Well, I was just hoping she wouldn't

being taken away in cuffs.

It's a busy holiday
weekend in Bermuda,

and police constables
Holly Lavigne-Smith

and Raeshaun "Robbie" Robinson

have just begun their shift
in the capital, Hamilton.

We are on patrol
in the central area.

Erm, we're just going to be
responding to any call-outs

from 911, and we'll also be
patrolling the city.

From experience, Officer Holly
knows that any shift with Robbie

will be busier than most, and a
holiday weekend is no exception.

So, when you're sat in briefing
and you get assigned PC Robinson

as your partner, you know

you're going to have
a very active day.

Somehow, like, as police officers,
normally, we have to go

and look for the crime,
Somehow, crime comes to Robbie.

And true to Officer Holly's
prediction,

they're thrown straight
into the thick of it.

I've conducted checks on a vehicle
in front of us,

which reveals that
the owner of the vehicle

has a warrant for their arrest.

On top of the warrant, Officer Holly
also spots another offence.

He's got a left light out.

- That's a reason...
- This one?

That one's got a left
brake light out.

All right.

Good day. Hi, how are you?

Not bad, yourself?

The driver is a young woman,

and it's clear the car
isn't roadworthy.

I am letting you know
that your left brake light is out.

You've also got this mirror out.

- I'm sorry.
- I need you to just
go down and get this fixed.

And I also...

...need you to put on your seat belt.

Have you got your licence with you?

Sorry. Thank you.

Meanwhile, Officer Robbie
is awaiting details

from the control room
about the outstanding warrants.

Yeah, North Shore Road
and East Park Lane.

But their presence becomes
a problem for one of the passengers.

It's OK.

It's a young child, and this is her
first-ever interaction with police.

and I couldn't see

As a mum of a young child herself,
Officer Holly knows

a gentle approach can make
all the difference.

One of our main things
as police officers,

we don't want to scare children.

We want children to be able
to respect us,

see us as role models,

want to approach us
if they're in trouble or in danger,

so, erm, that's always
at the forefront of our mind

when we come into contact
with children.

Always can ask us for help, yeah?

- OK, then.

The nervous child in the car
leaves Officer Holly

thinking carefully
about her next move.

We were waiting to find out
from our operations

whether we were going to need
to arrest the mother

and, I mean,
it's one of those situations

where you're just really hoping that
that doesn't need to happen.

That child was really
traumatised already,

while I was just hoping that we
wouldn't have to...

She wouldn't have to see her mother
being taken away in cuffs.

For less serious offences,

officers aren't required to make
an arrest in the moment.

In Bermuda, it's a very small
island. If we think that

they give us the correct name
and address,

we can knock on her door tomorrow,
or she can come into the station,

then we would use that discretion.

But, for serious offences,
that discretion doesn't apply.

10-5. Did you check for 10-36s
on that, erm,

that traffic stop?

The information comes in
about the offence

and whether an immediate
arrest will be needed.

It's disobeying a sign
restricting for parking, all right?

I...I honestly don't know.

It's going to be a parking ticket
you haven't paid.

Yeah, it's just a parking ticket.

Luckily, it's a minor offence
that the driver can deal with later.

But it's still a warrant, so...

It doesn't say what it is,
but it is $75.

If you already have dealt with it,
they will have a record of it

and at least they'll clear
it from the system from here on.

With the situation resolved,
Officer Holly continues her patrol,

confident that, with Robbie by her
side, the jobs will keep on coming.

In the centre of the island,

police constables Rajiv Bailey
and De Forest Evans

are prepping their police vehicles,

soon to start their shift on patrol.

Heading out today on two wheels
today with the big dogs,

so we're going to have some fun,

try to look at some traffic
offences, see what we can find.

On Bermuda's narrow
and winding roads,

having a more manoeuvrable ride

can sometimes give police officers
the upper hand.

and he has plenty of
personal backup.

My brother's a policeman,
my brother-in-law was a policeman,

er, my daughter's a policewoman,
she's a sergeant.

Erm, I have nieces and cousins
that are on the service as well,

so it's almost like a family affair.

Officer Jason's car
may soon be needed.

The police bikers pull over
a rider up ahead.

out-of-date registration sticker.

an expired sticker.

out of date.

So, you're going to get a ticket
for an unlicenced,

I have driving licence but, er,
not Bermuda licence.

The man holds only a driver's
licence from his home country,

Costa Rica,

and in his two years in Bermuda,
hasn't applied for a local one.

