celebrating the haunting career

of The Devil's Favorite Demon.

[Jim] Absolutely unbelievable.

[Michael] Welcome, everyone, to
WWE's Greatest Moments.

I'm Michael Cole.

And on this edition, we're
looking back

at the best of Kane.

[Michael] Before The Big
Red Machine arrived,

his story began with
one of the darkest

and most twisted origins in WWE
history.

[Michael] In 1997, The
Undertaker's former manager,

Paul Bearer, revealed that The
Deadman may have an equal.

Bearer claimed that The
Undertaker's half-brother Kane,

thought to have been lost in
their family house fire years

ago, is still alive.

[Paul] He's waited 20 years to
face his brother.

He's coming, Deadman.

Kane's coming.

He's coming.

[Michael] At Badd Blood 1997, as
The Undertaker faced Shawn

Michaels inside Hell in a Cell,
the WWE Universe was introduced

to the embodiment of Hellfire
and Brimstone as The Demon

finally revealed himself to the
world.

[Vince] Now, will come the
Tombstone.

No.

[Jim] Wait a minute.

[Kane's music]

[Jim] What the hell's that?

[Vince] Oh, my God.

Wait a minute.

It's Paul Bearer.

That's got to be- That's got to
be Kane.

[Seth Rollins] When you first
see Kane for the first time,

you get this monster coming out
in this awesome-looking mask,

the gear is incredible.

He's ripping the door off the
cell.

[Jim] My God.

[Vince] Oh, my God.

[Jerry Lawler] Oh, my God.

[Vince] He just ripped the door
off its hinges.

[Kane] The live audience had no
idea what was going on.

[Jim] Oh, my God.

Look at the size of this human
being.

[Undertaker] You get this look
in The Undertaker's face that

you've never seen before.

There's this look of
bewilderment in my eyes.

[Kane] Kane is the
anti-Undertaker.

He would come out and raise the
lights back on, his hands up.

So, Kane threw his hands down.

That was just all perfectly
executed.

[Vince] Undertaker set up for
the Tombstone,

driven down to the canvas.

[Kane] For the first time, I
actually felt

like I was a WWE superstar.

That's the greatest debut in WWE
history.

[Vince] Kane has defeated The
Undertaker.

[Jim] This is shocking.

??

[Michael] Kane tore his
way through competitors.

[Jim] He's the baddest son of
bitch you'll ever see.

[Michael] Officials-

[Jim] Oh, my God.

[Jerry] Ooh.

[Michael] -and even Pete Rose.

[Jerry] Pete.

That's baseball's all-time hit
leader.

[Michael] The Hit King himself
would be a guest ring announcer

at WrestleMania XIV where he
would come face-to-face

with a different
"Big Red Machine."

[Pete Rose] The city
of losers.

You can't win
a World Series.

[Kofi Kingston] Something you
got to understand about Boston

fans, we are passionate about
our sports.

We're serious about it.

Pete Rose comes out talking
trash.

[Pete] How about it?

[Kane's music]

[Jim] Hellfire and Brimstone
personified.

Straight out of the-the mouth of
hell

comes The Undertaker's
brother, Kane.

[Kane] Watching Pete Rose do his
thing and realizing,

"My gosh, this guy is a
great performer.

He would've been a great
wrestling heel."

[Jerry] What is he doing?

[Jim] No, no, that's Pete Rose.

[Undertaker] To see Kane muscle
Pete Rose up and then spike him,

it's awesome.

[Jim] Pete Rose.

[Jerry] I cannot believe it.

[Pete Rose] Kane Tombstoned me.

It's not like that in baseball.

[Undertaker] It became a
WrestleMania moment

for a few years.

It was like a running gag.

If Pete Rose shows up, Kane's
going to Tombstone him.

[Michael] That's Pete Rose.

[Jerry] Pete, not again.

[Michael] Another Tombstone to
Pete Rose.

[Kane] It turned out to be kind
of the folklore of WWE.

[Jerry] Uh-oh.

[Jim] Oh, no.

Pete Rose just got Chokeslammed.

