- Good day, Leaf, are you ready to have some fun?
- Am I?
Cupcake,
we live in the best kingdom in the whole wide world.
Why, there's so much fun to be had,
I don't think we can ever have it all.
- (chuckles) That's a pretty good problem to have,
I'll tell you that.
- I know, right?
Today's gonna be great, just like every day.
- Oh, that reminds me,
I have an idea for a brand new holiday
that I think trolls all across the kingdom will love.
- A new holiday?
I'm all about it, I love holidays,
tell me more, Cupcake.
- Okay,
the holiday I'm proposing is called Troll Friends Day.
- Troll Friends Day, I have loads of troll friends,
they'd love to have their own day.
- And as their friend, it would be your day too.
- Wow, yeah, my very own holiday,
that's a genius idea, Cupcake.
How do you plan to make it real?
- Well, I'm gonna float the idea
to some of our non-troll friends to see what they think
and make sure they're not bothered by it.
Then, if I get good feedback,
I'll go to King Basil
and petition to have it officially named on our calendars.
- Wow, it's so cool to think that a little troll like you
could change our whole entire kingdom
just based on an idea.
- I know, isn't it wild?
I'm gonna get Fairypie and go ask around,
then we'll play.
- Okay.
(dramatic music)
- Smell that, Thorn.
- Are you cooking sauce again, King Basil?
- No, I'm not cooking sauce,
I'm putting my nose to the wind,
and not liking what I'm smelling.
- Oh, if I may make a suggestion,
George the Blacksmith fashions a fine bronze oil
that doubles as a air freshener.
I could procure some, if your senses require.
- Nay, Thorn, though I appreciate the gesture.
My problem isn't so easily resolved, I'm afraid.
You see, what my senses struggle over
is a wretched kindness that permeates our land.
- Kindness? Despicable!
What's the source of this goodwill, King?
- That's just it, Thorn, I can't pinpoint it.
Citizens smile, residents are content,
even our adversaries seem happy.
- My stomach turns in disgust.
We should identify the source of these pleasantries
and squash it with the force
of a thousand traptalarycon.
- I've considered it, Thorn, trust me,
for goodwill and peace
are the banes of any monarch worth their salt.
- Mm, speaking of salt, and bat wings, and newts,
there is a spell of sorts
that may assuage this vile problem.
- A spell? Do tell.
- There exists in this realm
an obscure spell from our kingdom's dark ages,
one that even I haven't mastered.
It can plunge any land into chaos of ill will,
suspicion, bullying, intimidation,
and ultimately, war.
- That truly sounds like a marvelous spell, Thorn.
What's it known as?
- It's called Troll Net.
- Troll Net? Fabulous.
However can we harness it in this day and age?
- I'll have to research it, King.
The secrets lie within my extensive and arcane volumes.
But know this, once the Troll Net is cast,
there is no going back,
the strife that will overtake our land
shall not be undone by mere mortal hands.
- Sounds like my kinda spell, Thorn.
- I thought you'd feel that way, King.
- Tell me this, Thorn,
how quickly might you acquire this Troll Net?
- As quickly as my fingers
can turn the pages of my books, King.
- Then turn those pages, Wizard.
The sooner we can engineer mayhem across the land,
the sooner we, and we alone, will control this kingdom,
from the highest mountaintops to the lowest valley,
from the brightest sunspot to the darkest shadow.
- Since you put it like that, I'll get right on it.
- Excellent, Thorn!
A kingdom is worth nothing unless one can dominate it.
And goodwill only fosters collaboration, not control.
We shall take what is rightfully ours
and wipe those smiles from the people's faces.
(Thorn laughs)
- I like the way you think, King Basil.
- And I you, Thorn.
When all is said and done,
they will carve our likenesses
in the stone of Mount Wickawack.
- Ooh, splendid.
Might I request they make my nose smaller?
- You don't like your nose?
- It's always been a bit bulbous for my taste.
- Then a stone nose job it'll be, consider it done.
- Thank you, King.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a spell to master.
- Troll Net, oh no!
(adventurous music)
- Good day, Ralph, how are you?
- Oh, I'm okay, Cupcake.
I have a bit of indigestion today.
I think I breathed too much fire last night.
- Yikes, sounds toasty.
- Try some milk, it cures fire indigestion every time.
- Good idea.
Thanks, Fairypie, I'll give it a try.
- Say, Ralph,
I have an idea for a new holiday
I'd like to run by some of my non-troll friends,
you got a second?
- Am I the first non-troll friend you're asking?
- Yes.
- Well, I'm flattered, ask away.
- How would you feel about a new kingdom holiday?
- A new holiday?
I love holidays.
We have so much fun with everyone.
What's it called?
- Well, it'll be called Troll Friends Day.
- Troll Friends Day?
Do you have to be a troll to celebrate it?
- No, you only have to be friends with a troll.
- Oh, I'm friends with lots of trolls.
I love it!
- Awesome.
- Do we exchange gifts on Troll Friends Day?
- We can,
or we can just do something fun with a troll friend.
- Sweet, when is it?
- It doesn't have a date yet, because it's not official,
I'm asking around to get feedback,
and if it's good, I'll take it to King Basil.
- Wow, that's cool, Cupcake.
Good luck.
- Thanks, Ralph, you've always been my favorite dragon.
- And you're my favorite troll.
Hey, if your holiday's a success,
do you think the king would be into Dragon Friends Day?
- There's only one way to find out.
- I guess so, huh?
I'll be watching.
- Okay, come on, Fairypie,
we have lots more friends to talk to.
- Away we go.
- It'll be so cool if Cupcake's idea
gets turned into a kingdom holiday, Belly Rumble.
We'll have another day to celebrate and have fun.
- And eat lots of yummy goodies.
Holiday food's the best.
(Leaf laughs)
- That's right.
- [Willow] Psst, hey, guys, come here.
(adventurous music)
- Hey, Willow, what's up?
- I have something to tell you,
there's gonna be trouble!
- Trouble? What kinda trouble?
- Kingdom trouble.
I overheard King Basil talking with that weird wizard Thorn,
they're up to no good.
- King Basil, up to no good?
That's crazy.
- Yeah, that's bonkers, Willow.
We elected our king, he works for us,
trolls, dragons, lizards, and wizards.
- Well, somebody needs to remind him of that.