So, you're going to get three

- and unlicensed vehicle, all right?

The fines might be adding up,

but the man's taking it all
in his stride,

and Officer Jason takes the chance
to strike up a conversation.

My mate's always there.

The gentleman, after we stopped him,

he saw that, we were
down-to-earth policemen.

or anything like that,
so his mood lightened up.

It turns out the man
usually takes the bus,

but today he borrowed
his friend's bike to buy groceries.

not to take the bus,

- you get stopped by the police.

He took the chance and the chance
didn't work out for him, you know.

Sometimes, you know, you gamble,
like, the gamble doesn't pay off.

The man does have an ID card -

a requirement to get
a job in Bermuda.

Jeez! Hey, you're making
your life harder

because you don't want to get
your... You've got an ID card.

there's no reason you can't go

tickets as I mentioned, right?

licence, which is $100.

For the unlicenced motorcycle,
it's $250, all right?

and a day before a judge,
is not enough to ruin this bromance.

Officer Holly is on patrol
with Officer Robbie.

Just a few hours into their
predictably busy holiday shift,

the blue lights are already on.

SIREN WAILS

Someone ran the stop...
The, er, traffic light.

It was on red
and he just went straight though.

They're in pursuit of a driver
who they saw dangerously

cut across traffic
and ignore a red light.

As you can see, they're going very
fast, cos we can't get them.

Eventually, they catch up
with the speeding car.

Hotel-5 to Oscar,
traffic stop, 39407.

But the driver has a different
idea about what happened.

It went green, so you went
from the other lane

and cut off the... cut off the...

Hi, hi, how are you?

...the cars that are waiting
in the other lane.

Well, of course they weren't moving,
cos the light was red.

An offence of dangerous driving

means a court summons
and a possible fine.

He was dangerously driving.
He was switching lanes.

He says he didn't go
through a red light,

but Robbie was pretty certain
he had.

He also didn't have a seat belt on,
so if something had happened,

erm, he was going to go through
the windscreen.

But, with the driver denying
everything,

Officer Robbie must ensure
any response is proportionate

to the offence, instead of just
issuing a formal caution.

OK, just hang tight.

Holly, I'm just going to check
the Traffic Code book for that.

I'll do a MAN form if you want.

- Erm...
- Or you want a proper one?

I don't know. I'm not... I'm not
leaning towards that.

OK.

Officer Robbie isn't ready
to let him off that easily.

- Cool.
- That was dangerous...
- Yeah.

...as hell, what he did there.

Finding the appropriate guidance
in the police book

proves somewhat challenging.

Disobeying traffic sign?

Did he go through a red?

I don't know. I can't say that.
But what he did was, he just...

He made that improper turn.

With nothing jumping out,

Officer Robbie refers the matter
up the chain of command.

Hey, Sarge, erm, I have a quick
question for you, right?

I stopped this vehicle, right?

He was in the left lane to go
onto the top of South Road.

However, when he got right there at
the threshold into the right lane,

he immediately cut off the vehicles
in the right lane,

so I'm asking what the offence is.

That's driving in a manner
dangerous, isn't it?

The sergeant confirms that
Officer Robbie is correct to issue

a ticket and summons for court.

And that is exactly why
we contact our sergeants

if we're really
unsure of what to do.

The tricky task of breaking the news
to the driver in denial

falls to Officer Holly.

Let me explain this to you.

So, this is a ticket for, erm,
driving in a dange...

...in a manner dangerous, OK?

This is actually a ticket
to go to court.

It's not admitting to the offence.

You're just saying that you
acknowledge that I'm...

- ...doing it.

OK, thank you.

The driver's attitude has softened,
and he seems to accept his fate.

Despite him facing the hard
reality of a date in court,

now he couldn't be nicer.

Look, look, look, I apologise for,
you know, my actions,

and maybe we can learn from this.

- Thank you, sir.
- I appreciate that. I really do.

But his pleasantries aren't enough
to sway Officer Robbie.

He was being nice in the end
and then did ask us

to kind of give him
a fair warning of it

rather than issue him a ticket
but, erm,

I really have no tolerance for
manner of dangerous driving.

He'll have to go up in front of
a judge and plead guilty

or not guilty, and give
his side of the story.

It's a serious offence.

On the water, coastguard officer
Hugo Benziger is gearing up

to police the bays of Bermuda
for the holiday weekend.

It's all about keeping people safe
and letting them have a good time.

Also on board will be
Private Edward Richardson,

and Corporal Gary Dowling.