[Kane] And I always had just a
tremendous time

doing anything to him.

[Jerry] Once again, Pete makes
an ass out of himself.

[Jim] For the third year in a
row.

[Kane] I never envisioned that
that would become

part of Kane's legacy.

[laughing]

[Michael] After Kane sent Pete
Rose back to the dugout,

he would go on to face
his older brother,

The Undertaker, in their
first epic encounter.

[Undertaker's music]

[Jim] The Undertaker has
won this match.

[Michael] It was clear there
was unfinished business

for the paranormal pair.

It was just one month later,
they would clash

in a battle like no other.

It was the first-ever Inferno
Match,

where the only way to win is to
set your opponent on fire.

[Jerry] Do you feel
the heat out here?

[Jim] Oh, hell yeah,
I feel the heat.

[Jerry] What do you think it
feels like in that ring?

[Undertaker] The Inferno
Match,

one of the craziest matches
ever designed.

[Jerry] Those flames exploded,
JR.

[Kane] One of my
favorite matches

because it was very unique,

and I also think that that
was our best match ever.

[Jim] The heat is unbearable,
folks.

I'm telling you.

[Jerry] We were as close as
anybody.

All of a sudden, I could smell,
you know, you-

There's that di-distinct
smell when something-

air's getting singed.

[Jim] Man, you talk about right
in your face, folks.

[Jerry] I think my eyebrows are
singed.

[Undertaker] The fire was just
sucking up all the oxygen.

So, there's no air to breathe,
and we're going at it.

[Jerry] Oh.

[Jim] Oh, Undertaker threw Kane
over the top rope.

[Jerry] How's he going to get
back in?

[Undertaker] And then we have to
figure out

how to get out of the ring.

I ended up diving over the top.

[Jim] There's The Undertaker.

Oh, my God.

[Undertaker] Knocking Kane into
the ring post,

that set his arm on fire.

[Jim] Kane's on fire.

Kane is on fire.

[Jerry] Ooh.

[Jim] Kane is on fire.

[Jerry] Look out.

[Jim] He's burning.

[Kane] And the surreal moment
where I'm looking at myself

and I'm on fire in front
of about 20,000 people,

and, of course, millions of
people watching at home-

[Jerry] Put him out.

Put him out.

[Kane] -we made a faux sleeve.

I was okay with what was
happening.

It was really an amazing moment.

[Jim] A lot of unique matches in
my time,

but nothing ever like this
one.

[Michael] The legend of Kane had
told us that his face

was badly burned as a child.

So, his iconic mask was a
necessity.

More than just concealing his
injuries,

his mask meant everything.

It guarded his secrets.

[Jerry] That fire disfigured
Kane.

[Jim] Oh, wait a minute.

[Jerry] He's protected that
identity his entire life.

[Michael] In 2003, Kane was
given a World Heavyweight

Championship opportunity, but if
he lost, he would lose his mask.

A risk worth taking.

[Kane's music]

[Jerry] Most of the time, the
challenger

has everything to win and
nothing to lose,

but that's not the case
with Kane tonight.

[Jim] Kane must become the World
Heavyweight Champion

or he must unmask.

[Jerry] Oh.

[Bruce Prichard] Unmasking Kane
was probably one of

the top debates over the years
that-that we've had.

[crowd cheers]

[Jim] Here it comes.

Here it comes.

The Tombstone.

[Jerry] Oh.

[Jim] Oh.

The referee didn't see Orton's
interference.

And no.

[bell rings]

[Jerry] Oh, my God.

Are we going to see it now, JR?

[Kane] When I lost the-the
match,

I was pretty nervous because
I'd been very successful

up until that point, um, as a
masked character.

I realized that this was an
opportunity to take Kane

into another direction
completely.

[Jerry] Here it comes.

Oh, my God.

[Jim] God.

[Seth] I remember it being
terrifying.

Everything was hideous.

You know, everything was, like,
shaved.

I think his eyebrows were gone
and stuff.

He looked horrifying.

[Jim] What the hell?

[Jerry] What the hell is that?

[Kane] Crowd reaction was
exactly what we wanted it to be.