They're up in the castle cooking up a magic spell
that's gonna bring chaos and conflict to the kingdom.
- Chaos and conflict?
But why in the world would our king wanna do that?
- So he can seize greater control of the land
and everyone in it!
He's on a power trip!
- Power trip?
Like the ones we get from the hardware store?
- No, those are power strips, Belly.
- Oh, that kinda sounds like a yummy snack, don't you think?
- Listen, there's some time, but not much.
Thorn has to study the spell.
Apparently, it's old and nasty.
- Okay, how do you wanna handle it?
- Uh-uh, not me, how do you wanna handle it?
- What do you mean, Willow?
Don't you wanna help the kingdom and stop them?
- Golly, no,
I wanna go float in the Salamic Stream
up in the Catirondack Mountains.
I'm going on vacation.
- Vacation?
When the kingdom's in peril?
- It does sound like fun.
Hey, Willow, can I tag along?
- No, you're with me, Belly.
Willow, come on, man,
it sounds like we'll need all the help we can get.
- I'm sorry, Leaf, I just thought you'd wanna know.
I don't have the stomach for fighting,
I like to laugh, and play, and nap.
- Oh, I love napping.
We oughta hang out sometime.
- Absolutely, Belly Rumble.
I'll call you when I get home.
- If there's a home to come back to.
- That's the craziest thing I've ever heard.
What's Willow thinking spreading nasty rumors like that?
- He seemed pretty sure of what he said, Cupcake,
and he's never lied to us before.
- But it's King Basil he's talking about.
You mean to tell me our king says one thing to the citizens,
then does the opposite behind closed doors?
- I know it sounds crazy, but...
- It is crazy!
You're telling me everything's been so nice
and everyone's been so happy
that it upsets the king?
- I know, it doesn't make sense, but...
- It doesn't make sense.
Willow must be loopy on stream water.
- He seemed scared to me.
- Then why not go to the authorities,
to someone who can really help?
Why tell the littlest trolls you can find?
Have you thought about that?
- Well, no.
- Because he's playing a joke, that's why,
and a bad one at that.
- You think so?
- I know so.
If there's one person we can all trust, it's the king.
We elected him after all,
why in the world would he betray us?
- I don't know, I hear that power corrupts.
- Well, it doesn't corrupt King Basil.
I think that Willow's the untrustworthy one.
And he's running away to boot,
it sounds like he's playing a prank.
- Yeah, but, what if he's not?
(upbeat music)
- Thank you for visiting, King Basil,
it's an honor to host you.
- It's an honor to be invited, Cupcake.
Rumor has it you've got some good ideas.
- Yeah, there's all kinds of rumors going around.
- There are?
Well, I'd love to hear them.
(Cupcake clears throat)
- King Basil,
I have an idea for a brand new kingdom holiday.
I asked around and got nothing but kind words and support.
- Oh, I so enjoy the kindness
that permeates our kingdom, Cupcake.
The joy and smiling faces that greet me daily
make my throne a truly magical seat on which to sit.
Tell me, what is this holiday you propose?
- I call it Troll Friends Day.
- Troll Friends Day?
How absolutely wonderful.
- You think so?
- I do.
You trolls are some of the friendliest,
most gregarious creatures
I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
And if you've cornered adequate public support,
I'd be happy to grant you your new holiday.
- You would?
Oh, King Basil, I'm so happy.
Thank you so, so much.
- Don't mention it, Cupcake.
One of the perks of my position
is hearing so many new ideas
from so many different subjects,
and seeing so much beaming joy
when I feel the same excitement they feel.
- By golly, it's like magic, isn't it?
- Why, yes, yes, it is, Belly Rumble.
I'll tell you what,
give me some time to organize my thoughts
and develop a formal plan for our new holiday,
then we'll meet at my castle to finalize everything
and issue a formal announcement.
How does that sound?
- It sounds wonderful, King,
thank you so much again.
Gosh, you're the best king any troll could ever ask for.
- Well, ask and you shall receive, Cupcake,
ask and you shall receive.
(adventurous music)
- I knew King Basil was a good king, Fairypie,
I just knew it,
that weirdo Willow is the one who can't be trusted.
- It's mighty strange of him
to tell a tale that tall though,
don't you think?
Our king conspiring with an evil wizard to destroy goodwill?
It's downright fantastical.
- Yes, it is, but Willow's always been a bit odd.
The good thing is, we've exposed his lies,
and we're about to get a brand new holiday
commemorating the remarkable friendships of trolls.
- Hip hip...
- Hooray!
- Hooray!
(dramatic music) (wind howls)
- I'll tell you, Chomps,
I've never felt so disgusted in all my life.
It was all I could do to not vomit right there on the spot.
- I don't blame you, King Basil,
those trolls are repugnant little things.
- Yeah, stinky too, smells funny in that place.
Probably the dreadful porridge they eat. (gags)
- Mm, porridge.
I've gotten my snout in a time or two,
some of it's not so bad.
- Well, if I have my way,
they'll live on a prisoner's diet of bread and water.
- More porridge for me. (laughs)
- If you like.
Now listen, Chomps, I need your help.
- Anything, King, you just name it.
- Once Cupcake arrives for what she thinks
is the inauguration of her stupid holiday,
I'm going to imprison that little troll.
Thorn and I need a bit more time
to perfect the Troll Net spell.
Once we do,
we can effectively end friendship throughout the kingdom.
- End friendship?
You mean that it'll be every mouse for himself?
Dog eat dog, fly or fall, do or die?
- That's right,
no camaraderie, no neighborliness,
no sharing, no joy!
- Oh, that's, that's, that's awesome!
(King Basil laughs)
- I knew you'd see it my way, Chomps.
You should've been born a rat,
you're too good for those mice.
- I am?
Awe, King, I'm touched,
no one's ever said that to me before.
- Then I suppose no one offered you
a spot beside the throne either?
- No.
- Well, how about it?
- You mean...
- I'd like to offer you a seat in the court, Chomps.
And just as soon as we crush friendship,
you'll have one, if you want it.
- If I want it?
Of course I want it.
Thanks, King.
- Don't thank me, give yourself a pat on the back,
you're the kind of mouse every king should have.
You're savage, brutal, vicious, selfish, and conniving,
all admirable traits,
I'd be proud to have you sit beside me.
