the way

we define what
constitutes the political

than any inability they
have to define themselves.

I mean, that kind of spontaneous
reaction is their platform.

They're linking their
experience of oppression

with an image or a
notion of a women's army.

They would find the
kind of dialogue we use

as prohibitive or as
a substitute for us.

- I just think it's
gonna be a difficult task

to try and get all the women
to think along that same line.

Because the reality
of having to deal

with taking up arms,
Adelaide, is really having.

I mean, whether we can
accept or be responsible

for the potential
violence thrust upon us.

From our own
violence thrust out.

- It's already happening.

It's here.

It's that time.

The Norris
woman is a problem.

She's becoming more and more
difficult to keep track of.

At the same time she
is increasingly hungry

for media attention.

She's organized the
underground radio,

and she's now got
international contacts.

Good, good.

I've got an idea if we
know what she's doing now,

we'll be knowing
what the Army will do

in six month's time.

- Throwing off their veils,

thousands of Algerian women
poured into the streets

to protest the execution
of a Polisario woman

Lila Kalo, by Moroccan troops

fighting to regain control
of the Western Sahara.

Lila Kalo was a leader
in a Polisario takeover

of the Western Sahara
five years ago.

Miss Kalo, who visited
the United States

during the transition at
the unofficial invitation

of Zella Wylie became
an outspoken critic

of the party after Ms. Wylie
was dismissed from her post

for alleged
counter-revolutionary
activities.

- For me, I want to rely
more, I want to develop

more weapons that have
a real substantial

debilitating effect,
but it's not permanent.

It's one year, it's two years,
it's five years, whatever.

I mean, even blinding
someone for five years

is different to me than
shooting them forever.

And we'll turn the
people against us.

Every time we shoot,
you shoot somebody

be it a man or woman or a child,

that's being affected,
that's causing sorrow,

and who do those people look to?

They look to the Women's Army.

And then the community
can be turned against us.

- She say that she is
very happy to meet you.

She's asking if you are
Zella Wylie's friend.

- Yes, I am.

And could you ask her
does she understand

why I'm here to see her?

- She knows why you are here,

and we're gonna help you,

but also we want
that you help us.

- Tell her thank
you for her help,

and I'd like to know
how I can help her,

because right now
I don't understand

how I can help her.

- If you want to
help us, you know,

you could come all
the way to the Sahara,

and walk with the guerrillas,

and then you will have
much more opportunities

She was to be
arraigned late today

on charges of conspiring to
transport arms into the US.

Norris is said to
have hanged herself

after writing a note,

in which she said
she would rather die

than spend another day
in a fascist prison.

we've been troubled by
the official reports

in the death of Adelaide Norris,

the founder of the Women's Army.

Grave inconsistencies
in the police records

and in the coroner's report
have led us to believe

that Norris did not commit
suicide, but was murdered.

Assassinated, if you will,
for political reasons.

As party members and
editors of this paper,

we had objections to Norris's
idealistic and separatist

views, however we
respected her commitment

as a community organizer.

It is alleged by the
government that Norris

was involved in arms dealing
with the Polisario rebels

sympathetic to her cause.

If that was so, why wasn't
she allowed a fair trial?

Evidence clearly suggests
that she was murdered

by the police or by
government agents operating

outside any legal sanction.

When Norris returned
to New York,

she had no weapons
on her person.

Nor was there any proof
that she was successful

in her negotiations.

Did the party so fear
that she could rally

an armed group of women
that an assassination

was necessary?

support to the Army

as a legitimate
revolutionary group,

because we also
believe that the party

has been undermining
the economic and social

position of women.

Our government, which
has prided itself

on being the first
democratic socialism,

is neither democratic
nor socialist.

In forming an alliance
with male labor,

the government has
reinforced the caste system

that has always existed
in this country.

Women fought the
war of liberation

with the expectation
that the government

would work beyond
reform toward a truly

egalitarian society.

Then and now, the
party has argued

that social
transformation must wait

until the country attains
economic stability.

But unless we struggle
now for our rights,