Obviously, it's a little more
precarious today.

The weather's a little bit,
er, on the rough and choppy side,

so we're just going to have to make
sure that everybody stays safe.

This is the over-40s boat,
so we're doing good,

we're hanging here,
we're having fun.

It may be choppy weather,
but for the holiday...

so the officers need to make sure
that every boater

has the right safety equipment.

according to the amount of people
that are on the boat at the time.

a big raft-up brings a mass
gathering onto the water.

the proper number of life jackets.

with Officer Hugo showing no mercy

to boaters heading
to the mass mooring.

Yeah, there's, there's two options -

we will do our best.

and dry when we were actually

going in that direction,

I mean, I think that was
the only nice thing to do.

I believe you have to take it easy,
you know?

You're doing your job,
and I have to do the right things.

If I'm not doing the right things,

The helpfulness of the police
in Bermuda

is quite a departure from
his experience back home.

In Costa Rica, the police,
they're different.

We have, like, traffic police...

But I would say they are a little
bit more rude, you know?

We basically lost our... one of our
compatriots' hats right now,

So, we've got to find
a hat somewhere.

Well, the wind's going

OK, we'll go up and down,
do a proper search pattern.

But after ten minutes
of meticulously moving through

the area, the coastguard is forced
to call off the search.

There is another chop, though,
so it may well have...

- Yeah.
- It may have gone under.
- It may... it may have pushed it down.

And then, like you say, we've got
the sea turtles around right now,

- so...
- Yeah.
- They may have grabbed
a hold of it at one point

and thought it was a grassy snack.

With coastguard Edwards's
camouflaged cap meeting a sorry end,

the team return to their work
protecting the boaters of Bermuda.

Officers Holly and Robbie are almost
at the end of their busy shift,

with one final quick job
to squeeze in.

We're on our way to a lady
who has found a lost wallet.

When we get there,
we'll look at the wallet,

we'll look for identification.

Once we've found that,
if they have it,

we will contact the owner

and hopefully be able to
get it back to them.

The owner of the lost wallet
will no doubt want it back

on the holiday weekend, but the
officers can only collect it

if they can find the woman's
address.

- What number house are you?

- Number three?
- Oh, OK.

Well, it might be upstairs.

What seemed like a simple job
may not be as quick as they hoped.

DOORBELL RINGS

- I'm old-school.
- I know.

New information comes in
from the control room.

Where's the...? So the wallet's
still at the gas station?

There's been some miscommunication.

Seems the woman has taken the wallet
back to the petrol station

where she found it,

which means Officer Robbie
and Holly are in the wrong spot.

We're going now to the gas station
to collect the wallet.

- Good afternoon. We had a report
of a lost wallet...
- Yeah.

...at this store.

OK, what... We're coming here
to collect it

so we can take it to the
Hamilton police station.

With the wallet located,
it contains details of its owner.

So, that's him, I guess.

- Oh!
- So... And then there's
a bunch of money in here as well.

OK.

So, we have the wallet.

So, we have an ID.

We're now going to return it
to him, hopefully.

Erm, we're just going to look
inside,

and we have quite a lot of money -

250 in Bermuda dollars.

So, the fact that someone's
found this wallet

and there's still $250 in there

shows that the community
in Bermuda's very trustworthy.

- It's actually really nice.
- Mm-hm.

- I mean, he might've had
£1,000 in there.
- Mm!

Whatever the amount,
it's a potentially happy ending.

It's always nice that
we're knocking on a door

to give some good news, because,
unfortunately, a lot of the time,

police officers are
knocking on your door

to give you some bad news.

So, this one.

But their struggles to complete
this supposedly quick job

are not yet over.

- This says number six.
- Are we on Dock Hill?

Mm-hm.

- Oh.
- Oh...

After a two-hour mission,

they find the right address
for the wallet's owner.

The AC's on,
so hopefully somebody is home.

Ah.

- Hi.
- How you doing, mate?

But he's not home.

Fortunately, someone at the property
gets him on the phone.

Hello, sir. It's PC Lavigne-Smith.

Hello. Erm, we've got your wallet
and we have to give it to you

into your hand, really. We can't
really give it to a third party.

With a time arranged for the owner
to collect it from the station,

it means the end
of a busy holiday shift

and a job well done
for Officers Robbie and Holly.

If I lost my purse, I would be
really panicked and upset,

especially if I had
that much money in it.

In that moment, you do
feel like you're making

a little bit of a difference
to someone's life.