- Ain't this something?
From lowly dungeon mouse to the king's court.
To think, my pa said I'd never amount to nothing.
- How is your pa anyway?
I haven't heard from him in quite a while.
- Still holed up in the wall, I guess.
Maybe he passed, I don't know.
- Mm, one of the unpleasant realities of ruling a kingdom.
Speaking of which, once we lock up Cupcake,
her ridiculous Troll Friends Day idea
will vanish along with her,
and anyone who tries pushing for it in her wake
will suffer the same consequence.
(Chomps laughs)
- I like your style, King Basil.
- So do I, Chomps, so do I.
You stand by until Cupcake arrives.
Then, once we have her, you stand guard.
- Oh, I'll make sure she stays locked up tight,
in as much to spare as possible.
- Excellent.
(tranquil music)
- I couldn't believe how excited King Basil was
to create Troll Friends Day.
He was smiling from ear to ear.
He's always been so kind.
- I wonder why the castle's so far from town?
Wouldn't you think he'd wanna be closer to his subjects?
- He probably enjoys the peace and quiet.
Even kings need a rest once in a while.
- Well, I guess you're right.
It's getting cold, I should've brought a coat.
- The trees are getting taller and throwing more shade,
it's still warm in the sunshine.
- Cupcake?
- Yes, Fairypie?
- What if Willow wasn't lying?
- About King Basil?
Nonsense.
You saw for yourself, he was so happy to see us,
and utterly overjoyed to help.
- I know, that's what I'm wondering.
Do you think he was maybe too happy?
- How can we ever be too happy, Fairy?
- When we're faking it.
- Well,
I don't think there's anything fake about King Basil.
Come on, the castle isn't far now.
(dramatic music)
- Look around us, Chomps,
what a marvelous dungeon my castle has.
I regret not using it enough.
- You got that right, King Basil.
Of all the dungeons in all the kingdoms,
I'm proud to serve in yours.
- Just you wait, Chomps,
as soon as we're free of kindness and camaraderie,
and we've squashed the idea of friendship celebrations,
what a truly majestic land this will be.
- I can't wait.
- Nor can I.
Once we cast the wizard Thorn's Troll Net,
we will surely go down
as the most feared and revered kingdom in history.
(Chomps laughs)
- [Cupcake] Hi, King Basil, we're right on time.
- Why, yes, you certainly are, Cupcake.
- Have you set a date yet for the first Troll Friends Day?
I'd love to know when it'll be
so I can start telling all my friends in the kingdom,
trolls or not.
- As a matter of fact, I haven't set the date.
- And he's not gonna.
- What? Why?
Did somebody object?
- Oh no, Cupcake, that's Chomps the Dragon Mouse.
He's notorious for stealing food
and damaging property throughout the countryside.
- That's right, Fairy,
and now, you can add king's lieutenant to my list of titles.
- What's the meaning of this, King Basil?
- There's no point in continuing this charade, Cupcake,
you and your fairy friends
may as well make yourselves comfortable,
you are going to be here a while.
- What do you mean?
What is this?
What's happening?
- They're in cahoots, Cupcake,
and they're taking us prisoner.
- What?
But...
- But nothing, troll.
You can kiss your friends goodbye,
you can kiss your holiday goodbye,
and very soon, you can kiss your kingdom goodbye.
- I'm sorry it had to happen like this, Cupcake.
Your naive idealism was oddly impressive,
if somewhat sickening.
In another life,
I'd have been proud to have a daughter just like you.
- [Chomps] Really?
- In another life, not this one.
- [Chomps] Oh, okay.
- [King Basil] Don't be silly,
in this life, she's a lowly troll,
unworthy of even our castle's table scraps.
- Mm, table scraps, I haven't even considered those,
you got any?
- Soon, Chomps, soon.
- But why, King Basil?
What did we do to deserve this?
- That's just it, my dear, you didn't do anything.
It's easy enough to keep power in check
within a constitutional monarchy,
yet you and your precious troll friends
would rather laugh and play,
exercising flights of fancy
over protecting your rights as citizens.
Henceforth, your kingdom is no more.
- Kiss life as you knew it goodbye, troll.
(Chomps laughs)
- Oh no!
Fairypie, what will we do?
- I'm afraid there's nothing we can do, Cupcake,
it's too late now.
(adventurous music)
- Hi, you're Thorn, right?
- Who wishes to know?
- I'm Leaf.
- And I'm Belly Rumble, friends call me Belly.
- Well, Belly Rumble,
what brings you to the king's water tunnels?
Are you trying to steal your way into the castle?
- Steal?
No, we're not thieves.
- We're here because the king invited us,
we just got lost is all.
Do you know where the meeting is being held?
- Meeting? What meeting?
- The Troll Friends Day announcement meeting.
- Oh, that, it's been canceled.
- What?
- Yeah, since when?
- Since I said so.
Don't get pushy with me, imp.
- Sorry, Thorn, we don't mean to be impolite,
it's just that King Basil was excited about the new holiday
and asked us to come to the castle to help plan it out.
- Well, something else has come up.
- Something like an evil spell?
- What did you say?
- Nothing, just gibberish.
You know how imps are, can't take them anywhere.
- Your little friend has a big mouth, troll.
I'd be careful who it shot off to if I were you.
- Oh, yeah.
- Belly, come on, let's go.
Sorry to bother you, Thorn, it won't happen again.
- You'd best hope not, you troll, for both your sakes.
- I can't believe you said those things
to Thorn's face, Belly.
What if he'd gotten angry
and cast a spell on us right then and there?
- Meh, I bet that old wizard
couldn't cast his way out of a wet, pointy hat.
(dramatic music)
- I tell you, Basil,
I nearly cast a spell that banished the both of them
into the Pit of Partically for all time.
- I'm glad you didn't, Thorn,
I want to see every single one of my loyal subjects' faces
when goodwill disappears
and their kingdom is plunged into mayhem and chaos.
- As I do.
And now that you've locked up
that little friendliness shill, Cupcake,
we must act.
We've waited long enough, it's time to cast the Troll Net.
- Excellent.
Where do we begin?
- Where it all began, King,
the first step in harnessing the Troll Net spell
is to travel to the land that time forgot,
the frozen tundra, the unspeakable uplands.
- You mean Jersey?