I think they were surprised and
shocked.

What in the world did we- did
we- did we just see and-

[Jerry] Look at that grotesque
face.

[Jim] My God.

[Kane] And it would go from
being a physical monster

to much more of a
psychological monster.

[Michael] The mask was Kane's
identity.

It was all he knew.

When he was forced to remove it,

Kane struggled to face
the world again.

[Eric Bischoff] You will go out
and appear in front of those

people tonight, because if you
don't, you're fired.

[Michael] And when his hand was
forced-

The Big Red Monster
would strike again.

[Jim] Well, we are back live
here on Raw,

and we're just as anxious as
you are to see what's going

to happen here with Kane.

[Kane] That was one of those fun
points in my career

because it was a blank
canvas

and we were just
starting to paint it.

Anyone that tried to get in
Kane's way got destroyed.

[Jim] Good Lord.

[Jerry] Oh, my gosh, on the
steel.

[Jim] Good Lord, that's it.

[Kane] What is going to happen?

This guy is on the loose.

And now he's like a, like, a
true movie monster.

[Kane's music]

[Jim] What the hell?

[Jerry] Oh, my God.

[Kane] This guy was Hannibal
Lecter,

but he was 7-foot-tall
and 320 pounds.

[Jim] Oh, my God.

Oh, he's going after Van Dam.

[Rob Van Dam] It was constant
escalation.

Kane was a real-life horror
movie.

[Jerry] He said he hated Rob
Van- Ooh.

[Jim] Oh, my God.

Kane, Bischoff.

Oh, my God.

[Jerry] Look out.

[Jim] For the love of God,
Bischoff's Chokeslammed

to hell by Kane.

[Eric] We just wanted to
literally shock the audience and

do something so over the top
that that would create the buzz.

[Jim] My God.

[Kane] It didn't matter who it
was.

At that point, you did not get
in Kane's way,

or something really bad was
going to happen to you.

[Jerry] Oh, my God.

[Jim] Kane has destroyed
Bischoff.

[Michael] When Kane first
appeared on the scene,

he was a mysterious figure
championed by his father,

Paul Bearer, who did
all his talking.

[Paul] Welcome to your worst
nightmare.

[Michael] But slowly over time,

Kane grew the
confidence to open up.

[X-Pac] Kane has got two words
for you.

[Kane] Suck it.

[crowd cheers]

[Michael] He even garnered
a fan following

that he dubbed the Kanenites.

[Kane] 17,000 screaming
Kanenites

rose to their feet in unison.

[Michael] Audience gravitated
toward Kane as he became

emboldened by his power to talk.

But in 2002, as Kane was about
to team up with The Rock and

Hulk Hogan, the WWE Universe

saw a side of The Demon that
no one expected.

[The Rock] Are you
ready to go out there

and whoop candy ass?

[Kane] Oh, I'm ready.

Are you ready?

[The Rock] You bet your ass I'm
ready.

[Kane] It doesn't matter if
you're ready.

[crowd cheers]

[Kane] That whole segment was
amazing because

it went from being just the guy
that didn't talk to now being

very entertaining with obviously
two of the most entertaining

superstars of all time.

And you know something,
brothers?

Whether it's the millions-

[crowd yells "And millions"]

[Kane] -and millions of The
Rock's fans, or 20,000

Hulkamaniacs, or 20,000
screaming Kanenites-

[Jerry] Kanenites?

[Kane] It was a great play on
Rock with his millions of fans

and the 20,000 screaming
Hulkamaniacs.

-whatcha gonna do-

[The Miz] The star was Kane, and
the reason

he was the star is because
of the reactions as well.

[Kane] -whatcha gonna do when
Hulk Hogan and The Rock

and the Big Red Machine
run wild on you?

Whatcha gonna do?

[crowd cheers]

[Kane] That was an
incredible moment.

The Rock and Hogan enjoyed it as
well.

For Hogan, it was an homage to
him, and then, of course,

you can see Rock's reactions.

[crowd cheers]

[Kane] I'll see you guys out
there.

[Michael] No sibling rivalry in
WWE history has been more

volatile, more heinous, more
destructive than that of Kane

and his older brother,
The Undertaker.

In their many battles over the
years, the Deadman would come

out on top over his younger
brother.

[bell rings]

[Jim] Rest in peace, Kane.

[crowd yells "One, two, three"]

[Michael] But in 2010, Kane was
the World Heavyweight Champion.

He hoped to shift the tide

as The Undertaker sought
his brother's gold.

[Undertaker] You are not worthy
to carry that championship.

[Kane] You're living in a
fantasy, big brother.

The reality is I am now the
dominant brother.

[Michael] At Night of Champions,
the satanic siblings would once

again come to blows in a No
Holds Barred match.

No Holds Barred, ladies
and gentlemen.

Anything goes in this matchup
for the World Title.

[bell rings]

[Michael] Undertaker wasting
little time

going after his brother, Kane.

[Undertaker] Many props as Kane
gets, he's underrated.

And now in 2010, during that
run, he was a menace.

[Matt Striker] A diseased soul
has ravaged Kane

and turned him into a bitter
and jealous man.

[Jerry] He's more of a monster.

[Booker T] Undertaker was always
here,

but Kane definitely rose to
that same level.

When I think of these two guys,

there was nothing
more interesting.

[Michael] Big Boot.

Can he pull this off?

Can Undertaker pull this off?

Going for the Chokeslam.

Going for the Chokeslam.

He does it.

[Jerry] Are we going to have a
new World Heavyweight Champion?

Oh, he got it.

[Michael] Going for the
Tombstone.

Kane, reversal.

[Jerry] Ooh.

[Michael] Reversal by Kane.

Counter by Kane.

[Jerry] Ooh.

[Michael] Tombstone Piledriver.

Kane has defeated his brother.

[Kane] To beat the Undertaker
in, like, a huge match,

now, all of a sudden, it's like,

"Wow, this dude's for real."

Like, for real, for real.

[Jerry] That was the most
impressive match that

I've ever seen Kane ever have.

[Michael] In 2003, when Kane was
forced to unmask and show his

face to the world, it altered
his psyche even further.

[Jerry] Look at that grotesque
face.

I think I just saw somebody
throw up.

[Michael] The tortured soul that
was Kane

became emotionally unstable.

[Jerry] Look out.

[Michael] WWE Announcer Jim Ross
sat down

with the Big Red Monster
to discuss his feelings.

[Kane] This is gasoline, JR.

You make fun of me and I will
set you on fire.

[Michael] Leading to a
destructive rampage.

[Kane] JR, I was a normal,
happy child

until a fire turned me into
a hideous monster.

[Jim] You don't appear to be
scarred or deformed in any way.

[Kane] What are you saying, JR?

Kane basically thinks he has
this horrible physical

deformity, even though he
doesn't.

Look at me, JR. I'm a monster.

Don't you see that?

What he does have, though, is he
has scars on the inside.

[Jim] Kane, I see a man that
needs help.

[Kane] Kane was unhinged.

You-

[Jim] Please.

[Kane] -need to feel my pain.

[Jim] No.

[groaning]

[Kane] And he was diabolical.

Kane was on the loose, and he
was going to do whatever he

wanted, whenever he wanted, to
whoever he wanted.

[Speaker] Don't do it.
Don't do it.

[Jerry] Oh, no.
Good God.

[Kane] Fry, you son of a bitch.

Fry.

[screaming]

[Chris Van Vliet] This is one of
those moments

where you're like, this seems a
little too real.

Kane set Jim Ross on fire.

[Jerry] Somebody help him.

[Jim] It was a very volatile
burn.

It got hot quick.

[Jerry] Somebody get somebody in
there.

[Carmelo Hayes] It was one of
those wrestling things that,

as a kid, you had to
sit back and go,

"Did that- did that
really happen?

Did he really set him on fire?"

[Speaker] Are you okay, JR?

JR. JR. Guys, we need help.

Get some help.

[Michael] The Devil's Favorite
Demon was always

competing at a high level and
mastered many match types.