- No, not Jersey,
I'm talking about Snowland.
- Snowland?
So should we pack warm clothes?
- Yes, yes, the warmer the better.
We'll leave at dusk and journey by cover of night.
Upon our arrival,
I shall recite the dreaded incantation
from my book of spells,
and together, King,
we shall wield the full power and fury
of the dark age's most feared evil spell,
the Troll Net!
(Thorn laughs)
- Do they sell postcards in Snowland?
- I believe so, why?
- It would be amusing to send one home to Cupcake,
like, "Wish you were here".
(King Basil laughs)
(adventurous music)
- I wonder what that creep Thorn
was doing in the castle water tunnels?
- Seems like he knew his way around.
- Yeah, it sure did.
You think it's true, what Willow told us about the king?
- I don't see how we could doubt it at this point, do you?
- No.
I'm afraid our king's up to no good.
And where is Cupcake?
I haven't seen her or Fairypie in a while.
I wonder if they went to the castle?
- Probably, just like we did.
They might have walked right in the front door
and gotten themselves into trouble.
- Oh, I knew we should've gone together, I just knew it!
What do we do now?
Who can help us?
- I know someone who might be able to help.
- You do? Who?
- An old friend of mine, the famed magician Boo Boo Roo.
- Boo Boo Roo?
I never knew you were friends with Boo Boo Roo.
Wasn't he exiled after being caught performing
that phony traptalarycon egg trick out in Carlsbad Caverns?
- He had bills to pay, little purple mouths to feed,
I don't blame him one bit.
- Hey, I'm not judging.
Do you really think he can help us?
- You got any better suggestions?
(adventurous music)
- So tell me, Belly,
how did you and Boo Boo Roo come to be friends anyway?
- I was an apprentice magician for two years
in his traveling sideshow group, The Fantastical Wisps.
- Hold on, hold on,
how is it that I know you as well as I do,
but I've never heard this story?
- Eh, after the troupe got shut down,
I just kinda wanted to put that chapter behind me.
- Why did the troupe get shut down?
- Boo Boo started reading everyone's minds
and found out that nobody was happy with the food,
and we were hungry all the time,
so he got us off the road
and rebranded The Fantastical Wisps
as The Fantastical Crisps Toast Emporium.
We were happy for a while,
and our bellies were certainly full,
til a Trolly's moved across the way
and put us out of business.
Boo Boo lost everything.
- Wow, that's quite a story, Belly.
- Yeah, I fell out of touch with Boo Boo
by the time he started that traptalarycon egg shtick.
He sent a carrier pigeon to reach me a couple of times,
but he was making such bad headlines at that point,
I avoided the whole thing.
- Good move.
- Right?
I'd be living in a cave too.
- Well, if privacy's what he wanted, he sure got it,
get a load of these caves!
- I haven't seen Boo Boo since the Toast Emporium closed.
I wonder if I'll even recognize him?
- Whoa!
- Boo Boo, is that you?
You look different.
- I'm not Boo Boo Roo, I'm a girl,
my name's Bumblestick, friends call me Bumble.
And you are?
- Love-struck, I mean Belly Rumble, friends call me Belly.
- And I'm Leaf, it's nice to meet you, Miss Bumblestick.
- That remains to be seen, troll.
Nobody comes this far into Caveworld
unless they know who they're looking for.
So what do you want?
- We want to see Boo Boo.
- I'm an old friend.
- Boo Boo's old friends always ask for troll bucks,
but he's broke, so you can leave now.
- We're not here for troll bucks.
- We're here to ask Boo Boo for help.
- Help? What kind of help?
- Help with a magic spell.
- Boo Boo doesn't do magic tricks anymore,
and he doesn't teach his secrets to newbie magicians.
Leave, now!
- Wait, we don't wanna learn a spell,
we want to defend ourselves against one.
- Oh? What's the spell?
- We don't know.
- You don't know?
- We know it's bad.
- How do you expect Boo Boo to help you
with a spell you don't even know?
- Boo Boo still reads minds, right?
- Maybe.
- Well, maybe he can look inside us
and find the information he needs
to identify what we're up against.
- Sounds farfetched to me.
- But in theory,
if our heads did hold some shred of information
that we didn't recognize,
he might be able to.
- Right?
- You two smell like hucksters to me.
- Ah, we must stink from the castle's water tunnel.
We don't normally smell bad, honest.
- She means figuratively, Belly.
- No, you guys kinda smell funny.
- Oh.
- Well, then, I guess we'll have to leave.
Shame, we came a really long way to find Boo Boo.
Will you tell him Belly Rumble says hi?
- Not so fast, mister.
- Okay!
- I may not be convinced, but Boo Boo loves stuff like this.
- Really?
- It's the carny in him.
- I was a carny too, I totally understand.
- Then you'll appreciate a riddle.
- A riddle?
Uh, sure.
- Answer correctly and you can see Boo Boo.
- And if we don't answer correctly?
- You can take the long walk back where you came from.
- Deal.
- Deal.
Belly, is this a good idea?
- No, if I know Boo Boo,
his gatekeeper's got a slew of trick questions.
- Then why are we playing into her hands?
- She's cute.
- I don't believe this.
- Okay, okay, let's have it, Bumblestick.
- Alright, what goes up but never comes down?
- We could grow old trying to guess this, Belly.
- That's it!
- What?
- What goes up but never comes down?
Your age.
- Well, I'll be, you're smarter than you look.
Come on, I'll show you to Boo Boo's quarters.
(adventurous music)
- Belly, is that you?
- It's been a long time, Boo Boo.
- Come closer, kid,
these caves do a number on the old eyesight.
- How's this?
- Whoa, 3D ugly.
- Hey!
(Boo Boo chuckles)
- Just kidding ya.
What brings ya after all this time?
You're not looking for troll bucks, are ya?
- No, we don't need troll bucks.
- We need help.
- Whoa, who's there?
- What?
This is my friend, Leaf.
- Oh, I didn't see you there.
Don't scare me like that.
There's people looking for me, ya know?
- He wasn't kidding about the old eyesight.
- Boo Boo, our kingdom's in trouble.
- Oh yeah?
Tell me, who's giving you problems, kid?
- Our king.
- Your king?
You mean the one who sits on the throne
and calls all the shots?
- Yes, that one,
he's planning to use an evil spell
to bring infighting and war to the land.
- Now isn't that something?
You can't even trust your elected officials.
- Shocking, I know.
- What spell's he using?
- Uh, we're not sure.
- You're not sure?
Oh, I get it.
Alright, hold still, I'm going in.
- What?
What does he mean he's going in?
- Shh, don't move, he's in your head.
- In our...
Oh.
(Leaf laughs)
That tickles! (laughs)
- Alright, pull yourself together, softie,
I got some things.
- What did you see, Boo Boo?
- Thorn the Warlock, huh?
That's bad news.
- We figured as much.
- Yeah, but I don't think you figured this much.
Thorn's got in your king's ear,
they're gonna usher in a new dark era
and enslave your entire kingdom.
- Oh no, what can we do, Boo Boo Roo?
- Only light can stop the darkness, kid.
- But we're not wizards.
- And I'm not a magician,
but I still made a good living at it,
until that whole traptalarycon egg fiasco,
I'm still living that one down.
- Boo Boo,
could you see what spell they were planning to use?
- I could, it's bad.
- Bad?
- Real bad.
- Real bad?
- Mm-hmm.
It's called Troll Net, and it's a real doozy.
(dramatic music)
- Here we are, King Basil,
the tippity-top of our world.
Feel the chill.
- I feel it, Thorn, I feel it, I should've brought gloves.
- Balderdash, our power transcends silly weather patterns.
Snow and ice are for the peasants,
we operate among the gods.
- Can gods wear gloves?
- Enough bunkum.
From this plateau, we can implement our magic
and effect the kingdom as we please.
- Excellent, there's a limbo contest in a southern district
that I'd love to disrupt.
- You're thinking small, King.
- It's a pretty big contest, 343 entrants at last count.
- Well, it's nothing compared to
the hundreds of thousands of citizens
who will be snared in our Troll Net.
Think of it, King,
a land beset by strife, conflict, and mayhem.
Rations dwindling, neighborhoods under siege,
trust, a distant memory.
- Sounds heavenly.
- Yes, it does.
Then, at the height of the chaos,
like two glowing champions of peace, we return.
- Ooh!
- Imagine it, the mighty King Basil and Thorn the Warlock
returning from beyond to battle the mad war mongers
and restore order to the land.
The huddled, cowering masses
will flock to us for protection,
and we'll imprison those running wild in the streets.
We'll build slave labor for our prison industrial complex
and recreate a docile, subservient, fearful populace
in one fell swoop.
- Masterful.
- Now's the time, King, there can be no more delay.
I've pored over the pages of the Troll Net spell
and am ready to unleash its full power and fury
on our unwitting kingdom.
- Wait, our kingdom?
- Yes, our kingdom.
Those unruly, unkempt, undeserving peasants
who smother our land like a rash.
- Right, I know what you're saying,
but, I'm the king, you know?
There's only one king.
- Yes, you're the king,
and my magic will ensure that you are revered
as the mightiest monarch ever.
Together,
we shall rule over the new kingdom with iron fists.
- Cold iron fists, I really wish I'd brought my gloves.
- Soon, King,
you can warm your hands by the flames of anarchy
that rage from our crumbling kingdom.
- Let's focus on the rebuild, yeah?
- As you wish,
the flames raging in the stuffed fireplaces
of our rebuilt kingdom.
- My rebuilt kingdom.
- Your rebuilt kingdom,
the greatest kingdom
ruled by the greatest king the world has ever known.
- I like that, I like that a lot.
- I knew you would.
Come now, it's time.
On your command,
I shall unleash a spell
with the force of a thousand amuck stallions.
Then, we'll travel back home to enjoy the carnage firsthand.
Just say the word.
- You mean like a secret password?
- No, no, just give the order.
- We're ordering food?
They deliver takeout all the way up here?
- No, is the cold freezing your brain?
Tell me when to cast the dreaded Troll Net.
- Oh, right, cast the net.
(adventurous music)
- Troll Net sounds horrible!
We have to make sure it's never used on our kingdom,
the lives of all those we love hang in the balance.
- True that, kid.
Real magic takes a lotta effort, you know?
I don't know how some guys do it day in and day out.
- Hey, Bumblestick, before we say goodbye,
would you like to join me for a globshake sometimes?
- Are you asking me out?
- Yeah.
- Alright.
- Well, think it over and...
Wait, really?
- I said alright, didn't I?
When?
- Uh, let me clean up this evil spell thing
we've got going on,
then, I'll swing by,
if Boo Boo lets me remember where you are.
- Don't worry, Belly, I won't erase your memory.
This kid, I swear.
Come on, I'll show you guys out.
I can see that you guys aren't ready
to take on this Troll Net thing by yourselves,
so I'll make a telepathic call to my buddy.
- Who's your buddy?
- His name's Sage, you'll know him when you see him.
- Thanks a bunch, Boo Boo.
- Don't sweat it, kid, us carnies gotta stick together.
- Can I be a carny too?
- No.
- No.
- Okay, okay.
- Sorry, bud, there's rules.
- Hey, speaking of rules, can we ask one more favor?
- I already told ya, I got no troll bucks.
- No, it's not that, it's our friends, Cupcake and Fairypie.
- Right, we're afraid something might have happened to them.
- The last we heard,
they were on their way to King Basil's castle.
If everything we're hearing is true,
he might be holding them prisoner.
- Yeah, he might.
Hold still, I'll take a peek.
Yeah!
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
Oh, yeah, that dungeon's nasty.
- They're in a dungeon?
- They were, I just sprang them.
- You did?
Just like that?
- Yep, I teleported them to Snowland.
Your gang needs to get after
that king and his warlock on all sides.
Back 'em into a corner and hit 'em with good cheer,
you can break that evil spell.
- Thanks a million, Boo Boo.
- Now, the time it took ya to say thanks,
you could've flown 10 feet.
Get outta here!
- We're going.
- And dress nice when you come pick up my Bumblestick,
or else I might snap my fingers
and send ya to a traptalarycon cave.
- I'll dress nice, Boo Boo, I'll dress nice.
(adventurous music)
- I can't believe it, Fairypie,
how in the world did we get out of that dungeon?
- It had nothing to do with the world, Cupcake.
Some otherworldly being cast a magic spell that freed us.
- A magic spell?