[Jim] Kane wins the
Ambulance Match.

[Michael] The Inferno Match.

[Vince] Look at him.

[Michael] The rules are simple,
folks.

You lose when you can set your
opponent on fire.

[Jerry] Oh.

[Michael] The Hell in a Cell
Match.

[Jerry] Oh.

[Jim] He just got dropped on his
head.

[Michael] But how would Kane
fare in a Money in the Bank

Ladder Match?

In 2010, we'd all find out.

[Matt] That briefcase guarantees
the victor a championship

opportunity anytime up
to one year.

[Michael] Oh no, no, no.

Oh.

[Kane] I was always the one that
could use the ladder as a tool.

I was the one that could
cause a lot of havoc

when I was in there.

[Michael] Kane sends McIntyre to
the mat below.

[Matt] Kane has earned the
contract for a championship

match anytime up to one year.

[Kane] Usually, there's this
big, long build-up,

someone's going to cash it in,
and, of course, being Kane,

I had to do things a little
differently.

[Kane's music]

[Michael] Oh, my Lord.

Kane just won the Money in the
Bank about an hour ago.

[Jerry] Rey Mysterio just
finishing the match

of his career.

[Michael] Kane going to cash it
in on a weak Rey Mysterio.

[Chelsea Green] This was the
moment that everyone realized

you don't have to wait a year to
cash in.

[Michael] Chokeslam.

[Chelsea] You can cash in 49
minutes later.

[Michael] Kane.

Tombstone Piledriver.

Kane with the cover.

[crowd yells "One, two, three"]

[bell rings]

[Kane] One of the highlights
of my career.

Anytime that you win a World
Championship,

you're one of the
faces of the company.

That's really something special.

[Matt] Kane is the new world
champion.

[Michael] We have now
reached our number one moment,

and it's one that set more than
just the WWE Universe ablaze.

The sibling rivalry
between half-brothers,

Undertaker and Kane, was
explosive.

[Jim] How much more of this will
The Undertaker take?

[Michael] Literally and
figuratively.

[Kevin Kelly] Maybe not much
more.

[Michael] At the 1998 Royal
Rumble, The Deadman faced

"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn
Michaels in a Casket Match.

[Jerry] What is this?

[Jim] Wait a minute.

They're ganging up on The
Undertaker.

[Michael] Kane decided it was
time to let his older brother

feel the burn.

[crowd cheers]

[Jim] Oh, my God.

It may be Kane.

[Kane's music]

[Jim] There he is.

There he is.

[Jerry] Oh.

[Jim] Kane manhandling anything
that's moving.

[Kane] Everyone thought that I
was there

to save The Undertaker.

In fact, I was there to bury The
Undertaker and end his career.

[Jim] Oh, no.

Kane is assaulting his brother.

[Kane] No one did stuff like
that to The Undertaker.

He was the irresistible force.

[Jim] The Undertaker in the
casket.

Michaels shut the lid.

[Undertaker] Now you've got
somebody

that's eye-to-eye
with The Undertaker.

Even bigger than The Undertaker.

[Jim] They're locking the
casket.

Where are Paul Bearer and Kane
taking The Undertaker?

[Michelle McCool] He's this
crazy big red monster,

and you just didn't know which
way it was going to go.

[Jerry] What is he doing?

[Jim] He's destroying the
casket,

but The Undertaker is
in that casket.

This is nothing but carnage.

[Kane] I don't think the
audience ever believed that,

"Wow, The Undertaker is actually
in trouble."

But with Kane, they did believe
that.

[Jim] And my God, the casket's
on fire.

The casket's on fire.

[Kane] It just took me to a
completely different level.

And now it's like,

"Oh, man, wow,
Kane is like a bad dude."

[Jim] The Undertaker is in the
casket.

[Undertaker] People were
astonished.

"You've set your opponent on
fire."

It's the best story that WWE's
ever told.

[Jerry] I still can't believe
it.

Michael] A creature so
terrifying,

Kane was extracted directly from
your childhood nightmares.

There is no question that The
Big Red Machine

was one of the best
to ever do it.