It must've been some spell,
I've never experienced anything like that before.
One minute,
we were in the cobwebs being yelled at by that nasty mouse,
and the next, we're walking out here, in the ice and snow.
Where are we anyway?
- This is the Snow Forest.
- The Snow Forest?
I wonder why we're here?
- There's surely a reason.
Whatever spell allowed us to escape the king's dungeon
also wanted us out here, for something.
- Hello there, it's not often I see a troll out here,
and, uh, whatever you are.
- Bah!
- Haven't you ever seen a fairy before,
Mr. whatever you are?
- Ha!
- Pluck's my name, I'm a wild mushroom,
and this is my native soil.
- Well, we don't see any soil, all we see is snow.
- It's under there, trust me.
- That's just it, Pluck, we don't know who to trust,
we were tricked and locked up by our own king!
- That sounds dreadful.
- It was.
- Who's the magician then?
- What do you mean?
- Well, you say you were locked up,
now, you're all the way out here,
which is, like, a year-long hike,
if you travel the way you two are,
so, there's magic at play.
- You're mighty smart, for a wild mushroom, Pluck.
- I've seen it before.
Not many faces visit Snowland,
unless they're banished, or on the run, or teleporting.
- We might all be three.
- Now that I've never seen before,
and I would keep going if I were you.
- What makes you say that?
- Us mushrooms are highly tuned into our land,
and I've been feeling some bad vibrations under the ice.
There's a storm a coming, a bad one,
better stick around, hibernate if you can.
I have some warm leaves you can wrap yourselves in,
if you like.
- But we have friends back home in our kingdom who need us.
The king's turned on his own people!
- Oh, dirty business, I don't envy you lot.
- Neither do I.
I just don't get it,
only a day ago, our lives were so wonderful,
now look at the mess we're in.
- We have to stay strong, Cupcake,
for those that are left behind.
We must.
- (chuckles) It sounds to me like you girls plan to fight.
- That's right, we do.
Our king may have given up on us, but we'll never give up.
And there's a kingdom full of good trolls, and fairies,
and countless other creatures who don't have a voice,
and who might not even know the trouble that's coming.
We'll fight for every one of them
until their kingdom is safe again,
or until we find a new kingdom, whichever comes first.
- I do believe you're starting to show
the makings of a great leader, Cupcake.
- That she is.
- Pa-lease, I'm just a little troll girl
trying to find her way home again.
- If we still have a home to go back to.
- Ladies, if I may,
the Snow Forest is home of many mystical,
magical, marvelous beasts of myriad persuasions.
Take a look at me, for instance,
I'm just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Forgive me if I'm wrong,
but you seem to be fighting a battle that's unclear.
I believe our resident caterpillar, Grub Head,
can bring the perils you face into clearer focus.
He can be cantankerous at times, but he's not unfair.
If you're interested in meeting him,
I could show you the way.
(adventurous music)
- Belly Rumble and Bumblestick,
Belly and Bumble,
B and B, the Killer Bs,
Bellystick,
Bumble Rumble.
Hey, that rhymes. (chuckles)
- You're obsessing over that girl, Belly.
- What?
Obsessing? Me?
No.
You think so?
- Yeah.
Watch out, the terrain gets tricky up ahead.
- I see.
Look at that turret.
Don't stand under it, Leaf,
it looks like it might come down any second.
- Gotcha.
Hey, look right beside it, is that...
- Oh, wow.
Come on, let's go see.
- Excuse me, are you Sage?
- I am indeed.
- Oh, wow, a talking tree.
- You must be Leaf and Belly Rumble, correct?
- That's right, Boo Boo Roo sent us.
- Ah, yes, he alluded me to your imminent arrival.
He's one of the good ones, Boo Boo.
- He sure is.
That's my boy right there, we go way back.
I could tell you mad stories.
- Calm down, Belly.
- Ah, alright.
- I understand you boys are in quandary.
- You could say that.
- Yeah, our king's teamed up with a bad warlock
to turn against his own people
using an evil spell called Troll Net.
Our kingdom's survival is in jeopardy.
- Well, that sounds like quite the predicament.
- Tell us about it.
- Okay, where would you like me to begin?
- Um, that was just figurative,
you don't have to, you know, tell us about it.
- Unless there's something to tell,
maybe we don't know what we think we know.
- What do you know?
- About what?
- Belly, come on.
- You'll have to forgive me,
my mind operates on the literal plane.
If you ask me a question,
I can only answer in the most direct way possible.
- Gotcha.
Sage, is there anything we can do
to break or reverse the Troll Net?
- Only light can pierce darkness.
- Um...
- And only love can trump hate.
- Hmm, that sounds familiar.
- The leader who chooses war over peace is but a follower.
- Oh.
- And the strength you seek already lies within.
- I understand.
- You do?
- Not really, no.
- Is that all you have to tell us, Sage?
- That is all you need to know.
(Leaf sighs)
(adventurous music) - Great.
- Oh, Fairy, I do hope this Grub Head is nice to us.
- What cause would he have to not be?
It's not like he gets a lot of visitors up here,
he'll probably appreciate the company.
- Maybe he'll be able to
shed some light on what's happening.
- At this point, Cupcake, we've got nothing to lose.
- Except the only home we've ever known.
- Hold it right there,
what do you think you're doing,
leaving all those dirty troll prints in a fresh-fallen snow?
- So much for being nice.
- Excuse us, Mr. Grub Head, we don't mean to intrude.
- Then why are you intruding?
- Your friend, Pluck, told us that we might...
- My friend? Pluck?
Pluck's not my friend, he's a fungus,
an afternoon snack, should I grow hungry enough.
Why do you think he's called Pluck?
As it is, I loathe mushrooms and avoid them like the plague,
but I've chosen to allow a select few to inhabit my tundra.
In the event of a total icecap freeze-over,
I'll need to cull sustenance from any available source,
and that is a basis of the truce
between the mushrooms and myself.
- Oh.
Well, I see.
- You, what are you supposed to be?
- Excuse me?
- Did I stutter?
What are you doing out here?
Mosquitoes aren't supposed to like the frigid cold.
- Mosquito?
Do I look like a mosquito?
- Yeah, why else would I be asking?
- Bah!
- Mr. Grub Head, we just...
- Grub Head, it's just Grub Head.
You start tacking mister on everything,
and it only means I have to talk to you longer,
and I'm already sick of your face.
- Well, you don't have to worry
about seeing them any longer.
Come on, Cupcake, let's go.
- No, Fairypie, wait, our kingdom's future depends on this.
You may not welcome our company, Grub Head,
- Now that's an understatement.
- but we never intended to find ourselves here.
- That's right, we're the victims of magic.
- And I might be the victim of those blasted mushrooms,
talking tsetse fly, for crying out loud.
- The ruler of our land, King Basil,
has betrayed his own kingdom
and is preparing to use magic
to harm his loyal subjects far and wide!
- Wait, did you say King Basil?
- Indeed I did.
- The scoundrel,
I actually petitioned his majesty
for admittance to your kingdom some years ago.
I'd far prefer your weather and vegetation
to the frozen folly in which I now find myself.
- Well, you lucked out,
Basil's about to destroy his kingdom
along with everyone and everything in it.
- Hush, horsefly.
Go on, troll, continue.
- Bah!
- Earlier, Basil took us prisoner in his castle dungeon,
but some unknown benefactor's magic spell freed us
and transported us here.
- Oh, lucky me.
- (scoffs) Jerk.
- We'd just like to know how to proceed,
where to go, who to look to for help.
- Okay, hold on now, that's three questions,
way too much discussion.
- Then, can you answer just one for us?
- Ideally, the most helpful one.
- Obnoxious gnat.
- Better than being a tie-dyed worm.
- Why you little...
- Please, Grub Head.
Right now, you're our only hope.
Untold numbers of innocent trolls
are about to be punished for nothing.
Where can we turn for help?
(Grub Head sighs)
- Go find the woodland elves' king.
While I despise elves almost as much as I despise mushrooms,
he's a just monarch and a skilled oracle,
he'll have the answers you seek.
- Oh, thank you, Grub Head, thank you!
- What?
Are you still here?
That's my answer, take it or leave it.
Go on, get, and take that fruit fly with you.
- Eat a snowball, bug breath.
- Come on, Cupcake, let's go.
(adventurous music)
- Belly Rumble, I'm bummed,
I feel like we walked all that way to talk to Sage,
and it was a complete bust.
- I agree.
The strength you seek already lies within?
What in the world does that mean anyway?
- I have no idea, but I don't feel very strong right now,
I'll tell you that.
- Me neither, Leaf.
- This is it, Fairy, the Snowland Castle,
the woodland elves' king must be here somewhere.
- Yeah, but where?
This place is enormous,
a little elf could be hiding in so many different spots.
A crack in the stone, a chip in the ice,
that elf could literally be anywhere.
- Well, there he is.
- Oh, of course.
- Greetings, visitors, welcome to my castle.
I am the woodland elves' king, and who might you be?
- I'm Cupcake, and this is my best friend, Fairypie.
- Hi, we've heard so much about you.
(Elf King laughs)
- Well, all good things, I hope?
- You'd have to sink pretty low to be worse than our king.
- Oh?
- I'm afraid so, which is sorta why we're here.
- I see, tell me then,
what brings you two so obviously-far from your homeland
to the very farthest reaches of the planet itself?
- We're so glad you asked, Woodland Elves' King.
- The ruler of our beautiful land, King Basil,
has turned on us.
- Oh no!
- He's teamed up with a nasty little warlock named Thorn,
and...
- Excuse me, Fairy, but did you say Thorn the Warlock?
- Yes, do you know him?
- I'm afraid so.
- That's great!
- On the contrary, it's anything but.
- But if you two know each other,
perhaps you could contact him
and put in a good word for the citizens of our poor kingdom?
- Unfortunately, young troll, there's no talking to Thorn.
I should know, I tried for many years,
until one unlucky day in the woods,
when that warlock ambushed my platoon.
- Oh.
- Though we fought valiantly,
my troops and I were no match
for that little wizard's dark magic.
- You mean, Thorn defeated your whole army by himself?
- Worse than that.
- Worse than that?
What could be worse than that?
- He used his powers to turn all of us into,
into woodland elves.
- Oh no!
- Oh no!
- The very thought of it pains me to this day.
We were men and women,
the best and the boldest soldiers our land had to offer,
all reduced to minuscule elves
at the snap of that bearded monster's fingers.
- Oh, dear, I'm so sorry.
- That's just dreadful.
- Indeed.
I've been trapped in this body since that day,
along with all of my former troops.
- What became of your land?
- If Thorn is involved,
then I'm sure my old land has become your land.
- Oh no!
- Oh no!
- So, you see, if it's Thorn you're fighting,
your battle may already be lost.
- No,
we will never surrender to the likes of Thorn the Warlock,
even if our beloved king now joins him.
We're trolls!
- And fairies.
- And a whole lot more, our people are noble.
- And brave.
- [Cupcake] And kind.
- [Fairypie] And good.
- And we won't go down without a fight.
- And if that attitude proves to be your undoing?
- How can fighting against villainy ever be wrong?
- I used to feel the same way,
and look what happened to me.
Since then,
I've pondered other ways
of waging battles and righting wrongs.
- Other ways?
What other ways? (dramatic music)
- King Basil, there is great cause for alarm!
The forces of good are uniting,
we must stop them in their tracks,
with mighty savagery and furious wrath,
before they have the chance to rise up against us.
- Who? Where?
I'll stomp them out where they stand!
Nothing will stop the dawn of my awesome new kingdom.
- My magical sixth senses have identified them all,
your kingdom's subjects are among them,
including our precious escaped prisoners,
Cupcake and Fairypie.
- Cupcake and Fairypie?
They'll pay for this,
I'll recapture them and see to it
they are imprisoned for eternity.
- Old enemies of mine are also in the picture,
so you see, it's very much us against them, King.
- Let's wipe them out now, Thorn,
before they have a chance to gain any more momentum.
- What a devilishly-delectable idea.
I'll teleport you into their midst at once.
Ambush them,
and use our element of supernatural surprise
to crush their fledgling uprising.
- Yes, send me, Thorn, send me!
I will make them wish their troll mothers
never met their troll fathers.
They'll quake in our shadows forevermore.
I will see to it those peasants never forget
the name of King Basil and Thorn the Warlock!
(whoosh)
Aha!
Cease your futile actions and surrender,
you weaselly rebels,
or face the wrath of
a thousand vengeful wraiths from beyond!
- That's it? Only a thousand?
- I'd have thought that that sniveling Thorn
snuggled in your crown,
you'd have more minions at your disposal than that, King.
- Ha!
All I need to squash this puny rebel alliance
is the power of one,
and you're looking at him.
- That's funny.
- Uh, what are you supposed to be?
Garden gnome?
- Oh, very good, I haven't heard that one before.
In truth, I'm your peer, Basil.
- Yeah, meet our newest friend, the woodland elves' king.
- And he can't wait to celebrate Troll Friends Day.
- A king?
What sort of king looks the way you do?
I'll drop you outside my castle gate
to shoo the groundhogs away.
- And you'd have no groundhogs from that point on,
because woodland elves get the job done,
unlike you, Basil.
- Mind your tongue, puppet,
before I take my whittler to you.
- King Basil, that's quite enough,
we've stood, and hovered, by while you've insulted,
intimidated, and imprisoned us and our friends long enough.
- Yeah!
- Once upon a time, you were a good king.
- Yeah, I mean, I guess.
- You held the respect and admiration of your subjects
and the trust and belief of creatures all across our land.
- I won't argue with you there, Cupcake.
- But something happened,
something regrettable, and you changed,
you're no longer the king we chose to lead us.
- No!
- To keep us safe at night.
- No!
- To secure a prosperous future for our loved ones.
- Wait, you guys wanna prosper too?
- Of course we do, we all do,
but not in greedy, conniving, self-serving ways.
We want to work hard for a well-kept kingdom
that provides safety and comfort for us
and all those we care about.
- Yeah!
- We want to share smiles, not frowns.
- Yeah!
- Laughter, not tears.
- Yeah!
- And love, not hate.
- Love trumps hate.
- Okay, will you stop?
I'm listening.
- Good, because if there's one thing
you haven't done a lot of in a long time,
it's listen.
We used to have access to you at any time,
day or night, remember those days?
You used to go house to house
reading bedtime stories to the children,
for crying out loud.
That was the kind of king we nominated
to sit on our kingdom's throne.
You were a strong king, and those who needed to feared you,
but you also cared, and it showed,
and those who needed to loved you.
And I liked to think that you loved us right back,
but I guess I was wrong.
- Yeah.
- That's checkmate, homie.
- No, I don't believe this.
That giant rube can't even bully a group of trolls,
fairies, and elves.
Do they think my third eye
can't see exactly what's going on at all times?
Do I have to do everything myself?
No matter, I'll show them,
I'll show them all.
They think they've had it rough now,
I'm just getting started.
(Thorn laughs)
- I don't know what to say, Cupcake.
- Say you're sorry.
- And say you'll stop what you're doing
and let us be happy again.
- Or just say, "Shut up, Cupcake, you're under arrest."
- Yeah, wait, what?
- I'm tired of fighting, King Basil,
and I'm tired of being betrayed
by those who I thought cared for me.
I've met some nice friends on this journey,
and some interesting characters, to say the least.
- (scoffs) Yeah, how about that Grub Head thing?
Come on.
- But all of it only affirms my position
that there are good creatures out there,
and they're everywhere.
Everyone wants to be happy
and share time with those they care about
and those who care about them.
If that's somehow unacceptable under the new kingdom rules,
then so be it,
I'll be the first one back in that dungeon,
because I don't wanna live in a land
that's lost its moral compass!
- Hang on,
I'm not sure I wanna go back to that dungeon though.
Remember how that place smelled? (gags)
- Cupcake...
- Stop, don't say anything.
I think I'd like to remember the King Basil
who helped me carry my books home
from troll school that rainy Monday,
who repaired the window in our cave
before that big snowstorm,
who pinned the Medal of Service on my dad
for never missing a morning of kingdom trash collection.
What I don't want to remember is this big impostor
towering over us with his scowly face,
who calls himself King Basil,
but behaves just like a petty monster.
- Nuff said.
- Yeah, mic drop.
- Cupcake, you're right, you're right about everything.
I've acted horribly, destroyed the public's faith in me,
betrayed the kingdom, and made a mockery of the throne,
there's no excuse for what I've done.
- I'll second that.
- I don't know what's gotten into me,
dark magic, weakness of character, midlife crisis,
or did I just drink spoiled milk?
I don't fully understand it myself,
but your words, they cut me like a tundra tiger's tooth,
and all I can do is apologize,
and hope that, in time,
I can rebuild the trust you all had in me.
(upbeat music)
- You know what?
You're a lousy bad guy, pal.
Get back to that kingdom and serve those citizens, Basil.
- Yeah, do what you do best.
- What do you say, Cupcake?
- I say, I'm behind you 100%, King!
- Hooray!
- I've been terrible to you all,
and to our wonderful kingdom,
I give you my solemn word right now
to do my very best to make amends,
no matter how long it takes.
- I believe you, King,
I don't know why, but I believe you.
(Cupcake chuckles)
(Fairypie chuckles)
- Cupcake!
- Cupcake.
- Hey, guys.
- Warble says hi, Cupcake.
- Well, hi to you too, Warble.
Did I miss anything exciting?
- Did you ever, where have you been?
- Well, I've been talking with the king.
- You mean...
- Not King Basil?
- Mm-hmm, King Basil.
- Whoa, am I missing something here?
- (chuckles) You're missing a lot.
Don't worry, I'll explain everything.
- Please do!
- One of the most important lessons I learned is,
no matter what,
the truly valuable things in this life
are friendship and love.
They're strong enough to conquer anything.
- Uh, okay, I mean, yeah, I would agree with that.
- And only light can penetrate the darkness.
- Hey.
- Who have you been talking to?
- Warble agrees.
Yahoo!
- King Basil, how long have you been waiting here?
- Not long, Cupcake.
I came because I couldn't stop thinking about
what you said out there in Snowland.
- Which part? (laughs)
- All of it.
I'd like to apologize again for my many misdeeds.
They're inexcusable,
yet you found it within yourself to excuse me,
and for that, I am humbled.
- I'm just happy to have our king back.
We all are.
- And he's happy to be back.
Do me a favor, Cupcake,
I'd like you to gather your closest friends,
I wish to apologize to each of them personally
for making them lose faith in the throne.
